The Exploits of the Patent Leather Kid by Erle Stanley Gardner, edited by Bill Pronzini
The Patent Leather Kid is an elegant crook, hiding his identity with mask, gloves, and shoes made out of black patent leather. In truth, he is a wealthy, seemingly indolent socialite, who becomes a terror to the underworld. In the gang-ridden world of the Depression, The Kid knows that “the rulers of today were the corpses of tomorrow, where survival was the price of keen observation and rapid thought.” His enemy, Inspector Brame, believes that The Kid “is apparently one who loves adventure. His crimes are committed for excitement, rather than gain. And, in everything he does, he gives proof of a superior mentality.”

This is the third volume in Crippen & Landru's collections of Erle Stanley Gardner's short stories. The book is edited by the modern master of the private-eye story, Bill Pronzini. It is also the 30th volume in our “Lost Classics” series.

Orange Pulp: The Pulp Magazine and Contemporary Culture - January 25th until June 17, 2011!
The Special Collections Research Center's (SCRC) new exhibition opens this week. Orange Pulp: The Pulp Magazine and Contemporary Culture showcases the university's world-class collection of pulp magazines and pulp paintings--starting with the acquisition of the Street and Smith archive in 1967 and continuing through the acquisitions of the A. A. Wyn (Ace Books), Hugo Gernsback, and Forrest J Ackerman collections. Further, the exhibit examines pulp culture by re-creating the worlds of the publishers, writers, artists, and readers who promulgated it. An opening reception will be held at 5 p.m. on January 26 on the sixth floor of Bird Library.

The exhibit, which spans two locations, will be available from January 25th until June 17. On display in the sixth-floor SCRC gallery will be pulp magazines, notably titles like Weird Tales and Amazing Stories; the typescript of Isaac Asimov's "Strange Playfellow," which introduced readers to one of science fiction's best known characters, Robbie the Robot; and correspondence with figures like Ray Bradbury. The SCRC gallery is open on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Tuesday and Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

An Open Letter - Pulpsters Documentary
Dear Pulpfest Community,

I wanted to take an opportunity to reach out to the Pulpfest audience as I prepare to produce a documentary over the next year called Pulpsters, which will take a closer look at pulps and the people who collect/trade/buy & sell them at events like Pulpfest.  I’m reaching out because I need your help!

My production team and I are seeking several interested parties for on-camera interviews and even “collection tours,” as you pull back the curtain on your fandom and involvement in the pulp community. We would be interested in interviewing you in your home or office, on-camera, and perhaps even working with you over a weekend to have you show us how what pulps mean to you, why being a Pulpfest dealer or attendee matters and what influence the group and pulps have had on you personally.

We’re taking a modestly budgeted approach, and as a result we wouldn’t be able to provide compensation beyond the value of communicating the love of pulps and the enrichment of the community in which we’re all members. We will travel to you at your convenience to film with you as schedules allow.

In addition, our goal is to attend Pulpfest 2011 next summer and cover the show from a documentary standpoint – to not only showcase the event but also the camaraderie shared between every attendee.

As a filmmaker I know it is my responsibility to maintain honesty and integrity with what I’m showing, and so I am approaching Pulpsters with the utmost respect and admiration for not just the books themselves, but the community surrounding the niche audience and the people who have made pulp fests and conventions a regular part of their annual schedules. Having grown up through a pulp event I’ve been conditioned not to call by name, the Pulpfest scene has always been a part of life for me and my family.

I look forward to hearing from those who are interested and willing to be a part of the Pulpsters production! Please feel free to reach out to me via email or telephone, and we can begin coordinating a date and time to discuss the world of pulps with you!

JOHN HALE LABORATORY SLEUTH by Ed Earl Repp

“You’re the fellow they call the ‘Laboratory Sleuth,’ aren’t you?” Hale smiled at mention of the nickname reporters had tagged on him some time ago. At first he had been put out when the newspapers smeared the brand of sensationalism on his profession; then, as he found his business doubled overnight, he decided free advertising of that nature had its advantages. His fees were high; but not exorbitant in view of the fact that he was never called until everyone else had failed. The complete series, fully illustrated.

The Serial Squadron: DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST
Begins shipping February 1st!

