Welcome to another volume of Terror Trios from Altus Press. Each volume in this series will present three novels from the great weird menace pulps from Popular Publications. Dime Mystery Magazine, Terror Tales, and Horror Stories frequently ran lengthy pieces of 20,000 words or more that have sadly been ignored by anthologists due to their length.

This series will present for the first time in book form notable works by authors such as Hugh B. Cave, Wyatt Blassingame, Wayne Rogers and others. Noted horror author and pulp scholar, John Pelan has assembled a series of books that will bring back into print some of the most notable works in the genre. Don’t miss a single volume!

by Audrey Parente; Foreword by Theodore Roscoe

The allure of French Foreign Legionnaire Thibaut Corday’s adventures flowed from the pen of Theodore Roscoe. Exotic tales from a dusky outpost unfolded in glossy-covered 10-cent magazines, before television. Hundreds of Roscoe’s yarns, published on cheap pulp paper unraveled mysteries, immortalized hometown heroes and stirred the imagination of a generation. In real life, Roscoe stowed aboard tramp steamers and mingled with locals in far away corners. His intriguing style later echoed in non-fiction works, when he was among the first to view declassified Lincoln assassination documents and when he documented historic American military operations. Journalist Audrey Parente became steeped in American pulp history when she lived blocks away from Roscoe in Ormond Beach, Florida, where she chronicled his life for this book.

Classic Heroes Publishing
ZORRO - THE MASTER'S EDITION Volume 1

Now available!
Classic Heroes Publishing proudly announces the launch
of their all new ZORRO - The Masters Edition Line.
Officially licensed by Zorro Productions Inc.

When the first Zorro novel, “The Curse of Capistrano,” appeared in All-Story Weekly in 1919, Johnston McCulley thought his hero was ready to retire. At the end of that story (later published as The Mark of Zorro), Don Diego Vega gave up his mask, sword and cape, revealed his identity to the citizens of Los Angeles, and announced his intention to marry. But that was before Douglas Fairbanks filmed the 1920 silent blockbuster, The Mark of Zorro, and Zorro became an instant icon. McCulley’s fans wanted more, and he responded with the six-part serial, “The Further Adventures of Zorro,” in 1922.

In this sequel to The Mark of Zorro, Diego Vega’s wedding plans are ruined when his beloved is kidnapped by a band of pirates raiding the California coast. Don Diego is forced to don his cape and mask once more, and Zorro returns with a vengeance.

Over a period of forty years, McCulley produced five Zorro novels and fifty-nine shorter adventures. Many of those tales have never been reprinted, and those that have are extremely hard to come by.

Now, at long last, The Zorro Masters Edition brings you the entire saga in limited edition, illustrated hardcover volumes. And you’re in for a real treat - McCulley’s prose is as fresh and exciting as when it first appeared. Ride with Zorro and discover for yourself why he became one of the most popular adventure heroes of all time!

There are also several new publications that are reviving both the heroes and tradition of pulp fiction.

Update!
Will Murray and Joe DeVito will be attending Pulp AdventureCon!
They are the writer and artist, of course, on THE WILD ADVENTURES  OF DOC SAVAGE from Altus Press.
Also attending will be Eric Battle, who drew the TARZAN newspaper strip for a couple of years.
Last, but not least, Mala Mastroberte will be appearing.
Mala has a new book coming out of her poses and pulpy homages.

Checkout Mala's website at http://malaland.artistswanted.org/

Pulp magazines were an inexpensive form of entertainment in the days before the internet, cell phones, and even television.
They first appeared with Argosy in 1897, flourished in the 1930s, and ultimately died or reinvented themselves in the 1950s.
Vendors and guests will be announced over the coming weeks.

Dealers: Cost is $45 for one table, and  $40 for additional tables.

The Pulp AdventureCon will be held at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ.
The show runs from 10AM to 5PM. Admission is $5.00.

PulpFest 2013 Plans Are Underway!

The PulpFest committee is delighted to announce that our 2013 convention will once again be held at the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Columbus, Ohio. Our 2013 confab will take place from Thursday, July 25th, through Sunday, July 28th. It will boast the same combination of product and programming that has made PulpFest the must-attend annual event for fans, scholars, and collectors of pulp fiction.

