2013 Windy City Pulp Convention
April 12-14, 2013

WINDY CITY LAUNCHES NEW PULP SUNDAY

For the first time since its inception, the Windy City Pulp & Paper Convention will be devoting a five hour block to the ever popular New Pulp Movement in what they have labeled New Pulp Sunday.

"Given the number of New Pulp creators and publishers that attend our convention, we felt devoting a day of programming to the energetic world of New Pulp was natural and would be fun for attendees.  Hopefully it will introduce some folks to the wide variety of material being published today under the New Pulp banner."  Doug Ellis, co-founder and promoter of the Windy City Paper & Pulp Convention.

To that end Ellis reached to out to several of his New Pulp contacts, amongst them Ron Fortier, Managing Editor of Airship 27 Productions and Tommy Hancock, Managing Editor of Pro Se Productions.  With a list of their colleagues planning on attending this year’s convention, Fortier and Hancock put together a program schedule that would include three panels and eight authors’ readings.  Joining them in these events are noted New Pulp Creators Chris Bell, Rob Davis, Joe Bonadonna, David C. Smith, Wayne Reinagel, William Patrick Maynard, David White and Terrence McCauley.

For the past four years the Windy City Convention has hosted the Pulp Factory Awards, given out by one of several New Pulp groups that celebrate the best in new pulp fiction and artwork.  “The creation of New Pulp Sunday is a logical expansion of the con’s support for all things pulp related,” said Fortier.  “We are thrilled at this recognition of New Pulp and promise all attendees a five hour block of truly wonderful readings and panels that clearly demonstrate the continued evolution of pulp fiction from the old to the new.”

Hancock added, “Everyone involved in the New Pulp Movement knows where the roots of what we do lie, exactly in the fiction that the Windy City Pulp And Paper Convention has helped preserve and promote since its inception.   It’s an honor for those of us who feel like we’re walking in the shadows of giants to be welcomed into the Convention program in such a way.  It’s also an opportunity to let fans of Pulp of all kinds know that the sort of stories they enjoy in the classic Pulps are still being written today.”

The complete, detailed New Pulp Sunday schedule will appear in the convention’s program booklet.

GHOST BOY - LOST COMIC HERO RETURNS
Now available!

Airship 27 Productions announces the release of their second title for 2013, GHOST BOY.

The during the 1960s America was locked in a tense Cold War with the Soviet Union, Ian Fleming’s James Bond unleashed a spy craze and the Beatles swept across American shores with their version of new pop-rock and roll.  Meanwhile American comics had entered into the Silver Age with the birth of Marvel Comics.  Every week new titles seem to proliferate drug store magazine racks.

Now Airship 27 Productions has dug deep into those long forgotten comic vaults to revive Jigsaw Comics’ odd-ball hero, GHOST BOY.  Created in 1964 by writer Art Croxton and artist Ric Sippo, the short lived series starred young Alex Conroy as the top agent of S.O.S (Science Operational Security) who is possessed with strange superhuman abilities. His best friend was an eight foot robot called P.O.P.S (Photoelectric Optimal Protection Sentry).

Writers Terry Alexander, Micah Harris and Andrew Salmon recapture the fun and magic of this 60s forgotten character and offer up four brand new adventures. As an extra bonus, Ron Fortier and artist Gary Kato recreate the origin tale of GHOST BOY in a special 9 pg strip which kicks off this thrilling collection all gathered under a gorgeous cover by Laura Givens.

Comics fans rejoice, GHOST BOY is back!

“Actually he never left,” explains Airship 27 Productions’ Managing Editor Ron Fortier with a mischievous grin in his eyes.  “That’s because there never was such a title and this particular project is in reality our homage to those wonky Silver Age comics we all grew up loving.”  Fortier goes on to explain the idea came about when the company looked into adapting an authentic 60s comic series only to discover the property was still under license.  “That’s when we collectively had this idea do make-up our own comic hero from that decade and see if could recapture the odd-ball exuberant charm those books contained.  Will let our readers judge if we’ve succeeded or not.”

Doc Savage: SKULL ISLAND
By Will Murray
Coming in March!

Eighty years ago in February, 1933 the Street & Smith company released the first issue of Doc Savage Magazine, introducing one of the most popular and influential pulp superheroes ever to hit the American scene. Doc Savage was the greatest adventure and scientist of his era, and while his magazine ended in 1949, he influenced the creators of Superman, Batman, Star Trek, The Man from UNCLE and the Marvel Universe—to name only a few.

While that first issue of Doc Savage was fresh on Depression newsstands,  Universal Studios released one of the most important fantasy films of all time. Everyone  knows the story of how King Kong was discovered on Skull Island and hauled back to New York in chains, only to perish tragically atop the world’s tallest  skyscraper, the Empire State Building.

As it happened, that was where Doc Savage had his world headquarters. For decades, fans have wondered: Where was Doc the day Kong fell?

