BOOK OF THE DEAD - New book by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child due May 30th!
The New York Museum of Natural History receives their pilfered gem collection back...ground down to dust. Diogenes, the psychotic killer who stole them in Dance of Death, is throwing down the gauntlet to both the city and to his brother, FBI Agent Pendergast, who is currently incarcerated in a maximum security prison. To quell the PR nightmare of the gem fiasco, the museum decides to reopen the Tomb of Senef. An astounding Egyptian temple, it was a popular museum exhibit until the 1930s, when it was quietly closed. But when the tomb is unsealed in preparation for its gala reopening, the killings--and whispers of an ancient curse--begin again. And the catastrophic opening itself sets the stage for the final battle between the two brothers: an epic clash from which only one will emerge alive.

This chilling new collection also contains Henry James' wonderfully atmospheric short novel The Turn of the Screw.

ReelArt Studios and Dark Horse Comics Ink Sales Agreement
Dark Horse Comics and ReelArt Studios have announced an agreement for Dark Horse to act as exclusive sales agent for Reel Arts upcoming program of licensed, limited-edition statues, busts and wall plaques.

We are very excited to be associated with
ReelArt Studios in putting this sales program together, Dark Horse Vice President Product Development David Scroggy stated, and are confident that they will help us make the release of these highly collectable, top quality limited editions a key component of both Dark Horse's and Reel Art's collector program.

"Mike Richardson is one of my business heroes."
ReelArt Studios President Michael Hudson remarked, "and Dark Horse is an amazing company, well managed and staffed with people who love what they do. The company has stood the test of time and has never forgotten it's roots. With a sales and marketing staff that is second to none, unparalleled product quality, like minded business principles and a matching love for pop culture, I couldn't imagine a better union for ReelArt Studios. I anticipate great things to come from this exciting venture with Dark Horse."

I echo Michael's excitement, Dark Horse President Mike Richardson responded. Ever since I looked over their product line, I knew that our two companies would be a great fit. Many of my favorite artists and characters are represented, such as Frank Frazetta, Tarzan, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Frank Cho and William Stout, to name just a few.

The initial offerings handled by Dark Horse will be: Going Ape, based on work by Neal and Jason Adams; Dino Girl ,based on work by William Stout; Number One, also inspired by Stout; The Blue Bulleteer from AC Comics; The Three Stooges wall plaque; Suzanne, inspired by Gil Elvgren and Attack of the Brain Monster, inspired by Brett Blevins.

There is a full schedule of upcoming projects, which can be viewed at reelartstudios.com. Of special note is a series of four large statues that capture the most famous paintings of legendary artist Frank Frazetta in three dimensions. The first of these, Snow Giants, is slated for display at both
ReelArt Studios and Dark Horse Comics booths at Comic-Con International in San Diego July 20-23. Sculpted by Tony Cipriano, this oversize masterpiece is one of the most eagerly-anticipated pieces in years.

The creation of these sculptures begins with the design. Some of the field's top sculptors are contracted, and at this point traditional sculpting and painting takes place, arriving at a finished piece that is remarkably true to the look and style of the original subject matter. Edition sizes are carefully considered, resulting in a track record of quick sell-outs that enhances each pieces investment potential.

Since 1986, Dark Horse Comics has published original comic books, graphic novels and collectable merchandise items. In recent years, it has selectively added distributed items to its own product line, under the direction of Rachelle Callaway, Director of Distributed Products.

THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL - Now available!
Paul Malmont's upcoming novel THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL  is "a modern take on the pulp novel, concerning the rivalry and friendship between the leading pulp writers of the thirties: Walter Gibson, creator of The Shadow, and Lester Dent, creator of Doc Savage".

Set in 1937, when America has turned to the pulps for relief from the Depression, it is at once a valentine to an old-fashioned genre as well as a modern meta-literary examination of the classic hero pulp.  The death of H.P. Lovecraft propels the pulp era's greatest writers and rivals Walter (The Shadow) Gibson and Lester (Doc Savage) Dent into a real-life adventure even greater than the ones they imagine.  Among the characters appearing in the book are L. Ron Hubbard, Robert Heinlein, Orson Welles, and (probably of particular interest to you as a Western writer!) a young sea-faring cowboy by the name of Lew Moore.  THE CHINATOWN DEATH CLOUD PERIL is a swash-buckling romantic tale of writers and writing, magic and love, marriage and fatherhood, ambition and loss that weaves the true lives of its real-life characters into a fictional epic.

