THE MOON POOL by A. Merritt
Wesleyan University Press will publish THE MOON POOL in July 2004.
One of the most gripping fantasies ever written, THE MOON POOL embodies all the romanticism and poetic nostalgia characteristic of A. Merritt’s writings. Set on the island of Ponape, full of ruins from ancient civilizations, the novel chronicles the adventures of a party of explorers who discover a previously unknown underground world full of strange peoples and super-scientific wonders. From the depths of this world, the party unwittingly unleashes the Dweller, a monstrous terror that threatens the islands of the South Pacific. Although Merritt did not invent the lost world novel, following in the footsteps of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Burroughs and others, he greatly elaborated upon that tradition. This new edition includes a biography of the author, and an introduction detailing Merritt’s many sources and influences, including the occult, mythological, and scientific discourses of his day.
352 pages, 8 illustrations, 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"
$24.95 Paper, 0-8195-6707-8
$65.00 Cloth, 0-8195-6706-X

Wildside Press - Harold Lamb collections coming soon!
In the works from Wildside Press are two Harold Lamb collections.
Howard Jones just put a collection together of Lamb's Crusader stories for which Bob Weinberg wrote the forward.

Howard is also putting together a run of ALL Lamb's Cossack stories. The Wildside Press collection will consist of six volumes that collects all of these related cycles plus another small cycle of Cossack adventures and the standalones from ADVENTURE and a few other mags--all the Lamb Cossack stories he has been able to find. Howard is working with the copyright holder and have permission to work with stuff from later periods, not just the material in public domain, so it should be a dream collection. Right now the only stumbling block is finding the time to scan the second half of volume 1 and first half of volume 2, because the rest of the volumes are nearly ready to go.  With luck the first two volumes will be prepped by year end, and the other volumes should follow much more swiftly.

Thanks to Howard Jones for contributing this information.

EVENTS - The website (http://www.windycitypulpconvention.com) has been newly updated, and please be sure to check it regularly for updates between now and show time. The dealer's room opens to the public at 2:00 pm on Friday afternoon (March 26), with the con suite opening at noon that day.   Our third annual Pulp Film Fest will kick off Friday evening, with some rare, pulp-related films being shown; also on Friday evening will be a panel on collecting original pulp and paperback art.  Films will also run periodically on Saturday afternoon and evening.  Those who attended last year's show were treated to a large display of original pulp and paperback art.  This year's attendees will have a similar treat in store; the art show will open Saturday morning and will draw from many of the top collections across the country – artists who will be represented include Walter Baumhofer, George Rozen, Virgil Finlay, Edd Cartier, Hannes Bok, Frank Kelly Freas, Harold DeLay, Paul Stahr, Michael Whelan, Ed Emshwiller, George Gross and many more.  Some will be for display only, while others will be for sale.  If you've got any art you'd care to bring along for display or sale, please contact us!

GUEST OF HONOR – Our Guest of Honor this year will be famedauthor, editor and agent Frederik Pohl, whose writing career is approaching 70 years.  In addition to a presentation Saturday evening, there will be an autographing session Saturday afternoon.  Or feel free to chat with this science fiction legend as he's wandering around the con!

AUCTION - There will also be an auction Saturday night. To encourage dealers and collectors to place items in the auction, no fee will be charged by the convention; all auction proceeds will go to the consignor. If you have material you'd like to submit to the auction, please contact John Gunnison at gunnison@adventurehouse.com

CON SUITE & OTHER DINING - Finally, as mentioned, there will be a con suite open on Friday and Saturday nights, so stop by for some free munchies and conversation about our favorite hobby!  The hotel features 2 restaurants as well as a sports bar and a martini/cigar bar and there are plenty of other dining choices are located nearby.  While it's unlikely to be in the 80's, springtime in Chicago has its fair share of sun.