On the eightieth anniversary of these fictional giants, Altus Press is proud to release the first authorized clash between The Man of Bronze and the Eighth Wonder of the World—Doc Savage: Skull Island.Written by Will Murray in collaboration with Joe DeVito, creator of KONG: King of Skull Island, Doc Savage: Skull Island is a new pulp epic.

The story opens when Doc returns from his Fortress of Solitude in the North Pole to discover the cold corpse of Kong lying on his doorstep.

“I know this creature,” he tells his dumbfounded men.

Tasked to dispose of the remains, the Man of Bronze then tells the untold story of his epic encounter with Kong back in 1920, after Doc returns from service in World War I, long before Kong became King Kong.

Doc Savage: Skull Island is a multi-generational story in which Doc and his father—the man who placed him in the hands of scientists who made him into a superman—sail to the Indian Ocean in search of Doc’s grandfather, the legendary Stormalong Savage, whose famous ship has been discovered floating, deserted, her masts snapped by some incredible force.

The quest for Stormalong Savage leads to the fog-shrouded  Indian Ocean—and Skull Island! There, Doc Savage faces his first great test as he encounters its prehistoric dangers and tangles with the towering, unstoppable Kong.

“When Joe DeVito brought this idea to me,” says Will Murray, “I knew it had to be written with reverence for both of these immortal characters. So I used the locale of Skull Island to tell a larger story, an untold origin for Doc Savage. It all started back on Skull Island….”

Doc Savage: Skull Island has already been hailed as “The Doc Savage novel that Doc fans have been waiting on for 80 years!”

Doc Savage: Skull Island is will be released in March, as the fifth entry in Altus Press’ popular Wild Adventures of Doc Savage series. Cover by Joe DeVito.

Blood 'N' Thunder / Murania Press
Coming in March!

Murania Press announces two new books that are about to go to press
and will be ready for shipping early next month.

The Best of Blood ‘n’ Thunder: Volume Two

The Best of Blood ‘n’ Thunder: Volume Two, a trade paperback priced at $24.95, reprints material from long out-of-print issues of BnT.

For more than a decade, Blood ‘n’ Thunder has explored American popular culture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries as manifested in its mass-market fiction—dime novels, nickel weeklies, pulp magazines—and such complementary storytelling forms as stage melodramas, motion pictures, and Old Time Radio thrillers. The first 21 issues of this limited-circulation journal are long out of print, and collectors have been known to pay as much as ten times the original cover price for back numbers that infrequently turn up on eBay.

A follow-up to 2011’s The Best of Blood ‘n’ Thunder, this deluxe volume reprints the finest reviews and articles that appeared in issues 11 through 21—more than 100,000 words of history, biography, criticism, and commentary. In these pages you’ll read about such popular characters as The Shadow, Doc Savage, and Sam Spade. You’ll read about such legendary pulp magazines as Adventure, Black Mask, and Short Stories. And you’ll read about such famous authors as Talbot Mundy, Dashiell Hammett, and L. Ron Hubbard. Like its predecessor, The Best of Blood ‘n’ Thunder: Volume Two is a one-volume encyclopedia for aficionados of vintage adventure, mystery, and melodrama.

Wilderness Trail, by H. Bedford-Jones

Murania’s second March release is the fourth volume in our Classic Pulp Reprints series: Wilderness Trail, by H. Bedford-Jones. Also published in trade-paperback format, it contains an introduction by Ed Hulse and carries a retail price of $19.95.

In 1810, the still-young United States of America continues its westward expansion as a national economy begins to flourish. But the country’s commerce is seriously disrupted in Kentucky, at the juncture of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, by daring pirates who strike from nowhere and then disappear into the wilderness. Captain John Norton, a young military officer working undercover, mounts a secret campaign against the buckskinned brigands, who are led by a mystery man known as Blacknose. Along the way Norton receives aid from such legendary figures of early American history as rugged pioneer Daniel Boone, future President Zachary Taylor, prominent naturalist John J. Audubon, and Shawnee Indian chief Tecumseh. Yet the clever Blacknose and his followers continue to evade their would-be captors.

The Wilderness Trail originally appeared in the February 1915 issue of Blue Book and was the first of more than 370 fictional works—novels, novelettes, and short stories—H. Bedford-Jones wrote for that distinguished pulp magazine over a period of 33 years. It was also his first historical novel with an American setting. Issued in hard covers many decades ago by the British firm of Hurst & Blackett, The Wilderness Trail has never been published in the United States as a book—until now.

The site is hoping for subscribers to keep it going and future plans call for more stories, more articles and there are a number of novels  we also intend to add to the mix.

SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT
Max Allan Collins
Cover art by Glen Orbik

COMIC BOOKS ARE CORRUPTING AMERICA’S YOUTH!

