BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #11 - Now available!
BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #11 (Summer 2005) presents a variety of articles and features related to science fiction and its early years. Jules Verne’s Mysterious Island and his other “Robinsonades” are examined in a lengthy, insightful essay by Brian Taves, co-author of The Jules Verne Encyclopedia. In a well-researched article, film historian Steve Joyce takes a look at the 1919 First Men in the Moon, the first film adapted from a story by H.G. Wells. Mark Trost weighs in with a humorous piece on Zarnak, the short-lived comic-strip feature that appeared in early issues of THRILLING WONDER STORIES; more interesting than the strip is the controversy it generated, and Mark quotes liberally from derisive letters fired off to TWS by prominent SF fans and soon-to-be pros. Joe Rainone has compiled a small portfolio of science-fiction images from story papers of the late 19th century, and readers might be surprised by the SF concepts visualized in these now-rare periodicals as early as 1876. Reprinted from a 1930 issue of Author & Journalist is an article by R. Jere Black offering suggestions to writers hoping to break into science-fiction pulps. Finally, BnT kicks off a new department, “Convention Corner,” by printing some photos taken at this year’s Pulpcon and plugging upcoming events of interest to collectors of pulps and paperbacks.

Copies are available from Ed Hulse at $6.00 plus $1.50 for postage.
Please make checks payable to him and send to 2467 Rt 10 East, Bldg 15, Apt 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.

Tales Out Of Dunwich, Edited by Robert M. Price
This anthology, edited by Robert M. Price, is set in and around H. P. Lovecraft's fictional locale. The contributors are Jack Williamson, Stanley C. Sargent, Brian McNaughton, Richard A. Lupoff, Don D'Ammassa, Nancy A. Collins, Gerard E. Giannattasio, Eddy C. Bertin, and Price himself.  $20.00

The Pleasures of a Futuroscope, By Lord Dunsany, Edited by S. T. Joshi (Trade paperback edition)
Lord Dunsany, Irish master of fantasy, was the author of more than a dozen novels, hundreds of short stories, poems, and essays, and dozens of plays. And yet, his last major work, The Pleasures of a Futuroscope, has remained unpublished until this edition.

In this powerful and moving novel, written in 1955, a futuroscope--a device that allows a viewer to see into the near or distant future--reveals an awful fate for humanity: a nuclear holocaust has destroyed nearly all human life on the planet. The great city of London is now merely an immense crater, filled in with water from the Thames. The pitiful remnants of humanity have been reduced to a Stone Age existence.

The narrator, obsessively looking through the futuroscope, focuses upon the plight of a single family in their struggles to survive and fend off the many enemies, both animal and human, that surround them. When one of their number is kidnapped by a band of gypsies, we can only wonder at her fate in this brave new world of the distant future.

Gripping, horrifying, touching, and fascinating, The Pleasures of a Futuroscope shows that Lord Dunsany had retained his literary powers undiminished to the end of his life.  $15.00

HOUSE OF CTHULHU: TALES OF THE PRIMAL LAND Volume 1 - Now available!
by Brian Lumley
The House of Cthulhu introduces the weird and wonderful world of Theem'hdra, an island continent of wonders and terrors, where brave men die terrifying deaths, awe-inspiring sorcerers hurl powerful magic at each other, and monsters abound. This is classic Lovecraftian horror from one of the masters of the form, British Fantasy Award-winner Brian Lumley.

The volcanic eruption that created the island of Surtsey in 1967 also revealed a long hidden cache of documents that told the fantastic history of Theem'hdra as written by the sorcerer Teh Atht. Building on translations begun by the scholar Thelred Gustau-who vanished under mysterious, some say magical, circumstances-Brian Lumley brings the saga of the Primal Land to readers of today.