AMAZING STORIES returns!
Paizo Pubishing launches AMAZING STORIES into the 21st Century!
The New AMAZING STORIES to Cover Fantastic Stories in All Media

The following is a press release from Paizo Pubishing:
First published in 1926, AMAZING STORIES has been a beloved source for fans of science fiction and remains a classic magazine with an oft-imitated logo.  Now re-imagined for a new generation of fans, AMAZING STORIES launches into the 21st century with both cutting-edge fiction from today's top authors and the mission to provide the definitive editorial voice across the entire spectrum of sci-fi and fantasy entertainment.

"As we bring AMAZING STORIES into the 21st century, we expand its boundaries," says Lisa Stevens, CEO, Paizo Publishing, LLC. "AMAZING STORIES was the first all-science-fiction magazine, but it is being given a facelift as it moves past its 75th birthday and into the bright future that the original issues could only speculate on."

AMAZING STORIES will feature reviews and previews of the latest movies, TV, DVDs, books, comics and story-driven electronic games, as well as interviews with the creators of these fantasy stories. Each issue will also contain original fiction works from the world's top authors, as readers of AMAZING STORIES have come to expect from the magazine.
Dave Gross, Editor-in-Chief of Star Wars Insider, will also helm AMAZING STORIES. Says Gross, "Eighty years ago, short stories like those in the original AMAZING STORIES were the principal source of science fiction and fantasy. In the 21st century, the genre audience extends way beyond prose readers, and AMAZING STORIES will connect with that audience by covering the cross-media gamut of sci-fi, fantasy, super heroes, and supernatural horror."
The first issue of AMAZING STORIES this century (84 pages monthly, $5.99  cover price) will hit newsstands July 2004. Monthly subscriptions are available at http://www.paizo.com, and for a limited time only, at a charter subscription rate of $34.95.

For editorial submissions, contact Dave Gross at Dave.Gross@paizo.com; for advertising contact Rob Stewart at Rob.Stewart@paizo.com. Media and marketing requests should go to Jenny Bendel at Jenny.Bendel@paizo.com.

Dennis Calero is illustrating a series of officially licensed Conan posters, 12 in all, tracing his progress from gladiator, to thief, to King!  Conan Properties International has been supportive of this project from day 1.  They believe that while Frazetta's and all previous iterations of Conan are fantastic and will always be there, that there is also room for a new artist to throw in his creative two cents, and more: they believed in the quality of Dennis Calero's work.

However, there is no need to wait! You can order the first poster in the series now!
The 12x18 SIGNED AND NUMBERED poster is listed on Ebay at a dutch auction; in other words, there's no bidding.  You just buy one if you want for $14.95 ($5.00 off the retail cost). You can pay by PayPal with your credit card.  Plus, if you buy 2 or more posters, YOU WILL RECEIVE THE SECOND POSTER IN THE SERIES, TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT, FOR FREE.  Click here to visit ebay and see a larger image of the first poster in the series!

Green Hornet
Kevin Smith told MTV that he’s met with his number 1 choice for “Green Hornet” and that the meeting went well. Rumors have linked both George Clooney — who was attached to the project in 1997 before he was cast in "The Peacemaker" — and Jet Li, but Smith wouldn't name names when pressed. He would only say that "acting skill" is at the top of his wish list. "I want a performer more than anything else — a guy who can act," Smith said.  The director plans to deliver a "Green Hornet" that's more serious in tone than his usual fare ("Clerks," "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"), and he expects the film's story to span several decades.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Gyllenhaal is Director Kevin Smith's first choice for "The Green Hornet" film. The trade says the two had a positive chat with the actor about the famed character and with the direction of the potential franchise, Smith is now interested in casting Gyllenhaal as the crime-fighting superhero who also doubles as Daily Sentinel publisher Britt Reid. Other names may still be in the mix, but Gyllenhaal appears to fit Smith's current conception of the character.

It's not the first time Gyllenhaal's name has been linked to a superhero character [of sorts]. When Tobey Maguire was playing hardball concerning his deal for "Spider-Man 2" rumours spread that the studio might be in talks to nab lookalike Gyllenhaal.

