Age of Aces - Now available!

"The Iron Ace" by William E. Barrett
In the Misty Skies of WWI France, history is written with flaming guns! And Yank airman Hugh McQuillen had smashed his way into those history books as "The Iron Ace."

Assigned as the C.O. of a Royal Flying Corps squadron, and prowling the skies in his deadly war plane adorned with the Laughing Skull, he was a grim and unrelenting instrument of war who killed Germans with such ruthless efficiency that he became known on both sides of the line as "The Assassin." McQuillen believed there was no decent way to bring men to a violent end, so he would not bow to the "chivalry of the air" practiced by his R.F.C. mates and the Germans. This made the Iron Ace a marked man, and his enemies would stop at nothing to bring an end to his savage reign.

Written by William E. Barrett, the nine tales of "The Iron Ace" appeared in Sky Birds magazine from 1933 through 1934. Barrett is best remembered for his novels, The Left Hand of God and The Lillies of the Field. But he was initially a very busy writer for the pulp magazines. And while much of his work was in the air war mags, he also contributed to the western and detective pulps. One of Barrett's most popular characters appeared in a series of stories in Dime Detective. "Needle Mike" was an undercover crime fighter who posed a s a tattoo artist.

"The Iron Ace" is available from Amazon
Mike Chomko Books, and Adventure House.

Blood ‘n’ Thunder #27 (Summer 2010) - Now available!
Blood ‘n’ Thunder #27 (Summer 2010) is entirely devoted to a celebration of the legendary pulp magazine Adventure, the first issue of which was published exactly 100 years ago. Every article has an Adventure theme. The “Tricks of the Trade” department, for example, offers a lengthy excerpt from The Fundamentals of Fiction Writing, a 1922 how-to for aspiring fictioneers written by the magazine’s best-known editor, Arthur Sullivant Hoffman. “Series Spotlight” trains a bright light on the fascinating Lady Fulvia of Rocca Forte yarns by Farnham Bishop and Arthur Gilchrist Brodeur—a 1918-20 series that may well have inspired Robert E. Howard’s much-later creation of Red Sonja. And “Cliffhanger Classics” covers The Red Rider, a 1934 Buck Jones chapter play adapted from a W. C. Tuttle novel serialized in Adventure.

The issue’s extra-long feature articles include Tom Krabacher’s extensive biography/career overview of favorite Adventure contributor Gordon Young, and a modern-day version of “The Camp-Fire,” the venerable pulp’s regular forum for letters from authors and readers alike. The latter feature discusses Adventure’s glory days in depth and includes contributions from some of the magazine’s most avid fans and collectors, including Doug Ellis, Dave Scroggs, Tom Krabacher, Ralph Grasso, Brian Taves, Digges La Touche, Walker Martin, and BnT editor Ed Hulse. Closing out BnT’s Summer 2010 number are reprints of an early Gordon Young thriller and one of the Lady Fulvia stories. This 108-page issue contains dozens of illustrations, including reproductions of many rare Adventure covers.

Blood ‘n’ Thunder is available from editor/publisher Ed Hulse for $11.95 plus $2.50 postage.
BnT appears three times yearly and subscriptions can be had for $30.
Payments can be made via check, money order, or Paypal.

Contact Ed at bnteditor@yahoo.com for further details and ordering information.

Altus Press - Announcement of an agreement to print new Paul Powers stories!
Altus Press, one of the most prolific pulp reprint publishers, announced it has come to an agreement to publish a trio of books by noted pulp author Paul S. Powers.

During the 1930s and 1940s, Paul Powers (1905-1971) was a prolific and successful pulp fiction writer, writing over 400 stories for such pulp fiction magazines as Wild West Weekly, Weird Tales, Thrilling Western, Texas Rangers, and more. Later Paul wrote an acclaimed full-length Western novel, Doc Dillahay. Paul is also the author of Pulp Writer: Twenty Years in the American Grub Street, his memoir of his career as a prolific and successful pulp fiction writer during the 1930s and 1940s. Thanks to the promotions of his granddaughter Laurie Powers, Paul Powers’ work has achieved new-found appreciation in recent years.

