Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed as a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon

Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 21-24, 2010!
The 35th Annual Friends of Old Time Radio Convention (www.fotr.net) will take place October 21-24 2010 at the Ramada Plaza hotel in Newark, NJ.
The four day event features live recreations of classic old time radio programs with all-star casts as well as memorabilia, music, panel discussions, autographs and historical presentations.  The convention is a great way to meet and show appreciation for the veterans who made old time radio great as well as get to know some of the younger actors who are working to keep the tradition alive.

The invited guest list looks great so far.  I know everyone will enjoy seeing the great Simon Jones ("Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") again. Shirley Mitchell (Lelia Ransom on Gildersleeve), New York area television host Chuck McCann, WXYZ veteran Elaine Hyman ("The Lone Ranger"), ABC announcer Bill Owen and Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin on Our Miss Brooks) are also back for more.  Local New York talk show legend Joe "Nostalgia King" Franklin will recreate his show live on stage, bringing his own surprises guests along.  Another great returning guest is Ivan Curry, star of "Bobby Benson and the B-Bar B Riders" on old time radio.  The guest list changes frequently, so keep checking the website for updates.

Thursday - Sunday programs include an afternoon program that consists of a recreation, panel discussions and dealer rooms.  The evening program features a buffet dinner in which there is at least one special guest at each table and all-star recreations.  It's a great way to socialize with the stars as well as see them perform.  On Sunday, there is a buffet breakfast and panel with remaining guests.

Shows scheduled for recreation this year include The Great Gildersleeve, The Adventures of Sam Spade, The First Nighter, Fibber McGee & Molly, Columbia Workshop, Screen Guild Theater and The Adventures of Superman.

Full information on the convention including room rates (historically low right now at $75/AAA) and registration information for the convention itself is available at www.fotr.net.

Please contact Sean Dougherty, publicity coordinator, at 201-739-2541 or SeanDD@optonline.net or @doughertysean on Twitter, or The Friends of Old

Robert E. Howard: A Collector's Descriptive Bibliography of American and British Hardcover, Paperback, Magazine, Special and Amateur Editions, with a Biography by Leon Nielsen
Foreword by Damon C. Sasser
In the same way that Tolkien is considered the father of epic fantasy, so to is Robert E. Howard considered the father of the fantasy genre of sword and sorcery. Howard is among a select group of now-revered writers who published primarily in pulp magazines. Pulps continued publishing Howard material posthumously, and his first hardcover book appeared in 1937, a year after his early death at the age of 30. Anthologies, books, comic adaptations and movies based on his work are still being brought out. Howard created one of the most popular of all fantasy characters, Conan. Other famous characters included King Kull of Atlantis, the Puritan adventurer Soloman Kane, the female warrior Red Sonya, and the Pict Bran Mak Morn.

This guide is an invaluable resource about Howard, with information for every known published work. Initial chapters provide a biography, discuss Howard’s literary legacy, and give basic tips about collecting Howards writings. The main body of the work is a bibliography of Howards published works from 1925 through 2004. Each entry includes a description and known details including publisher, date, print run, and estimated value. A thorough index locates the publication of every Howard story or poem.

will encompass almost 800 pages and include more than 5,900 illustrations.

Features of Book One

  • Annotated listings for each chapter play, including cast, directors, chapter titles and commentary.

PayPal: Click the PayPal link on the website and you will be taken to the PayPal site where you can buy the book with your PayPal account or major credit card.

Special Offer - Everyone who buys a copy of Book One will receive $5 off the purchase price of Book Two!

The forthcoming Book Two contains longer, and extensively illustrated, entries on every cliffhanger of the sound period, including the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, and Superman duos, the Flash Gordon trio, the Dick Tracy quartet, and the classic Adventures of Captain Marvel, Drums of FuManchu, Spy Smasher — 232 in all.

Also covered individually are lesser known, but quite entertaining, adventures that brought kids to the theaters each Saturday. And, of course, there is the parade of Westerns with Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Wild Bill Elliott, and others. Bela Lugosi’s serial vehicles get their individual pages or two, as do the low-priced clinkers that turned up through the years, especially in the genre’s last days.

TNL Library’s “The Green Hornet Strikes Again” is an example of Book Two’s sound entries, minus the book’s dozen illustrations for that serial.

