HELL ISLAND by Matthew Reilly - Available March 3rd!
This revised edition of the short novel originally published in Australia is specially adapted for readers of all ages with reading difficulties. There is no hell like a man-made one...It is an island that doesn't appear on any maps. A secret location where classified experiments have been conducted. Experiments that have gone terribly wrong...When all contact with this mystery island is inexplicably lost, four crack special-forces units are brought in, their mission being to land on Hell Island and discover what has happened. Nothing can prepare them for what they find there. You could say they've just entered hell. Only that would be too gentle. Pan, 128 pages, £2.99, available from Amazon.co.uk.

From Matthew Reilly's website:
The UK edition of HELL ISLAND is a special version of the novella (called “Quick Reads”). This means the entire books was rewritten by educators so that it would be accessible to readers of very low literacy levels. This is a wonderful program and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. It might even entail a visit by me to London in March for the launch. But it means the book has been greatly simplified.

So, UK readers, please don't buy the book and email me and say, “It was kinda basic…” This is very deliberate. The book is for those people who don't read very much, and indeed, might be intimidated by the density of novels generally.

If you want the full-blown edition of Hell Island , go to Ebay and grab one of the Australian “Books Alive” editions or, even, wait until the end of this year when we might release a collection of my short stories!

It's funny, when I started writing, I never expected to write short stories. But then invitations came, and from various sources: in 2000, The Sydney Morning Herald asked me to do a four-part serial. The Bulletin magazine in Australia has asked me to contribute to their “Summer Fiction” issue several times. I was even invited to contribute to Girls' Night In 2: Gentlemen by Invitation . And of course, there is
HELL ISLAND .

And since all of these shorts were only published in Australia (especially
HELL ISLAND ), my international fans missed out on reading them.  So, as the years have gone by, this little collection has grown. And so, late last year, I discussed with Cate Paterson at Pan Macmillan the possibility of releasing my short stories in a collection in late 2006 (since my next novel won't be released till 2007, it'd be nice to give readers something this year). We're still working out the details, so more news on this as it happens, but I am thinking of doing a couple of new short stories, one featuring Aloysius Knight from Scarecrow , just to spice it up!

Jurassic Park IV Script Ready
The fourth installment in the Jurassic Park franchise could be coming to the big screen sooner than we thought.
Frank Marshall says they have a "good script," and the idea is to start shooting the film next year (2007) and get it into theaters in 2008.

Masters of Science Fiction - Coming to TV screens!
ABC Television has picked up IDT Entertainment’s drama series “Masters of Science Fiction,” featuring works from some of the most well known authors of science fiction, the network announced today. Negotiations are underway to include works from Isaac Asimov (author of “I Robot” and “Nightfall”), Ray Bradbury (“The Martian Chronicles,” “Fahrenheit 451”), Harlan Ellison (“A Boy and His Dog,” “Jeffty is Five”) and Robert Heinlein (“The Puppet Masters,” “Stranger in a Strange Land”). IDT Entertainment, in association with Industry Entertainment, will produce a minimum of four one-hour episodes.

"We're very excited about this anthology," says Quinn Taylor, who oversees movies and miniseries for ABC. "We've been trying to put together this kind of series because it has great potential to become appointment television."

Oscar-nominated screenwriter Michael Tolkin ("The Player," "Deep Impact") has already agreed to write and direct one episode. Bradbury is in discussions to adapt his "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed," and the producers are also negotiating for the rights to Asimov's story "The Last Question" and "The Discarded" by Harlan Ellison.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
The new poster for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest plus other images have been posted online.  The theatrical one-sheet features the film's three heroes prominently with Orlando Bloom's Will Turner in the top-most position, flanked by Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow and the lovely Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swan. The artwork depicts a maritime battle, a giant octopus attacking a pirate ship, some scary-looking natives and what may be titular treasure chest in the lower-right corner.

Ernest Chiriacka and William Tenn to be Guests of Honor
William Tenn was a major figure in science fiction magazines after his first SF story "Alexander the Bait" appeared in the May, 1946 Astounding until he became a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University in 1966. His satirical and ironic stories from the period which have been anthologized dozens of times were collected into two super volumes by NESFA in 2001. They have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Earlier sports, detective and western magazines sometimes had them as written by Kenneth Putnam. Tenn was an editor at Popular Publications and edited one anthology, "Children of Wonder" in 1953. He is now Professor Emeritus at Penn State and, at 87, a rabid football fan.

