2007 Windy City Pulp and Paper Con - May 4 thru 6, 2007!
CELEBRATING WEIRD TALES AND THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY OF CONAN!
This year marks the 75th anniversary of Robert E. Howard’s immortal pulp character, Conan of Cimmeria, and in connection with that anniversary, we’re planning a number of special displays and events centered on Conan and the pulp magazine in which he first appeared, WEIRD TALES. Please check the website for details as they’re available.

GUESTS OF HONOR: KEN KELLY & GARY GIANNI
In keeping with our Conan theme, artists Ken Kelly and Gary Gianni will be our Guests of Honor this year.
Among the many paperback and magazine covers Ken Kelly has painted are numerous portrayals of Conan,
beginning with the Berkley paperbacks of the 1970's, while Gary Gianni has brought Conan to life in the recent
Wandering Star volumes. Both have depicted numerous other REH heroes as well.

ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art. For the third year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustrationmagazine. com). If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us. The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons.

PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. We will also be showing episodes of the classic TV series, Thriller, based on stories that had originally appeared in WEIRD TALES. More info will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (www.geocities.com/poppub/).

PROGRAM BOOK: All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints. To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8'' x 6.75''), half page $40 (4 1/8'' x 3 3/8''), business card size $25 (3.25” x 2''). The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2007. Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad matters (other than payment).

CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby.

HOTEL: For our seventh show, we’ll be in the NW suburbs of Chicago. The Sheraton is 15-20 minutes NW of O’Hare Airport. Room rates are $97/night; parking is free. For those bringing families, the Sheraton’s indoor waterpark is opening this fall, and the Sheraton is also located two miles from Woodfield Mall, which is the Chicago area’s largest mall. The hotel is 1/2 mile from the Chicago Metra train line, which runs to downtown Chicago. The hotel is also located next to Arlington Park Racecourse, the premier horse racing venue in Illinois. The con coincides with opening weekend, and on the Saturday, in addition to the regular slate of races they’ll be simulcasting the Kentucky Derby. So if you still have any money left after buying stuff at the con, you can put a few dollars down on the Derby. The hotel has complimentary transportation to and from Woodfield Mall, the train station and the track.

MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $15 for Sunday only. At the request of several attendees at past cons, we are, for the first time, experimenting with and offering the option of buying an Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public). Raoul Whitfield
Dennis McMillan has recently published Walter Satterthwait's DEAD HORSE, which is about pulp writer Raoul Whitfield, one of the BLACK MASK boys, whose wife died under mysterious circumstances.

According to Duane Spurlock, "Whitfield was a fascinating character, and Satterthwait does a fine job of recreating the era and fleshing out the story of his wife's death.  The writing, as always in a Satterthwait book, is top-notch. Great stuff all around."

Thanks to Duane Spurlock for the tip!

Ray Harryhausen
Like myself, I suspect many of you are also Ray Harryhausen fans.
If you are, you will want to check out the video at the following link that features all of Ray Harryhausen's creatures in chronological order.  http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/2006/12/27/ray-harryhausen/

Robert E. Howard Foundation - News on upcoming publications!
Paul Herman, on behalf of the REH Foundation, has announced that:
RHYMES OF SALEM TOWN is at the printer.
The cover is reproduced below, however, the back cover text had not yet been added at the time this image was made available to me. The printer is closed for a couple weeks during the holidays, so the book should be printed and available somewhere around mid-January.

COLLECTED LETTERS is getting final formatting (looks like it will be three volumes, right at 500 pages per volume), and it should be sent to the printer on January 7th. COLLECTED LETTERS should be available by early February.
For additional information on COLLECTED LETTERS edited by Rob Roehm, visit The Cimmerian Blog website.

The remaining unpublished prose (title still not set) is also getting final formatting and it should be ready for the printer soon. This collection may consist of one large volume or two smaller volumes.
Pre-ordering should be set up on the REH Foundation website after the first of the year.

Robert E. Howard Memorial Poetry Slam  - Saturday, January 13, 2007
The Robert E. Howard Foundation is proud to announce that the first Annual Robert E. Howard Memorial Poetry Slam will be held Saturday, January 13, 2007, at the Black Dog Tavern, 2933 Crockett Street, in Fort Worth, Texas, from 3-5 PM.

Robert E. Howard loved poetry, read and wrote it his entire life, and by the time of his death had composed over 800 poetic works. His poetic voice flows through much of his prose work. REH's poetry covered a range of topics and styles, from ballads to sonnets to free verse, from humor to anger to challenge to lament.

“Sponsoring a poetry event is a natural for the REH Foundation” said Paul Herman, one of the Directors of the Foundation. “Exposing people to REH's lesser known but very intense poetry, and encouraging others to actively work with poetry, it’s a win-win situation for everyone.”