The Movie Serial Companion: Book One - Recommended!
THE MOVIE SERIAL COMPANION Book One is the first of two books about the classic cliffhangers that thrilled the multitudes during the first half of the 20th century. The book starts off with a five-chapter history of America’s film serials that runs for 62 pages and covers both the silent and the sound film eras. The text is easily read, engaging, informative, and insightful. My interest never flagged and I learned many things that I was not previously aware of. For instance, I did not know that most serials had two directors, one shooting while the other prepared the next days work, or one doing location scenes while the other did interiors. Following the beginning chapters of the book is a 225 page annotated listing of the American serials of the silent era. The listing is done alphabetically by serial title. Most of the serials merit at least a full page which includes the date of the serial, the studio, the director(s), a listing of the players, a listing of the chapter titles, a synopsis of the story, and a brief commentary. Each listing is accompanied with numerous stills of scenes from the serial and of the players. Some of the entries also include the one-sheet advertising for the film or magazine covers featuring the serial or its players. Each serial entry averages at least 3-to-4 illustrations. Illustrations are in black and white and full color throughout. All-in-all, this book is obviously a labor of love and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to the publication of the second book in the series.

HELL ON FRIDAY
At 10:40, Johnny Saxon, detective and ex-pulp writer, was snooping through Sam Sontag's almost deserted office, keeping one appreciative eye on the luscious curves etched against the frosted glass door of Sam's private hide-away. At 11:20, Johnny was in a bar, fortifying himself against the cold night air. At 12:03, he was gasping with delight as the incredibly lovely vision coming down the ramp at the Grand Central Station actually turned out to be the fabulous Dulcy Dickens, the girl who was scheduled to set the publishing world on its ear. And then at 12:40, just as Dulcy was saying, "Oh, Shonny" in her soft caressing voice, the cops came in and carted Johnny off to jail. It was a hell of a Friday night... And the next morning, Johnny found that he had never before understood what trouble really meant. Sontag was dead, murdered; Dulcy had disappeared with complete efficiency, and Johnny himself was gazing darkly into the business-end of the big gun held in the nervous fist of Jasper Ward, the late Sam Sontag's racketeer partner. It was find Dulcy Dickens--or else!
MURDER IS FORGETFUL
When the enormously wealthy J. P. Smith retained Johnny Saxon, private investigator and former detective story writer, to go to the magnificent Long Island estate of his lovely, wealthy sister-in-law, Irene Smith, to help her regain her memory, lost when her husband died in an automobile accident, Johnny was certain of but two things: Irene Smith's husband had not died by accident and Irene Smith herself, helpless in the complete blankness of amnesia, was under sentence of death from someone--from a murderer who was gambling against time that he could silence her forever before she could remember the night of the fatal accident. In Irene's charming, red-headed daughter, Kay, Johnny Saxon and his assistant, Moe Martin, thought they found their first suspect--for Kay had hated her father violently for his treatment of her mother--but after, Kay and Johnny had unexpectedly faced death together she became their strongest ally. For Kay, deeply devoted to her mother, opened more than one vista to the tangled relationships of a large and wealthy family--among others, to the character of J. P. Smith, to the secret drinking orgies of her aunt Nancy and to the dangerous eccentricities of delightful Grandfather Smith. Smart and swift-moving, "Murder Is Forgetful" is an up-to-the-minute story of a bizarre Long Island crime.
THE QUEEN CITY MURDER CASE
The tall fur-clad brunette at the auction rooms somehow reminded Johnny Saxon of an over-anxious burlesque queen. Certainly she did not look like a connoisseur of antiques. So it was with fascinated curiosity that the New York private detective observed her almost terrified determination to obtain possession of the old spinet desk, and, when that ramshackle article appeared upon the block, mischievously bid it up to an outrageous price. Developments were quick and startling. When Johnny next saw Jeannette Evans, at her apartment, the brunette was dead. And Johnny himself was ticketed as Police Suspect Number One for her murder. Johnny and his man Friday, Moe Martin, had come to Cincinnati on vacation. Pretty Nancy O'Neil, an old flame of Johnny's, quickly appealed to the detective to undertake the case of her married sister, Bess Sherman, threatened by an anonymous blackmailer. Then came the incident at the auction rooms. Johnny could hardly have foreseen how closely the terror of Jeannette Evans and the predicament of Bess Sherman were to be related, or have guessed the role to be played in  the double mystery by the ruthless "lifer" just escaped from the Ohio State Penitentiary. These were puzzles not wholly to be resolved until the exciting snowstorm climax at a nearby winter colony two or three days later.