In a chat with About.Com, Kevin Smith revealed that he's got to create a villain for the film rather than relying on one of the old staple baddies of the serial - "Well, there's nothing really from the run of the comics that I read that I was real fond of. It's just something I've got to create, come up with for the purpose of the movie".

Hoohah!
A new issue of Hoohah! is now available online at http://www.hoohah.info.
This issue features a brief article on the Spicy pulps by Joe Lovece.
James Bond
According to MovieHole, Orlando Bloom is being considered for the role of 007 when Pierce Brosnan takes his tux to the cleaners. MovieHole also reports that the idea of using Mel Gibson for a 007 film is also still on the cards, even if Mel only wants to do one film.

A Bond source says, "They are pulling out all the stops to get him. Orlando would be perfect for the part as he's got the looks, the charm, the accent and the high profile that would make Bond even more popular. They want to move away from the traditional image of James Bond - the older, suave gentleman - and believe a younger, trendier actor will attract friends.  The actor's spokesman said, "No decision had been made about him taking the role."

Such checks are never in the possession of authors and Munsey Magazines/Popular Publications was one of the few publishers to retain such checks after they were endorsed and cashed. The only other time material like this was sold from the Munsey/Popular Publications files was in a series of auctions in 1982, at which time every item offered for sale or auction was sold at prices well above estimates.

Nemesis Magazine #3: Featuring Victory Rose in "The Fuhrer's Final Trumpet"
SPECIAL INTRODUCTORY OFFER - ONLY $1.99 - 50% OFF THE $3.99 RETAIL PRICE! ONE WOMAN WARRIOR AGAINST HITLER'S DEATH MACHINES! In December, 1941, the U.S. was forced into the boiling cauldron of World War II. Willing but still unready for the task at hand, the nation geared up for the greatest military conflict of all time. Within weeks, a new kind of soldier appeared on the scene - – Major Victoria Rose Hardwyck (a.k.a. Victory Rose). Her origins were labeled "Top Secret," and they remain classified in government files even to this day. When the first accounts of her heroic battles against Nazi tyranny leaked to an incredulous public, Victory Rose, Nemesis of Axis Tyranny, was thought to be a legend, her figure barely glimpsed in flashes of gunfire. Later, as the true accounts of her exploits were released as a morale builder, America found herself with a new ally and a powerful weapon in the war against the Axis. Later, when Nazi Germany tottered on the verge of collapse, Victory Rose and her unit were given her most challenging assignment: fly to Berlin and steal or destroy the newest and greatest of the German Wonder Weapons. In a last ditch effort to halt the Allied advance, Nazi scientists have created the War Trumpet, a device capable of knocking out electronic devices all along the battlefront and leaving the Allied Army at the mercy of a devastating counterattack. Trapped alone in the besieged German capital of Berlin, Victory Rose fights for her life against SS execution squads, faces the fury of a frenzied mob, and locks horns with Schickelgruber himself, Adolf Hitler, in his bunker deep beneath the city. To survive she must form an uneasy alliance with Russian commandoes led by her old flame, Alexei Kruszynski. But the game becomes more complicated when Victory Rose discovers that to accomplish her mission, she will not only have to recover the secrets of Nazi technology for the Allies, but keep it out of the hands of the Communists as well. For gripping World War II action, read "The Fuhrer’s Final Trumpet," a pivotal episode in the saga of Victory Rose! Plus: A trio of classic jungle tales from the heyday of the pulps: including full-length adventures of those legendary jungle men, Ki-Gor, Lord of the Jungle (in "Nirvana of the Seven Voodoos"!) and Kwa, King of the Apes. Illustrated with classic pulp art, except in Palm. Cover design: Stephen Adams.