Two very important anniversaries will figure prominently in PulpFest’s 2013 programming. First and foremost, we are celebrating the hero pulp revolution that began 80 years ago in 1933, with the debuts of such popular figures as Doc Savage, The Spider, Nick Carter, Pete Rice, The Lone Eagle, The Phantom Detective, and G-8 and His Battle Aces. The success of Street & Smith’s Shadow pulp, launched two years earlier, spurred this revival of single-character magazines, which had been a phenomenon of the dime-novel era. The hero pulps revitalized an industry laid low by the Great Depression, and they dominated the rough-paper field for the rest of the decade. They remain the most avidly collected and frequently reprinted periodicals in the hobby.

Secondarily, we acknowledge the centennial of Sax Rohmer’s Dr. Fu Manchu, who made his American bow in a February 1913 issue of Collier’s Magazine. The initial cycle of short stories was published between hard covers later that year as The Insidious Dr. Fu Manchu. The first and greatest of “Yellow Peril” villains, Rohmer’s Devil Doctor was widely imitated throughout American popular culture; rough-paper knockoffs included the mysterious Wu Fang and Dr. Yen Sin, both featured in short-lived pulps issued by Popular Publications.

With so many possibilities for panels and presentations, the PulpFest committee once again plans to offer a full night of programming on Thursday, before the convention’s “official” opening on Friday, so attendees are urged to make early arrival a part of their PulpFest travel plans.

The Hyatt Regency has asked for a modest increase in guest-room rates, which will be $112 per night as opposed to the $109 we paid this year.  However, to reward loyal attendees who support the convention by staying at the host hotel, PulpFest is happy to be able to offer a ten-dollar rebate redeemable at the registration desk. This will cover the three-dollar nightly increase incurred by Hyatt guests.

We are also happy to once again supply a third table free of charge to exhibitors who stay at the Hyatt and rent two tables in our hucksters’ room. That’s three tables for the price of two, or six for the price of four. The massive size of the Regency Ballroom enables us to provide this extra exhibit space to loyal PulpFest dealers, for whose continued support we are most grateful. Remember, though, this special offer is good only to dealers staying at the host hotel.

Although the 2013 convention is still ten months away, you can rest assured that the committee is already hard at work on planning and promotion. Ideas for panels and presentations have already been proposed and, as always, we remain open to programming suggestions and volunteer presenters. Most importantly, though, we wanted to let you know that our venue is confirmed. So start saving for the next PulpFest right away and check back periodically for updates.

Altus Press
Altus Press Announces Publishing Agreement
with the Estate of James B. Hendryx!

Plans For Collections of Stories Never Before in Book Form!

Altus Press today announced a publishing agreement with the Estate of James B. Hendryx to reprint the complete set of his long-running series featuring the characters of Halfaday Creek.

"It's quite an honor to be able to present the stories of Black John Smith and Halfaday Creek to an all-new audience," Altus Press publisher Matt Moring stated. "For such a popular series, I'm excited by the chance to present these stories with the respect they justly deserve."

James B. Hendryx (1880-1963) was the author of more than 50 novels and anthologies, and wrote hundreds of stories. And Hendryx wrote what he knew, spending time in Alaska, Canada, and the Wyoming badlands. But he's best known for his characters set around the outlaw community of Halfaday Creek in the Yukon. Set during the Gold Rush of the late 1890s, Hendryx penned over a hundred stories featuring these characters over the span of 25 years for magazines such as West, Dime Western, New Western, Argosy, and the primary home for the Halfaday Creek series, Short Stories.

Many of the Halfaday Creek stories were edited and reprinted in a series of 13 hardcover books which were released between 1935 and 1951. However, some of these books are quite scarce and difficult to find on the antiquarian book market.

Thanks to the research of Hendryx fans such as Richard Hall, the original sources that comprise these 13 Halfaday Creek hardcovers have been identified, will be reprinted along with the illustrations from their original pulp magazine appearances, and will be augmented with rare material taken from the James B. Hendryx archives currently held by the Leelanau Historical Society in Leland, MI.

In addition to these reprints, enough uncollected stories have been identified to comprise four additional, "new" Halfaday Creek collections. These too will contain material from the Hendryx archives and will match the dress and design of the other Halfaday Creek reprints.

The first wave of releases will include reprints of two older Halfaday Creek titles, Skullduggery on Halfaday Creek (1946) and The Saga of Halfaday Creek (1947), along with the first of the "new" collections, entitled Adventures on Halfaday Creek. A similar release schedule will continue until all of the Halfaday Creek books have returned to print. This first wave will see publication in early 2013.

The Halfaday Creek Library will be be available in softcover, hardcover, and in the various popular e-book formats.

For more information about James B. Hendryx, the Halfaday Creek series, or Altus Press, please visit the links below.

BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #34

Now available!