THE MOST THRILLING WESTERN SERIAL EVER MADE
AND THE LONGEST SOUGHT-AFTER BY FANS IS ON ITS WAY TO DVD RELEASE!!!

Winston Churchill once said, "My tastes are simple. I'm easily satisfied with the best."
Well, folks, you're about to see what that really means.
There's no doubt whatsoever that DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST is one of the BEST serials ever.

This DVD is being prepared from a new high-quality, extremely stable and clear digital transfer from collector Jack Mathis's original print which he was authorized to print down from the Republic Pictures master.
The serial was never re-released or shown on television because apparently shortly after its original release parts of it if not the entire serial were sold off as stock footage, which may have resulted in the loss of some of the original reels of sound.

The missing audio in Chapters 1, 6, 7, and 8 has been replaced here with authentic sound effects and dubbing for missing dialogue. Most of the replacement audio and music comes from the serial itself and is seamlessly integrated with existing audio and newly stripped-in sound effects. Meaning it all sounds pretty good and you may not be able to tell repaired sections of the film from ones with original sound.

2-DVD Set
Black and White; 196 minutes
12 Chapters and Original Theatrical Trailer
Produced by Eric Stedman, the Serial Squadron and Brigham Young University Film Archive Includes a fairly beat-up but complete version of the original theatrical trailer

Anticipated release date: About December 20, 2010

The Shadow: The History and Mystery of the Radio Program, 1930-54
Written by Martin Grams, Jr., author of THE GREEN HORNET:
A HISTORY OF RADIO, MOTION PICTURES, COMICS, AND TELEVISION
Coming March 31st , Pre-order now for free shipping!

THE SHADOW -- for the consideration of those who never heard a radio broadcast or read a pulp magazine -- was a supernatural sleuth with a sepulchral chuckle. A detective whose success in tracking down criminals became a popular long-running radio program from 1937 to 1954, after beginning a number of years before as a ghost-like voice introducing a bone-chilling murder play that concluded with a sinister laugh. The program, DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE HOUR, premiered in July of 1930 and within a few months, the horror host overshadowed the crime stories, and spawned his own magazine. Ultimately, the pulp stories ceased in 1949 but the radio program out-lasted the magazine for an additional five years.

This 820-page book (authorized through Conde Nast) documents the entire history of the long-running radio program, with rare never-before-seen photographs, interviews with cast and crew, and a carefully organized presentation of the facts. Numerous unexplored aspects of The Shadow are revealed, such as when The Shadow unmasked in the summer of 1931 on stage in St. Louis, the 1935 MacGrgeor & Sollie transcription discs, Jack Benny spoofs (including one that never made it to the air), the department store manager who was mistaken by the kids in the neighborhood of being The Shadow and hid for that particular half-hour so he wouldn't disillusion the children, pulp novels adapted for the radio program, and much more! Through extensive research of original radio scripts, newspapers on microfilm and various archives across the country, this book is sure to please both casual and devoted fans of THE SHADOW.

An extensive episode guide with plot summaries and an index enhance the book's appeal.

"For those who first heard THE SHADOW on the air when radio was young, this book will bring back memories. For those too young to remember the radio show, this is a wonderful introduction. For the collector and historian of old-time radio, there are facts here they may be seeing for the first time. For everyone else, this is a book to treasure."  -- J. Randolph Cox, Editor, DIME NOVEL ROUND-UP

"There are historians and authors who, from time to time, have been quoted on internet message boards, staged panels at conventions and magazine articles -- all borrowing the scholarship of Martin Grams," remarks Terry Salomonson of Audio Classics. "I know for a fact that in the past year, two historians were paid to do write-ups for their magazines, because of their name status, and the editors were unaware that most of the information in those articles [originated from] Martin's books and or phone calls and emails they placed to Martin."

THE SHADOW book will be released on March 31. The suggested retail price is $29.95.

AIRSHIP 27 PRODUCTIONS GOES DIGITAL

For the first time since their start up, Airship 27 Productions, producer of new pulp novels and anthologies featuring classic pulp heroes, is going digital.  For the first time readers will be able to purchase pdf files of a title, to include all interior illustrations and cover art and then download these to the new models of E-readers currently on the market today.