Or so the esteemed Dr. Werner Frederick would have people believe—people like the Congressmen holding hearings on banning violent crime and horror "funny books." And when the crusade provokes a most un-funny murder, Jack Starr—comics syndicate troubleshooter—has no shortage of suspects. Was it the knife-wielding juvenile delinquent or the naked seductress? Perhaps a frustrated publisher or an outraged cartoonist. Or was it a comic book reader...?

IDW Publishing: TARZAN: THE COMPLETE RUSS MANNING NEWSPAPER STRIPS - Coming in 2013!

IDW Publishing is proud to announce that the Library of American Comics will be collecting comics legend Russ Manning's classic run
with Edgar Rice Burroughs' King of the Jungle in 2013!

TARZAN: THE COMPLETE RUSS MANNING NEWSPAPER STRIPS is a four-volume series. The first three volumes will chronologically collect all of Manning's daily black & white and full-color Sunday strips from 1967 to 1974, while the fourth volume will collect the remaining Sunday strips, which Manning continued to do until 1979.

"The addition of Tarzan to the Library of American Comics amplifies even further that the imprint is the premier archival home for comic strip reprints and collections," says IDW's President and Chief Operating Officer Greg Goldstein. "Russ Manning's Tarzan run is one of the real highlights of the modern age of adventure strips and we are extremely excited to be the home of its long-anticipated return to print."

The series of hardcover volumes will commence May 29th with Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1: 1967 - 1969. Fans will be treated to the first-ever collection of a historic turning point in Tarzan history: when Russ Manning was handpicked by the Burroughs estate to return the strip to its creator's original vision. Manning put together a dream team of assistants in this historic endeavor, including future comics greats Dave Stevens, William Stout, and Mike Royer, creating one of the most loaded rosters in comics history, and a perfect opportunity for new fans to discover the adventures of Viscount Greystoke.

In his introduction to Volume One, William Stout writes, "Russ Manning was a natural storyteller. He may also be one of the most underrated writers in comics. His beautiful art is so captivating that it's easy to understand how it might overshadow his scripts. He was as adept with telling Tarzan tales in contemporary Africa as he was setting Ape Man stories in dinosaur-infested Pal-ul-don."

Reproduced from the Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. file copies, fans can expect TARZAN: THE COMPLETE RUSS MANNING NEWSPAPER STRIPS to receive the same critically acclaimed, award-winning treatment that Dean Mullaney, The Library of American Comics, and IDW Publishing have become renowned for.

Tarzan: The Complete Russ Manning Newspaper Strips, Vol. 1: 1967 - 1969
(HARDCOVER, B&W, $49.99, 288 pages.)
ISBN: 978-1-61377-694-0

Now available!
This is a textural reprint of the A. C. McClurg printing plates. Waldo Emerson Smith-Jones (one of the Boston Smith-Joneses)-a tall and thin youth with an ominous cough-finds himself cast ashore on a desert island in the Pacific, so primitive that it is still peopled by a race closer to the apes than to man.

Waldo has all the advan-tages of wealth, culture and social position. And yet, when rescue came, Waldo turned his back on it and sought the jungle again. Waldo had become a cave man.

Waldo's brain, clogged with useless learning, was still nimble enough to outwit brute strength. He lacked only woodcraft and pluck. These were supplied him by the slim brown Nadara, the cave girl, who called him Thandar-the Brave One.

How Waldo lifted the cave people ahead a couple of aeons in civilization, and earned the name of Thandar, makes a story rich in human interest and exciting action.

Johnston McCulley’s birthday, writings on display at Chillicothe Public Library

Johnstone McCulley, best known for creating the character of Zorro, would never see the full depth of his character permeating pop culture.
A display at the Chillicothe Public Library commemorates McCulley’s birthday Feb. 2, 1883, 130 years ago in Ottawa, Ill.
During the month of February, residents can check out a sneak peek of some of the items a Chillicothe Historical Society committee has collected for an upcoming exhibit on McCulley.

When his mother died in 1884, he moved to Chillicothe after his grandparents adopted him.
They ran one of the local mom and pop grocery stores in town. He attended Chillicothe schools and graduated in 1901.

A subcommittee of the Chillicothe Historical Society is planning a special exhibit on McCulley to be open to the public June 8 at the society’s Fourth Street Museum.
The exhibit will include Chillicothe history intertwined with McCulley’s local roots and his writings.
Additionally, memorabilia also will be shown, many of which is part of the Peter Poplaski collection.
The committee is looking for donations to help with the exhibit.
A fundraiser is planned for Feb. 23 with dinner and Latin dancing at Shore Acres Clubhouse. Cost is $15 per ticket.
Call Rachael Parker at 922-5916 for more information.

Eighty years ago, nearly to the day, the first issue of DOC SAVAGE MAGAZINE appeared on America's newsstands.
Lester Dent's words helped to coax readers to lay down their dimes on countertops across the country to thrill to the new adventures of this "Man of Bronze."
They're still doing something similar with today's readers.

Learn about the origins of the world's first superhero by visiting www.pulpfest.com.