Murania Press hits next week’s PulpFest with several new publications, beginning with BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER #34. This jumbo-sized Tenth Anniversary Issue boasts something unique in pulpzine history: the reprinting of a complete, book-length (60,000 words) novel. The yarn is Francis Lynde’s “B. Typhosus Takes a Hand,” originally published in a 1922 issue of THE POPULAR MAGAZINE.

In addition to this 80-page bonus feature, the anniversary issue contains the usual complement of high-quality articles and departments. There’s a history of Chandu the Magician on radio and in film; a lengthy examination of the “New Pulp” publishing phenomenon; a 1940 WRITER’S DIGEST piece by pulp writer Nelson Bond on the importance of snappy starts to manuscripts; a revisiting of science-fictional continuities from the 1940s Superman radio show; a celebration of pulp writer Frederick Nebel’s hardboiled detectives Donahue and Cardigan; a look back at the trend-setting 1914 movie serial THE PERILS OF PAULINE; and a pictorial review of this year’s Windy City Pulp and Paper Expo. Additionally, BNT editor Ed Hulse acknowledges the magazine’s tenth anniversary in a long, incisive essay.

This special issue of BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER -- at 162 pages it’s half again as long as an average issue -- is illustrated with the usual array of pulp covers, original art, and rare photos and posters from movies. Although priced at $15.95 for single-copy buyers, it will count as a regular issue for subscribers. Subscription copies will be mailed later this month.

PIRATES OF THE PINES by A. M. Chisholm
Now available!

Also making its debut at PulpFest is A. M. Chisholm’s PIRATES OF THE PINES, #3 in Murania’s Classic Pulp Reprints series. Originally published in the October 20, 1915 issue of Street & Smith’s POPULAR MAGAZINE as “Fur Pirates,” this rousing adventure yarn is set in the wilderness fringing northwestern Canada’s great Carcajou River. It features as protagonist and narrator the 18-year-old Bob Cory, who lives with his sister Peggy on their uncle’s modest homestead.

While out one day with Jim Dunleath, an invalid who has gone north to recover his health, Bob unearths a buried letter written by notorious fur thief Angus McNab to his brother, revealing the location of a fortune in stolen pelts cached on one of the small islands that dot the nearby Burntwood Lakes. Since the 20-year-old missive never reached its intended recipient, Dunleath reasons that the treasure must still be in its hiding place. He confides in a wealthy Eastern sportsman named Fothergill, who agrees to bankroll an expedition to find the cache.

It’s giving away no secret to report that Chisholm quite deliberately patterned his tale on TREASURE ISLAND. (POPULAR’s editor Charles Agnew MacLean hinted as much in his introductory blurb to the story, which is included in Murania’s reprint.) Nearly every element in “Fur Pirates” corresponded to something in Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale. And yet Chisholm’s yarn is no slavish imitation. It’s a brilliantly executed pastiche, a genuine tour de force. The characters have personalities all their own, the settings are vividly described, and the yarn is suffused with verisimilitude. The story works magnificently on its own terms; you don’t have to be familiar with Stevenson’s immortal classic to appreciate Chisholm’s exhilarating homage. But if you are, well, that’ll just enhance the experience.

BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER’S CLIFFHANGER CLASSICS, also available at PulpFest, collects 20 informative essays that originally appeared in the pages of BNT and deal with the great movie serials. Nearly 100,000 words long and over 300 pages, the book is illustrated with two lengthy galleries including dozens of rare stills, posters and lobby cards from the serials under discussion.

TARZAN OF THE APES: A COMPARISON OF THE ALL-STORY MAGAZINE TEXT VERSUS THE A. C. MCCLURG FIRST EDITION TEXT by Jerry L. Schneider

“Tarzan of the Apes” first appeared, complete, in the October 1912 issue of The All-Story pulp magazine. In June 1914, the first hardcover edition was published by A. C. McClurg and Company. Between these two appearances of the story, the author, Edgar Rice Burroughs, modified the original magazine text because of an error in it (he included tigers in Africa!). While fixing this error, he polished/rewrote portions of the story, finishing with an additional 2,000 words of text. This book compares the two texts, side-by-side, for scholars and laymen to see the alterations the author performed on the text.

Captain Future - The Space Emperor
Now available!

The origin of Captain Future is the stuff of
Science Fiction legend!

Thrilling Publications editor-in-chief Leo Margulies and his main SF man, Mort Weisinger, attended the first World Science Fiction Convention in New York back in 1939. Impressed, Margulies blurted out, “I didn’t think you fans could be so damn sincere!” Huddling, they concocted Captain Future on the spot.