“We’ve been working at this for several years now,” Ron Fortier, Managing Editor of
Airship 27 Productions, reported recently.  “The problem was always transferring the original book files so as not to lose the marvelous illustrations that were an intrinsic part of all our titles.  With today’s breakthrough technology, the very same pdfs we use for printing can now be read on E-readers.”

AudioComics - Pulp and Classic Comic Heroes come to radio drama in the "Audiothology" MEN OF MYSTERY
The Phantom Detective. The Woman in Red. The Domino Lady. Secret Agent X. The Black Terror. Airboy and Valkyrie. The Flame. Ms. Masque. Beginning in 2011, these classic pulp heroes and comic book characters from the 1930’s and 1940’s will come to audio drama for the first time in brand new stories from today’s leading pulp authors as The AudioComics Company presents its follow-up project to their critically-acclaimed adaptation of Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta’s Starstruck: the MEN OF MYSTERY series.

For these stories, we’re keeping these characters rooted in their origins and time periods: Hammett’s San Francisco and Chandler’s Los Angeles. California in the dirty thirties and forties was the new wild west: immoral, violent, and wearing the white hat and a badge didn’t mean you didn’t have suspect motives. With the lines so badly blurred, the only way to meter justice was behind a mask. Furthermore, characters such as The Black Terror and The Flame will be written with a ‘pulp sensibility,’ as if they were originally written as pulp heroes. Men of Mystery adventures will feature all of the suspense, all of the hard-boiled action, and the breakneck cliffhanger energy of classic movie serials.

Writers and CD/Mp3 artists will be announced in the new year, with recordings commencing in late 2011 in San Francisco, beginning with several new Green Lama and Domino Lady stories. MoM plays will be released first as pay-per-download Mp3 serial recordings and then to community radio stations, with collected compact disc “audiothologies” available starting in 2012. In addition, The AudioComics Company will release several free short MoM pieces as digital content for mobile phones.

Conan's Brethren: The Complete Collection - Now available!

Howard was a pulpwriter who turned his hand to everything from historical adventure and detective stories to Western and boxing fiction - and invented the genre now known as sword-and-sorcery: it is for these tales of heroic fantasy and horror that he is best remembered. Hard Case Crime - News Update!
Bit by bit, we're getting closer to the re-launch of Hard Case Crime with our new publisher, Titan Books. Our backlist titles are already available for pre-order from bookstores and online booksellers such as Amazon.com and BN.com; copies will start shipping in February.  And we've got new books on the way, too -- if you go to our Web site, www.HardCaseCrime.com, you'll find cover art and sample chapters for four upcoming titles, all of them brand new:

GETTING OFF: A Novel of Sex and Violence by Lawrence Block (writing as Jill Emerson) -- The story of a beautiful young woman who sets off on a mission to kill every man she's ever slept with (and she's slept with quite a few). For this book, Lawrence Block is reviving a pseudonym he hasn't used in almost 40 years, under which he wrote seven particularly sexy books back in the day. When he saw how sexy this new one was coming out, he thought...that's the Jill Emerson in me coming out again...

THE CONSUMMATA by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins -- In the late 1960s, Mickey Spillane announced he was writing a new novel featuring the star of his bestseller THE DELTA FACTOR, but after writing half the book, he set he manuscript aside.  Twenty years later, he handed the unfinished manuscript to his friend Max Allan Collins, suggesting that Max might finish it someday.  And twenty-some years after that...it's finally done. It's the story of one thief going after another against the backdrop of Miami's Cuban-American community, and it's classic Spillane. Anyone who misses the Good Old Stuff will find plenty to love here.

QUARRY'S EX by Max Allan Collins -- This is one I know you've been waiting for a long time, the next story in the saga of the hit man known as Quarry (star of THE LAST QUARRY, THE FIRST QUARRY, and QUARRY IN THE MIDDLE). This time, Quarry sets out to protect a movie director who's been marked for murder...only to discover that the director is married to Quarry's ex-wife, the woman whose infidelity pushed him into a life of crime in the first place.