For basic information on what a “poetry slam” is, please refer to www.poetryslam.com. In a slight modification of the usual format, participants in each round will be allowed to perform either their own work or poetry by REH. At the end of the competition, not only will participates get a portion of the gate, the best performer will receive a $100 prize, second place will receive a $50 prize. The most "Howardesque" performance, featuring either an actual REH poem or a poem based on REH's style and themes, will also receive a $100 prize, with second place again receiving $50, for a total of $300 in prize money.

The Black Dog Tavern in Fort Worth is the Metroplex' premier poetry venue, an eclectic stop that one night may have a heavy metal band, jazz the next, and a poetry slam the following night. The Black Dog is also the sponsor of one of the nation’s best slam teams, lead by the renowned Michael Guinn. And indeed, the Black Dog slam team is planning to participate in the event.

For those looking to read some REH poetry, samples will be posted at the REH Foundation website, at www.rehfoundation.org. There are also several published volumes of REH poetry that can be obtained through a local library, including ALWAYS COMES EVENING, ECHOES FROM AN IRON HARP, NIGHT IMAGES, SHADOWS OF DREAMS, and SINGERS IN THE SHADOWS. A new poetry volume, RHYMES OF SALEM TOWN AND OTHER POEMS, is expected out in mid-January.

For additional information, contact the Robert E. Howard Foundation at info@rehfoundation.org.

The world's most powerful leaders are gathering in Los Angeles for the G-8 summit, unaware that they have been targeted by two separate terrorist groups, each with its own lethal agenda. Uncovering and disarming one bomb would be difficult enough; eliminating both will be nearly impossible.

On the trail of a rabid Islamic assassin, rogue CTU agent Jack Bauer doesn't know that another conspiracy is brewing around him—a poisonous plot to violently dictate the future of the free world. If Bauer does nothing, in twenty-four hours the entire planet may be plunged into chaos, its primary heads of state ruthlessly destroyed. But if he acts, his daughter Kim will die instead.

, to be published by Baen Books in June 2007.

As previously surmised, the new collection will reprint:
1) The Spider #75: "Satan's Murder Machines," by Norvell Page, originally published in December 1, 1939
2) The Spider #26: "Death Reign of the Vampire King," by Norvell Page, originally published November 1, 1935

Bison Books - Coming in 2007!
Back to the Stone Age by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Illustrated by John Coleman Burroughs
Introduction to the Bison Books edition by Gary Dunham

The fifth installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs’s Pellucidar series, Back to the Stone Age recounts the strange adventures of Lieutenant von Horst, a member of the original crew that sailed to Pellucidar with Jason Gridley and Tarzan who is left behind in the inner world. Horst wanders friendless and alone from one danger to the next among the Stone Age peoples, mighty reptiles, and huge animals that have been extinct on the outer crust for thousands of years. But woven among the tales of savage cave men in the country of the Basti, the hideous Gorbuses in the caverns beneath the Forest of Death, and the terrible Gaz is the story of the love this cultured hero feels for a barbarian slave girl who has spurned and discouraged him, working instead toward her own mysterious goal.
336 pages, $19.95

Land of Terror by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Introduction to the Bison Books edition by Anne Harris

If you have ever wondered what a civilized man of the twentieth century would do if catapulted into an Old Stone Age where huge cave bears, saber-toothed tigers, monstrous carnivorous dinosaurs, mammoths, and mastodons roamed the savage terrain, you need look no further than Land of Terror, the sixth installment of Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series.

Years ago David Innes and Abner Perry bored straight down through five hundred miles of the Earth's crust and landed in Pellucidar, the savage, primeval world that lies at the center of the Earth. This is the story of their continuing adventures in the timeless land of perpetual noon and their encounters with the hideous creatures and savage men who pursue them. Although they encounter enemies at every turn, David and Abner find a few loyal friends as they embark on exhilarating adventures.

352 pages, $19.95
Savage Pellucidar by Edgar Rice Burroughs
Illustrated by J. Allen St. John
Introduction by Harry Turtledove

When David Innes and Abner Perry set out to search for mineral deposits in Perry's newly invented Mechanical Prospectro, they never dreamed of discovering the beautiful, terrifying world of Pellucidar five hundred miles beneath their feet. Cast into a country of fierce fighting men, beautiful women, and vicious beasts, David and Abner take sharply diverging paths. David and his mate, Dian the Beautiful, set out to teach Pellucidar the ways of civilization and succeed in gathering a number of primitive kingdoms into the Empire of Pellucidar. Meanwhile, Abner turns his inventive genius to the science of aeronautics, with dire results for both David and Dian. The seventh and final book in Edgar Rice Burroughs's Pellucidar series, Savage Pellucidar continues the epic story with a masterful blend of action, humor, and suspense.

