The Spider reprints became dammed up once we took on the DOMINO LADY project. But we have several issues "in the can" and ready to go to press in a few weeks.

Much as I hate to say it, The Spider was only on a regular schedule for a year, when I originally teamed with Cat Jaster ... they didn't come out more often when she was flying solo with the SPIDER ... I'm trying to remedy the problem, but it probably won't happen soon.  People don't subscribe since they aren't coming out more often, hence there isn't enough money to push them out the door faster.  Holy Catch-22, Batman!

And the movie company is out looking for a partner before it has a screenplay or a director. The Green Hornet will feature a sedan driven by the superhero's chauffeur and bodyguard, Kato, that will be so prominently featured the car will essentially be a star in the film, said Lori Sale, executive vice president of worldwide promotions for Miramax Films, a Walt Disney Co. unit.

The fact that Miramax doesn't have a director or a script is a plus, Ms. Sale said, because it gives a potential marketing partner major access in influencing how the cars are used in the film.  "It has to be a cool car," Ms. Sale said. "Minivans need not apply. It needs to be a new vehicle or a concept car." 

"It's not very often where the product is one of the cast," Ms. Sale said. "This is one of those films that don't come around too often. We want to make this the largest single automotive placement ever."

In order to participate in the Green Hornet film, an automaker does not have to pay Miramax directly, but it does have to agree to spend in excess of $35 million in paid media promoting its car in the movie, working with Miramax to create the campaign.

Solomon Kane will be scripted by David Jung and Steve Dandois. Variety claims "Solomon takes place in North America in the 1700s. ... Kane takes on deadly human forces as he seeks revenge against the sorcerer who destroyed his family."  "We want to make this a rip roaring, epic story," Hadida advised the trade paper. "Solomon Kane, an avenger who fights the forces of evil, fits in with this world."

Hadida and Wandering Star reportedly "have the capacity to raise the finance themselves, although distributors or an international sales agent could board the project at a later stage."

"Conan was a hero of the '80s and '90s," says Samuel Hadida. "Today there is a new dimension because of special effects. Solomon Kane, an avenger who fights the forces of evil, fits in with this world."  Wandering Star has interests in publishing and multi-media and holds the rights to Robert E Howard's catalog of 20s and 30s pulp fiction books including The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane. The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane will be re-released by Random House in a new paperback edition next spring.

The Variety article made no mention of Don Murphy (LXG) and Greg Hoffman (or original studio New Line Cinema) who were announced as the film's producers last fall.   For the reason why, IGN FilmForce spoke directly with Mr. Murphy who shared his opinions on the project.

"This is one of those classic stories that come up from time to time when you are a successful producer specializing in a certain area (Sci-Fi, Fantasy) and you agree to deal with wannabes," Murphy says.  "EVERY time I have ever agreed to deal with a wannabe outside Hollywood I have wasted enormous time and resources and sworn never again, only to have something incredible offered which makes me change my mind – and get burned again."

Murphy says he sparked to Kane after the project had been turned down by a number of studios. He brought it to New Line where he has a deal to produce Iron Man. "Deals were negotiated," Murphy explains. "Mine, the Berrows, the main producer Gregg Hoffman (artfully omitted from the press release) the rights – and then BLOWN up by the Berrows – over nothing. I was confused. New Line was confused. And then I had to converse again with the Berrows." Needless to say, all parties involved until then subsequently parted ways.

Murphy holds out little hope for the project as long as current producer Samuel Hadida is involved. Murphy refers to Hadida as "the guy who for ten years has said he was producing Ranxerox with Chris Cunningham directing. He didn't finance Wolf, Canal Plus did. I feel  for the poor writers who worked on this for a year without pay, but the expression is you lay down with dogs and ... they were begging to close their writing deal, which is a miserable offer from the Berrows. ... Announcements in the trades mean nothing – especially at a Film Festival when they are intended to float interest among buyers."  "Solomon Kane may still happen," Murphy adds, "once the Howard estate realizes they are missing the boat with the Berrows."

The filmmaker advised Onfilm that he no longer cares for "the flip, smart-arsed tone of our old script. We are better writers now than we were in 1996. This new version will be based on the 1933 movie, but not on our 1996 script. This movie will be so much better than the 1996 film would have been. In hindsight, fate has been kind to us."

Onfilm claims that Jackson told them "more of the film – about two thirds – will be set on Skull Island, as compared to previous versions."

It is impossible to ignore the sheer number of boxing stories that Robert E. Howard wrote. Tarzan and Jane is another attempt by the WB -- like Superman adaptation SMALLVILLE -- to turn an epic tale into a modern, younger-skewing drama. Levin sees TARZAN AND JANE skewing more heavily female than SMALLVILLE and believes it will benefit from the audience flow out of CHARMED.

Walter B. Gibson's life and career come out from behind The Shadow in this biography covering his youth in Philadelphia, his development as a writer and magician, his wives (including the third, Litzka, who was a harpist and magician in her own right), his time living in Maine and upstate New York, and his later years and death.

In addition to being crediting with creating The Shadow (he used the pseudonym Grant Maxwell--oops, I hope they didn't get this from the book!), Gibson wrote 187 books, contributed 668 articles to periodicals, created 282 stories for THE SHADOW MAGAZINE, wrote 48 separate syndicated feature columns, reported the adventures of The Shadow and Blackstone the Magician in 394 comic books and newspaper strips, and helped develop 147 radio scripts and many other works under numerous pseudonyms. Gibson invented many widely used magic tricks and traveled with and befriended Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston, Harry Blackstone, Sr., and Joseph Dunninger.

The book is written by Thomas J. Shimeld with a Foreword by Robert W. Gibson.
It is 7" X 10", 152 pages with photographs, appendices, references, an index, and illustrated case binding.

The Boats of the 'Glen Carrig' : The Collected Fiction of William Hope Hodgson Volume 1 is now actually at the printer.  Proofreading took the better part of four months, but it's all wrapped up now and the book is physically at the printer.  A ship date will be announced in a few days on the Night Shade Books website.  This is going to be an incredible book, and it's weighing in at 520 pages of Hodgson goodness.

The Collected Jorkens Volume 1 will be delayed until late Fall.  Charles Vess is backed up with a number of very cool projects, and he won't be able to get started for a while. 

The Midnight Sun: The Collected Kane stories of Karl Edward Wagner will be out in June/July.