A Million Years to Conquer: The 1940s SF Classic of Alien Intervention by Henry Kuttner
DID THE ALIEN PRODUCE SUPER-HUMAN INTELLIGENCE OR SUPER-HUMAN TREACHERY?
What do Stephen Court and Marion Barton of our time have in common with the treacherous barbarian conqueror, Thordred, or the vengeful Carthaginian warrior, Scipio, or Li Yang, the plump pleasure-loving Mongol Prince? They are all pawns in a million year plot to breed super-intelligence into the human race. One million years ago, Ardath, a male humanoid from a race possessing super-mentality survived a crash landing on Earth that killed all the other crewmembers, male and female. Sent on a mission by his doomed planet to find a habitable world, he refuses to abandon the. Seeing that this world supports primitive life, Ardath, determines to place himself in suspended animation and wait for evolution to produce intelligent humanoids on Earth. Then he will awaken and through a selective breeding program, to create a new race with super-mentality in the image of his own. All Ardath needs for his purpose is to wait for a mutant genus to be born. Then Ardath plans to take this man or woman and go on into time, until he finds a mental giant of the opposite sex. From their union will arise a race of mental giants who will be the off-spring and foster-children of his own race. It is a mission Adrath is sworn to complete – even if it takes a million years! What the alien Ardath leaves out of his calculations is that in human beings, along with super-intelligence come super-greed, treachery, and lust.  $4.00

The City at World's End: The Legendary SF Classic by Edmond Hamilton
"The City at World's End" is a classic from 1950 by the master of space opera, Edmond Hamilton, that finds the pleasant little American city of Middletown victim to the first punch of an atomic war, a super-hydrogen bomb which explodes thousand yards above the city. Instead of blowing Middletown to smithereens, the blast blows it right off the map – to somewhere else. First there is the new thin coldness of the air, the blazing corona and dullness of the sun, the visibility of the stars in high daylight. Then comes the inhabitant's terrifying discovery that Middletown is a twentieth-century oasis of paved streets and houses and shops and trees and gardens, in a desolate brown world without trees, without water, apparently without life, in unimaginably far-distant future Earth which lies abandoned and dying. To survive, the citizens o Middletown realize they will have to abandon their city, migrate to the alien city beyond the hills, and try to master the secrets of its long-abandoned, incredibly advanced machinery. But, the people of old Earth face their greatest crisis when they receive a communication from their own descendants, who have formed a Galactic Empire among the stars and long since evacuated Earth as uninhabitable or humans and have passed laws that it is to be preserved as a museum world and never repopulated again. If they are live in this future world, the men and women of Middletown will have to agree to leave Earth and migrate among the stars. The City at World's end is a human story of the reactions of men and women and boys and girl, people like you, suddenly thrust into an unprecedented situation. In its suspense, its intense humanity, its unexpected denouement, it is perhaps Mr. Edmond Hamilton's finest novel. $4.00

Topp's Wacky Packages return this May
The Topps Company has decided to bring back its classic Wacky Packages cards/stickers, which were originally launched in 1967 and enjoyed a remarkable run, which lasted until 1992 and encompassed some 18 unique series of cards.  The Wacky Packages parodied TV commercials and the over-hyped consumer products foisted on the American public by Madison Ave. and network television.  Cap'n Crunch cereal became Cap'n Crud in the world of Wacky Packages where Wheaties were Weakies ("Breakfast of Chumps").

Much of the original Wacky Packages art was completed by Norm Saunders the pulp artist.  The new series uses artwork by Norm's daughter Zina among other artists.  The series will consist of 55 stickers, a number of static clings and 10 temporary tattoos. There are 7 cards per pack, and 24 packs per box.  MSRP is $1.00 per pack.

Adventure House - Pulp Fictioneers is now available!
Now available from Adventure House is PULP FICTIONEERS, compiled and edited by John Locke.
PULP FICTIONEERS is a 6x9 softcover for $20.
This volume contains essays on the pulp industry by:
Thomas Thursday              Arthur J. Burks
Hugh B. Cave                    Hugo Gernsback
Wallace R. Bamber            Aron M. Mathieu
George C. Henderson         James W. Egan
Walter Gibson                    Henry Kuttner
Chuck Martin                     and more....editors...publishers
It will be illustrated and 240 pages in length.