Riders of the Steppes: The Complete Cossack Adventures, Volume Three by Harold Lamb
Edited by Howard Andrew Jones
Introduction by E. E. Knight

A master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, Khlit the Cossack, the “wolf of the steppes.” Journey with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes; match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults; rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains, skill, and a little luck.

This four-volume set collects for the first time the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features essays Lamb wrote about his stories, informative introductions by popular authors, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction.

In this third volume, the wily old Cossack Khlit may have aged but he's lost none of his guile. He shepherds his dashing grandson Kirdy into one adventure after another, finally uniting with his allies Ayub and Demid in the climactic story White Falcon—out of print since the 1920s. Here too are the exploits of Ayub and Demid, risking all to safeguard the perilous Russian border from marauding Turks, Tatars, and even bloodthirsty Russian nobles.
 544 pages, $21.95

Swords of the Steppes: The Complete Cossack Adventures, Volume Four by Harold Lamb
Edited by Howard Andrew Jones
Introduction by Barrie Tait Collins

Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features essays Lamb wrote about his stories, informative introductions by popular authors, and a wealth of rare, exciting swashbuckling fiction.

In the concluding volume, gallop into adventure with Khlit and Kirdy for their final challenge in The Wolf Master, out of print since 1933. Then, delve into a treasure trove of stories gleaned from rare magazines: an account of a desperate mission for Khlit’s old friend Ayub; three tales of the valorous Koum and the champion swordsman Gurka; two daring ventures by Stenka Razin, the Robin Hood of the steppes; five short stories of Uncle Yarak, a Cossack fighting in World War II; and more than a half dozen other swashbuckling tales from the steppes.

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER #16 - Now available!
This issue covers hard-boiled fiction and characters from the crime pulps.  Monte Herridge contributes an overview of Erle Stanley Gardner's "Senor Lobo" stories from DETECTIVE FICTION WEEKLY.  Will Murray offers a brief tribute to Grace Culver, the feisty female detective who plied her trade in a series of short stories for THE SHADOW MAGAZINE.  Gary Lovisi documents Britain's post-World War II boom in hard-boiled crime digests.  And Alfred Jan quotes the fulsome praise for detective pulps offered by world-class philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who had a special fondness for yarns written by BLACK MASK alumnus Norbert Davis.

The legendary BLACK MASK figures in three other articles as well.  In a 1929 piece penned for WRITER'S DIGEST, long-time literary agent August Lenniger interviews MASK editor Joseph T. Shaw, analyzes an entire issue on a story-by-story basis, and offers tips for aspiring authors.  We've also reprinted E. R. Hagemann's excellent 1981 article on the making of THE HARD-BOILED OMNIBUS, "Cap" Shaw's 1946 anthology of classic MASK stories.  Finally, in this issue's installment of "Pulp Page to Silver Screen," BnT editor Ed Hulse weighs in on the 1937 screen adaptation of Frederick Nebel's MacBride & Kennedy series from the MASK.

AT THE EARTH'S CORE by Edgar Rice Burroughs
ERB Press is proud to present the unedited First Edition Hardcover book text and illustrations (by J. Allen St. John) of this classic Inner Earth novel. David Innes and his inventor friend, when they sought to test the practicability of their "subterranean prospector" made an amazing discovery. The two men pierced through the Earth's crust and found, instead of a core in a highly molten and gaseous state, a world, with living, breathing, functioning humans and animals, but a world still in the Stone Age. The hair-breadth escapes of the two men, the weird monsters encountered, the touch of romance and the manner of telling make this one of Burroughs' very best.  Hardcover with dust jacket  $24.95

PELLUCIDAR by Edgar Rice Burroughs
ERB Press is proud to present the unedited First Edition Hardcover book text and illustrations (by J. Allen St. John) of this classic Inner Earth novel, a sequel to AT THE EARTH'S CORE. A traveler stretching his rug for the night on the warm sands of the Sahara, heard an intermittent ticking sound from the earth beneath his head. Digging, he unearthed a small box from which a small cable ran straight down into the sand. It contained a telegraph instrument. Thus was revealed the story set forth in this book -- the story of the adventures of David Innes in the vast horizonless country of Pellucidar, where the noonday sun shines perpetually and there is no time; and in the Land of Awful Shadows, screened by a pendent world, where the sun has never shone. And the story, too, of the search for Dian the Beautiful, and of the strange empire established by David Innes on the inside of the world we live on.  Hardcover with dust jacket  $24.95

BEYOND THIRTY by Edgar Rice Burroughs

Wildside Press - Robert E. Howard update!
The paperback edition of WINGS IN THE NIGHT, the fourth volume of The Weird Works of Robert E. Howard, went to the printer this week, probably for a print run of 5000, with most of it going into distribution.