Ernest Chiriacka, who attended Pulpcon last year, had outstanding covers on pulps in several fields. Two of his paintings appeared in an advertisement in the December 2004 issue of Illustration, supporting that magazine and the entire community of illustration fans making it a success. A later issue had a lengthy article about him which featured quite a few of his striking action cover paintings. Hal Steeger of Popular Publications rated him "one of the very best in quality and to work with". Since enjoying Pulpcon 34, Chiriacki has been guest of honor at the Windy City convention and Rich Harvey's shorter and smaller gathering in New Jersey.

William Murray Graydon African stories needed for reprint project
Georges Dodds is
currently editing (for Battered Silicon Dispatch Box) an anthology of thematic precursors to "Tarzan of the Apes" and putative research material Edgar Rice Burroughs might have used in doing preparatory research for "Tarzan of the Apes"; it is tentatively entitled "The Incunabular Ape-Man Writings".  In doing so I have and will be digitizing the text of a number of works (>30 novels and works of non-fiction + 15-20 short stories), some from pulps and dime novels, in English, French, Spanish and German (the latter three translated to English). A complete list of the anthology's contents (as it currently stands in its evolution) is available upon request.

There are some works in early pulps I have not been able to acquire copies of, and at this point the library at the university where I work is getting a bit doubtful that pre=WW1 pulp magazines have much to do with the field of agricultural engineering. A friend of mine who works at the LOC has tried unsuccessfully to get copies of some texts for me (shoddy equipment maintenance prevent him, on several occasions, from copying more that a couple of pages).  The Univ. of Minnesota, for whom I've digitized a few dime novels (see above)are supposed to have original copies of "The Argosy" -- but can't find them (doh!). One collector I know has some but hasn't the time to make me copies.

So here goes my current request list.  I would cover any costs of photocopying or scanning the material.  I've included some other works, some in French, some not published in pulp magazines or dime novels, but rather in book form, in the hope that one of you might have a copy.

A couple of Graydon stories appeared in "The Argosy" in 1895-1897.
Graydon, William Murray. "Over Africa" In: The Argosy (8-part serial) June 1895-Jan 1896
Graydon, William Murray. "The River of Darkness" In: The Argosy (7-part serial) May-November 1897

Other stories needed are:
Epes, Winthrop Sargent. 1909. "Beyond the Banyans."  All Story Magazine, October 1909
Lemon, Don Mark.  1905.  "The Gorilla"  All-Story Magazine  October 1905
*At least one of these was reprinted as a novel, though I'd rather have the original "Argosy" text, since many of the novel editions were severely cut.
Anonymous (as by His Royal Highness Mammoth Martinet). 1871. "The Gorilla Origin of Man: or, the Darwin Theory of
Development Confirmed from Recent Travels in the New World called Myn-me-ae-nia, or Gossipland"
Obtainable from the British Library for approximately $200, can anybody quote me a better price?

Contact Georges at
georges.dodds@mcgill.ca
if you can help with copies of the above novels.

THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL - Coming May 23, 2006!
Paul Malmont's upcoming novel THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL  is "a modern take on the pulp novel, concerning the rivalry and friendship between the leading pulp writers of the thirties: Walter Gibson, creator of The Shadow, and Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage".

Set in 1937, when America has turned to the pulps for relief from the Depression, it is at once a valentine to an old-fashioned genre as well as a modern meta-literary examination of the classic hero pulp.  The death of H.P. Lovecraft propels the pulp era's greatest writers and rivals Walter (The Shadow) Gibson and Lester (Doc Savage) Dent into a real-life adventure even greater than the ones they imagine.  Among the characters appearing in the book are L. Ron Hubbard, Robert Heinlein, Orson Welles, and (probably of particular interest to you as a Western writer!) a young sea-faring cowboy by the name of Lew Moore.  THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL is a swash-buckling romantic tale of writers and writing, magic and love, marriage and fatherhood, ambition and loss that weaves the true lives of its real-life characters into a fictional epic.

A sneak peek of the novel is now online on the Chinatown Death Cloud Peril website.
The website should whet your appetites and give you an indication of what is to come.

