- Rumor! There have been whispers of a "24" movie, featuring Kiefer Sutherland for the last few months. Now the rumors are saying that it could be a done deal. Rumor has it that Kiefer Sutherland has inked a 3 movie deal for a series of '24' movies at Fox. Furthermore, the first one may be going before-the-cameras as early as 2007. Additionally, it is rumored that Bruce Willis has mentioned to Sutherland that he'd be keen to cameo in one. More to follow when available! | |

This means the entire books was rewritten by educators so that it would be accessible to readers of very low literacy levels. This is a wonderful program and I'm thrilled to be a part of it. It might even entail a visit by me to London in March for the launch. But it means the book has been greatly simplified. So, UK readers, please don't buy the book and email me and say, “It was kinda basic…” This is very deliberate. The book is for those people who don't read very much, and indeed, might be intimidated by the density of novels generally. It's funny, when I started writing, I never expected to write short stories. But then invitations came, and from various sources: in 2000, The Sydney Morning Herald asked me to do a four-part serial. The Bulletin magazine in Australia has asked me to contribute to their “Summer Fiction” issue several times. I was even invited to contribute to Girls' Night In 2: Gentlemen by Invitation . And of course, there is HELL ISLAND . And since all of these shorts were only published in Australia (especially HELL ISLAND ), my international fans missed out on reading them. So, as the years have gone by, this little collection has grown. And so, late last year, I discussed with Cate Paterson at Pan Macmillan the possibility of releasing my short stories in a collection in late 2006 (since my next novel won't be released till 2007, it'd be nice to give readers something this year). We're still working out the details, so more news on this as it happens, but I am thinking of doing a couple of new short stories, one featuring Aloysius Knight from Scarecrow , just to spice it up! |  |

- Coming to TV screens! ABC Television has picked up IDT Entertainment’s drama series “Masters of Science Fiction,” featuring works from some of the most well known authors of science fiction, the network announced today. Negotiations are underway to include works from Isaac Asimov (author of “I Robot” and “Nightfall”), Ray Bradbury (“The Martian Chronicles,” “Fahrenheit 451”), Harlan Ellison (“A Boy and His Dog,” “Jeffty is Five”) and Robert Heinlein (“The Puppet Masters,” “Stranger in a Strange Land”). IDT Entertainment, in association with Industry Entertainment, will produce a minimum of four one-hour episodes. "We're very excited about this anthology," says Quinn Taylor, who oversees movies and miniseries for ABC. "We've been trying to put together this kind of series because it has great potential to become appointment television." Oscar-nominated screenwriter Michael Tolkin ("The Player," "Deep Impact") has already agreed to write and direct one episode. Bradbury is in discussions to adapt his "Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed," and the producers are also negotiating for the rights to Asimov's story "The Last Question" and "The Discarded" by Harlan Ellison. | |

August 3-6, 2006 PULPCON 35 will be held August 3-6, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio. Ernest Chiriacka and William Tenn to be Guests of Honor William Tenn was a major figure in science fiction magazines after his first SF story "Alexander the Bait" appeared in the May, 1946 Astounding until he became a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University in 1966. His satirical and ironic stories from the period which have been anthologized dozens of times were collected into two super volumes by NESFA in 2001. They have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Earlier sports, detective and western magazines sometimes had them as written by Kenneth Putnam. Tenn was an editor at Popular Publications and edited one anthology, "Children of Wonder" in 1953. He is now Professor Emeritus at Penn State and, at 87, a rabid football fan. Ernest Chiriacka, who attended Pulpcon last year, had outstanding covers on pulps in several fields. Two of his paintings appeared in an advertisement in the December 2004 issue of Illustration, supporting that magazine and the entire community of illustration fans making it a success. A later issue had a lengthy article about him which featured quite a few of his striking action cover paintings. Hal Steeger of Popular Publications rated him "one of the very best in quality and to work with". Since enjoying Pulpcon 34, Chiriacki has been guest of honor at the Windy City convention and Rich Harvey's shorter and smaller gathering in New Jersey. Pulpcon is introducing a new price structure for memberships, offering full memberships Thursday-Sunday (T-S), Friday-Sunday (F-S) and Saturday-Sunday (S-S). Dealers will be required to purchase T-S memberships. Memberships arriving at the Pulpcon mailbox on or before May 13, 2006 are $20 (T-S) and $10 (S-S). Murray Graydon African stories needed for reprint project Georges Dodds is currently editing (for Battered Silicon Dispatch Box) an anthology of thematic precursors to "Tarzan of the Apes" and putative research material Edgar Rice Burroughs might have used in doing preparatory research for "Tarzan of the Apes"; it is tentatively entitled "The Incunabular Ape-Man Writings". In doing so I have and will be digitizing the text of a number of works (>30 novels and works of non-fiction + 15-20 short stories), some from pulps and dime novels, in English, French, Spanish and German (the latter three translated to English). A complete list of the anthology's contents (as it currently stands in its evolution) is available upon request. There are some works in early pulps I have not been able to acquire copies of, and at this point the library at the university where I work is getting a bit doubtful that pre=WW1 pulp magazines have much to do with the field of agricultural engineering. A friend of mine who works at the LOC has tried unsuccessfully to get copies of some texts for me (shoddy equipment maintenance prevent him, on several occasions, from copying more that a couple of pages). The Univ. of Minnesota, for whom I've digitized a few dime novels (see above)are supposed to have original copies of "The Argosy" -- but can't find them (doh!). One collector I know has some but hasn't the time to make me copies. So here goes my current request list. I would cover any costs of photocopying or scanning the material. I've included some other works, some in French, some not published in pulp magazines or dime novels, but rather in book form, in the hope that one of you might have a copy.