Here is what Adventure House says about the book:
This collection is the result of combing through hundreds of issues of writing journals from the pulp era, mostly WRITER'S DIGEST and AUTHOR & JOURNALIST, but also a variety of lesser-known magazines: THE WRITER, THE EDITOR, WRITER'S REVIEW, and two magazines issued by correspondence schools, WRITERS' MARKETS AND METHODS and WRITER'S MONTHLY. One of the surprises of the project was in discovering how many magazines were devoted to the craft of writing at that time. This speaks, in some measure, to the opportunities presented by the pulps to the freelance writer. With hundreds of pulp magazines publishing thousands of stories, there may never have been a better time for making money selling fiction.

Many of the pulp-related articles in these journals deal with storytelling technique, usually genre-specific, e.g. "Action in Westerns," "Live Your Love Story," or "Why Aren't Your Detective Stories Selling?" Others assess the markets and advise on slanting for specific titles. But another category of article presents behind-the-scenes looks into the pulp world, the rise and fall of the business, the experiences of writers, editors, and publishers. And it is the most interesting and informative of this latter group that PULP FICTIONEERS attempts to gathers together.

CONAN #5
Kurt Busiek (Writer), Cary Nord (Penciller), Tom Yeates, and Dave Stewart (Colorist)
Joseph Michael Linsner (Cover). On sale June 23, Full Color, 32 pages, $2.99

Conan’s first Hyperborean adventure reveals the secrets of immortality, and the peaceful northern paradise is shown for the nightmare it really is. Conan breaks from those who’ve enslaved him, but is unable to save the lives of the prisoners he leads, or the woman he’s fallen in love with.  Robert E. Howard hinted at the terrors that his character Conan suffered in Hyperborea, but Busiek and company reveal the adventure here for the first time in livid detail.

ROBERT E. HOWARD’S VALERIA BUST
On sale June 23, 7" tall and comes packaged with a certificate of authenticity, $49.99
One of the most exciting Conan stories of all time is the classic Red Nails by Robert E. Howard. In this adventure we meet Valeria, a swordswoman and buccaneer who has cut a bloody swath from the coast to the jungle. Possessing a fatal beauty and a diamond-hard nerve, she joins Conan as an equal against a savage foe.

Sculptor Jeffery Scott, who did our previously released Conan busts, has breathed life into this stunning rendition of Valeria. This numbered, limited edition is the perfect companion piece. The piece comes fully painted in attractive color packaging. Valeria is a must-have for any collector of statues or Robert E. Howard material.

Both of the above items will be solicited in the April PREVIEWS available March 24th.

Dark Shadows
Barnabus Undead reports that actress Marley Shelton has been cast in the lead role of governess Victoria Winters. Because of delays with pilot shooting coming too close to "Elektra," director Rob Bowman has passed on the project. He is being replaced by PJ Hogan, who directed "Peter Pan" last year.

The March 12 issue of Entertainment Weekly revealed that The WB has also committed to six episode scripts beyond the pilot installment, leading several industry insiders to believe it's a shoe-in to make the WB's fall 2004 schedule.

 I, Robot
ComingSoon.net reported that the first full I, Robot trailer will be premiering in theaters with Secret Window on Friday. The former is a 20th Century Fox film while the latter is from Columbia Pictures, so most likely the trailer will be playing in select theaters and not attached to every print.

Will Smith stars in the action thriller, due out on July 16 and inspired by the classic short story collection by Isaac Asimov. It's brought to the big screen by dynamic and visionary director Alex Proyas (Dark City, The Crow). In the year 2035, robots are an everyday household item, and everyone trusts them, except one, slightly paranoid detective (Smith) investigating what he alone believes is a crime perpetrated by a robot. The case leads him to discover a far more frightening threat to the human race.