Introduced to readers in 1886, Nick Carter would be born anew in 1933 as a hardboiled hero in his own magazine.
Appearing on America's newsstands in early February, NICK CARTER MAGAZINE was the second of the hero pulps to debut in that year, premiering two weeks before the more popular DOC SAVAGE MAGAZINE.

Learn more about the fascinating history of the "Little Giant" at
www.pulpfest.com and come to Columbus in late July to celebrate "Nick Carter and the pulp heroes of 1933."

2013 Windy City Pulp Convention
April 12-14, 2013

The clock is ticking towards pulp fandom's first big party of the year -- the 2013 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention.  The con will run from April 12-14, 2013 (with the con suite opening the night of April 11), and will be at the same hotel as the last several, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL. The last two years our dealer room has had 141 tables and we're going with the same configuration this year.  Based on the last two years, we should sell out of wall tables in early January, and island tables in early February, so if you've been thinking of getting a table at the convention, please let us know as soon as possible!

This year's themes will celebrate the 80th anniversaries of science fiction and fantasy magazines (using as our starting point Weird Tales for fantasy and the scientifiction issue of Science & Invention for SF), as well as the 100th anniversary of Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu.

Those themes will be the focus of our film programming, once again being assembled by Blood 'N' Thunder's Ed Hulse, as well as our art show, program book and evening panels.

If you have any appropriate art that you'd be willing to make available for display, please let me know.  And we're still looking for more material for the program book, which once again is in the hands of Tom Roberts of Black Dog Books (and if you'd like to place an ad in the program book, the deadline is March 5, 2013).

Our Friday night auction will once again feature material from the estate of Jerry Weist, but this time most of the material will be from Jerry's personal collection (as well as a few lots from the warehouse find that has been the focus of the last few year's auctions).  As many of you know, Jerry collected for condition, and there are some beautiful pulps among the over 1100 items that will be spread across 200 lots.  We're in the process of photographing and scanning, and have 41 lots currently available for viewing on our website and Facebook page -- check them out!  More will be added soon.

Among the highlights of the auction are over 80 issues of ALL-STORY, including 16 issues with ERB (including 3 installments of his first story, UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS), a complete run of PLANET STORIES in great condition, 11 stunning issues of REAL DETECTIVE TALES AND MYSTERY STORIES, a rare publisher's bound copy of OVERLAND MONTHLY featuring 2 stories and 2 poems by CLARK ASHTON SMITH (including his first published story and first published poem), items from the files of the Gernsback magazines, early issues of BLUE BOOK, and tons more.

If you're planning on staying at the hotel, the deadline for booking rooms and getting the convention rate is 5:00 pm Central on March 25, 2013.
You can book online at the website the hotel set up for us:  https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/5324
You can also find the link on our website and Facebook page.

We look forward to seeing you at the convention!

THE BLACK BAT #1 - Coming in May!

Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces that Black Bat #1, the first issue of an ongoing series reinventing the classic masked vigilante, will debut in May 2013 and combine the storytelling talents of writer Brian Buccellato (DC's Flash) and interior artist Ronan Cliquet (Green Hornet, The Shadow Special).  Bolstered by the character's appearance in Masks, one of 2012's best-selling independent comics, the pulp hero's solo series debut welcomes a host of superstar artists aboard for cover art duties, including J. Scott Campbell, Joe Benitez, Ardian Syaf, Billy Tan, and in his Dynamite cover artwork debut, award-winning artist Marcos Martin!

Black Bat brings back a classic pulp hero from the 1930s, a seminal character that inspired several well-known comic icons.  Now, Tony Quinn is a brash defense attorney for the mob, one who compromises his ethics for financial gain.  However, when he refuses to cross the line and commit murder, he is tortured and blinded by his gangster employers. But then, a fortuitous meeting with a covert agency gives him a chance to make amends, and Tony dons the dark mantle of the Black Bat in his redemptive quest to right the wrongs of his past.

Brian Buccellato, whose work on the DC speedster title Flash has gained rave reviews from fans and critics alike, was announced at New York Comic-con 2012 as the writer steering the Black Bat revival.  The red-hot writer eagerly shared his excitement about Black Bat's atmospheric setting, and the creative opportunities he'll explore there.  "Anyone familiar with my self-published work, Foster, knows that I enjoy exploring dark worlds, flawed characters, and redemption. Black Bat covers some of that ground.  At the same time, it's still a superhero book and isn't a departure from my work on Flash.  Tonally, I'd like to think it merges the gap between those two worlds."

Joe Rybandt, Senior Editor of Dynamite Entertainment, lauded the selection of Buccellato as the writer on the new series.  "Brian was with us when we first started publishing Red Sonja and has been an accomplished writer in his own right.  It's nice to have him back in that capacity writing Black Bat!"