Two of these new books will be collections of short stories discovered in 2009. These stories were written between 1945 and 1955 but were never published. Many are westerns, but there are also noir, thriller, animal, horror, and love stories. Together they show Powers’ remarkable versatility: He was an expert at writing westerns, but he loved writing other genres as well. Current publishing plans call for this material to be split into two collections: there will be at least one collection of western stories and one for the stories of other genres.

In addition to these never-before published stories, there will also be a third collection containing Powers’ westerns that appeared in such magazines as Thrilling Western, Range Riders Western, The Rio Kid Western, and other magazines from the 1940s and 1950s.

These stories will be published in traditional book form (both hard and softcover) as well as e-book form. Publication is expected to begin Winter 2009/10.

Altus Press is a premier pulp fiction publisher and has published authors such as Lester Dent, Johnston McCulley, Henry Kuttner, Norvell Page, Frederick C. Davis, Richard Sale, Tom Johnson, Will Murray and many more. In 2009, founder Matthew Moring won the Echoes Award for work benefiting the pulp community and has also won an American Graphic Design Award for book design.

THE FANTASY FAN - Coming in September; Pre-sale going on now!
THE FANTASY FAN is the complete run of 18 issues dating from September 1933 to February 1935 and contains original first published stories and poems by such amazing people as Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, H.P. Lovecraft, and many more.  Edited by the then 17 year old Charles Hornig, it was the first weird fiction zine ever.

Over the course of a year, the publisher was able to obtain 6 original copies, and xerox duplicates of 3 more, but only knowing half the story, he was obsessed with reading it all.  Fate stepped in and through another fan, he was loaned the remaining issues, and decided to make this into one complete book.  Each page was carefully scanned and cleaned up the areas that were difficult to read, but not altering the typos or layout, so you still felt like you were reading a 75 year old zine.

One thing we did do as a tribute to Mr, Hornig is finish the uncompleted "Supernatural Horror in Literature" essay by H.P. Lovecraft.

This is a limited pressing of 200 books and the presale is only for the first 50, the balance will be available when the book is finished.  Many treats and bonuses are included for those of you who decide to pre order.
You get.....

1. The Fantasy Fan hardcover book

This is an adventure set in a world where the civilizations of Old Earth are crumbling, where conflict and strife are the everyday realities of life, where people struggle to survive beneath the heels of power-mad emperors. This is a tale of tragedy, war, pain, deceit, treachery, death, heroism and love; of evil men and dark esoteric powers. This is a saga of bloody and barbarous war, a yarn of romance, a saga of friends, allies, and enemies, a fable of humanity's endless conflict... by the author of “Under the Suns of Antares” and “The Eternal Warrior”.

Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES -  Coming in November!
Battle in the Dawn: The Complete Hok the Mighty
By Manly Wade Wellman with an introduction by David Drake

In the 1930s, a very unusual tale appeared in the influential Amazing Stories magazine. Unlike the usual yarns of robots and interstellar travel, this “Battle in the Dawn” featured the brutal exploits of Hok, the first hero of humanity, in his struggles against the savage Neanderthals. Written by rising pulpster Manly Wade Wellman (Who Fears the Devil?), who would later achieve fame for his American folktales of Silver John and beat out William Faulkner for a prestigious writing award, the story and its brave hero struck a chord with Amazing’s readers, and several additional adventures followed, taking Hok through the prehistory of mankind to battle unrelenting cavemen, explore the lost city of Atlantis, discover new technology, and chart a new destiny for humanity.

Now, for the first time ever, Planet Stories presents a complete authorized collection of all of Wellman’s rare Hok the Mighty tales, packed with unfinished story fragments, all-new illustrations, and a brand new introduction written by Wellman’s longtime friend, fantasy author David Drake!

Full stories include:
Battle in the Dawn
Hok Goes to Atlantis
Hok Draws the Bow
Hok and the Gift of Heaven
Hok Visits the Land of Legends
Day of the Conquerors

Robert E. Howard Foundation - New Robert E. Howard Items Discovered!
The Robert E. Howard Foundation’s board of directors has been hard at work this summer, and Foundation members will start reaping the rewards this fall. The most exciting news is that several new items by Howard have been unearthed.

