| Gabriel Hunt - News update from Charles Ardai! Apologies for the long silence on the Hunt front. As some of you may know, Dorchester Publishing, the publisher we've been working with over the past half dozen years, first to put out our Hard Case Crime line of crime novels and then, more recently, to publish the Gabriel Hunt series of adventure novels, fell on hard times this past summer and is still digging out from under. As a result, they temporarily stopped publishing new books, and the consequence was that the sixth Hunt novel -- HUNT THROUGH NAPOLEON'S WEB -- didn't come out in October as scheduled. We've been in talks with Dorchester about the fate of that book and the line as a whole, and I wanted to bring you up to date. Happily, the news is good: In a classic, Hunt-like example of snatching survival from the jaws of certain doom, Dorchester will resume publishing paperback novels in 2011, albeit in the larger 'trade' paperback format (typically about 5 inches by 8 inches) rather than the smaller 'mass market' format (about 4 by 7 inches). You wouldn't think that extra inch in either direction would make much difference, but apparently it does for various distribution-related reasons. Alas, it also means that anyone who has the first five Hunt novels in mass market format won't be able to get the sixth in matching size -- and being a collector and a purist myself, I know how annoying that is. But on the positive side, the plan is to reissue all the earlier Hunt books in the new, larger trade size, which should give the whole series a new chance to reach a wide audience. We don't have a definite date from Dorchester yet for when the trade editions will start arriving in stores, or what the schedule will be, but as soon as we do, we'll let you know. (Yes, if you look on Amazon.com, you'll see a projected pub date of August 8, 2011 for HUNT THROUGH NAPOLEON'S WEB. I'm not sure whether to believe that or not. We'll keep you posted.) In the meantime, you might be interested to know that a company called AudioRealms is releasing the Hunt novels in audiobook format. They started with HUNT THROUGH THE CRADLE OF FEAR (a personal favorite of mine...), and I have to say that the performance by reader Jim VanDusen is first rate. The unabridged reading runs 8 hours, so you've got several car rides worth of adventure in store for you! And AudioRealms is working on the other Hunt novels as we speak -- hopefully you'll be able to get all six before too much longer. If you'd like to try CRADLE OF FEAR, you can get it on CD or download it to your computer immediately as an mp3. Just go to AudioRealms and click on the Hunt cover on their home page. And e-book editions of the first 5 titles are still available, with the e-book of #6 scheduled to come out at the same time the paperback edition hits stores. So...Gabriel Hunt is still alive and kicking. He's taken a bit of a beating, but this is one man who knows how to get up again when he's down. Stay tuned for more news -- and for more adventure. | Herman Hascal Giles R. I. P. Western writer Herman Hascal Giles died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010, in a hospice facility in Bristol, Tennessee. He was 88. Giles was well known locally as a former newspaperman and had been the publisher of our leading regional newspaper - The Bristol Herald Courior - for 30 years beginning about 1950, but pulpfans will remember him as Hascal Giles, the author of 5 novels and several dozen western short stories for MASKED RIDER and other western pulps. | Mysterious Press - Relaunch in Fall 2011! Grove Atlantic is relaunching the Mysterious Press with legendary editor Otto Penzler in Fall 2011. The imprint will publish 10 to 12 new books a year in hardcover and paperback. The original Mysterious Press launched in 1975 and was sold to Warner Books in 1989. Penzler recently reacquired the name from Hachette, which bought Warner Books in 2005. Grove Atlantic publisher Morgan Entrekin said his house has been successfully publishing mysteries for the last few years, most notably with Donna Leon, author of the Commisario Guido Brunetti novels. “We are thrilled to start this partnership with Otto Penzler, who is recognized as one of the premier editors and publishers of mysteries and thrillers working today,” Entrekin said. | Conan - Feature film release date announced! Lionsgate has picked a release date for Marcus Nispel's reimagining of Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian in 3D a.k.a. Conan 3D, and that date is August 19, 2011, which means it will be facing two other 3D movies, Fright Night 3D and Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World. (Final Destination 5 opens in 3D just one week later!) We're trying to get a head-count of how many will be attending, so please drop me a quick e-mail to let me know you'll be there Saturday (and if you'll be able to join us Friday night). Also let me know if there's a change to your presentation or if you have something you'd like to present. We've got a great lineup for the con. We've also got a special treat: We'll do a video linkup with the Gotham Pulp Collectors Club to say hello. The GPCC will be celebrating their fifth anniversary on Nov. 13, so they should have a good turnout, too. Among the usual attendees are Robert Lesser (of "Pulp Art" fame), Ed Hulse (who edits Blood 'n' Thunder zine), Chris Kalb (proprietor of the Doc Savage website The 86th Floor and The Spider Returns), Mark Halegua (of Pulps 1st and soon-to-be author), David Saunders (son of pulp artist Norman Saunders and a pulp art historian himself), dealer Rick Hall, and collectors Andrew Porter, Leo Doroschenko and Atticus Gannaway. Who knows who might be there! Back to the lineup. Here's what's planned: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12 Courtney Rogers has kindly offered his house as the Friday night base for Doc Con. We'll venture out for dinner, return to the Rogers Radio Studios for a Doc Savage radio show re-enactment, then spend time visiting. Margaret Brundage, Grand Mistress of the Weird Tales! The REH: TWO-GUN RACONTEUR blog has posted an article on Margaret Brundage. During the 1930s, getting your story illustrated on the cover of Weird Tales by Margaret Brundage was a prize coveted by most of the magazine's contributors, and Robert E. Howard was certainly no exception. There is little doubt that he would purposefully insert a scene of a nude or nearly nude damsel in distress, often writhing at the business end of a whip, to give his story an edge in the race for the cover painting. Other authors were also on the bandwagon and frequently hastily added or modified a scene just to catch the attention of editor Farnsworth Wright, who personally selected the scene for the cover illustration.