THE MEMOIRS OF HORATIO HUMBERTON by J. Paul Suter, introduction by Robert Weinberg
A total of ten adventure novelettes appeared in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE between July 1932 and January 1937 featuring the Necrologist Sleuth, Horatio Humberton. These stories feature elements of the supernatural, and the outrageous, and are collected here for the first time. Unfortunately only one featured a cover illustration for the magazine. You will not be disappointed with these hard-boiled escapades, bordering on humorous escapist detective fiction.  The ten stories are:  The Angel of the Damned, Eyes of the Dead, The Werewolf Horrors, The Mill of Horror, Seconds of Doom, Shoes for the Dead, Post Mortem, Dead and Buried, The Hairy Death, and The Corpse the Cat Dragged In.

Writing in THE DIME DETECTIVES (The Mysterious Press, 1988), Ron Goulart said: "Horatio Humberton...was a part-time dick and a full-time undertaker. 'Though Horatio Humberton earned the principal part of his living by the
direction of funerals," it was explained "another science, the study of crime, was much nearer his heart. When it came to embalming a murdered man, he could do a good job; but he would be far more enthusiastic in the task of
finding the murderer."  The retail price of this 386-page book will be $50. Scheduled to ship in late March.

THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF THE DEAN by Merle Constiner, introduction by Robert Weinberg
The Dean operates a fortune-telling business in a disreputable part of town. He is assisted in his adventures by Benton Matthews, a specialist in locks and guns. He also has the ear of Captain Kunkle, and grudgingly, the assistance of Lieutenant Malloy of the police department. Clients arrive with outrageous problems which generally lead to brilliant solutions. These nineteen unusual and unique stories will be published in THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF THE DEAN, by Merle Constiner and introduced by Robert Weinberg. They were originally published in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE from August 1940 through December 1945. A folio-sized hardcover, this "Lost Treasure from the Pulps" will retail for $75. Scheduled to ship in late March.

THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF BILL BRENT by Frederick C. Davis, introduction by Robert Weinberg
Bill Brent works for a newspaper, and as punishment he is assigned the "Lorna Lorne's Lost Lover's Advice Column" by his editor. However, inquiries for advise addressed to Lorna often result in misadventures, murder, and mayhem. The fifteen stories to be published in THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF BILL BRENT, by Frederick C. Davis, introduced by Robert Weinberg, were originally published in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE from May 1941 through June 1946. A folio-sized hardcover, this "Lost Treasure from the Pulps" will retail for $75. Scheduled to ship in late April/May.

Several new titles have been added to the LOST TREASURES FROM THE PULPS series for later in 2004.
Coming up are:  THE COMPLEAT MOON MAN by Frederick C. Davis - which will include all of the Moon Man stories ever published  and THE MAGICAL MYSTERIES OF DON DIAVOLO by Clayton Rawson - authorized by the Rawson estate, this volume will include the four very scarce Don Diavolo novels from the pulps as well as Rawson's five other pulp detective short stories.  Making it a true collector's item, BSDB hopes to have a new introduction for the book by Clayton Rawson's son.

Mike Chomko is now accepting pre-orders for all three of these volumes.
Orders over $30 are discounted 10% and shipped postpaid.

The Purple Cloud by M.P. Shiel - Coming in March/April!
THE PURPLE CLOUD, an acknowledged classic of early twentieth-century science fiction, explores this perennial scenario of imaginative writing in flamboyant, Decadent prose. After Adam Jeffson has become the first human ever to reach the North Pole, the world is poisoned by a mysterious purple cloud. Racked by horror and guilt, Jeffson, a latter-day Job, must find a way of living in a post-apocalyptic world piled high with the dead and their abandoned riches. And there is always the chance that somewhere, someone else has also survived.

Shiel's extraordinary inventiveness and admirably reckless style have won him many literary admirers. H.G. Wells called THE PURPLE CLOUD a 'Colossal . . . brilliant novel'. H.P. Lovecraft wrote that the passages in which Jeffson 'roams through the corpse-littered and treasure-strewn cities of the world as their absolute master, are delivered with a skill and artistry falling little short of absolute majesty. Stephen King has acknowledged the book as a major influence on his novel, THE STAND.

