Albeit, a king being dragged willy-nilly to a remote island settled by his Great grandfather a century before.  In accordance to a weird will, he is being returned to the island to resume the monarchy. Go Hero, in conjunction with Executive Replicas, has revealed their next 1:6th scale "pulp" action figure will be Doc Savage.
 The man of bronze joins previously released pulp hero figures Flash Gordon and The Shadow.

Pictured is a first look (work in progress) at one of two Doc Savage head sculpts, this one representing his "Golden Age" look made famous on the pulp covers.
 The other head sculpt will reflect Doc Savage's "Silver Age." Both stunning head sculpts were created by talented Go Hero friend and artist Gabriel Marquez.

Go Hero is currently in discussions on a possible Doc Savage exclusive. If an exclusive deal pans out, this "Golden Age" look will be its head sculpt.
If not, the figure will ship with two heads. Full details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Conceived by Manly Wade Wellman and Weird Tales editor Dorothy McIlwraith in 1943, John Thunstone is a scholar and playboy who investigates mysterious supernatural events. Large and strong, intelligent, handsome, and wealthy, he has the typical attributes of a heroic character. He is also well-read in occult matters and has access to weapons (such as a sword-cane forged by a saint) that are especially potent against vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures.  In addition to the ghosts and other traditional supernatural beings, several of Thunstone’s enemies are Wellman’s unique creations. Particularly compelling are the the enigmatic shonokins, a race of human-like creatures who claim to have ruled North America before the coming of humans. Thunstone’s most persistent foe is  the diabolical sorcerer Rowley Thorne, a character loosely based on the real occultist Aleister Crowley. Thunstone originally appeared in short stories published in Weird Tales from 1943 to 1951 with a final short story in 1982. Wellman would later write two novels featuring Thunstone: What Dreams May Come (1983) and The School of Darkness (1985).

2013 Windy City Pulp Convention
April 12-14, 2013

Well, with the New Year fast approaching, the clock is ticking towards pulp fandom's first big party of the year -- the 2013 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention.  The con will run from April 12-14, 2013 (with the con suite opening the night of April 11), and will be at the same hotel as the last several, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL. The last two years our dealer room has had 141 tables and we're going with the same configuration this year.  Based on the last two years, we should sell out of wall tables in early January, and island tables in early February, so if you've been thinking of getting a table at the convention, please let us know as soon as possible!

This year's themes will celebrate the 80th anniversaries of science fiction and fantasy magazines (using as our starting point Weird Tales for fantasy and the scientifiction issue of Science & Invention for SF), as well as the 100th anniversary of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu.

Those themes will be the focus of our film programming, once again being assembled by Blood 'N' Thunder's Ed Hulse, as well as our art show, program book and evening panels.

If you have any appropriate art that you'd be willing to make available for display, please let me know.  And we're still looking for more material for the program book, which once again is in the hands of Tom Roberts of Black Dog Books (and if you'd like to place an ad in the program book, the deadline is March 5, 2013).

Our Friday night auction will once again feature material from the estate of Jerry Weist, but this time most of the material will be from Jerry's personal collection (as well as a few lots from the warehouse find that has been the focus of the last few year's auctions).  As many of you know, Jerry collected for condition, and there are some beautiful pulps among the over 1100 items that will be spread across 200 lots.  We're in the process of photographing and scanning, and have 41 lots currently available for viewing on our website and Facebook page -- check them out!  More will be added soon.

The Adventures of the 19XX: Book One Hardcover Reprint
A new kickstarter campaign has launched!

The first Adventures of the 19XX graphic novel is being reprinted with 140 pages of revised art in a new hardcover format! A new kickstarter campaign has launched to finance the first book in the series which was nominated for the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer award in 2011.

The 19XX is a series about a secret organization in the 1930s trying to prevent WWII from happening. They’ve seen the future and know the horrors of war are coming. Evil groups also know the war is coming, and they are doing everything they can to make sure they win that war. But what if the war is our fate? How can we fight against the inevitable? The series starts in 1933 and ends in 1939. Six books will follow the secret group of heroes known as the 19XX and explore the meaning of fate. Each book is a self contained, high-flying adventure, and future volumes build toward a global showdown between good and evil. Book One and Book Two are already completed and available in this Kickstarter.

Book One in the series was originally released in 2011. For this book, Paul Roman Martinez earned a nomination for the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award which is handed out annually at San Diego Comic-Con’s Eisner Awards. That edition sold out during the last kickstarter campaign, and since then, Martinez has redesigned the entire book with new artwork, over 10 new pages, a newly edited story, and a new Secret Files of the 19XX. The Secret files of the 19XX was originally designed as a half-letter sized companion book to the main series. The original had dossiers on all the main characters appearing in Book One and was about 47 pages. The newly revised Secret Files has over 84 pages of material. This includes some great illustrated short stories that delve deeper into the origins of the 19XX and some articles about gadgets, machines, and life in the diesel age!

Each volume will include new articles and information about the series as well as the history of Ranger Publications, one of the earliest companies run by Marvel Comics founder Martin Goodman.

Volume 1 contains the first three stories, uncut, in order, and accompanied by the original illustrations: "The Black Caballero" by Oscar Schisgall along with "The Avenging Shadow" and "Sapphire Mesa," both by William H. Stueber.