That was the legend. In reality, Margulies and Weisinger had been brainstorming the concept for many months. Conceived as a Doc Savage of the future, Curt

Newton was at first called Mr. Future. After the death of his parents, Newton was raised by a trio of surrogate parents—Grag the robot, Otho the android and Simon Wright, a scientist whose brain was kept alive after his body failed. These three reared up Curt in a secret laboratory on the Moon. His mission: to protect planetary peace.

Weisinger turned to the most popular SF writer of his generation, Edmond Hamilton, whose well-received novel starring The Three Planeteers had kicked off the first issue of Startling Stories months before. Known as “The World-Wrecker,” for his audacious star-spanning Space Opera yarns, Hamilton reimagined the new hero as Captain Future, basing the series on The Three Planeteers. The action was set in the far future—the 1990s!

Given his own magazine, the Ace of Space debuted in Captain Future and the Space Emperor, a rollicking romp that raced from the Moon to Jupiter. Backed up by his trusty proton pistol and his three nonhuman aides, Captain Future patrolled the known planets in the Comet, a supercool spaceship that camouflaged itself as a fiery comet.

The exploits of Captain Future thrilled readers from 1940 to 1951, and later became an internationally syndicated Japanese animated TV show. Here is his debut story, narrated in true retro-heterodyne style by Joey d'Auria. $23.98 Audio CDs/$11.99 Download.

The Spider #24: September 1935 King of the Red Killers
The Spider heard the first dread rumors in the secret councils of the Underworld. A keen-witted, ambitious criminal leader named El Gaucho — backed by a powerful army of brutal killers — was pillaging the West. Looting, ravaging, slaughtering wantonly, the master-mind of crime was ruthlessly following a plan which would make him King of America! Richard Wentworth — the debonair aristocrat who is in truth the deadly Spider, protector of the oppressed — knew that he must strike quickly, or die! For Wentworth, ever running a double risk, forced now to sacrifice a brave, dear friend to ghastly torture, faced a grim, new danger in the bounty-hunters who wanted to collect El Gaucho's reward — its own weight of the purest gold for the Spider's head! The Spider #26: November 1935 Death Reign of the Vampire King
They came at night — the clouds of blood-thirsting, poisonous vampire bats — led by a strange man-thing who flew high in the black sky, directing their horrible slaughter. Blood was their desire, and they sucked it from the veins of helpless infants, from the white throats and breasts of frantic women, from the hands and faces of terrorized men. While the authorities doubted and dallied, one man — Richard Wentworth, that brilliant aristocrat who, as the dread Spider, strikes terror in the Underworld — realized that this was another of the devastating onslaughts of lawless genius. Never before was the Spider so badly handicapped. With his beloved Nita captive, his loyal servants out of the battle, himself unarmed and pursued by law and criminal, he must fight the greatest battle of his life when every chance seems lost and every hope is gone..! These exciting pulp adventures have been beautifully reformatted for easy reading as an eBook and features every story, every editorial, and every column of the original pulp magazine. SET SAIL FOR ADVENTURE

Airship 27 Productions
announces the release of their newest pulp anthology title, SINBAD – The New Voyages.

The greatest seafaring adventurer of all times returns to the high seas, Sinbad the Sailor! Born of countless legends and myths, this fearless rogue sets sail across the seven seas aboard his ship, the Blue Nymph, accompanied by an international crew of colorful, larger-than-life characters. Chief among these are the irascible Omar, a veteran seamen and trusted first mate, the blond Viking giant, Ralf Gunarson, the sophisticated archer from Gaul, Henri Delacrois and the mysterious, lovely and deadly female samurai, Tishimi Osara.  All of them banded together to follow their famous captain on perilous new voyages across the world’s oceans.

“This was another opportunity for us to explore another classic pulp genre,” Managing Editor Ron Fortier explained.  “Fantasy high adventure was a popular setting in many of the more exotic themed pulp titles of the 1930s.  Doing one starring Sinbad seemed a natural choice for us.”

Writers Nancy Hansen, I.A. Watson and Derrick Ferguson offer up three classic Sinbad tales to rival those of legend while adding a familiar sensibility from the cult favorite Sinbad movies of FX master, Ray Harryhausen.  SINBAD – The New Voyages will enthrall and entertain all lovers of fantasy adventure in a brand new way; featuring cover art by Bryan Fowler and twelve black and white illustrations by Ralf van der Hoeven.