Here, the wizard Mylarkhrion-most powerful of the terrible magicians who walked the earth in those long-ago days-battles sorcerers jealous of his knowledge, power, and wealth. His own apprentice, thinking he knows all of his master's secrets, challenges him-but Mylarkhrion has one final trick up his sleeve . . . . When the assassin Humbuss Ank, who specializes in killing wizards, makes Mylarkhrion his target, he avoids or destroys nearly all of the sorcerer's traps, forcing Mylarkhrion to a final, desperate gamble for survival. But even Mylarkhrion has a weakness, a lust for power that drives him to summon the Great One, Cthulhu, and so call doom upon himself!

The fabled riches of the House of Cthulhu draw thieves and warriors from throughout the civilized-and uncivilized lands, but none escape with so much as a single gemstone, for they discover that Cthulhu's House is not a temple but a dwelling-place. Surely the Elder God lives there still, waiting for an unwary person to open the portal between his world and ours . . . .

POLAR SHIFT - In book stores on August 30th!
Polar shift: It is the name for a phenomenon that may have occurred many times in the past. At the very least, it disorients birds and animals and damages electrical equipment. At its worst, it causes massive eruptions, earthquakes, and climatic changes. At its very worst, it would mean the obliteration of all living matter, and if that happens-exit Earth.

Sixty years ago, an eccentric Hungarian genius discovered how to artificially trigger such a shift, but then his work was lost, or so it was thought. Now, the charismatic leader of an anti-globalization group plans to use the work to give the world's industrialized nations a small jolt, then reverse the shift back again. The only problem is, it cannot be reversed. Once the shift starts, there is nothing anyone can do about it.

Austin, Zavala, and the rest of the NUMA Special Assignments Team certainly have faced dire situations before, but never have they encountered anything like this. This time . . . even they may be too late.

WALTER B. GIBSON AND THE SHADOW by Thomas J. Shimeld - Now available!
Foreword by Robert W. Gibson
Hardcover edition published in 2003.  Softcover edition now available.

“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? . . . The Shadow knows!” And who knew The Shadow better than his creator, Walter B. Gibson. Relatively few people have heard of Gibson, but many more are familiar with The Shadow having heard the program on the Blue Coal Radio Program in the 1930s and read the Street & Smith Shadow novels.

Walter B. Gibson’s life and career come out from behind The Shadow in this biography. It covers his youth in Philadelphia, his development as a writer and magician, his wives, including the third, (Litzka, who was a harpist and magician in her own right), his time living in Maine and upstate New York, and his later years and death.

In addition to being credited with creating The Shadow (he used the pseudonym Maxwell Grant), Gibson wrote 187 books, contributed 668 articles to periodicals, created 283 stories for The Shadow Magazine, wrote 48 separate syndicated feature columns, reported the adventures of The Shadow and Blackstone the magician in 394 comic books and newspaper strips, and helped develop 147 radio scripts and many other works under numerous pseudonyms. Gibson has invented many widely used magic tricks and traveled with and befriended Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston, Harry Blackstone, Sr., and Joseph Dunninger.

Hardcover (ISBN: 1-59224-233-2), $35.00
Trade paperback (ISBN: 1-59224-237-5), $19.95

Achmed Abdullah's name was once synonymous with adventure. He published dozens of novels and hundreds of short stories in the pulp
magazines of the early 20th century, thrilling millions of readers throughout the world. He wrote with authority about exotic peoples and places because he had lived a life filled with adventure, serving in the British army and travelling extensively to exotic locales before settling down to a literary career. Here is the first new book of Adbullah's stories in almost seventy years, sampling a broad range of his work. "A Charmed Life" tells of one life-changing night in India, when a white man glimpses and beautiful woman in danger and acts to rescue her. "Framed at the Benefactor's Club" is a fascinating, intricately plotted mystery set in Manhattan. "The Yellow Wife" is a chilling look at Chinese life in Chinatown. "Bismallah!" is a light adventure in Africa, as crooked traders try to put a successful rival company out of business. "Light" is a surprisingly effective supernatural tale. "A Yarkand Survey" tells the story of a corrupt governor who is sent on a survey mission that might cost him his life -- if he isn't careful! And "Fear" is the tale of two thieving white men in Africa and the weird fates that awaited them. Ranging from mystery to adventure to outright horror, from the streets of New York to the rooftops of Calcutta, from London's Chinatown to the jungles of Africa, here are tales of men caught up by plots and mysteries beyond their wildest imaginings! Features a new introduction by pulp scholar Darrell Schweitzer.