Friends of REH and Legacy Circle members will find two of these “new” items in the Fall Newsletter. While doing some research on Brownwood this year, Rob Roehm stumbled upon two previously undocumented, humorous items by Howard. Unknown to bibliographers, scholars, and fans, both will make their first appearance since the 1920s in the next Newsletter. Sign up now!

As the year ends, the Newsletter will begin featuring items discovered by Paul Herman in the Tevis Clyde Smith Collection at Texas A&M. Several of these have never been published and were completely unknown. Thanks to Paul’s digging, we now have one new poem, one new letter, and one new drawing. And there may be even more interesting finds as he sorts through the stacks.

Support the Foundation by becoming a member. The Foundation will use annual membership fees to reach its missions and goals.
The different levels of membership are:

$20 – as a Supporting Member you will receive a 10% discount on REHF and REH Foundation Press (REHFP) books and merchandise.
$50 – as a Friend of REH you will receive the member discount above as well as the REHF newsletter, and your name posted (if wanted) on the website.
$100 – Legacy Circle members will receive all the above, along with invitations to special events, plus a yearly REHF pin. Legacy Circle members might also get other additional benefits during the year.

To become a member, pay either with PayPal to paypal@rehfoundation.org, or by sending a check to The Robert E. Howard Foundation, PO Box 251242, Plano, TX, 75025. Your membership will be valid for one full year from the date you sign up.

GIDEON CAIN - THE DEMON HUNTER

Airship 27 Productions & Cornerstone Book Publishers have teamed up with noted fantasy, science fiction author, Van Allen Plexico to bring to life a brand new sword wield adventurer; Gideon Cain – The Demon Hunter.  Originally conceived on an internet forum, this swashbuckling, globe trotting avenger is the result of half a dozen creative minds pooling their ideas and imaginations into bringing forth a tortured hero cast in a classic pulp mold.

During the famous Salem Witch Trials (1692-93) British born Puritan soldier, Gideon Cain aided the inquisitions, believing them to be just.  Soon thereafter, God revealed to Cain that he and the righteous citizens of Salem had been duped by a cunning, ageless demon from Hell known as Azazel.  The guilt of his actions weighs heavily on his conscience and rather than be driven mad by it, Gideon chooses to make atonement.  Taking up his sword, the blade inscribed with holy runes, he bids farewell to his wife and children and departs on his sacred mission.  Now he wanders the earth doing God’s work and destroying evil in whatever shape or guise it appears; his one consuming goal, to find and destroy Azazel.

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to be bringing pulp fans this great new character written in the tradition of Robert E. Howard’s Solomon Kane.  Here are seven exciting, action packed tales of the Demon Hunter by Scott Harris, Brian Zavitz, K.G.McAbee, Ian Watson, James Palmer, David Wright and Van Allen Plexico.   Design and interior illustrations by Art Director Rob Davis with a painted cover by Davis and Shane Evans.  The book also features a special introduction by co-creator, Kurt Busiek.  (Marvels – Astro City)

Haffner Press - New titles announced for 2011!
We took the first delivery of DETOUR TO OTHERNESS by Henry Kuttner & C.L. Moore while at Pulpfest 2010 in Columbus, Ohio last week. We expect to receive the balance of the inventory in a few days and plan to begin fulfilling all the preorders by August 16th. Bear with us as we plow through: we are shipping orders for customers who got in on the WITH FOLDED HANDS / DETOUR TO OTHERNESS / "1951" combo, as well as single-copy orders of DETOUR, and our wholesale/reseller accounts. Which is a long-winded way of saying: "Thank you" to all of you for really supporting DETOUR with this traffic. We hope you enjoy the finished book. We think it's a winner, and probably the best-looking best we've yet published.

Meanwhile, with so much news to share, we'll just lay it out in brief  and, please, contact us anytime at info@haffnerpress.com with any questions.

1) We're assured of a dealers' table at World Fantasy Convention in Columbus, OH Oct. 28-31, so if you're attending, stop by our booth and say hello. We should have at least one new title by then, ideally two!

2) We are applying the finishing touches to THE UNIVERSE WRECKERS, the 3rd Collected Edmond Hamilton volume. We're awaiting the proofreaders work on the 170+ page appendix. Aside from some really great (and some unreprinted) stories, this volume's appendix alone is worth your $40. I'm looking forward to it myself!