“From inception to realization, this was one of the fastest titles we’ve ever put together,” Fortier added.  “In fact we received so many submissions that we had enough to fill two books.  You can expect volume two to sail over the horizon soon.  And we couldn’t be happier.”

So pack up your you traveling bags, bid ado to your loved ones and get ready to sail with the tide as Sinbad El Ari takes the tiller and the Blue Nymph sets sails once more; its destination worlds of wonder, mystery and high adventure.

The Complete Casebook of Cardigan, Volume 2: 1933
Authored by Frederick Nebel

The greatest series from the pages of Dime Detective Magazine is finally collected in four large editions. Running from 1931-37, Frederick Nebel's P.I. Sadly, only a handful of the 44-installment series have ever been reprinted since their original appearances 80 years ago. This series collects the entire run.

Volume 2 continues the series and features the next 11 stories, complete, uncut, and with the original John Fleming Gould illustrations:

"The Murder Cure" (January, 1933)
"Me--Cardigan" (February, 1933)
"Doorway to Danger" (March 1, 1933)
"Heir to Murder" (April 1, 1933)
"Dead Man's Folly" (May 1, 1933)
"Murder Won't Wait" (May 15, 1933)
"Chains of Darkness" (June 15-July 1, 1933)
"Scrambled Murder" (July 15, 1933)
"Death After Murder" (August 15, 1933),
"Murder & Co." (September 15, 1933)

The Big Book of Ghost Stories
Vintage Crime/Black Lizard Original

Edited by Otto Penzler

Arriving in book stores September 18!

THE BIG BOOK OF GHOST STORIES is a spirited Black Lizard anthology with over a thousand pages of haunted—and haunting—tales.

The ghost story is perhaps the oldest of all the supernatural literary genres and has captured the imagination of almost every writer to put pen to the page. Here, Edgar Award-winning editor Otto Penzler has followed his keen sense of the supernatural to collect the most chilling and uncanny tales in the canon. These spectral stories span more than a hundred years, from modern-day horrors by Joyce Carol Oates, Chet Williamson and Andrew Klavan, to pulp yarns from August Derleth, Greye La Spina, and M. L. Humphreys, to the atmospheric Victorian tales of Rudyard Kipling, Edith Wharton, and H. P. Lovecraft, not to mention modern works by the likes of Donald E. Westlake and Isaac Asimov that are already classics. Some of these stories have haunted the canon for a century, while others are making their first ghoulish appearance  in book form.  Whether you prefer possessive poltergeists, awful apparitions, or friendly phantoms, these stories are guaranteed to thrill you, tingle the spine, or tickle the funny bone, and keep you turning the pages with fearful delight.

Including such classics as “The Monkey’s Paw” and “The Open Window” and eerie vintage illustrations, and also featuring haunted mansions, midnight frights, lovers from beyond the grave, rapping, tapping, wailing shades, and ghosts, ghouls, and specters galore! "These are superb yarns of suspense, written in terse, hardboiled prose."

"The stories that make up The Rajah From Hell possess an added appeal. As Dashiell Hammett did in The Maltese Falcon, Bedford-Jones has taken a basic storyline that's pure pulp—Mysterious, sinister Indians! Obscure murder methods! A vengeance quest that lasts for years!—and couched it in modern, realistic terms, producing a highly entertaining amalgam. Take a look and you'll see what I mean. I think you'll be thoroughly entertained."—James Reasoner from his introduction.

Blogging Sax Rohmer’s THE MASK OF FU MANCHU – Part One - Now Online!
Sax Rohmer’s The Mask of Fu Manchu was originally serialized in Collier’s from May 7 to July 23, 1932. It was published in book form later that year by Doubleday in the US and the following year by Cassell in the UK. It became the most successful book in the series, thanks to MGM’s cult classic film version, starring Boris Karloff and Myrna Loy, that made it into theaters later that same year. Paramount’s option on the character had been exhausted after three pictures and one short starring Warner Oland as the Devil Doctor. The Paramount series had been responsible for Rohmer’s decision to revive the character with Daughter of Fu Manchu. The Mask of Fu Manchu served as a direct sequel and was again narrated by Shan Greville.

Jane: The Woman Who Loved Tarzan
Arriving in bookstores and comic shops September 18!

It’s set in 1912 and it’s fiction, so I suppose it could be considered historical fiction.  But it was written (with the full authorization and support of the Edgar Rice Burroughs Estate) as a Tarzan classic.  It's the first novel in the ERB Tarzan franchise to be penned by a woman, and the first of the series written from Jane’s point of view.  It crosses several genres (adventure, sci-fi/fantasy, romance, and women’s literature), but at its heart it is, like all my other books, the story of a strong, fabulous woman who stands tall under extraordinary circumstances."