DARKER TIDES by  Eric Frank Russell - Now available for pre-order!
The name of Eric Frank Russell is synonymous with the "Golden Age of Science Fiction". From his first published tale in 1937 to the middle of the 1960s, Eric Frank Russell was one of the most highly-acclaimed authors in the genre. As such, much of his best science fiction remains in print today. However, there was another side to the great writer, that of being one of the modern masters of the weird tale. As an admirer of the work of Charles Fort, Eric Frank Russell was also keenly interested in the supernatural or unexplainable. His novel SINISTER BARRIER was credited with inspiring John W. Campbell to launch UNKNOWN so that stories of this type would have a home. Over the next two decades, Eric Frank Russell wrote more stories that are more in the realm of the "weird tale" than the more logical world of science fiction. Several of these tales were collected over thirty years ago in a fabulously rare volume entitled DARK TIDES. This new collection contains all of these elusive tales and doubles their number with a selection of similar stories from sources such as WEIRD TALES, FANTASTIC, STRANGE STORIES, and SCIENCE FANTASY. Whether you come to this book as an Eric Frank Russell fan seeking out his rare stories or come as a devotee of the weird tale, we are certain that you'll find much here to enjoy!

With introductions by the late author and a new preface by John Pelan and a striking cover by Allen Koszowski this edition is limited to just 500 copies.

Considering that Mr. Russell's collection from NESFA is now in a third printing, we strongly suggest advance orders to avoid possible disappointment. $45.00 the copy with $7.00 S & H in the USA, $14.00 S & H elsewhere.

MOONSTONE BOOKS ANNOUNCES PHANTOM ANNUAL #1
PHANTOM: FIVE DAYS OF THE DRAGON!

Five Writers and Five Artists Bring Together Five Tales of the Phantom

With the 70th Anniversary of the Phantom upon us today, Moonstone Books has pulled out all the stops in bringing several major Phantom projects to life. With Phantom: Legacy, Phantom: Law of the Jungle and Phantom: The Man-Eaters on the way, as well as the announcement of new regular Phantom series creative team Mike Bullock and Gabriel Rearte taking over on issue twelve, the Moonstone mavens felt the need for a fifth event to round out the anniversary celebration.

Enter Ron (Ion, Cyberforce) Marz, Chuck (Batman, Transformers) Dixon, Tony (Exiles, Negation) Bedard, Rafael (Vampire the Masquerade, Phantom) Nieves and Mike (Lions, Tigers and Bears, Phantom) Bullock.  Once the five writers came together, they quickly constructed a story worthy of the Phantom's anniversary. It wasn't long before they enlisted the help of five great artists to bring this story to life.  Disney animator and sculptor Ruben Procopio, Graham (Phantom Sunday strip) Nolan, Joe (Rann-Thanagar War) Prado, Tony (Fables) Akins and Juan (Small Gods) Ferreyra all answered the call.

A Phantom tale like no other, told by ten top talents, and only a giant-size Annual could hold it! "Five Days of the Dragon" spans five centuries, as five different generations of The Phantom battle the dreaded pirates of the Singh Brotherhood to control a powerful artifact from feudal China. But even if the Ghost Who Walks defeats his cutthroat enemies, can he hope to withstand the ancient, mystic power that will be unleashed?

All this, plus a superstar pin-up gallery! If you've never read an issue of The Phantom, this is the place to start!
Look for it in stores this summer, only from Moonstone.

The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box - John Russell Fearn Library
LAND'S END-LABRADOR is part of the "John Russell Fearn Library." Edited by Philip Harbottle and 150 pages long, it is now available in hardcover for $28 or softcover for $16. I have no further details about this story.

THE STAR WEEKLY THRILLERS OF JOHN RUSSELL FEARN, VOL. ONE is also part of BSDB's Fearn series. Edited by Philip Harbottle and 450 pages long, it is now available as a folio-sized hardcover for $80. I'd have to guess that these are the stories other than the Golden Amazon adventures that Fearn contributed to THE TORONTO STAR WEEKLY.

THE SCIENTIFIC DETECTIVE STORIES OF JOHN RUSSELL FEARN, VOL. ONE is also part of BSDB's Fearn series. Edited by Philip Harbottle and 450 pages long, it is now available as a folio-sized hardcover for $80. I'm guessing that this book includes Fearn's scientific detective. Dr. Carruthers, many of whose adventures blur into science fiction, notably 1951's WHAT HAPPENED TO HAMMOND?

Bison Books - Harold Lamb titles and TARZAN ALIVE coming soon!
The first two volumes in Harold Lamb's
Khlit the Cossack
series arrive in July.
WOLF OF THE STEPPES-THE COMPLETE COSSACK ADVENTURES, Volume 1, 660 pages
WARRIORS OF THE STEPPES-THE COMPLETE COSSACK ADVENTURES, Volume 2, 703 pages
Each will cost $19.95.