P. Craig Russell, the artist best known for adapting literary works to comics, applies his legendary talents to Conan in this adaptation of Robert E. Howard's "The Jewels of Gwahlur," one of Conan's last adventures before becoming king.

A young woman, having made a string of bad choices, finds herself the pawn of mercenaries-one of which is Conan of Cimmeria. As the former dancing girl poses as the dead oracle of a primitive cult, Conan puts his experience as a thief and a soldier together in pursuit of some of the most prized jewels in the world-the Teeth of Gwahlur!

Featuring a sixteen-page sketchbook and an interview with Russell covering his career and creative process on this book, this handsome hardcover not only highlights one of fantasy art's greatest living talents, it shows once again that Howard's original Conan tales remain unsurpassed.

The Midnight Hour: Saint Lawn Hill and Other Tales - Now available for pre-order!
By James Chambers and Jason Whitley

In the world of The Midnight Hour, the supernatural is real—and more bizarre than you’ve ever imagined. Forget everything you think you know about demons, ghosts, haunted houses, witches, and vampires, and get ready to enjoy these surprising and off-beat new stories.

Combining horror, adventure, and a touch of humor,
THE MIDNIGHT HOUR chronicles the adventures of Madeline Night and her team of occult investigators who specialize in debunking paranormal frauds and documenting true cases of otherworldly menace on their weekly radio program, The Midnight Hour, on WHPL radio.

Co-creators Chambers and Whitley—inspired in part by the desire to create something for their young daughters to read when they grow up—have achieved an unusually high level of collaboration for a writer and artist in crafting this series of suspenseful stories and haunting images. Each tale may be read on its own, but taken together they tell an ongoing story in a format akin to the book version of a DVD collection of a complete season of a television series.

Trade Paperback, Length: 266 pages, Retail price: $14.95
THE MIDNIGHT HOUR can be pre-ordered from Shocklines.

2006 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006
The Windy City website (http://www.windycitypulpandpaper.com) has been updated to add initial info on next year's show.  Please note that the hotel and the date have changed from what folks were told at the last con this past April.  The change is due to the Ramada O'Hare informing Windy City Con in late June that they were going to be tearing down their meeting room space.  Luckily, a replacement hotel in the area was available, although it did not have the desired weekend available.  As a result, the show has shifted about 400 yards north to the Wyndham O'Hare and the date has changed to May 5-7.  This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, so if anyone has any original Shadow art they'd be willing to make available for display in the art room, they should drop Windy City Con a line.

ARTS UNKNOWN: THE LIFE AND ART OF LEE BROWN COYE - Still available!
ARTS UNKNOWN: THE LIFE AND ART OF LEE BROWN COYE by Luis Ortiz is still available!
Price: $39.95; 176 pages; Hardcover
ISBN: 1-933065-04-4

The first bio and art retrospective of one of the defining pulp artists of the 20th century

Lee Brown Coye was one of art's "almost men"--not a loser, but never quite a winner. Bad luck haunted much of his career. He began his life as an artist on the eve of the Great Depression and was forced to labor as a malcontented advertising agency art director through much of the 1930s. Coye was ready to make a breakthrough when he began to appear in the Whitney Museum's annual exhibitions and had a watercolor brought by the Metropolitan Museum for its permanent collection--then Pearl Harbor was attacked.