Haffner Press: TERROR IN THE HOUSE - Off to the printer!
Terror in the House: The Early Kuttner, Volume One

TERROR IN THE HOUSE: THE EARLY KUTTNER, VOLUME ONE is off to the printer
and it's a race against the clock to make a debut at World Fantasy 36 in Columbus, OH on October 28th.

Before his marriage to (and subsequent collaborations with) Catherine L. Moore, Henry Kuttner was a frequent contributor to the pulp magazines that specialized in the weird, supernatural, horror, and science fiction genre. Beginning in 1936, with the minor classic "The Graveyard Rats," Kuttner launched a steady stream of short stories aimed at Weird Tales, Mystery Tales, Thrilling Wonder Stories, and others.

Writing for Weird Tales brought Kuttner into direct correspondence with that magazine's premier contributor. H. P. Lovecraft. Kuttner set several stories in Lovecraft's "Cthulhu Mythos" and several are presented in TERROR IN THE HOUSE including: "The Secret of Kralitz," "The Eater of Souls," "The Salem Horror," The Jest of Droom-Avista," "The Frog," "The Invaders," and "The Bells of Horror."

Given the short lengths of Kuttner's stories, he had to be prolific and he contributed reams of copy to the weird-menace (a sub-genre of horror where a seemingly supernatural plot is resolved with a pedestrian ending) pulps, Thrilling Mystery and Spice Mystery.

It was his specialization for "spicy" or sexed-up stories that led Kuttner to write most (two stories and one novelette) of the first issue of Marvel Science Stories, arguably the first "spicy" science fiction pulp.

TERROR IN THE HOUSE is the first volume in a set collecting many of Kuttner's earliest stories, most of which have never been reprinted.

Preface by Richard Matheson
Introduction by Garyn G. Roberts, Ph.D.
Illustrated by Harry V. Parkhurst

Hellfire: Plague of Dragons by Robert Weinberg - Now available!
In the fourteenth century, a horrific plague swept out from the barbaric East to decimate the great nations of Europe. This killer that spared no man, woman, or child—the Black Death—is well-known and documented. But there was also a second disaster that occurred at the same time, no less brutal than the Black Death, a living plague that killed without mercy which has gone untold and unrecorded—until now. A plague consisting of a horde of monstrous beasts unlike any seen before, or since: a plague of dragons.

This lavishly illustrated volume tells the story through a lost manuscript and accompanying artwork by fourteenth-century French wine merchant and confidant of popes and kings, Robertus of Avignon (1320–1387), found in the Historical Museum of New York in 2005. Discovered in a box of artifacts, historical documents, and original illustrations purchased by the museum in 1922, his illuminated manuscript and more than two dozen illustrations are reproduced in this spectacular volume that brings to life in great detail the majestic, domineering, and dangerous qualities of dragons.

Featuring the breathtaking images of best-selling fantasy art illustrator Tom Wood and written by prolific author Robert Weinberg, this vibrant and remarkably original book is sure to be a must-have for dragon lovers and historical fantasy fans alike.

Ghost Stories: The Magazine and Its Makers: Volume 2

Edited by John Locke

In an era of odd magazines, Macfadden's GHOST STORIES (1926-31) was a standout of the strange. It tapped into occult interest by presenting haunted tales that may or may not have been true. If they were true, then GHOST STORIES was testament to the presence of spirits in every exciting arena, the Western Front, gangland, aviation, the Klondike, the circus, the theater; not coincidentally, all the varied settings that pulp stories employed.

The personnel that created GHOST STORIES, though not well remembered today in most cases, were an uncommonly talented and fascinating group. They include poets and scholars, war heroes and war correspondents, adventurers and Bohemians. A few were titans of magazine publishing and editing. A few developed into prolific pulpsters; a few became bestselling authors; a few went Hollywood; one earned a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. And because it's GHOST STORIES, a few led haunted lives: within these pages appear two murderers, a murder victim, a suicide, and several casualties of tragic accidents.

Volume 1 presents 19 spooky tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes the history of GHOST STORIES, and detailed biographies of every GHOST STORIES editor, and every author whose stories appear in Volume 1.

Volume 2 presents 15 eerie tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes detailed biographies of every author whose stories appear in Volume 2, and every GHOST STORIES cover artist. Also included is a gallery of all 64 GHOST STORIES covers.

All stories complete with original illustrations.