Pro Se Productions Partner and Editor-in-Chief Tommy Hancock announced today that he along with more than 50 other writers from around the blogosphere would help launch the Beta Test of Phase 1 of the return of Amazing Stories on Wednesday, January 2nd, 2013!
Amazing Stories was the world's first science fiction magazine. Published by Hugo Gernsback, the Father of Science Fiction, the magazine created the genre's first home and was instrumental in helping to establish science fiction fandom – the fandom from which all other fandoms have evolved.

The magazine itself ceased publication in 2005; in 2008 the new publisher, Steve Davidson, discovered that the trademarks had lapsed and applied for them. The marks were finally granted in 2011.

Phase 1 introduces the social networking aspects of the site and the Blog Team, more than 50 authors, artists, collectors, editors, pod casters, designers and bloggers who will address 14 different subjects on a regular basis – SF, Fantasy & Horror literature, anime, gaming, film, television, the visual arts, audio works, the pulps, comics, fandom, science and publishing.

Hancock stated, "Of course, with my interest in Pulps, a lot of my focus will be there, both Classic and New. But I'll also cover a few other topics salient to Pop Culture that interests me, including old time radio, penny dreadfuls and dime novels, adaptations of classics, and more."

C. M. Eddy, Jr. is an author primarily known for his horror and supernatural short stories. He began his career writing for a broad range of pulp magazines in the early 1900's, including detective mystery and weird fiction. He is best remembered for his work in Weird Tales magazine during the 1920's, particularly his infamous story The Loved Dead which helped save the imperiled magazine from bankruptcy. Born in 1896, he died in 1967, living most of his life in Providence, Rhode Island. During his early years he was a friend and confidant to both H.P. Lovecraft and Harry Houdini. He was a member of Lovecraft's inner circle of friends and authors, as well as a ghostwriter and investigator for Houdini.

Doc Savage 1/6th Scale Figure

Go Hero, in conjunction with Executive Replicas, has revealed their next 1:6th scale "pulp" action figure will be Doc Savage. The man of bronze joins previously released pulp hero figures Flash Gordon and The Shadow.

Pictured above is a first look (work in progress) at one of two Doc Savage head sculpts, this one representing his "Golden Age" look made famous on the pulp covers. The "Man of Bronze"? More like the Man of Gold!

The other head sculpt will reflect Doc Savage's "Silver Age" and can be seen on the Action Figure Insider website. Both stunning head sculpts were created by talented Go Hero friend and artist Gabriel Marquez (pictured below).
Go Hero is currently in discussions on a possible Doc Savage exclusive. If an exclusive deal pans out, this "Golden Age" look will be its head sculpt. If not, the figure will ship with two heads. Full details to be announced in the coming weeks.

Changes are afoot. They lead to a return to the world beneath the mist, and a deadly and unexpected encounter with a foe that is in many ways far worse than any dinosaur. Envy, jealousy, greed, fleas, and pyramids under the mist, are all part of this rollicking novella of the sort only Joe R. Lansdale could write. And don’t forget dinosaurs.

“The Menace of Mysta” was the tenth installment of Austin Briggs’ daily Flash Gordon comic strip serial for King Features Syndicate. Originally published between March 27 and April 25, 1944, “The Menace of Mysta” is a very brief episode that starts off with Flash and Dale and their nameless Elvin guide crossing Lost Lake when they pass through a patch of fog and become embroiled in a spider web. A giant spider rises from the lake to attack them. Flash dispatches the creature easily enough and the trio soon comes ashore on a strange beach where they quickly find themselves among the invisible kingdom of Queen Mysta.

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Captain Future #26: Earthmen No More
Captain Future… the Ace of Space! Born and raised on the moon, Curt Newton survived the murder of his scientist parents to become the protector of the galaxy known as Captain Future. This is one of the legendary "final seven" Captain Future tales. After a run of twenty pulp issues, the quarterly magazine closed. But that was not the end of Captain Future. He returned in a series of short stories published in Startling Stories magazine, beginning with the January 1950 issue. Edmond Hamilton, creator of Captain Future and author of the majority of the full-length novels, returned to pen seven more Captain Future stories. His style had matured, as had his original audience, and these final seven Captain Future stories are considered to be some of his best. Captain Future left the pages of Startling Stories with the May 1951 issue, but editors left open the possibility that Captain Future might return some day. True fans are still waiting. Until then, Captain Future returns in these vintage pulp tales, reissued for today's readers in electronic format.

Terror Tales: Arthur Leo Zagat, Book 2
In 1934 a new type of magazine was born. Known by various names — the shudder pulps, mystery-terror magazines, horror-terror magazines — weird menace is the sub-genre term that has survived today. Terror Tales magazine was one of the most popular. It came from Popular Publications, whose publisher Harry Steeger was inspired by the Grand Guignol theater of Paris. This breed of pulp story survived less than ten years, but in that time, they became infamous, even to this day. This ebook contains a collection of stories from the pages of Terror Tales magazine, all written by Arthur Leo Zagat, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format.

Hogan, who also wrote for G-8 and his Battle Aces and The Secret Six.  But after seven stories, the series was ended.  An eighth story "The Case of the Living Poison" was planned, but never was printed.