CHOKE HOLD by Christa Faust -- Another long-awaited title, this is the follow-up to Christa's Edgar Award-nominated MONEY SHOT. Ex-porn star Angel Dare is back; when a old co-star is gunned down in front of her, it's up to her to get his 18-year-old son, a hotheaded MMA fighter, to Las Vegas in one piece while two separate groups of killers are gunning for them.
\

Lots to look forward to!  Do check out the covers -- and if you're hungry for some great reading now, you can prepare for the new books coming out (which doesn't happen till September/October) by ordering any of the old ones you've missed.  If you haven't met Quarry or Angel Dare yet, you're in for a treat -- grab yourself a copy of MONEY SHOT or the earlier Quarry books.  For Spillane fans, there's DEAD STREET, Mickey's last novel.  And we have five other books by Lawrence Block you can enjoy while waiting for GETTING OFF to come out: GRIFTER'S GAME, THE GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART, LUCKY AT CARDS, A DIET OF TREACLE, and KILLING CASTRO.

Other news...
Things are moving forward on the film adaptation of LITTLE GIRL LOST -- I spent an afternoon with the screenwriter who's penning the adaptation, showing him around some of the real-world locations where scenes from the book take place.  (And scenes from its sequel, SONGS OF INNOCENCE.  We checked out the tunnels under Columbia University, and the all-night tempura joint on Broadway, and FAO Schwarz...)  No guarantee the movie will go before the cameras, but...every step we take makes it that much more likely.

And HAVEN, the TV series based (loosely) on our 13th book, Stephen King's THE COLORADO KID, is gearing up for its second season on SyFy.  The writers are working in a white-hot storytelling heat, with filming scheduled to begin in a few months.  I'm biased, but I think the show really hit its stride in the second half of the season last year, and there are some great stories coming up.  We don't have a premiere date yet for the second season, but I'll let you know as soon as we do.

One final bit of news (if you'll forgive a bit of boasting by a proud father): the Ardai/Novik clan saw an addition in December, a baby girl named Evidence ("Evi" for short).  We'll add a photo of her to the Web site just as soon as she's old enough to wear a fedora.

Rare “Shadow” Films to be Screened
This year PulpFest celebrates the 80th anniversary of the launching of The Shadow Magazine,
which literally changed the course of pulp history by creating the vogue
in rough-paper publications devoted to a single character.
As it happens, 2011 is also the 80th anniversary of The Shadow’s celluloid debut;
the character was featured in six short subjects released to theaters
between the summer of 1931 and the spring of 1932.

PulpFest, in conjunction with Anthony Tollin’s Sanctum Books,
has obtained copies of three Shadow featurettes
—including the first—
and will kick off its anniversary celebration of The Shadow Magazine
by screening them on Thursday evening, July 28th.

Robert E. Howard Days - June 10 & 11, 2011!
As the snows blow cold here in NW Indiana (and most parts of the country, actually) it’s the very best time to turn our thoughts to the warmer upcoming months. Specifically, Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas, is happening once again in 2011 (“officially”) on June 10 & 11. Hope you can make plans to be there. There will be many more details forthcoming this week as we get the REH Days Information Page tuned up for 2011, so hang with us and stay tuned.

This year, under the sponsorship of The Robert E. Howard Foundation and Project Pride of Cross Plains, with assistance from the Robert E. Howard United Press Association, our “theme” is all about Howard History. 2011 marks four unique anniversaries upon which will will devote our festivities. Cross Plains, Texas is already celebrating it’s 100th anniversary as an incorporated town (you can follow this on Facebook right now), it’s the 75th year of honoring the Legacy of REH, it’s the 50th anniversary of Glenn Lord’s benchmark Howard publication, The Howard Collector, and it’s the 25th anniversary of the very first Robert E. Howard Days.

Keeping that history angle in mind, we’ve chosen two Legendary REH publishers to be our Co-Guests of Honor this year: Damon Sasser and Dennis McHaney. Those of you familiar with Howard Fandom will of course recognize Damon and Dennis and we’re happy to have them at Howard Days to talk and be available to their legions of fans. Damon is the publisher of REH: Two-Gun Raconteur (“The definitive Howard Fanzine”) and runs the REH: TGR blog, and Dennis’ The Howard Review is his ultimate claim to fame (among others) in a nearly 40 year career as as a REH publisher. Dennis also runs the biggest REH message board at rehinnercircle.com.