Pulp 2.0 Press Mad Pulp Bastard Bill Cunningham announced today that the publisher is adding a never-before-seen Lester Dent tale to its upcoming wild west book release RADIO WESTERN ADVENTURES (RWA). Glut’s cover tale, “Who Really Was That Masked Man?” to create a western “double feature” tribute to Jim Harmon, the Old Time Radio historian and author, to whom this special book is dedicated.

The contract for “Snare Savvy” was negotiated by the author’s agent, noted pulp writer and historian Will Murray on behalf of the Dent estate. The story is a classic western featuring Dent’s smart alec cowboy character Haw Kain who rides into town and a whole mess of trouble when he goes up against greedy land grabbers looking to strike it rich.

“We are pleased as punch to be able to add Dent’s ‘Snare Savvy’ to Radio Western Adventures,” said Cunningham. “ It makes an already unique book like RWA that much more special to western and pulp fans. As I read it I could easily see Roy Rogers and Dale Evans as the lead characters Haw Kain and Genie Quayle. Their banter matched perfectly, each giving as good as he or she got. I’m ecstatic over the prospect of publishing a pulp master like Dent’s work, and grateful that Will Murray thought Pulp 2.0 would be a good publisher for the tale.”

Radio Western Adventures will be published on Amazon’s Kindle platform for digital reading and will later come out as a print release via Createspace. The Kindle edition will feature both stories as well as an essay tribute to Jim Harmon whose love for radio western heroes was well known amongst fans. This digital edition will also include several photos resurrected from Don Glut’s archives showing the profound influence these radio cowboys had on the author and his peers. Pulp 2.0 Press’s print edition will include all of the above plus even more bonus features exclusive to the print version. Both versions will feature a stunning cover by artist Nik Macaluso (www.scripttease.tv) who created the fantastic blaxploitation cover art for Pulp 2.0’s first release BROTHER BLOOD (also by Glut).

Mike Chomko Books, and Adventure House.

Edgar Rice Burroughs: The Second Century - Now available!
In the 20th century, nearly a century ago, Edgar Rice Burroughs began publishing books about John Carter of Mars and Tarzan of the Apes. And that was just the beginning. His imagination took us on many new and exciting adventures. And his adventures are continue to be exciting entertainment even today. His works are still adapted into games, comics, television shows and motion pictures. Indeed, film director James Cameron has acknowledged that it was the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs that inspired almost directly much of the world and creatures of his record shattering motion picture, AVATAR. Many authors, artists, film makers and scientists credit Edgar Rice Burroughs with inspiring them to pursue their careers. Now, scholars and fans, members of a branch of the highly respected Burroughs Bibliophiles (the National Capital Panthans), have compiled this new book to share their joy of his works. With creativity and insight, they examine why so many people in so many countries of the world still find vital reasons to read the books by Edgar Rice Burroughs - even as we enter a second century of their entertaining the world. This book contains poetry, fiction, comics and illustrations as well as useful information on collecting all things Burroughs.

FANTOMAS: The Complete Film Series (1913-1914) DVD Set - Available September 21st!
Based on the phenomenally popular French pulp novellas, Louis Feuillade's outrageous, ambitious FANTÔMAS series became the gold standard of espionage serials in pre-WWI Europe, and laid the foundation for such immortal works as Feuillade's own Les Vampires and Fritz Lang's Dr. Mabuse films.

René Navarre stars as the criminal lord of Paris, the master of disguise, the creeping assassin in black: Fantômas. Over the course of five feature films (which combined to form a 5 1/2-hour epic), Fantômas, along with his accomplices and mistresses, are pursued by the equally resourceful Inspector Juve (Edmund Bréon) and his friend, journalist Jerôme Fandor (Georges Melchior).

Strange Wonders: A Collection of Rare Fritz Leiber Works - Coming in October!
By Fritz Leiber
In regards to Fritz Leiber, I believe that publication of such unpublished and uncollected works only strengthens his literary greatness. Through fragments, drafts and practice writings, we can clearly see the evolution from Leiber, the amateur, to Leiber, the professional. We are exposed to the clear way in which he dedicated his life to the written word and trained his abilities to produce the award-winning masterpieces that we read even today. While some may object to such a volume, I ask them this—is not the dream just as important as the empire that had been built from it? Are not the blueprints and sketches as impressive as the buildings and the artwork? We must place all this into perspective, and see that publishing such works is not a smear upon Leiber’s legacy. Rather, it completes a full circle. If we are asked to be thorough in the biography of an individual, then we must also do so for their bibliography.