Master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, the wolf of the steppe, Khlit the Cossack. Journey now with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes. Match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults. Rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains and skill and a little luck. In this first volume, Khlit infiltrates a hidden fortress of assassins, tracks down the tomb of Genghis Khan, flees the vengeance of a dead emperor, leads the Mongol horde against impossible odds, accompanies the stunning Mogul queen safely through the land of her enemies, and much more. This is the stuff of grand adventure, from the pen of an American Dumas. The four-volume set collects, for the first time, the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb and presents them in order: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never before appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features never-before reprinted essays Lamb wrote about his stories, informative introductions by popular authors, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction.

TARZAN ALIVE-A DEFINITIVE BIOGRAPHY OF LORD GREYSTOKE by Philip José
Farmer, featuring a new foreword by Win Scott Eckert and an introduction by Mike Resnick, is slated for release as a trade paperback in April 2006. It will cost $19.95.

Through the tales of Edgar Rice Burroughs, generations of readers have thrilled to the adventures of Lord Greystoke (aka John Clayton, but better known as Tarzan of the Apes). In this biography Philip José Farmer pieces together the life of this fantastic man, correcting Burroughs's errors and deliberate deceptions and tracing Tarzan's family tree back to other extraordinary figures, including Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes, the Scarlet Pimpernel, Doc Savage, Nero Wolfe, and Bulldog Drummond. TARZAN ALIVE offers the first chronological account of Tarzan's life, narrated in careful detail garnered from Burroughs's stories and other sources. From the ill-fated voyage that led to Greystoke's birth on the isolated African coast to his final adventures as a group captain in the RAF during World War II, Farmer constructs a comprehensive and authoritative account. Farmer's assertion that Tarzan was a real person has led him to craft a biography as well researched and compelling as that of any character from conventional history. This definitive Bison Books edition also includes Farmer's "Exclusive Interview with Lord Greystoke" as well as "Extracts from the Memoirs of 'Lord Greystoke'" first anthologized in MOTHER WAS A LOVELY BEAST.

LEXINGTON BOOKS  - Now available!
PARTNERS IN WONDER: WOMEN AND THE BIRTH OF SCIENCE FICTION, 1926-1965, by Eric Leif Davin
This book revolutionizes our knowledge of women and early science fiction. Contrary to accepted interpretations, women fans and writers were a welcome and influential part of pulp science fiction from the birth of the genre. Davin finds that at least 203 female authors, under their own female names, published over a thousand stories in science fiction magazines between 1926 and 1965. This work explores the distinctly different form of science fiction that females produced-one that was both more utopian and more empathetic than that of their male counterparts.

PARTNERS IN WONDER presents, for the first time, a complete bibliography of every story published by women writers in science fiction magazines from 1926 to 1965 and brief biographies on 133 of these women writers. It is thus the most comprehensive source of information on early women science fiction writers yet available and of great importance to scholars of women's studies, popular culture, and English literature as well as science fiction.
446 pages long, it is available in hardcover for $110 or softcover for $40.

MYTHOS BOOKS   - Now available!
THE TALES OF INSPECTOR LEGRASSE, by C. J. Henderson-spawned from the classical horror-hunt of Inspector Legrasse in H.P. Lovecraft's seminal tale "The Call of Cthulhu," now his further adventures have been taken directly from the original notes of Professor William Channing Webb of the American Archaeological Association and written up for your edification by author C.J. Henderson, the dedicated chronicler who has exhaustively reported the occult adventures of Anton Zarnak, Jack Hagee and Teddy London, amongst others. These seven tales detail the epic confrontation of an unsuspecting mankind with the unimaginable horrors of the Cthulhu Mythos. After a wait of over half a century, from the combined hands of H.P. Lovecraft and C.J. Henderson, finally comes the answers to all the maddening riddles of the legendary first tale of the Mythos.

Paradox Entertainment has acquired all rights to the library of Robert E. Howard
According to a report in Variety, Swedish based Paradox Entertainment, which already owns the literary rights to Robert E. Howard’s Conan, has purchased the remainder of the rights to the REH library from the late writer’s estate, amounting to 800 or more properties. As the report relates, Paradox now controls Kull, Bran Mak Morn, Solomon Kane and Red Sonya, and, again, according to Variety “hopes to license its new literary properties for film, TV, videogames, comics, toys and other areas.”