Hard Case Crime / Dorchester Publishing
Those of you who are tuned in to goings-on in the publishing industry may have seen the announcement last week from Dorchester Publishing that they've decided to get out of the business of publishing mass-market paperback novels (the main business they've been in for the past 40 years).  Instead, they've announced they're only going to publish ebooks and a limited number of larger trade paperbacks, using a 'print on demand' process.

What does this have to do with Hard Case Crime? Well, for the past six years, Dorchester has been the company that has printed and distributed our books.  They're a first-rate company run by good people, and I'm sorry to see them going through tough times.  I'm also sorry to see them stop publishing books in our format.  What does this mean for us?  Well, either we'll need to switch from the smaller "mass market" format to the larger "trade" format, or we'll need to start working with another publisher, or both.  (Most likely both, but we'll see.)

It'll take a little while for this all to get sorted out, and I apologize for delays in the meantime.  Our August title, Brett Halliday's MURDER IS MY BUSINESS, has shipped to booksellers and is available right now.  I'd encourage you to grab a copy while you can -- it's a terrific book (with a gorgeous Robert McGinnis cover), and it'll be the last new Hard Case Crime book you'll see for a while.  The next two -- QUARRY'S EX by Max Allan Collins and CHOKE HOLD by Christa Faust -- will not be coming out in October and March as planned.  They will come out -- but probably not till sometime later next year.  We'll keep you posted as soon as we know when.

And you'll be glad to know we're already at work on subsequent titles.  It's too early to spill the beans about what they are -- but it looks like books #69 and #70 will actually be by the same author, one well known to readers of our line.  The former will be a reprint, the latter a brand-new book, and both are very exciting.  As soon as I can let the cat out of the bag (once the ink is dry on the contracts!), you'll hear more.

After that?  Well, you won't be seeing a new book every month, but I expect you'll continue to see a handful of new Hard Case Crime titles each year, and rest assured they'll be good ones.  Stay tuned to your email for news and announcements (also not every month -- but every time we've got news to share, I promise).

And if you're a member of the Hard Case Crime Book Club, I'd say don't cancel that subscription just yet -- again, it's too early to talk about what we've got in store, but a neat idea has surfaced for a way to keep the books coming and if it works out, I think you're going to like it.  (I know I'm excited about it.)

In the meantime, I want to thank you all for your years of support and your passion for our books -- it feels good to know so many of you are as excited about these books as I am, and (circumstances permitting) I'm looking forward to bringing you more of them for years to come.

Best,
Charles Ardai, Editor

In the shadow of the Gray Mosque, generals and emirs jockey for position under the scheming eyes of the powerful grand vizier, Jalal; in the crowded Souk, these factions use murder and terror to silence their opposition. Egypt bleeds and the scent draws her enemies in like sharks: Shirkuh, the swaggering Kurd who serves the pious and severe Sultan of Damascus, and Amalric, the Christian king of Jerusalem whose insatiable greed knows no bounds.

Yet, the Caliph of Cairo has an unexpected ally—an old man who lives on a remote Asian mountaintop, a place where eagles fear to tread. This benefactor, the Shaykh al-Jabal, the Old Man of the Mountain, holds the ultimate power of life and death over the warring factions of the Moslem world, and he sends his greatest weapon into Egypt.

He sends Caliph Rashid al-Hasan, a single man. An Assassin. The one they call the Emir of the Knife . . .

will encompass almost 800 pages and include more than 5,900 illustrations.

  • Annotated listings for each chapter play, including cast, directors, chapter titles and commentary.
  • Reproductions of rare stills, posters and actual film frames: a remarkable number in color-some for the first time.
  • Full color and black and white illustration throughout.

Note: an excerpt from one of the updated chapters can be found on The Nostalgia League page, Bela Lugosi's Last Serial.

PayPal: Click the PayPal link on the website and you will be taken to the PayPal site where you can buy the book with your PayPal account or major credit card.

Special Offer - Everyone who buys a copy of Book One will receive $5 off the purchase price of Book Two!

The forthcoming Book Two contains longer, and extensively illustrated, entries on every cliffhanger of the sound period, including the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, and Superman duos, the Flash Gordon trio, the Dick Tracy quartet, and the classic Adventures of Captain Marvel, Drums of FuManchu, Spy Smasher — 232 in all.