Repackaging of volumes two and three to match the new look used for volume one and four will start in January or February, and from this point on that'll be the series design, at least for the paperbacks. There are no plans, currently, to drop the Steve Fabian artwork for the hardcover editions.

Paul Herman's trade editions of THE NEVERENDING HUNT (paperback and hardcover) are now scheduled for a June 2007 release.

Darrell Schweitzer's THE ROBERT E. HOWARD READER has been scheduled for June, with essays by Michael Moorcock, Fritz Leiber, Poul Anderson, S.T. Joshi, Don D'Ammassa, Leo Grin, Robert Weinberg, Robert M. Price, Charles Hoffman, George Scithers, Mark Hall, Gary Romeo, Steve Tompkins, Darrell Schweitzer, Scott Connors, and Howard Waldrop.

Wildside Press will probably be wrapping up the rest of The Weird Works of Robert E. Howard series, in hardcover, in February, March, April, and May, respectively.

COLUMBIA PICTURES TEAMS WITH PRODUCERS SAM RAIMI, JOSH DONEN
AND MICHAEL USLAN
TO BRING THE SHADOW TO THE SCREEN

(Culver City, Ca December 8, 2006) The Shadow, the legendary Conde Nast comic book character, will come to the big screen from Columbia Pictures and producers Sam Raimi and Josh Donen of Buckaroo Entertainment and Michael Uslan of Comic Book Movies, LLC/Branded Entertainment, it was announced today by Matt Tolmach and Doug Belgrad, Presidents of Production for Columbia Pictures.

The screenplay is being written by Siavash Farahani. CBM/Branded¹s FJ DeSanto will co-produce the film. Sam Dickerman is overseeing development of the movie for Columbia Pictures.

Often credited by Bob Kane, the creator of Batman, as the biggest influence on his creation of The Dark Knight, The Shadow was created in 1930 on what would become perhaps the most popular dramatic radio program in history.

Early 30s star and radio personality Orson Welles popularized The Shadow's catchphrase, "Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?  The Shadow knows!"  The phenomenal success of the radio show was closely followed by Street & Smith's publication of 'The Shadow Magazine,' written by Walter Gibson under the penname 'Maxwell Grant.'  Street & Smith would go on to publish 325 Shadow pulp novels.  With further triumphs as a newspaper comic strip, comic books, and merchandising, The Shadow arrived in Hollywood via a string of cliff-hanging movie serials and features variously starring Victor Jory, Kane Richmond and Rod LaRoque.  A 1994 feature starred Alec Baldwin.  Over the years, Shadow comic books and graphic novels have been published by Street & Smith, Archie, Dark Horse, Marvel, and, most notably, DC Comics.

Raimi says, "I've been a passionate Shadow fan ever since I was a kid and have long dreamed of bringing this character to the screen."

Tolmach adds, "We're thrilled to be re-teaming with Sam as he brings another legendary comic-book character to a new generation of fans.  This property is in the perfect hands."

Uslan says, "My first comic-book writing gig in the 70s was writing for DC's Shadow comics.  I had the chance to spend time with Walter Gibson and derive my understanding of the character directly from the original source himself.  Working with Sam, Josh, and the entire team at Columbia, I know I am working with the Shadow Dream Team."

Donen says, "We envision building a strong, character-driven, plot-intensive story filled with mystery and action that establishes a Shadow true to its roots and unlike any way he¹s been presented in the past."

Jerry Birenz, Counsel to Conde Nast, says, "Conde Nast has had a number of important filmmakers and companies approach us over the past few years, but only this team, as proven by the fact they have so successfully brought characters to the screen who are the crown jewels -- the life-blood -- of their respective comic book companies, has the incredible passion and experience to reignite and re-imagine The Shadow for a new generation.  It doesn¹t get better than knowing our film is in the talented hands of producer Sam Raimi."

Baen Books - A new Spider reprint series really does appear to be on the way!
Two complete novels in one volume of the adventures of the mysterious masked crime fighter known as "The Spider," hunted by the underworld and the police alike.

In one, the Spider battles an army of giant robots that has New York City under siege-a storyline so fraught with action and peril, that the very creators of Superman had borrowed it for one of the Man of Steel's comic strip adventures. It also was the inspiration for the major motion picture, "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow."

In the second novel, the spider battles a criminal mastermind who threatens the entire northeast with thousands of poison-fanged vampire bats unless his terms are met. Can even the Spider-hunted by the law as never before after faked evidence has branded him as the master of the killer bats-unmask the identity of the Vampire King before thousands die horribly?

None of the above states precisely what titles are being reprinted, but from the description, the likely source titles are:
1) The Spider #75: "Satan's Murder Machines," by Norvell Page, originally published in December 1, 1939
2) The Spider #26: "Death Reign of the Vampire King," by Norvell Page, originally published November 1, 1935
