Annual Fantastic Pulps Show & Sale - April 30, 2005 The 9th Annual Fantastic Pulps Show & Sale will be held Saturday, April 30, 2005 from 10am to 5pm. The location as always, is the lower level of the Lillian H. Smith branch of the Toronto Public Library, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The show is a small but pulp specific event of 25 tables, featuring pulps, pulp reprints and related items, as well as video and a scattering of other collectables. The show is a friendly event, and the city of Toronto has many attractions to offer for a vacation/pulp outing. There is a slide show, auction, and periodic tours of the library's own pulp collection. The library is located in the heart of Toronto at 239 College Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. For more

While he wrote in the SF genre only sparingly, Smith's poetic vision resulted in stirring picturesque tales of interplanetary travel. Among Smith's best work are such tales as "The Vaults of Yoh-Vombis", "Dweller in the Gulf" and "The Plutonian Drug". Sadly, not only are many of his SF tales unavailable in hardcover, some have never been presented in the author's preferred texts! OF THE WORLDS 2005 may be seeing two versions of WAR OF THE WORLDS. The first one will (hopefully) be out on March 30, by Pendragon films, directed by Timothy Hines. This version will be quite faithful to Wells' original novel, even to the point that it will be set in the 19th century. The pictures I've seen of the Martian war machines look very promising. The trailers, with the completed FX may be in the theaters in late February and early March. Latest rumor is that the DVD will be out on June 15, just a couple of weeks before the other version hits the theater. The film is being directed by Steven Spielberg and will star Tom Cruise. HOTEL INFO: We're moving to a new hotel, with larger exhibit space. Advantages of the new hotel include being only minutes from O'Hare airport (the hotel operates a free shuttle service which runs approximately every 20 minutes - and from the east, you can now circle around the city, rather than go through; from other directions you don't have to go through the city). The room rates at the new Hotel are $92/night plus tax (which is the same as the rate at our old hotel). The hotel rooms were newly remodeled at the end of last year. One car per room parks free of charge; otherwise there's a parking charge of $5.50 for less than 7 hours, $9 for 7-24 hours. | The 8th Voyage of Sinbad Keanu Reeves is in talks to play Sinbad, in a new film from "xXx" director Rob Cohen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Neal Moritz will produce the film, called "The 8th Voyage of Sinbad", which is set up to sail at Columbia. The movie, planned for years apparently, follows the continuing adventures of Sinbad and his crew, who are marooned off the coast of China in the 8th century. Once ashore, they embark on a quest for the Lamp of Aladdin, teaming up with an empress to battle fantastical creatures and a rebellious Chinese general. | |

The hero of their story is American G.I. and ace fighter pilot "Jack Shepherd", a bit of a rookie to the spy game, who's not the suave, perfect "James Bond" type. Untested and a bit naive, his patriotism is the main motivator that drives him. And, while the story and characters are completely fictional, there is one member of the cast who's very much a real person: Albert Einstein, who serves as Jack's mentor and creates all manner of bizarre gadgets for the newly-minted superspy. "He's right at the heart of this comic series, ultimately becoming a kind of father figure to Jack," continues Cosby. "I mean, here's this pacifist who inadvertently helped to create the most destructive device known to man. That makes for great internal conflict and drama.