The arrival of abstractionists fleeing war-torn Europe forced American artists working in a realistic style, like Coye, to the periphery of the art world. While Coye dabbled in abstract paintings, and later worked as a medical artist and cartoonist, he always considered himself primary an illustrator. In periodicals such as WEIRD TALES and AMAZING STORIES, Coye's uniquely macabre and original art found the perfect home. Illustrating horror stories matched Coye's anatomy lessons with his macabre sensibilities. At this time his studios were gothic abodes filled with skeletons, dead animals, live rats, and human body parts from a medical college - all models for his art. Some of his best work was done for pulp magazines and Arkham House works by H.P. Lovecraft.

In author Luis Ortiz' words, "Coye was an art machine and an American Original. As a child he was considered a 'holy
terror'. As an adult, after a hard day of doing medical illustrations, he thought nothing of walking into a bar carrying a decapitated human head under his arm, placing it on the counter and buying his guillotined 'friend' a drink. On another occasion he 'borrowed' the finger-bone of a saint (a holy relic he was building a reliquary for) from the Catholic Church in his hometown of Syracuse, New York. The Syracuse diocese was beside itself and had to send clergy to perform a blessing on Coye's studio since the relic could only travel to holy places."

Ortiz adds, "Coye's horror illustrations are not like anything done before-or since. You would have to go back to Goya's black paintings to find anything comparable. Yet despite the darkness, Coye's art was always filled with traces of humor."

Parts of The Blair Witch Project film may have been based on a true life incident that occurred to Coye as a young man when he discovered a strange, isolated farmhouse in the backwoods of upstate New York. The house was surrounded by bizarre constructs of lashed-together sticks and had an unusual tenant. The unexplained display seemed to allude to some dark nature, and stayed with Coye the rest of his life. Later on, sticks would become a recurring motif in his illustrations. Horror writer Karl Wagner transmogrified the incident into an award winning story, "Sticks", which may have influenced the makers of Blair Witch.

ARTS UNKNOWN; THE LIFE AND ART OF LEE BROWN COYE weaves together biography, the mid 20th-century fractured schools of American fine art and commercial arts, and New York history, as well as offering fascinating insights into a one-of-a-kind artist. The author has interviewed many of Coye's relatives and friends, and was allowed complete access to the artist's personal archives, including diaries and letters. As the first book on the Coye, ARTS UNKNOWN is significant in bringing to light this extraordinary, eccentric man and his art.

Featuring over 350 pieces of art by Coye, including many never before published.

Ron Fortier has revived the pulp hero CAPTAIN HAZZARD and is bringing him back for the fans to enjoy. He has completely rewritten the one and only CAPTAIN HAZZARD pulp story, PYTHON MEN OF LOST CITY, and it will soon be available from Wild Cat Books.

Then what will follow is a brand new series of Captain Hazzard adventures by Ron and veteran comic-scribe, Martin Powell. At the same time, Chris Mills and Ron have a three part comic mini-series based on PYTHON MEN and are presently looking for an art team to illustrate the story.

The idea is to bring back the character two-fold, both in pulps where he was sired, and in comics, in all new stories.

Clive Cussler  - SAHARA sequel?
Breck Eisner, director of "Sahara" says that he's confident they'll all be doing a sequel.
"Well, yes, we sure hope to be doing one and I think a lot of that depends on actually how we do on DVD", he says. "You know, we've done well box office and we want to continue to do well on DVD. And if all things do go well, because it's an expensive movie, then we will do another one. There are 18 books so we have a lot of source material to pull from".

So which Cussler novel will the next one be based upon?
"I know they have two or three of the books under contract. But I'm not supposed to tell anyone which ones they are yet, sadly." Eisner says the entire cast is contracted - Matthew McConaughey, Steve Zahn, Bill Macy, and Rainn Wilson - to come back, and he's putting his hand up to return to the director's chair.