There’s lots more info to come here on the REHupa site, plus there’ll be info at the REH Foundation site, Damon’s TGR blog and Conan.com. We’re in the process of setting up the scheduling for Howard Days, plus there’ll be some truly fantastic events happening if everything falls into place this year. All of the familiar fan-friendly events are still happening: House & Town tours, Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Postal Cancellation, Saturday BBQ plus a plethora of interesting panels & hopefully some special events.

Ok, if that’s not enough enticement, keep your radio dial tuned here for updates and more detailed information. In the meantime, shouldn’t you be making your plans to get to Howard Days this year? We’ll be looking for you! Y’all come!

The Shadow Mystic ID Coin - Now available!

It's time again to honor the tradition of old-time premiums for only a box-top and a dime! (Except the price has gone up.) We offer you The Shadow's special Mystic Coin, and what's even better, there's no box-top required!

In the old days, a mail-away premium like this would have cost you a dime and a boxtop. Adjusted for inflation, a dime in 1940 would be worth $1.57 in 2011. But you can get this sensational ID Coin for only $0.50 in today's cash. So actually, you're saving over a buck and you don't even have to send in a boxtop. How great is that!

(That same dime in 1940 would get you entry to a movie -- a double feature with newsreel, cartoon and several short subjects. Today, admission to a single feature costs close to $10. So this Mystic Shadow ID Coin is a bargain, indeed!)

Ordering instructions:
Inside the US: To order your very own Shadow Coin, enclose fifty cents (US) for each coin (limit 2) along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope (standard business size, please) to:

John Olsen
20512 SW Roy Rogers Rd. #217

USA

Outside the US: To order your very own Shadow Coin, enclose fifty cents (US) for each coin (limit 2) along with a self-addressed envelope and an international reply coupon, available from your post office, to the above address.

Please note that this is a limited edition, numbered coin. Only 1,000 have been made. Once they're gone, there will be no more.
Requests for specific numbers cannot be honored, unfortunately. Earlier orders will receive lower numbers.
Sorry, no PayPal or stamps. US cash or check, only.
(Limit two (2) Mystic Shadow Coins per household, please. Supplies are limited, and I want as many Shadow fans as possible to have one. Offer good while supplies last or until March 1, 2011.)

Zorro - DVD Release of the 1990 Duncan Regehr Series - January 25th!
All 88 Episodes of the Fan-Favorite Series - Not Seen Since Their Family Channel
Airing in the Early '90s - Finally Arrive in an Extras-Laden Collection
Featuring The Original, Swashbuckling Douglas Fairbanks Film,
The Mark of Zorro, Chapter 1 of the 1939 Theatrical Serial,
Zorro's Fighting Legion, Never-Before-Seen Footage
From the TV Series and Much, Much More!

"Out of the night a hero must rise with courage that even a mask can't disguise!" So begins the celebrated adventures of Zorro: swordsman, scientist and relentless defender of the oppressed. Beginning in 1919, with the publication of Johnston McCulley's story, "The Curse of Capistrano", the legend of Zorro was further cemented a year later when Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford produced The Mark of Zorro - with Fairbanks as the title character - as the inaugural film for United Artists. Since then, the swashbuckling hero has inspired more than 40 films and nearly a dozen TV series - one of which has been eagerly awaited by legions of fans for years. And, this January, the wait ends as A&E Home Entertainment unleashes ZORRO: THE COMPLETE SERIES in a heroic collector's set!

Filmed entirely in Madrid, Spain, ZORRO aired on The Family Channel for four seasons, from 1990-1993, and, for the very first time, this spectacular DVD MegaSet™ collects all 88 episodes from the classic '90s series that brought Zorro to life for a whole new generation of fans. The legend of Zorro begins in the early 1800's, when Los Angeles was a dusty pueblo, the farthest colonial outpost of the Spanish empire. This wild and untamed land was governed by the Alcalde, a corrupt mayor whose word was law and whose law was absolute. Young and dashing Don Diego de la Vega (Duncan Regehr, Monster Squad), pretending to care only for science and study, secretly creates a bold alter-ego: Zorro - the Fox. And aided by his mute servant Felipe, inspired by the faith of the beautiful tavern-keeper Victoria, and carried into battle by the mighty steed Toronado, the masked crusader thwarts the Alcalde's plots at every turn. With his trademark whip and sword, he is everywhere and nowhere, quick to defend the innocent and attack the guilty. And he always leaves his trademark symbol 'Z,' - the mark of Zorro!