Meteor House - Coming soon!
The Abnormalities of Stringent Strange by Rhys Hughes

The world has never seen an aviator quite like Stringent Strange. Half man, half ape, half badly added fraction, he can fly anything with wings and many things without. Under the mentorship of the unorthodox genius Professor Tobias Crinkle, our hairy hero soon gets much more than he bargains for when he finds himself up against a fiendish Nazi plot to invade and conquer America before the war has even begun!

Fortunately there exists an invention that can help him fight back against the warlike scoundrels, but the consequences of using it will propel him into even greater peril, into an alternative future where the themes and tropes of early magazine science fiction are menacingly real and coexist in perfect disharmony! Into a bracing reality where the only weapons he can rely on are the three special abnormalities he was born with…

Come and join Stringent Strange in a stupendous, mysterious, inventive adventure set in a far-flung time When Pulps Collide!

Rhys Hughes is the acclaimed cult author of 20 books and more than 600 short stories. His work has been highly praised by Michael Moorcock, Michael Bishop, Mike Mignola and possibly other Michaels too. His first book, Worming the Harpy, was published in 1995 and achieved massive critical acclaim for its inventiveness and originality. Since then he has continued to experiment with science fiction, fantasy, fables, whimsy, humour, and metafiction with increasing success. Half of him is too clever by half; the other half does what it can to normalize the total.

Ordering the book
The world has never seen a publishing event quite like this.
There are three ways you can purchase a Signed Limited Edition of The Abnormalities of Stringent Strange.

1. Preorder the book and not only will you get a copy of this signed limited edition, but your name will appear in the book! Just as Meteor House did with Exiles of Kho we are giving our readers a chance to be linked with our books forever as a thank you for helping to make them possible.

2. Bid in the auction running now from September 10th – September 16th to appear in the book as a character! The top six bidders will be written into a scene, and not just any scene…the winners of the auction will appear as gladiators in an arena fighting to the death! And how is this for an incentive, the higher you bid, the longer you live!

3. Following the auction, for an extra $15 fee the author will write you into a deleted scene. This scene will not appear in the book, but will be printed out and mailed with your copy of the book. While all of the deleted scenes would have appeared in the same place in the novel, each scene will be unique and written especially for you. Just as with the auction, this scene will depict your death in the gladiatorial arena as you are killed off by an author! Click here to read an example.

A portion of the proceeds from both the auction and the deleted scenes will be given to Animal Aid, the UK’s largest animal right’s group. So, being impaled on a sword, trident, javelin, axe, or any other weapon Rhys comes up with, will do some good beyond your personal entertainment.

The Signed Limited Edition of The Abnormalities of Stringent Strange is only $25 plus shipping!

In his stories with a musical background, you'll feel the beat of the music taken from the pages of Boeckman's own life experiences as a horn man.

The Big Book of Ghost Stories
Vintage Crime/Black Lizard Original

Edited by Otto Penzler

Coming September 18!

THE FUTURE CITY by Alain Le Drimeur
adapted by Brian Stableford

The Future City signed "Alain le Drimeur" (a Frenchification of "Alan the Dreamer") was published in 1890, probably inspired by Edward Bellamy's best-selling Looking Backward, 2000-1887.

The Future City postulates that the Conservatives left France in 1891 to emigrate en masse to the island of La Réunion, where they established a Roman Catholic kingdom that deliberately cut itself off from the homeland for a century. The book begins in the early years of the 21st century when two young men from the island decide to discover what happened to France since it was abandoned to secularist Republicans. The result is not a straightforward future projection so much as a kind of anticipatory alternative history.

The Future City is a profound and interesting text, one of the most significant contributions to the French futuristic fiction of its era.

Félicien Champsaur's Ouha, King of the Apes (1923) is the thematic "missing link" between Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan of the Apes (1912) and Edgar Wallace's King Kong (1933). In it, Ouha, an exceptional ape from the jungles of Borneo, is educated and transformed into the "Napoleon of Apes" by a well-meaning American scientist. But tragically, Ouha eventually falls victim to a "Beauty and the Beast" doomed romance.

There is an archetypal quality to the character of Ouha, as there is to Tarzan and King Kong; if he is no more plausible than Jules Lermina's To-Ho, he is no less relevant as a specter at the feast of civilization and modern morality.