Will the sequel, currently being penned, be the next thing he directs?
"It depends on the timing. I'm taking another movie fairly soon while we finish developing this movie. Hopefully the plan will be I do another movie while we continue writing and developing and scouting this, and I go into the next Sahara after that."

THE ILLUSTRATORS - Coming in September/October!
The Illustrators is a 14 part series exploring the history of American Illustrators, beginning with the late 1800s through the present day. Though artists such as Norman Rockwell and N.C. Wyeth most commonly come to mind with the public, there exists an unknown history of illustrators that hasn't been explored in the documentary format. The series will present a detailed chronicle of illustrators and their work. Each program will showcase either a particular illustrator or genre of illustration, featuring interviews with several illustrators and historians. Drawing and painting techniques, design, composition, and color will be demonstrated by many of the artists in the series.

Director Paul Jilbert has compiled a collection of interviews with the following artists: Robert McGinnis, James Bama, Howard Terpning, James Avati, Syd Mead, Josh Agle (SHAG), Don Crowley, Bob Kuhn, Dick Bryers, Jim Silke, Dave Stevens, Glen Orbik, James Gurney, Dave Dorman, and others.

You can view preview clips from the upcoming programs. DVD's will be available starting in September 2005 with the release of Robert McGinnis: PAINTING THE LAST ROSE OF SUMMER. This will be followed in October 2005 by JAMES BAMA: AMERICAN REALIST.

Indiana Jones 4 - Coming in 2007!
According to TheIndyExperience.com, Steven Spielberg, Harrison Ford, and George Lucas have all given the thumbs up to the latest "Indiana Jones 4" script, and it's go-go for launch. Apparently Spielberg's clearing his schedule after "Munich" for the sequel.  Lucas and writer Jeff Nathanson are currently tweaking the script, hoping it should be finished by the fall to be submitted for greenlight.

February 2nd, 2007 is the date Paramount plan to release the blockbuster.

KING KONG on DVD - Coming November 22nd!
According to the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, KING KONG Director Peter Jackson is helping produce bonus materials for the DVD debut of the 1933 original. Jackson is working on a new documentary, "RKO Production 601: The Making of Kong, the Eighth Wonder of the World," a two-hour, seven-part feature included in the two-disc "King Kong" set, which Warner Home Video will release on November 22.

One part of the documentary focuses on the mysterious "spider pit" sequence deleted from the film before its theatrical premiere in New York and Los Angeles.  "For years, there has always been speculation, does this footage exist, so we have a piece that actually explains what it was and we do a recreation of it," Feltenstein said. "For fans of the film, that's a big, important thing."

KING KONG, which has never before been available on DVD, will arrive in stores in two configurations: a two-disc special edition and a two-disc collector's edition packaged in a collectable tin and including a 20-page reproduction of the original souvenir program, postcard reproductions of the original one sheets, and a mail-in offer for a reproduction of a vintage 27-by-41-inch movie poster.

Warner also will release a four-disc collector's set featuring the two-disc "King Kong" special edition along with "The Son of Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young."

In addition to the seven-part documentary, the "King Kong" DVD set includes such extras as a documentary on "Kong" director (and creator) Merian C. Cooper, a trailer gallery of Cooper's other films, and a commentary from stop-motion animator Ray Harryhausen, actress Terry Moore ("Mighty Joe Young") and special effects master Ken Ralston ("Star Wars").

POLAR SHIFT - Delayed until August 30th!
POLAR SHIFT has been delayed and will now be released on August 30th!

PULP ADVENTURECON #5 - November 5, 2005!
Bold Venture Press has announced that PULPADVENTURECON #5 is scheduled for Saturday, November 5th.  The show is at the same location as last time -- the Ramada Inn, Bordentown NJ ... just off Exit 7 of the New Jersey Turnpike. BVP has room for 48 tables, and has already sold 24.  BVP just spoke with illustrator EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER on the telephone, and he's accepted our invitation to be our Guest of Honor -- along with illustrator LOUIS GLANZMAN, who claims that he's always wanted to meet fellow artist Kinstler.