Renowned for swashbuckling, edge-of-your-seat adventure as well as its top-notch cast, ZORRO featured Regehr and Emmy winner Henry Darrow ("The High Chapparal", "Santa Barbara") as Zorro's father, Don Alejandro de la Vega, as well as guest stars such as Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace) , Pete Postlethwaite (Amistad, The Usual Suspects), Doug McClure (The Land That Time Forgot), Adam West ("Batman"), Warwick Davis (Willow), Andre the Giant, Philip Michael Thomas ("Miami Vice"), Jesse Ventura and many more!

Aside from the 88 remastered episodes on 14 DVDs, ZORRO: THE COMPLETE SERIES also features an exclusive bonus disc presenting some of the masked defender's most influential appearances as well as rare behind-the-scenes material from the 1990 series. Included is "The Mark of Zorro" starring Douglas Fairbanks - the original, full-length silent film that defined the "swashbuckler" genre; Chapter 1 of the 1939 theatrical serial, Zorro's Fighting Legion; trailers for the serials Zorro's Fighting Legion, Zorro's Black Whip and Zorro Rides Again; the original, never-before-released pilot for the "New World Zorro" and a photo gallery from "New World Zorro".

Day-and-date, A&E will also release the four seasons of ZORRO individually. ZORRO: THE COMPLETE SEASONS 1-3 are each comprised of 4 collector's discs and are priced at $29.95 sRP. THE COMPLETE SEASON FOUR, which wraps up the series, includes 2 DVDs and is priced at $19.95 SRP.

Don't miss out on this fan favorite TV classic in which villains always learn that crime doesn't pay and that the people of Los Angeles can always count on "one who's larger than life and defender of all. He's the one who strikes back for the poor and oppressed. A hero...whose name is Zorro!"

H. Bedford-Jones' THE SHADOW
Before "The Shadow" by Walter Gibson appeared in 1931, there was another Shadow.  This one from the typewriter of the pulp veteran H. Bedford-Jones.  Appearing in an issue of PEOPLE'S in 1922, this Shadow was mostly lost in obscurity as those original issues of PEOPLE'S faded into dust.  A hardback version published by Street & Smith came out several years later, this Shadow was eclipsed by his more famous "brother" in 1931.

The Adventures of Doc Savage - Another New Podcast was posted!
In 1985, writer Will Murray joined with producer/director Roger Rittner to create a new series for National Public Radio. Based on the novels of pulp fiction author Lester Dent, "The Adventures of Doc Savage" brought two tales of the Man of Bronze and his Fabulous Five to modern day listeners with a sparkle and drive that combined the best elements of pulp fiction, Saturday matinee cliffhangers, golden age radio production techniques, and modern technology to create a series which, today, pulp fiction fans praise as a worthy and respectful addition to the Doc Savage canon.

To celebrate the end of the original recording sessions, a party was thrown for the cast and crew who had worked to create this enduring classic. At the time, Will Murray was writing an article on the radio series for a well-known fan magazine - and, to accent his prose, he spent some time tape recording interviews with the principal actors who played Doc, Pat Savage, and other characters from the novels. Though these tapes were only intended as a writing aid, Will Murray kept them safely stored away - and now, twenty-five years later, he's graciously sharing them with Roger Rittner and Radio Archives. The result is a series of fascinating podcasts that provide a unique behind the scenes glimpse of a pulp classic in the making.

Six podcasts have been released so far, and the latest posting features an interview with Roger Rittner about the challenges he faced in bringing Doc and the Fabulous Five into a whole new medium. To hear all four of these fascinating audio presentations, as well as other related podcasts, just click on the Doc Savage link on our home page.

Priced at just $24.98, "The Adventures of Doc Savage" is sure to please and delight any pulp fiction or classic radio fan. It's also the perfect gift for anyone who loves action, suspense, or high adventure - and it's now available from RadioArchives.com!

Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed as a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon

EGRETS AND OTHER STORIES by Perley Poore Sheehan

Beb Books announces the release of a new collection of stories by Perley Poore Sheehan, EGRETS AND OTHER STORIES. Perley Poore Sheehan was a big fan of the Florida Everglades and the Seminole Indians who lived there. Besides writing letters urging protection of the great swamp, he wrote three vivid and wonderfully mystical stories about the Everglades.

"Egrets"
Poachers threaten the last remaining Egret colony in Florida and the warden hired to protect them.

"The Lone Seminole"
Germans invade the Everglades in radioing shipping information to waiting submarines.

"The One Gift"
Perhaps the best know of these three stories, Blue Otter, a young shaman, rescues a white woman, nurses her back to healths and finds he has fallen in love with her. A love forbidden by the laws of his people. A rescue party finally arrives in an seaplane, but there isn't enough open water for the plane to take off again. So when kidnappers close in on the girl, Blue Otter decides to call the one gift that the Great Spirit promises to all Seminoles.

Throughout these stories is Sheehan's luminous, lyrical depiction of the Everglades, it's changing moods and vast diversity. Here are three stories you won't forget!  $5.00.

Each story is reprinted on 8.5 x 11 paper in easy-to-read type, side-stapled, with color cover.

From within, the Norman conquerors who now rule the island face unrest from their Muslim subjects. From without, the Germans, the French, the English, the Byzantines and the Berbers of Africa all covet mastery of the strategically placed isle.

The Green Hornet - New feature film debuts January 14th!
The new Green Hornet film is directed by Michel Gondry and stars Seth Rogen, who co-wrote the screenplay with Evan Goldberg. Supporting actors include Jay Chou as Kato, Christoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz, Edward Furlong, Edward James Olmos, David Harbour, and Tom Wilkinson.

Reviews have been mixed, but mostly on the negative side. Critics say that The Green Hornet doesn't quite succeed as a superhero flick or as a subversive send-up of the genre. The pundits say The Green Hornet has moments of inspiration, and that Chou is excellent, but that Gondry's typical good humor is mostly missing here, resulting in a strange mix of wisecracking and ultra-violence that never quite gels.

The Green Hornet: Fog in the Night - Now available!
A man, frustrated with the casual corruption in the world around him, takes the law into his own hands. Britt Reid, a millionaire-playboy turned crusading newspaperman, operates as a masked vigilante by night.
The wartime era represented in this set, a definitive period for the series, finds The Green Hornet fighting against Nazi saboteurs, fifth columnists, and black marketers. These foes are often working in league with his more traditional enemies: predatory businessmen, conniving mobsters, and treasury-rifling politicians.

Nineteen of these twenty exciting episodes have never before been available to the public. Heard for the first time since their original broadcast, you now have an opportunity to listen to these thrilling "lost" adventures of The Green Hornet!

Includes a Program Guide by Elizabeth McLeod.

Duration: 10 hours
Media: (10) CDs

James Bond - New feature film to premiere November 9, 2012!
Bond is back. Daniel Craig is signed on to portray the legendary James Bond in the franchise's 23rd installment, which will premiere on November 9, 2012. MGM has not yet announced a distribution partner for the film, but it is set to go into production later this year.

Paramount Pictures has informally gotten a first crack at the negotiation for distribution partner. The other contender is Sony Pictures, which successfully released the last two Bond films and is said to be on good terms with the Broccoli family, owner of the Bond rights. Despite that, a knowledgeable source says the Broccolis have approved Paramount as a prospective distributor and that preliminary talks have begun.

2012 sees the centennial anniversary of the publication of Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Four podcasts have been released so far, the latest one featuring an interview with Kimit Muston, the actor behind the character of Johnny Littlejohn, the archaeological member of Doc Savage's team of experts.

THE SUPERHUMANS by Han Ryner, adapted by Brian Stableford
Han Ryner (1861-1938) was a French anarchist, a philosopher and a startlingly original science fiction writer in pre-Wellsian, French scientific romance; he was once voted the Prince of Storytellers by a popular magazine.