Mike Chomko Books, and Adventure House.

TALES OF THE BAGMAN

(A New Hero in Old Chicago)

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers are happy to announce the release of their thirtieth title, TALES OF THE BAGMAN by B.C. Bell.   This book features the debut of a brand new pulp hero, the Bagman, and he’s unlike any other crime buster you’ve ever seen before.

In the 1930s, Chicago was one of the fastest growing metropolises in the country.  Situated on mighty Lake Michigan, it was the home to millions of hard working Americans looking to a better themselves.  The Windy City was also shackled by its bootleg history, a time of violent gang wars that had permanently established a brutal underworld empire second to none.  Corruption was the order of the day and both the police and government were in the pay of the mob bosses.

Frank “Mac” McCullough was a foot-soldier in one of the city’s toughest families until he was ordered to rough up his uncle; a decent man with a gambling problem.  The innate decency in Mac rebelled and suddenly he found himself up against the very men he had once admired and followed.  Determined to put an end to their lawlessness, he put a bag over his head as a crude disguise only to become labeled the Bagman by the press.

Now writer B.C. Bells tells the amazing stories of old Chicago’s most unique hero.  Aided solely by a tough, black WW I veteran named Crankshaft, Mac wages war against the mobs in these fast pace, non-stop action tales pulp fans will cheer. “Bell’s writing is a terrific mix of pulp action and wry humor,” applauds Airship 27 Productions’ Ron Fortier.  “It’s really a breath of fresh air in the pulp genre and we know our fans are going to love the Bagman.” Designed by Rob Davis, the book features nine illustrations by Kelly Everaert and a gorgeous cover by Laura Givens.
Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to present pulpdom’s newest avenger, THE BAGMAN.

Black Coat Press - September releases are now available!
HELGVOR OF THE BLUE RIVER
Two short novels of prehistoric adventure by J.-H. Rosny aîné and adapted by Brian Stableford—“The Giant Feline” and the title story.
In Helgvor of the Blue River (1929), two desperate women flee their barbarous tribe, and cross paths with a prodigious warrior. The Giant Feline (1918) features two friends of different races who set off in search of greener pastures for their tribe, befriend a wild creature, and ally themselves with Wolf-Women... Rosny’s final, action-packed prehistoric adventure novels chart the domestication and integration of savage human instincts into sympathetic culture. Together with Vamireh and Quest for Fire, they combine the restless vigor of youth, the violence and wisdom of ages, the species-imperative of accepting difference and diversity, and the exhilarating joy of defying tyranny and death.
$23 (softcover)

CHRONOLYSIS
One of the most important French SF novels of the 1970s, Michael Jeury’s novel deals with time and its manipulation through the use of chronolytic drugs. Its protagonists are psychronauts, helpless explorers of a confusing, multidimensional universe, facing threats from alternate realities, such as Harry Krupp Hitler 1st, Emperor of the Undetermined, or the mysterious Phords from the future world of Garichankar. They search for secret paradises, hidden within the folds of space and time, away from their bleak realities. Also includes a foreword by Theodore Sturgeon, a biography and illustrated bibliography of Jeury, and a never-before-published short story. Adapted by Maxim Jakubowski. $23 (softcover)

THE SONG OF MONTSÉGUR
A team of spelunkers is found dead in mysterious circumstances in the shadow of the once-proud Cathar redoubt of Montségur, in Southern France. What mysterious treasure were they seeking--and did they find it? A ruthless battle over long-buried secrets is going to pit the Roman Catholic Church against an ancient secret society and descendents of the Nazis who once looked for the Holy Grail in Montségur, with the very future of Humanity at stake...

Published in France two years before the world-famous Da Vinci Code, The Song of Montségur is an award-winning, fast-paced supernatural thriller which blends elements from French history with modern-day conspiracies.

Hamilton/Brackett Day - October 21, 2010!
Organizer Don Sutton and the Kinsman Historical Society have selected October 21, 2010 as the date for the (happily) re-named "Hamilton/Brackett Day."  Haffner Press will send and post updates as they become available, but the approach this year is to acknowledge the efforts of *both* Ed & Leigh, and the date has been moved from the middle of summer and to Hamilton's birthday.  Leigh's birthday is December 7th, but Northeast Ohio's weather can be dicey at that time of the year.
