Windy City Pulp and Paper Con - May 4 thru 6, 2007! LATE BREAKING
NEWS! The
hotel has just informed us, on April 27, that we will have access to the dealer
room earlier on Friday, May 4, than we'd been told. The REVISED Dealer Room
hours for Friday are dealer set-up beginning at 1:00 p.m., with the room open
to the public from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Sorry for the late notice, but
we were just told of this development. Guest of Honor, Ken Kelly, has had to cancel due to some health reasons. The new incarnation of The Spider Ring will
be available to fans for the FIRST TIME ANYWHERE at next weekend's
Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention in Chicago! Baen Books' new release THE SPIDER: ROBOT TITANS OF GOTHAM should be hitting bookstores at the end of May or beginning
of June. To promote this new volume, Baen and Argosy Communications
have revived the tradition of
The Spider Ring giveaway. Though they initially planned on targeting only the San Diego Comic-Con
in July, through the efforts
of Windy City's Mark Trost and Doug Ellis, Spider Ring designer Chris Kalb, and Argosy president
Joel Frieman, The Spider Ring will now make its public debut, fittingly,
at a Pulp-centric show!Baen and Argosy are eager to say "thank you" to the Pulp fans, who have kept The Spider alive all these years, and are excited to hit this boutique convention, as well as PulpCon, in advance of the splash they are hoping to make at the massive San Diego Comic-Con in late July. Baen will not have a booth at the show, so attendees are encouraged to keep their eyes peeled for the unique (and uniquely Pulpy) way in which The Spider Ring will be distributed. Thanks to Chris Kalb for the tip! During Saturday's auction, we will be auctioning 229 issues of Weird Tales from an estate.
Here's the list of the Munsey material
(and a few other unusual items) First listed below is the

PULP ART - Arriving
in comic shops May 2nd! introduction by Maria Cristina Tavera The lurid cover art of Mexican pulp novels are a pop culture revelation. Never before seen in an English - or even Spanish - language collection are the often surreal and psychedelic images of extraterrestrials, robots, dinosaurs, dastardly killers, Zorro, Santo, and many other icons from stories involving suspense, mystery, romance, and the supernatural. Collected by Minneapolis' Bobbette Axelrod (owner of the Sister Fun toy shop) and Baltimore's Ted Frankel (proprietor of the American Visionary Art Museum's store, Sideshow), Mexican Pulp Art presents the most striking examples of this sensational art form of the 1960s and 1970s. Researcher Maria Cristina Tavera's introduction tells us about the original publishing companies, artists, and comic story lines of Micro Legends, Micro Suspense, Micro Mystery, and The Unexpected. | The Pulp Rack -
New additions! This week's posting to The Pulp Rack: "Tug Norton, Detective: A Series from Detective Fiction Weekly" is another essay by Monte Herridge about a series character from that well-known magazine. Tug Norton is a private detective and creation of prolific author Edward Parrish Ware (1884-1967?). These stories are told first hand by Tug Norton: ". . . case of record in the archives of the Kaw Valley Detective Bureau, of which I, Tug Norton, am founder, owner and chief operative, . . ." ("The Queen's Patteran") Norton notes that when business is dull, he entertains and instructs himself by studying his casebook ("The Devil Winks"). This is how some of the Norton stories begin, with him reliving the case he has looked up in his casebook. Although I've posted this essay in the Adventure section, it could easily fit into the Western section, as Tug is a former cowboy, and many of his tales occur in what was the "contemporary West" as pictured in the pulps of the day. The article also includes a list of story titles in the series and the issue date in which they appeared. You'll find it all here: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/04/tug_norton_dete.html Don't miss Monte's previous DFW essay for The Pulp Rack, about series character "Hugo Oakes, Lawyer-Detective" -- a precursor of sorts to Perry Mason, and created by J. Lane Linklater. You can find it elsewhere on The Pulp Rack by visiting this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2006/07/hugo_oakes_lawy.html One of the few (sadly so) DFW authors in print these days is Erle Stanley Gardner. Hard Case Crime, the paperback imprint of Leisure Books with the wonderful retro-taste in crime fiction, has one of Gardner's Cool and Lam series novels available at Amazon: TOP OF THE HEAP. Drop a few coins in The Pulp Rack's pocket to help support our work here by purchasing this novel through this link: http://www.amazon.com/Top-Heap-Hard-Case-Crime/dp/0843953527/ref=pd_bbs_2/pulprack-20 As always, thanks for your patronage.