"My personal relationship with Brian goes back many years, and he's one of the most gifted creators in comics.  In the New 52, his writing with Francis Manapul on The Flash is one of my personal favorite series, and the stories only get better.   Not only is he a phenomenal writer, as well as an artist and colorist, he pushes himself with new projects outside of comics.  I can't express enough how proud we are to have Brian writing the Black Bat.  In May, fans will know what we already know, it's going to be one of the best new super hero books of the summer!" states Dynamite CEO/Publisher Nick Barrucci.

With the current news that Roman Cliquet is joining the creative staff of Black Bat, the enthusiasm is clearly infectious.  Buccellato responded to the artist's selection, saying, "I couldn't be more excited to have Ronan Cliquet on board.  He is bringing a gritty, almost noir inked style that is perfect for the tone of this street-level superhero book."

Furthermore, the highly regarded team of cover artists for Black Bat - including Campbell, Benitez, Syaf, Tan, and Subscription Only Variant" artist Marcos Martin - will ensure that the pulp hero's new design (as conceived of by Buccellato himself) will best represent the pulp hero's entry into the modern age of comics.  "We finally have the perfect interior artist, five amazing cover artists, and a firm release date for the first issue," says Buccellato.  "It's all coming together!  This book has been a year in the making, so it's an incredible thrill to see it come to life as the covers and art start to come in."

Make sure to pick up Black Bat #1 in May 2013!

He painted, but he is best known for pen and ink – an uncanny artistic master of Erotica and Exotica who lived for decades in cheap hotels and borrowed rooms, acutely observing humanity while wielding pens and brushes dipped in wit and wry. With everything from children's classic tales to cookbooks to treatises on witchcraft to mainstream fiction to literature (including Steinbeck, Hemingway and Voltaire), the publishing industry relied on Mahlon Blaine often. His best book productions feature twenty to a hundred illustrations each, and he garnered several awards for design and illustration. His personal life is obfuscated by a combination of time's grime and his own desire for privacy and outlandish cover stories.

The author Roland Trenary has been collecting and researching the artist for almost 40 years, amassing the most comprehensive assemblage of information and artwork that one might imagine, given the elusive nature of the subject. The book includes a complete bibliography of published work and a biography that emphasizes the professional side of Blaine. Among the over 400 illustrations herein are rare photographs and self-portraits of Blaine and, especially interesting, dozens of published and unpublished drawings and paintings that reveal a side of the artist previously unknown and unseen.

This goes beyond either The Art of Mahlon Blaine (1982) or The Outlandish Art of Mahlon Blaine (2009) in presenting both rare published and unpublished examples of Blaine's unique artistic vision, with 350 examples not found in those two previous books on Blaine. And remember, unbelievably, he only had one eye! Bibliographically, here are 130 books and 80 magazines described and pictured that held Blaine's public outpouring, as well as ephemera and posthumous publication listings - information not available anywhere else.

Rangeland Romances Audiobook Volume 1
Read by Roy Worley. Liner Notes by Will Murray

Now available!

One of the most successful pulp magazines ever envisioned was Ranch Romances. Combining Wild West settings with the eternal struggle to snag a mate, it ran from the 1920s clear to the ‘70s. Naturally, other publishers jumped on the wagon train. Popular Publications did so in 1935 with Rangeland Romances. First editor Rogers Terrill described his approach this way:

“Over a year ago we started a new magazine with a new idea. We started a romance magazine in which the hero and heroine fight side by side, live an adventurous life together, experience hope and despair, defeat and success, and finally love together. We brought out a magazine that was true to life; that was about characters who really could have lived and done those things that the author writes about.”

In other words, Rangeland Romances wasn’t just another Cinderella love pulp. The formula—which succeeding editors tinkered with from time to time—worked like a charm. Rangeland Romances ran for a generation.

For our first Rangeland Romances audiobook, we’ve chosen to record the August, 1948 issue in its entirety. All seven stories. It’s a hoot.

Described as a novel of “Border Romance,” Marian O’Hearn’s “Fiesta Kisses are Sweetest” leads off the collection. It’s followed by a brace of fun frontier novelettes, Art Lawson’s “Cupid Rules the Roost” and Isabel Stewart Way’s “No Sirens Wanted.” Four sizzling short stories follow. “Salty but Susceptible,” “Petticoat-Corralin’ Hombre,” “I’m Claiming That Guy!” and “Gambling Gal.”

These are sweet yet salty stories of determined cowgirls navigating the complicated courtship rituals of ranches ranging from the Dakotas to the Southwest. Pistol-packin’ Doris Day in Annie Get Your Gun! gives you a good idea of the flavor of the festivities. High Noon, this ain’t!

Read by Roy Worley. Gary Cooper, he ain’t either. 6 hours $23.98 Audio CDs / $11.99 Download.

Terror Tales: Hugh B. Cave, Book 3
In 1934 a new type of magazine was born. Known by various names — the shudder pulps, mystery-terror magazines, horror-terror magazines — weird menace is the sub-genre term that has survived today. Terror Tales magazine was one of the most popular. It came from Popular Publications, whose publisher Harry Steeger was inspired by the Grand Guignol theater of Paris. This breed of pulp story survived less than ten years, but in that time, they became infamous, even to this day. This ebook contains a collection of stories from the pages of Terror Tales magazine by Hugh B. Cave, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.