Blogging Sax Rohmer’s The Adventures of Nayland Smith - Now Online!
Sir Denis Nayland Smith is the largely unsung protagonist of all of Sax Rohmer’s novels and stories featuring the notorious Dr. Fu Manchu. The brilliant Chinese criminal genius constantly overshadowed the stalwart British subject who did his best to route his megalomaniacal schemes over the course of thirteen novels and four shorter works published between 1912 and 1959. The legendary villain overshadowed Sir Denis to such a degree that many readers were unaware that the author showcased Smith without his customary nemesis in three short stories published between 1920 and 1932.

Now available!

BLOOD ‘N’ THUNDER’S CLIFFHANGER CLASSICS, also available at PulpFest, collects 20 informative essays that originally appeared in the pages of BNT and deal with the great movie serials. There are no gushy, repetitive fanboy puff-pieces in this book; each essay is the product of solid research and interviews with the actors, writers and directors involved.

Titles covered at length include THE IRON CLAW (1916), PATRIA (1917), THE GREEN ARCHER (1925), THE HOUSE WITHOUT A KEY (1926), JUNGLE MYSTERY (1932), THE RED RIDER (1934), NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN (1935), TIM TYLER’S LUCK (1937), SECRET OF TREASURE ISLAND (1938), THE LONE RANGER (1938), THE SHADOW (1940), DRUMS OF FU MANCHU (1940), and DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST (1943). Serial performers and technicians interviewed specifically for these articles (over a period of several decades) include Kay Aldridge, Henry Brandon, Herman Brix, Yakima Canutt, George DeNormand, Rose Hobart, Iris Meredith, Cecilia Parker, Barry Shipman, Frank Leon Smith, Frankie Thomas, and William Witney.

Nearly 100,000 words long and over 300 pages, the book is illustrated with two lengthy galleries including dozens of rare stills, posters and lobby cards from the serials under discussion.

James Bond - Daniel Craig Set for at Least Two More James Bond Films!
Daniel Craig will play James Bond in at least five films in the EON Productions series, MI6 can confirm. He has already completed shooting on his third outing, "Skyfall", which will open nationwide in the UK on October 26th. His remaining contracted fourth and fifth films will be the 24th and 25th movies in the official series respectively.

Sony Pictures, who through a new co-financing deal with MGM, are also set to continue their relationship that started with "Casino Royale" in to Bond 24. Exiles of Kho - A Tale of Lost Khokarsa by Christopher Paul Carey

Hundreds of years before the hero Hadon sailed forth from his shining city of gold and jewels upon his legendary adventures, the heroine-priestess Lupoeth set out upon the decree of the oracle to discover a new land upon the untamed shores of ancient Africa’s southern sea. But Lupoeth finds herself little prepared for the trials ahead, as well as those that follow upon her heels—for the jealous queen who wants her rival banished has appointed a worshiper of the sun god with a criminal past as the expedition’s priest, hoping to undermine the mission and seal its doom.

Now, lost in the deep jungle, Lupoeth must fight to keep her ill-equipped band of followers alive in the face of deadly beasts, savage Neanderthals, and conspiring enemies. Soon she finds the most accursed deity of her people’s faith, exiled from the empire by the Great Goddess Kho Herself, may be her only ally in this wild land. But Sahhindar, the god of Time and bronze, has a mysterious agenda of his own—one that Lupoeth fears might spell doom not only for her expedition, but for the entire world…

This limited edition novella will be signed by the author, Christopher Paul Carey, coauthor with Philip José Farmer of the third novel in the Khokarsa series. The print run will be determined by the number of preorders we receive by June 30, 2012. A very limited number of copies beyond the preorders will be printed.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Radio Archives
Will Murray's Pulp eBook Classics
eBook Upgrade Announcement!

Radio Archives is very proud to announce that we have Upgraded all of our Pulp eBooks,
and you can upgrade the eBooks you have purchased from Radio Archives for FREE.

For the last four months a team of 35 people working around the clock under the leadership of John Olsen have upgraded every one of the Will Murray's Pulp Classics eBooks.

What did we do? We made the eBooks look better by polishing the formatting, making the graphics crisper, and a new Table of Contents when you open the book just like in a pulp magazine. Other improvements include putting the front cover at the beginning of the book.

As part of the upgrade every eBook has been proof-read several times so you can enjoy these wonderful pulp stories as they were written.

We made it easier to purchase by eliminating the zipfile. Buy a Will Murray's Pulp Classic from your iPad or other mobile reading device, and be reading within seconds. There is no need for a desktop computer.

When you see the Radio Archives brand on a product, you can be assured of its excellence.