In The Superhumans (1929), Ryner tells stories of the Time of the Mad Sun, a second sun which lights the Earth in the far future, when a race of giant and super-intelligent Mastodons has arisen to rule the Earth and enslave Mankind… He entertains us with the Travels of Psychodorus, the Cynic Philosopher (1903), who, like Gulliver, encounters Eyeless Men, Retrograde People and many others strange subcultures… In 1896, he foresaw the revolt of sentient machines (1896), imagined the crimes of a solitary sociopath in the enlightened year 2347 and the creation of hybrid man-apes.

Featuring: Dan Turner
There was only one man on the set who could have shot the arrow, yet Dan hated to think Jeff could be guilty. Motive tumbles over motive, and suspect waltzes around with suspect - but there still remains the question: Where did the arrow come from?

Margot Stevenson, 98 (1912 - 2011), Inspired and voiced "the lovely Margot Lane"
Margot Stevenson, the veteran Broadway and Warner Bros. actress who voiced "the lovely  Margot Lane" opposite Orson Welles in the 1938 Goodrich summer season, has died five weeks before what would have been her 99th birthday. Margot was one of the last surviving cast members of the classic Warner Bros. crime films of the early 1940s. She was also a frequent guest at the annual Friends of Old-Time Radio Convention, where she delivered a final performance in 2005, 73 years after her 1932 Broadway debut.

encompasses over 750 pages and includes more than 5,900 illustrations.

Features of Book Two:
  • Longer, and extensively illustrated, entries on every cliffhanger of the sound period, including the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, and Superman duos, the Flash Gordon trio, the Dick Tracy quartet, and the classic Adventures of Captain Marvel, Drums of FuManchu, Spy Smasher — 232 in all.
  • Also covered individually are lesser known, but quite entertaining, adventures that brought kids to the theaters each Saturday. And, of course, there is the parade of Westerns with Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Wild Bill Elliott, and others. The Movie Serial Companion: Book One - Recommended!
THE MOVIE SERIAL COMPANION Book One is the first of two books about the classic cliffhangers that thrilled the multitudes during the first half of the 20th century. The book starts off with afive-chapter history of America’s film serials that runs for 62 pages and covers both the silent and the sound film eras. The text is easily read, engaging, informative, and insightful. My interest never flagged and I learned many things that I was not previously aware of. For instance, I did not know that most serials had two directors, one shooting while the other prepared the next days work, or one doing location scenes while the other did interiors. Following the beginning chapters of the book is a 225 page annotated listing of the American serials of the silent era. The listing is done alphabetically by serial title. Most of the serials merit at least a full page which includes the date of the serial, the studio, the director(s), a listing of the players, a listing of the chapter titles, a synopsis of the story, and a brief commentary. Each listing is accompanied with numerous stills of scenes from the serial and of the players. Some of the entries also include the one-sheet advertising for the film or magazine covers featuring the serial or its players. Each serial entry averages at least 3-to-4 illustrations. Illustrations are in black and white and full color throughout. All-in-all, this book is obviously a labor of love and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to the publication of the second book in the series.

HOBO STORIES By Patrick & Terence Casey
6x9-inch perfect bound; 332 pages, $20.00 postpaid
Introduction by John Locke

Hobos spoke their own language, lived by their own code. Veterans of the road enslaved younger runaways, to use them as servants, to dispatch their innocent faces to back doors to beg. True hobos scorned brethren who accepted work instead of handouts. To do nothing, to pay nothing, was the hobo dream, the true measure of freedom, the true test of authenticity.

Patrick and Terence Casey wrote five stories set in Hoboland--that is, the backroads, railyards, and seedy hobo jungles of America where tramps traveled and congregated. The initial story appeared in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST (1914), the remainder in the leading pulp ADVENTURE (1916-21). Together, they constitute a grand saga of life in a strange, often violent underworld of yesteryear. HOBO STORIES collects the series.

The amazing Caseys . . . they were two brothers from San Francisco who sold regularly to the pulps as teenagers. Soon thereafter, they conned their way into the prestigious pages of ADVENTURE with tales of actual jungles--in Borneo and Central America. Included in HOBO STORIES is a biography of the Caseys, an examination of the roots of their hobo fiction, and, from the pulp ROMANCE (1920), their revelatory short story about the adventures of a teenage pulp writer.

The Serial Squadron: DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST
Begins shipping in late January!