Murder, swift and unseen — taking as its toll the most prominent citizens of New York, and marking with blood and horror, the trail of the mysterious Black Lotus. What was the purpose of this silent scourge, that stilled the innocent in sudden death? Val Kildare knew this much at least; that the fiend behind this slaughter killed not for vengeance, but for pleasure! Wu Fang is a Chinese criminal mastermind and scientific genius. With his hybrid monkey-men, he plans to conquer America. He is member of various secret societies and has spies everywhere. Opposing him is Val Kildare of the F.B.I.  His aides, reporter Jerry Hazard, archaeologist Rod Carson and newsboy Cappy, help him in his battles against the sinister man of evil known as Wu Fang. $2.99.

How could Clay Cavanaugh protect his sweetheart from a man with Satan’s gifts? In 1934 a new type of magazine was born. Known by various names — the shudder pulps, mystery-terror magazines, horror-terror magazines — weird menace is the sub-genre term that has survived today. Terror Tales magazine was one of the most popular. It came from Popular Publications, whose publisher Harry Steeger was inspired by the Grand Guignol theater of Paris. This breed of pulp story survived less than ten years, but in that time, they became infamous, even to this day. This ebook contains a classic story from the pages of Terror Tales magazine, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $0.99.

Rangeland Romances #2: "Trouble Trail For Two" by Thomas Calvert
Lovely Tess knew that big ranches weren’t built on promises and moonlight kisses. She wanted her future safe-guarded against the ravages of wild range life — and she poured her whole heart into that kiss she gave Dusty, a kiss meaning... good-by! One of the most popular settings for romance stories was the old west, where men were men and women were women. As many a swooning damsel could attest, "There's something about a cowboy." The western romance became one of the most popular types of magazines sold during the early and mid-twentieth century. $0.99.

THE SHADOW: YEAR ONE #1
Arriving in comic shops February 20!

Written by Matt Wagner, art by Wilfredo Torres, covers by Matt Wagner, Alex Ross, Chris Samnee, Howard Chaykin.

The Shadow is a character that has lasted through decades on the pages of pulp magazines, over the radio airwaves, thru the silver screen, and in the panels of comic books. Shrouded in mystery, his origins have been explored and hinted at over the years...but never fully revealed. Much is known of Kent Allard/Lamont Cranston's years spent in the Orient and Central America--wherein he gains his powers and purpose...but not how he first developed his persona as the Master of Darkness.

Eisner Award-winning author, Matt Wagner is joined by artist Wilfredo Torres in an exhilarating 8-issue limited series that will explore the dynamic events that first drew Cranston back to the States, how he first met his companion and lover, Margo Lane, how he began to assemble his vast network of agents and how he first
adopted the famous black hat and cloak as his alter-ego's disguise--all secrets that, up until now... only The Shadow knew!

In 1919 Street and Smith launched a daring different magazine, The Thrill Book!
During it’s short life it published a amazing mixture a adventure, weird, off-trail and plain ol’ Science Fiction.
Among its many authors was Greye LeSpina whose novelet, Wolves of the Steppe lead off the first issue and set the tone for the following 15 issues.

Beb Books is proud to announcing the publication of LeSpina’s Wolves of the Steppe and other weird tales from The Thrill Book.

This book collects all the stories by Greye LeSpina published in the Thrill Book as well as three other tales of creepy, crawling things. Stories include “From Over the Border”, “The Haunted Landscape”. “The Ultimate Ingredien, “The Wax Doll” and more. $6.00 for exciting tales of the Unknown.

The Whimpus, The Living Portrait and Wee Wullie, The Waster

Our second release this week is The Whimpus, The Living Portrait and Wee Wullie, The Waster, three “different” novelets from the pages of All-Story weekly. “The Whimpus” is a hunt for a treasure kept by a mermaid-like creatures called a Whimpus.  But it’s not easy to steal something from a creature that can cloud mens minds.

“The Living Portrait” is a testament from a man declared insane, but he argues it wasn’t him that did all those terrible things, it was a cursed painting he was trying to destroy.

“Wee Wullie, the Waster” is a comparatively light-hearted story about a ghost who can’t leave well enough alone when it comes to snooker.

Beb Books also presents two book length tales of the South Pacisifc.

Wild Blood

The first of our two South Seas adventures is “Wild Blood” our third reprint of the Hurricane Williams series (though second in sequence). Williams is determined to steal a schooner and take it to a remote island for reasons he refuses to give.  But he’s not above letting an Englishman and his daughter pay his expenses since they, too, want to go to this island, for reasons they won’t give. Will Williams survive all the skulduggery and secret plotting? Will the Englishman discover why Williams is nicknamed “Hurricane. $6/00 for a fascinating adventure.