What is the Total Pulp Experience? Look for the Total Pulp Experience graphic on the cover of all the Popular Publication pulp eBooks where we have added every story, every editorial, and every column of the original pulp magazine including the letter column. Radio Archives is all about preservation. What better way to preserve these great pulp Magazines than by reprinting everything? We know you wouldn't want to read an incomplete book.

“We’ve decided,” stated Will Murray, “that from now on, most Will Murray Pulp Classics eBook will contain every story, editorial feature and even the letter columns from the original pulp magazine. Previously, if we reprinted the lead novel from the October, 1934 issue of The Spider that was all you got—that juicy story. Going forward, we’re giving you the back-of-the-book short stories too. We do leave out the ads.”

Murray explains this in terms of the stories the line has already become known for putting in eBook format. “This means that with the Spider eBooks, you’ll also receive the popular Doc Turner stories by Arthur Leo Zagat and Emile Tepperman’s Masked Marksman backup series. Since both pulpsters also ghosted the lead Spider novels, this makes sense. On Operator #5, we’ll be including Zagat’s Red Finger stories where applicable.”

Reasons for this change are numerous, including providing more stories and bringing great, lesser known stories and characters back to a pulp-hungry public after decades. Murray noted, “With the growing interest in pulp eBooks, RadioArchives.com is simply doing what it has always done, going back to its Old Time Radio roots: Innovate. Improving the product is something Radio Archives has always striven to do. The new Total Pulp Experience eBooks means that the customer will get everything worthwhile that can be culled from a given magazine. That’s the appeal. Of course, our anthologies like “The Moon Pool and Other Wonders” are a different deal.”

Bringing the Total Pulp Experience to Will Murray’s Pulp Classics eBooks by including the additional stories from the original Pulps will give readers a better sense and experience for what it was like to read a complete magazine right off the rack.

For those of you who have purchased eBooks already in the smaller size will not be left behind. Customers who have purchased the previous eBooks will be able to upgrade to the new versions at no additional cost. “The exciting part for me,” said Will Murray, “is that Radio Archives automatically upgrades my Will Murray Pulp Classics eBooks as it converts them. Every customer will receive the same courtesy at no cost. There will be no orphaned customers at Will Murray’s Pulp Classics!”

Will further said “This was Tom Brown’s brainstorm. I give him full credit. It’s part of his vision to remain current through constant innovation and the need to stay on top of the ever-evolving technology. The same thinking that inspired Tom to offer our original versions in multiple formats so that customers did not have to repurchase any eBook should he change devices, or the devices themselves change, compelled him decide to implement this idea. No purchaser suggested it. No one complained over the lack of short stories in The Spider. But Tom decided that their absence needed to be rectified. Me, I just stay out of his way.”

If you have already purchased Will Murray’s Pulp Classic Ebooks all you need to do is send an email to Service@RadioArchives.com and we will send you instructions on how to upgrade. You will be able to upgrade all of your eBooks in just a few short days from now. Send your email today and be among the first to be upgraded.

The Spider #21: Hordes of the Red Butcher
A horde of shaggy-browed, blood-hungry madmen with uncouth, primitive weapons, with unlimited vitality and bottomless ferocity, are hewing a path of terror and destruction through the very centers of civilized America — organized and directed by a passion-mad, money-lusting arch-criminal whose devilish cunning has trapped even the Spider, Master of Men, sole champion of outraged humanity, in a net from which, apparently, there is no escape. The Spider #23: Master of the Death-Madness

By water, fire, steel and lead they tried eagerly to hurl themselves into oblivion — into the greedy arms of Anubis, grim Egyptian deity of death! Richard Wentworth, who defended humanity in the guise of the dread Spider, recognized the suicide-mania immediately as an extremely cunning attack by the master-brains of the international underworld. Yet when his fellow men needed his protection more than ever before, the Spider lay gravely wounded, ruthlessly harried by Law and Criminal, while his beloved Nita, fortified by her courageous love, went forth to prove she was indeed the Spider's mate! Dr Yen Sin #1: The Mystery of the Dragon's Shadow

Out of the teeming turbulent East had come Dr. Yen Sin — saffron-skinned wizard of crime — bringing to the Capital of the West all the ancient Devil’s-lore at his command — and a horde of Asian Hell-born to help him spawn it. But Michael Traile — The Man Who Never Slept — had crammed into his own keen brain the means to cope with the sinister doctor. For he knew even the secrets of the Dragon’s Shadow and how to penetrate the yellow murder fog that had descended on the capital to mingle its blood-wisps with the mist from the Potomac.