EVERETT RAYMOND KINSTLER is a native New Yorker who began his career at age 16, drawing comic books and hundreds of book and magazine illustrations, as well as covers for paper back books. As one of the "golden age" era of comic book artists, his illustrations for magazines, including The Shadow and Doc Savage, have influenced the pop art school.  He studied at the Art Students League, where he later taught from 1969 to 1974. Kinstler ultimately made the transition to portraitist, and soon established himself as one of the nation's foremost portrait painters. For over four decades, Kinstler also has devoted time to painting landscapes and watercolors.  Kinstler's life and artwork are the subjects of two recently published books.

LOUIS GLANZMAN was born in 1922, raised in the farmlands of Virginia, he is a self educated artist. He began his career at the age of sixteen as a comic book illustrator. In the 40's he served as an illustrator on the Air Force magazine for the US Air Forces. During the 50's he illustrated numerous children's books, including the popular 'Pippi Longstocking' series. He is listed in 'Illustrators of Children Books.' Always working as a free-lance illustrator, his paintings have appeared in Readers Digest, True, Argosey, Colliers, Boys Life, New Yorker, National Lampoon, Saturday Evening Post, etc. His career led him for a short sojourn as a court reporter for Life magazine. The covers for Time magazine enhanced his career as a portrait painter, and he is a member of the 'American Portrait Society.'

Check the Bold Venture Press website for more updates as the show approaches.

The Shadow 75th anniversary
Last Sunday was the 75th anniversary of The Shadow's debut as host of STREET & SMITH'S DETECTIVE STORY HOUR on Thursday, July 31, 1930. Though we remember The Shadow best from Walter Gibson's SHADOW MAGAZINE novels and as the invisible crimefighter from the 1937-54 Mutual series, The Shadow originated on CBS as a mysterious host, paving the way for later radio hosts like INNER SANCTUM's Raymond, The Whistler, SUSPENSE's Man in Black and The Mysterious Traveler.  The Shadow was portrayed on CBS-Radio briefly by James LaCurto and for a half-decade by Frank Readick, in a 1935 syndicated serial by Carl Kroenke and in the long-running MBS series by the 22-year-old Orson Welles, Bill Johnstone, John Archer, Steve Courtleigh and finally Bret Morrison.

The success of The Shadow on CBS' DETECTIVE STORY HOUR led to the launching of the long-running pulp magazine the following year, with Walter B. Gibson creating the characters of Lamont Cranston, Inspector Cardona, Commissioner Weston and Moe "Shrevvy" Shrevnitz that would later be featured in the MBS radio revival.  Personally, I plan to commemorate the day by reading one of Walter Gibson's 283 SHADOW novels ... maybe even more than one.

Pulpfans in the Hollywood area might want to attend a special screening of "Trapped" over Labor Day weekend. It's the second of the six Universal two-reelers from 1931-32 that were narrated by The Shadow and adapted directly from the DETECTIVE STORY radio scripts. (The first in the series, "Burglar to the Rescue," was showing in movie theaters while the second issue of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE was still on the newsstands.)  It's being shown at Hollywood's legendary Egyptian Theatre as part of Cinecon's (www.cinecon.org) film program.  I saw "Burglar to the Rescue" at last year's Cinecon, and was delighted to discover that it did indeed feature Frank Readick as the voice of The Shadow.  (It was Readick's sibilant tones and mocking laughter that Walter always described in his pulp novels.)  Nothing is known to survive from the any of the first five years of radio shows (other than Readick's sibilant signatures which opened and closed all of the 1937-38 Welles broadcasts), so these long-lost "filmettes" are probably the closest we're ever going to get to experiencing The Shadow in his original role as sinister radio narrator (which Walter Gibson featured in some of his earliest SHADOW novels).

Anthony Tollin (who years ago in the Orient learned a strange and mysterious secret ...)