The press release from Paradox reads:

Paradox Entertainment announced today that the company has acquired all rights to the library of author Robert E. Howard, the creator of Conan and over 800 other literary pieces. Paradox Entertainment has owned Howard’s Conan since 2002 and the new addition of the entire library gathers all of Howard’s writings under one company. “We have been negotiating this transaction for a year and we are confident of its tremendous value. I don’t think it’s possible to overestimate the magnitude of this purchase,” said Peter Sederowsky, Chairman of the Board at Paradox Entertainment AB.

“Robert E. Howard is undoubtedly one of the greatest fantasy authors of the 20th century, with an enormous list of works. It is mind-boggling that only four movies have been made based on his writings. Through this purchase we are securing an extensive production slate through long-term partnership in all areas of entertainment and media. We are already considering many projects and are excited for the future,” said Fredrik Malmberg, Head of Licensing & Creative Affairs at Paradox Entertainment Inc. in Los Angeles.

Robert E. Howard was one of the greatest authors of his time and is considered the creator of the genre ”Sword & Sorcery”, perhaps most known through the character Conan. Despite his short literary career – Howard died at the mere age of 30, after only 12 years as a productive author – he wrote over 800 stories and poems. Howard’s breakthrough came when being published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales during the 1930s. His stories take us to such different surroundings as ancient Atlantis, the North African desert during WW1, hidden opium dens in dark alleys of the Big City, and northern Britain during the invasion of the Roman Legions.

Over the years, many authors have been inspired by Howard’s stories, and have praised his literary legacy, among them H. P. Lovecraft, Michael Moorcock, and Stephen King, who said about Howard: ”In his best work, Howard’s writing seems so highly charged with energy that it nearly gives off sparks. Stories such as ‘People of the Black Circle’ glow with the fierce and eldritch light of his frenzied intensity.”

As for how this impacts the Howard properties most relevant to comic fans, namely, Dark Horse’s Conan and Dynamite Entertainment’s Red Sonja series, the short version is, it doesn’t.

While this deal will simplify things, the world of REH licensed properties is still slightly complicated, with all of the creator’s characters not sharing one “universe” that can be owned or licensed.

In regards to Conan, Dark Horse licenses the character from Conan Properties International, a wholly owned subsidiary of Paradox. CPI controls not only Conan, but all associated characters from the Hyborian world.

Except Red Sonja.

As explained previously, Red Sonja is controlled by the Red Sonja Corporation, a wholly separate company, distinct from the REH Estate, Paradox, and CPI. Reportedly (and to make just a fewmore lines cross), Red Sonja Corp currently has the rights to the Thulsa Doom character (originally a Conan nemesis), which it has, in turn, licensed to Dynamite for use in Red Sonja comics.

The ownership lines became fuzzy between 2000-2003, during which time Stan Lee Media bought the rights to Conan (late 2000) when it purchased CPI, promising to make, among other things, a film at Warner Bros., and “webisodes” of the barbarian’s adventures. Stan Lee Media of course, went under in a storm of controversy and alleged wrongdoing in December of 2000. In 2002, Paradox bought into the Conan property, but by that point, the Howard Estate had spun off the Red Sonja rights into their own company, the Red Sonja Corporation. The REH Estate kept the rights to all the other Howard properties.

As noted above though, Paradox does on the rights to Red Sonya, while the Red Sonja Corporation retains the rights to Red Sonja. The difference of course, being in the spelling of the last name. “Red Sonya,” which Paradox now owns, is the original Howard version, a female pirate who was not a contemporary of Conan. “Red Sonja” is the character derived from Howard’s works by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith in 1973. “Sonja” is the character who previously appeared in Marvel’s Conan comics and her own miniseries, while “Sonya” is known perhaps best to Howard aficionados.

The move by Paradox, with their stated aim of seeking to further exploit the characters in, among other media, comics, is notable, as it can be assumed that the process to developing more REH properties for comics may be a little more streamlined. Before their launches, both Conan and Sonja were on the rubbish heap of comics, their viability questionable at best. But as both Dark Horse and Dynamite have shown with their respective series (Red Sonja currently outsells Conan in months that Sonja ships), there is still a demand for Howard’s characters in the market, when treated with care and respect by both publishers and creators.

William Murray Graydon African stories needed for reprint project
Georges Dodds is  working on a project to reprint a number of African stories by William Murray Graydon (The White King of Africa, Across the Equator, Sexton Blake in the Congo, etc..).

A couple of Graydon stories appeared in "The Argosy" in 1895-1897.
Graydon, William Murray. "Over Africa" In: The Argosy (8-part serial) June 1895-Jan 1896.
Graydon, William Murray. "The River of Darkness" In: The Argosy (7-part serial) May-November 1897.