This new Tartarus edition reprints the original unrevised text of the 1901 first edition, and reproduces J.J. Cameron's twenty-four illustrations from the magazine serialisation of the same year. Brian Stableford provides a splendidly illuminating introductory essay, 'The Black-and-White Mystery of The Purple Cloud'.
This 286 page hardcover is limited to only 400 copies.
Publication is expected mid-March 2004.
You can pre-order this book now from Shocklines.

THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON by Steve Holland
In January 1954 twelve jurors sat at the Old Bailey to decide on the obscenity of seven crime novels written by the immensely popular Hank Janson whose sexy thrillers had sold five million copies in only six years. Hank’s publisher and distributor were found guilty and imprisoned and an arrest warrant put out for author.

THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON is a biography of Hank’s creator, Stephen D. Frances, and a history of the Home Office crackdown on ‘obscene’ paperbacks during the early 1950s during which period 350,000 books and magazines were destroyed by magistrates. As well as offering a revealing portrait of the author, TRIALS includes extensive quotes from the official transcript of the Old Bailey trial and a detailed look at how the Prosecution hoped to prove Frances was the author of the seven books found Guilty of obscenity when he came to trial in February 1955.

THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON also looks at the history of the character after the classic 'Gaywood' days, from Alexander Moring to Compact Books and beyond, and charts the decline of Frances’s fortunes. Having escaped from post-War London to live in Spain, the author now found himself cut off from the character he had created and faced a rapidly changing publishing industry that he needed to understand if he was to make a living.

TRIALS includes 16 pages of colour illustrations and a previously unseen cover by Reginald 'Heade' Webb.

THE TRIALS OF HANK JANSON is available from Telos Publishing (http://www.telos.co.uk), price £12.99.

WHEN DAMES GET TOUGH by Hank Janson

This collection also includes two Hank Janson stories from the pages of the British pulp magazine UNDERWORLD reprinted uncut for the first time. The collection is introduced by Steve Holland and has a previously unseen cover by Reginald 'Heade' Webb.

WHEN DAMES GET TOUGH is available from Telos Publishing (http://www.telos.co.uk), price £9.99.

Visit the Hank Johnson website at http://www.hankjanson.co.uk/  for more information on Hank Johnson, his works, and a look at the fabulous cover art on his books and many others.  This is one website that you do not want to miss!

Windy City Pulp & Paperback Convention - 2 weeks away!
The fourth Windy City Pulp & Paperback Convention is just two weeks away!  Last year, nearly 400 pulp and paperback fans gathered for the show, and browsed through 100 tables of pulp goodies.  Although the hotel has changed franchises since then from a Radisson to a Ramada, we're in the same great facility we were in last year.

THE HOTEL - Our hotel is convenient to the City of Chicago and O'Hare airport (an airport shuttle is available for $12 if you call the hotel), which makes it easy for folks flying in, as well as easy to travel in to Chicago if you want to engage in some tourist activities.  The hotel is also located in the midst of a major shopping area with dozens of restaurants, many within walking distance (a restaurant guide will be available in the registration materials given out at the con).  The hotel has set aside a block of rooms for the convention with a special room rate; please be sure to mention the convention when booking rooms.

DEALER TABLES - We will have approximately 100 dealer tables again.  Wall space is sold out, and only a handful of the island tables are still available.  The current dealer list is posted on the website, and includes many Pulpcon regulars as well as several dealers who don't usually do the summer con.  Full tables (6') are $55 each and half tables (3') are $35.  If you haven't reserved one yet, reserve one very soon.

ATTENDEES & PROGRAM BOOK - Attendees who pre-register by March 1, 2004 will receive their badges in the mail, avoiding the need to stand in line at the convention.  As in each of the past 3 years, there will be a souvenir booklet for the show, which will be given to each attendee.  This will be an approximately 64 page digest sized booklet containing a mix of genre articles and reprints, including a story by Frederik Pohl.