A sneak peek of the novel is now online on the Chinatown Death Cloud Peril website.
The website should whet your appetites and give you an indication of what is to come.

Dark Horse Comics to publish Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser!
Mike Richardson, president of Dark Horse Comics, told SCI FI Wire that Dark Horse's book and entertainment divisions recently acquired the book publication and movie rights to multiple award-winning author Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser fantasy stories. "Basically we will reprint the original [novels and collections], probably at the rate of three per year," Richardson said in an interview. That will appear later this year, the entire series in book form."

Dark Horse will also be launching a brand-new comic-book series for Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, which will feature graphic adaptations of the original Leiber stories, as well as original material.

Dark Horse Comics to publish Robert E. Howard characters in addition to Conan!
Mike Richardson, president of Dark Horse Comics, told SCI FI Wire that Dark Horse is working on a deal with Conan Properties, which would allow them to bring other famous Robert E. Girasol Collectables Inc. is pleased to announce ANOTHER major Robert E. Howard facsimile project!
Fall 2006 will see the release of THE EXOTIC WRITINGS OF ROBERT E. HOWARD. EXOTIC WRITINGS will be another hardcover edition of approximately 500 facsimile pages, similar in format to

John Carter of Mars Film - Delayed!
Director Jon Favreau has been engaged by Marvel Studios to direct a movie adaptation of Iron Man, a Marvel project based on the comics hero. The Iron Man project was set up at New Line for several years with Nick Cassavetes engaged as director and David Hayter, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar as screenwriters.

Favreau intends to take up the assignment early next year and it will be his next movie. The project he has been handling -- Paramount's John Carter of Mars -- has been put on hold because of the relaunch of that studio's Star Trek franchise.

PULPCON 35 - August 3-6, 2006
PULPCON 35 will be held August 3-6, 2006 at the Dayton Convention Center in Dayton, Ohio.
Ernest Chiriacka and William Tenn to be Guests of Honor
William Tenn was a major figure in science fiction magazines after his first SF story "Alexander the Bait" appeared in the May, 1946 Astounding until he became a professor of English at Pennsylvania State University in 1966. His satirical and ironic stories from the period which have been anthologized dozens of times were collected into two super volumes by NESFA in 2001. They have been translated into more than a dozen languages. Earlier sports, detective and western magazines sometimes had them as written by Kenneth Putnam. Tenn was an editor at Popular Publications and edited one anthology, "Children of Wonder" in 1953. He is now Professor Emeritus at Penn State and, at 87, a rabid football fan.

Ernest Chiriacka, who attended Pulpcon last year, had outstanding covers on pulps in several fields. Two of his paintings appeared in an advertisement in the December 2004 issue of Illustration, supporting that magazine and the entire community of illustration fans making it a success. A later issue had a lengthy article about him which featured quite a few of his striking action cover paintings. Hal Steeger of Popular Publications rated him "one of the very best in quality and to work with". Since enjoying Pulpcon 34, Chiriacki has been guest of honor at the Windy City convention and Rich Harvey's shorter and smaller gathering in New Jersey.

Pulpcon is introducing a new price structure for memberships, offering full memberships Thursday-Sunday (T-S), Friday-Sunday (F-S) and Saturday-Sunday (S-S). Dealers will be required to purchase T-S memberships.

Memberships arriving at the Pulpcon mailbox on or before May 13, 2006 are $20 (T-S) and $10 (S-S).
Memberships arriving in our box May 14th through July 15th are: $30 T-S, $20 F-S and $10 S-S.
Those arriving July 16th or later will be held for at-the-door registration: $40 (T-S), $20 (F-S) and $10 (S-S).

Watch the PULPCON website for the latest information as it becomes available.