At least one of these was reprinted as a novel, though the original "Argosy" text is preferred since many of the novel editions were severely cut.
Contact Georges at georges.dodds@gmail.com if you can help with copies of the above novels.

2006 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006
The Windy City website has been updated to add initial info on next year's show.

IMPORTANT NOTE – In mid-June, the hotel we’d used in April 2005 and had booked for April 2006, the Ramada Plaza O’Hare, informed us they’d been sold and were demolishing their convention facilities in late 2005.  We were fortunate enough to reach a deal with the Wyndham O’Hare (in many respects a nicer hotel) – which is right next to the Ramada – to take the con in 2006, but the only weekend they could accommodate us for 2006 was May 5-7.  So, both the hotel and dates have changed if you pre-registered at the past Windy City Pulp & PB Con!

This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, and in connecion with that anniversary, we're planning a number of special Shadow displays and events.  Please check the website for details as they're available.

Click here to download the pre-registration form.

AUCTION:  The auction will kick off Saturday at 8 pm.  If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com.

ART SHOW:  We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the second year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustration-magazine.com).  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us.  The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons.

PULP FILM FEST:  Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film.  There will be one session Friday (beginning at 8 pm) and one session Saturday (following the auction).  More info will be posted on the website closer to the con.  The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (http://www.geocities.com/poppub/).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $60 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $35 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $20 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2006.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad matters (other than payment).

HOTEL INFO:  The Wyndham is only minutes from O’Hare airport (the hotel operates a free shuttle service which runs approximately every 20 minutes – and from the east, you can now circle around the city, rather than go through; from other directions, you don’t have to go through the city).  The room rates at the new Hotel are $92/night plus tax (which is the same as the rate at our old hotel).  One car per room parks free of charge; otherwise there’s a parking charge of $6.00 (no in and out privileges).

Captain Hazzard - PYTHON MEN OF THE LOST CITY: All chapters are now available!
Ron Fortier has revived the pulp hero CAPTAIN HAZZARD and is bringing him back for the fans to enjoy. He has completely rewritten the one and only CAPTAIN HAZZARD pulp story, PYTHON MEN OF LOST CITY.  All fifteen chapters of the story are now available online at the Modern Pulp website with illustrations by Rob Davis.  They will soon be collected into a trade paperback available from Wild Cat Books.

Then what will follow is a brand new series of Captain Hazzard adventures by Ron and veteran comic-scribe, Martin Powell. At the same time, Chris Mills and Ron have a three part comic mini-series based on PYTHON MEN in the works.
Craig Shepard is the penciller for the project and he is embellished by inker Sean Tenoff.  Both are newcomers to the field and have tremendous potential.   Shepard's pencils are delicate in the tradition of Tom Yeates and Gene Colan, whereas Tenoff's inks are smooth and true to those pencils.  Rounding the team will be Digital Caps own Jaymes as our letterer and Bishop Bowie of Graphic Balance as our colorist.   Chris Mills will also take on editing and design duties.

The idea is to bring back the character two-fold, both in pulps where he was sired, and in comics, in all new stories.
A Captain Hazzard cover mockup is shown at the right.

THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL - Coming in June 2006!
Last year, The Alien Online reported
about Paul Malmont's
upcoming novel THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL which is "a modern take on the pulp novel, concerning the rivalry and friendship between the leading pulp writers of the thirties: Walter Gibson, creator of The Shadow, and Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage". Simon & Schuster (US) bought the rights to the novel at auction.

I reported the information in COMING ATTRACTIONS and GOLDEN PERILS #38.  Paul Malmont learned of the write up in GOLDEN PERILS #38 and sent additional information about the book to GOLDEN PERILS publisher Howard Hopkins who has forwarded it on to me.  THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL is scheduled for publication in June 2006.

THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL

Thanks to Paul Malmont for the above information and to Howard Hopkins for sending it to me.

This entry is an essay on Frederick Faust's use of landscape in a short story, "The One-Way Trail," originally published in the February 4, 1922 issue of Street & Smith's WESTERN STORY MAGAZINE. In many cases, Faust (a.k.a. Max Brand) uses landscape as a character -- it provides an obstacle for a protagonist to overcome, much as a dragon or a chapel perilous might serve as a test for a hero on a quest. In other cases, the landscape serves an expressionistic role that highlights or reveals something about a character's qualities or psychological makeup, much in the way the expressionistic film directors of the 1920s, `30s and `40s used scenery and sets to create an atmosphere of menace and visually portray a character's psychological state.