King of Chaos

The other story ready for ordering is Johnston McCulley’s novel of kidnaping and South Seas adventure, “King of Chaos.” – A yong man is kidnaped from the harbor of Seattle and when he recovers from a chloroforming is surprised to find that everyone treats him as if he were a king. Albeit, a king being dragged willy-nilly to a remote island settled by his Great grandfather a century before.  In accordance to a weird will, he is being returned to the island to resume the monarchy. The current rulers of the island are naturally somewhat less than enthused. Suddenly the supreme ruler of the land is a hunted dog. Can he survive and reclaim his throne? Breakneck action for only $6.00

Blogging Sax Rohmer’s The Bride of Fu Manchu, Part One  - Now online!
Sax Rohmer’s The Bride of Fu Manchu was originally serialized in Collier’s from May 6 to July 8, 1933 under the variant title, Fu Manchu’s Bride. It was published in book form later that year by Cassell in the UK and Doubleday in the US. The US edition retained the original magazine title until the 1960s, when the UK book title was adopted for the paperback edition published by Pyramid Books. Under any title, it is without a doubt the finest book of the series in terms of prose and plotting.

Classic Heroes Publishing
ZORRO - THE DAILIES Volume 2
Don McGregor & Thomas Yeates
Now available for pre-order!

As some of you know, Classic Heroes is a small publishing house located in Germany. With generous permission of Zorro Productions we are now able to release our Zorro series "The Masters' Edition" and "The Dailies" in limited edition in German as well as in English.

To start printing, however, we need your help: As soon as 200 copies of "The Dailies, Vol. 2" have been pre-ordered, we can go to work. We intend to entice a group of devoted fans and collectors alike to keep the adventures of the black rider alive and to present you rare and new tales as well.

The good news is that we can begin with a rather small print run, which would not stand the chance of survival on the mass market.  All the positive feedback for our first edition of "Zorro - The Masters' Edition" shows that we are on the right way. Thank you very much for your support!

If you are into Zorro's adventures as much as we are, please help us make all these projects come true and spread the news around to fellow fans and collectors. We promise to provide you with wonderful, high-quality material for your collections in return.

Besides, we are cooperating with John Gertz, President of Zorro Productions, to realize a free Zorro Fan Club for our customers. More about that soon. So stay tuned! We only want to provide you with news that are 100 % guaranteed.

About our terms of delivery: To avoid unnecessary long periods of delivery, we decided to mail all of our books ourselves as soon as 200 copies have been pre-ordered and printed. Of course, you will be informed when to expect yours and get an invoice containing all necessary data after payment has been made to our paypal account. This way we keep an eye on everything and are able to ensure the highest product quality as far as fair and fast delivery.

By the way, we are planning to send all of our books by registered parcel, which means slightly higher prices but also much more safety and control. That way you can always see where your delivery is at the moment and when to expect your books. Please let us know what you think! If you prefer a delivery without registered mail, this is possible too.

Please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any further questions. We look forward to hearing from you and thank you very much in advance for your trust.

CLASSIC NEW PULP TALES by Tom Johnson - Coming soon!

Tom Johnson has decided to re-establish his old imprint FADING SHADOWS to produce limited print runs of some of his best and favorite stories.
The most requested title to date is “The Soul Stealers”, which was the biggest seller on Kindle in 2012.
Other titles to be released in print are “Treasure of Jur” and “Drums of Jur”.

CLASSIC NEW PULP TALES (preliminary title) will be a short story collection containing “Hunter’s Moon” (The Moon Man), “The Silence of Death” (Jeremiah Custer), “The Tower of Death” (Secret Agent X), “The Black Shadow” (Dorus Noel), and one other story that’s only been in eBook, for a total of over 70,000 words. The cover will feature The Moon Man. Due to costs of printing these paperbacks, I don’t want to print a bunch of copies that will just take up space in my closet.

Pre-orders are $10.00 per copy ($7.00, plus $3.00 postage, U.S. only). The printer suggested 5 ¼ X 8 ¼, which is larger than a regular paperback, but smaller than the 6 X 9 we have become familiar with. The covers will be on glossy stock.

FADING SHADOWS is going to print “The Soul Stealers” first.
Please contact Tom Johnson at fadingshadows40@gmail.com for ordering instructions and pre-order your copy today.
These will not be available anywhere except direct from Tom Johnson.

Nick Carter Detective Library – Issue Number 9
A Man With Four Identities;Or, The Little Giant's Greatest Problem.By The Author of "Nick Carter"

Originally Published October 3, 1891."A Man With Four Identities" is dime novel number 9, written for the Nick Carter Detective Library by Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey.
The emphasis is on detection in this tale, as Nick Carter is led from one clue to another as he attempts to unravel the murder of a bank guard and the theft of a package from the bank president's office. It is curious, though, that neither the bank president nor the owner of the package will reveal its contents.