Also covered individually are lesser known, but quite entertaining, adventures that brought kids to the theaters each Saturday. And, of course, there is the parade of Westerns with Buck Jones, Johnny Mack Brown, Wild Bill Elliott, and others. Bela Lugosi’s serial vehicles get their individual pages or two, as do the low-priced clinkers that turned up through the years, especially in the genre’s last days.

TNL Library’s “The Green Hornet Strikes Again” is an example of Book Two’s sound entries, minus the book’s dozen illustrations for that serial.

The Movie Serial Companion: Book One - Recommended!
THE MOVIE SERIAL COMPANION Book One is the first of two books about the classic cliffhangers that thrilled the multitudes during the first half of the 20th century. The book starts off with a five-chapter history of America’s film serials that runs for 62 pages and covers both the silent and the sound film eras. The text is easily read, engaging, informative, and insightful. My interest never flagged and I learned many things that I was not previously aware of. For instance, I did not know that most serials had two directors, one shooting while the other prepared the next days work, or one doing location scenes while the other did interiors. Following the beginning chapters of the book is a 225 page annotated listing of the American serials of the silent era. The listing is done alphabetically by serial title. Most of the serials merit at least a full page which includes the date of the serial, the studio, the director(s), a listing of the players, a listing of the chapter titles, a synopsis of the story, and a brief commentary. Each listing is accompanied with numerous stills of scenes from the serial and of the players. Some of the entries also include the one-sheet advertising for the film or magazine covers featuring the serial or its players. Each serial entry averages at least 3-to-4 illustrations. Illustrations are in black and white and full color throughout. All-in-all, this book is obviously a labor of love and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to the publication of the second book in the series.

Hunt the Space-Witch!
By Robert Silverberg with a new introduction by the author!

Science-fiction legend Robert Silverberg reflects on some of his earliest, least-reprinted tales in this new Planet Stories collection! Between 1956 and 1958, Silverberg contributed dozens of short stories and novellas to the digest pulps, each written in the bombastic, high-adventure style of the original Planet Stories magazine. Since then, those tales have re-appeared only rarely (and sometimes never again) in long out-of-print paperback anthologies. This volume, the first of three to come this year, features seven hard-to-find classic Silverberg novellas:

Slaves of the Star Giants
Spawn of the Deadly Sea
The Flame and the Hammer
Valley Beyond Time
Hunt the Space-Witch!
The Silent Invaders
Spacerogue
Never before collected in a single edition, these stories reveal the early action-packed tales of one of speculative fiction's most important voices!

The Black Lizard Big Book of Black Mask Stories
Edited by Otto Penzler
Coming September 21, 2010!

An unstoppable anthology of crime stories culled from Black Mask magazine the legendary publication that turned a pulp phenomenon into literary mainstream.

Black Mask was the apotheosis of noir.  It was the magazine where the first hardboiled detective story, which was written by Carroll John Daly appeared.  It was the slum in which such American literary titans like Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler got their start, and it was the home of stories with titles like “Murder Is Bad Luck,” “Ten Carets of Lead,” and “Drop Dead Twice.” Collected here is best of the best, the hardest of the hardboiled, and the darkest of the dark of America’s finest crime fiction. This masterpiece collection represents a high watermark of America’s underbelly. Crime writing gets no better than this.

Featuring:
   • Deadly Diamonds
   • Dancing Rats
   • A Prize Fighter Fighting for His Life
   • A Parrot that Wouldn’t Talk

Conan's Brethren: The Complete Collection - Coming soon!
Robert E. Howard was a pulpwriter who turned his hand to everything from historical adventure and detective stories to Western and boxing fiction - and invented the genre now known as sword-and-sorcery: it is for these tales of heroic fantasy and horror that he is best remembered. In the pages of WEIRD TALES and other pulp magazines his mighty heroes - the vengeful Puritan swashbuckler Solomon Kane, Kull, King of Atlantis, Bran Mak Morn, the last chieftain of the Picts, followed later by Conan the Cimmerian and many others. Following on from the success of THE COMPLETE CONAN, this companion volume will contain Robert E. Howard stories featuring Conan's brothers-in-arms, collected together in chronological order, as fresh and atmospheric today as when they were first published in the pulp magazines of more than eighty years ago. Compiled by and with an Afterword by award-winning writer and editor Stephen Jones, and with cover image, frontispiece and internal pictures by the award-winning artist Les Edwards.  736 pages, £20.00

Editor Stephen Jones has reported that this book will be available in November 2010,
although the publisher's website lists an onsale date of January 2011.