ADVERTISING - We are also accepting advertising for the booklet.  Rates are as follows: full page size ads (4 1/8" x 6.75") @ $ 60.00 half page size ads (4 1/8" x 3 3/8") @ $ 35.00 business card size ads (3.25" x 2") @ $ 20.00.  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is February 29, 2004. Please contact Tom Roberts at  tom.roberts2@verizon.net for all matters relating to the show booklet.

We look forward to seeing you at the fourth Windy City Pulp & Paperback Convention!

Firefly - It's Official!
It's now official!  According to Variety, The Firefly movie is definitely happening. Universal Pictures has greenlit “Serenity”, the feature film based on Joss Whedon's Fox TV series.  Deals are in place for Whedon to direct and for the original cast of the TV show to reprise their roles. The film, budgeted in the mid-eight figures, is scheduled for a June start and should be ready for a 2005 release. Whedon said the film will be released under the title “Serenity” to give it some distance from the TV version. He said he went out of his way while writing the project to make sure that it is accessible to audiences who never tuned into the series. The movie is set about six months after the TV show left off, and centers on two passengers on board the ship who attract trouble to the crew.

James Bond 21
Variety chatted with one of the many superstars at the Oscars Night Before party, Pierce Brosnan, who noted he'd completed four films in a row. As for whether he'll be back for another outing as James Bond, Brosnan said that commitment was "opaque." It appears the rumors from a few weeks ago, that said his participation in James Bond 21 was iffy, weren't that far off after all.
Logan's Run
According to the Moviehole website, Bryan Singer, the man behind two of the best comic to film adaptations ever in X-Men and its sequel, is set to direct a remake of science fiction classic Logan's Run. The project is set up at Warner Bros. with Joel Silver [House of Wax] producing. The sci-fi action film about a man trying to escape a mandatory death sentence on his 21st birthday is being fast-tracked to start production this year. Singer will do Logan's Run before going back to the X-Men franchise.

Ethan Gross and Paul Todisco, with Singer, are writing the script, and the studio plans to release the film in 2005. No stars have been cast as of yet.

Prince Valiant
According to Gemstone Publishing, John Cullen Murphy recently retired as primary artist on Prince Valiant. Murphy had succeeded Prince Valiant creator, Hal Foster. Beginning March 21, award-winning artist Gary Gianni will take over illustrating the strip, with Murphy's son Cullen continuing as writer.
A Princess of Mars - A feature film is finally on the way!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Rodriguez ("Spy Kids" series) is set to direct Edgar Rice Burroughs' science fiction classic A Princess of Mars for Paramount Pictures.  Plans are to use Texas soundstages to get the look and feel of the Martian landscapes of Barsoom. Rodriguez is a big Frank Frazetta fan, which will hopefully mean good things for the production.  The film may be called John Carter of Mars – so if Rodriguez feels like doing another trilogy, he has the material for it. The studio is certainly hoping that this will prove the first in a franchise. The budget is apparently set at something over $100 million and the studio seems anxious to challenge Peter Jackson on his own ground and put this firmly in the box marked "epic".

Mark Protosevich wrote the latest draft of the script, which reportedly brings Burroughs original up to modern standards. Protosevich has a good track record.  According to Ain't it Cool News, Protosevich's script for Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND is one of the most highly-regarded unfilmed scripts in recent Hollywood memory.  It's epic and personal at the same time, and it does a hell of a job of turning a familiar piece of material into something fresh.

Rodriguez will first adapt and direct Sin City, based on the graphic novels by Frank Miller, for Dimension Films.

Tarzan and His Mate
Just before Christmas, the Associated Press released an article on the National Film Registry's choice of movies to be preserved by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant motion pictures. In 1988, Congress established the Film Preservation Act, and each year 25 films are added to the registry which currently includes a total of 375 films. In 2003, Tarzan and his Mate (1934) was added to the registry.