Haffner Press - Now available!
DETOUR TO OTHERNESS by Henry Kuttner & C.L. Moore

In 1961, Ballantine Books published Bypass to Otherness, a paperback collection of some of Henry Kuttner's (and C. L. Moore's) best short stories.  Several selections were drawn from Kuttner's popular series such as the "Hogbens" (comedic otherworldly hillbillies living in America), "Gallegher Galloway" (scientist who invents technical marvels only when intoxicated),  and the "Baldies" stories eventually collected in Mutant.  Bypass was projected as the first of three "Otherness" collections of Kuttner's short fiction. Return to Otherness followed in 1962 with 8 more stories.  And then . . . nothing. The third "Otherness" collection never appeared.  Now, almost fifty years later, Haffner Press announces DETOUR TO OTHERNESS: a massive hardcover assembling the contents of both Bypass to Otherness and Return to Otherness, and adding 8 additional stories selected for their scarcity, quality, and sheer entertainment value. Grand Masters Robert Silverberg and Frederik Pohl provide introductory and afterword materials to the book, and the whole affair is decorated with an unpublished painting by Richard Powers.

Afterword by Frederik Pohl

He survived in this jungle as he had in that other one—by expecting trouble.

March 2011

NEWS: As digital books continue to gain market share, one of the country's oldest mass paperback publishers is abandoning its traditional print books and making its titles available in digital format and print-on-demand only.  Dorchester Publishing Inc., a closely held book and magazine house, said it is making the switch after its book unit sales fell 25% last year, in part because of declining orders from some of its key retail accounts, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Hard Case Crime, an imprint owned by closely held Winterfall LLC, said it may seek to move its mystery books from Dorchester to another publishing house. "It's been a good run, but if they aren't publishing mass market paperbacks, we'll have to decide what to do. I'm a believer in the mass format, but I do understand the reality of the marketplace," said  Charles Ardai, who owns Hard Case Crime.""  The Wall Street Journal

Edited by John Locke

In an era of odd magazines, Macfadden's GHOST STORIES (1926-31) was a standout of the strange. It tapped into occult interest by presenting haunted tales that may or may not have been true. If they were true, then GHOST STORIES was testament to the presence of spirits in every exciting arena, the Western Front, gangland, aviation, the Klondike, the circus, the theater; not coincidentally, all the varied settings that pulp stories employed.

The personnel that created GHOST STORIES, though not well remembered today in most cases, were an uncommonly talented and fascinating group. They include poets and scholars, war heroes and war correspondents, adventurers and Bohemians. A few were titans of magazine publishing and editing. A few developed into prolific pulpsters; a few became bestselling authors; a few went Hollywood; one earned a Pulitzer Prize for fiction. And because it's GHOST STORIES, a few led haunted lives: within these pages appear two murderers, a murder victim, a suicide, and several casualties of tragic accidents.

Volume 1 presents 19 spooky tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes the history of GHOST STORIES, and detailed biographies of every GHOST STORIES editor, and every author whose stories appear in Volume 1.

Volume 2 presents 15 eerie tales from GHOST STORIES, complete with original illustrations. Extensive nonfiction material includes detailed biographies of every author whose stories appear in Volume 2, and every GHOST STORIES cover artist. Also included is a gallery of all 64 GHOST STORIES covers.

All stories complete with original illustrations.

The Shadow - Quentin Tarantino to direct new feature film?
Rumors are circling the Internet that Quentin Tarantino may be directing a new Shadow movie.
However, when asked for comment on this report, an official representative of Tarantino said "There is no truth to this story."

Earlier this year, Latino Review reported that Sony sold the rights to The Shadow to 20th Century Fox. The report stated that Sam Raimi,  who had been attached to the project for years, but had never done anything with it, had passed the directing reigns on to David Slade (30 Days of Night, Twilight: Eclipse). The Shadow script is reported to currently be out for a rewrite.