Then there is the disconcerting fact throughout their investigation that whoever Nick and his assistant, Chick Carter, are up against, somehow knows in advance what their plans are as soon as they make them--and consequently seems to be three steps ahead of them at every turn. All in all, it is an engaging mystery, one that will keep you guessing what it is all about until the very last paragraph.

Famous (and forgotten) Fiction is a new site featuring familiar and obscure fiction along with articles, pictures and essays.  In the Writings section, we have fiction by H. C. Bailey (the first Reggie Fortune story), Carl Stephenson, Sinclair Lewis and a large selection of Kipling, including the complete Mowgli stories and "The Man Who Would Be King."  We've also added an article about Sleeman's An Account of Wolves Nurturing Children in Their Dens, that includes a complete reprinting of the work.

In Comics, there is an overview of Superman #205 ("The Man Who Destroyed Krypton!") and a look at a Steve Ditko illustrated story that bears a strong resemblance to a well-known story by Carl Stephenson. The Pictures section starts with a group of collectible (and some not so) items and is the first of 24 collections.

The site is hoping for subscribers to keep it going and future plans call for more stories, more articles and there are a number of novels  we also intend to add to the mix.
New material will be appearing on the last Friday of each month (which means we'll have more new stuff at the end of February).
In a few months, we will also be offering ebooks: on the site (in PDF) and at Amazon and B&N in their proprietary formats.

James Rollins: THE EYE OF GOD  - Coming June 25!

The crash of a U.S. military research satellite in the remote wilds of Mongolia triggers an explosive search for the valuable cargo it holds: a code-black physics project connected to the study of dark energy, the energy connected to the birth of our universe. 2013 Windy City Pulp Convention
April 12-14, 2013

Well, with the New Year fast approaching, the clock is ticking towards pulp fandom's first big party of the year -- the 2013 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention.

The 2013 Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship (ECOF) Gathering - May 17-19, 2013!

The 2013 Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship (ECOF) Gathering will be held 17-19 May in Morris, Illinois. Morris is about 60 miles southwest of Chicago, at the junction of Interstate 80 and Illinois Route 47. The Chicago regional chapter of The Burroughs Bibliophiles, The Muckers, are hosting. Artist Mike Hoffman will be guest of honor. Registration rate is still to be determined.

If you plan on attending, book your room at the Quality Inn, 200 Gore Rd, Morris, Illinois, 60450, (815) 942-6600. A small block of rooms is being held for us until 15 April. Book under the event code “The Muckers” for an $85 plus tax room rate, single, double, or triple occupancy. This is $10 less than their normal rate. If four persons will be occupying one room, the hotel will charge an additional $6 for the room. The hotel offers a free hot breakfast entry along with standard continental breakfast fare, as well as free wi-fi. The convention organizer recommends you book early, as the ECOF will coincide with graduation time in the area.

There is a restaurant/bar concession in the building which opens at 4:00 p.m. Drinks purchased there can be brought into the hotel breakfast area. Also, there is a Chili’s and an IHOP within walking distance of the hotel.

The dealers’ room setup will start at 8:00 a.m. on Friday morning. We must be out of the room by 4:00 pm on Saturday. The Saturday evening unofficial “banquet” will be from 5:00 to 10:30 p.m. at the Lakewood Trails Clubhouse in Minooka, about 15 minutes east of the hotel. A Sunday morning farewell breakfast will be at the hotel. For attendees who stay longer, there will be a post-convention get-together at the home of the ECOF organizer, with an opportunity to view her collection.

CAPTAIN HAZZARD - CITADEL OF FEAR
By Ron Fortier & Martin Powell

NEW AIRSHIP 27 EDITION

Airship 27 Productions is happy to once again announce the availability of its second Captain Hazzard adventure; Citadel of Fear by Ron Fortier & Martin Powell.

IN 2011 Airship 27 Productions parted ways with their former publisher and many of their titles soon sold out at distributors such as Amazon etc.  Eventually copies could only be found at various independent book stores selling for exorbitant prices.

“It was always our intention to get all our titles back out in these new Airship 27 editions,” explains Managing Editor & Co-author Fortier.  “Of course we have to juggle doing these reprint editions around our schedule for releasing new titles.  It’s not always an easy task.  Over the past year, many Captain Hazzard fans have written us complaining of the book’s unavailability at a fair and reasonable price.”

Fortier also notes that the remaining two Captain Hazzard novels that he has written; Curse of the Red Maggot and Cavemen of New York will also be offered in new editions as time allows.  “Obviously it’s our goal to have all of them up soon and we thank our loyal fans for their patience in this process.”

When scientists from all studies begin disappearing, Captain Hazzard and his team of adventures take up the mystery which leads them to a secluded city of wonders deep within Rocky Mountains ruled by the daughter of a would-be world conqueror.  The book is the first co-writing venture between Fortier and Powell, long time friends and features interior illustrations by Art Director Rob Davis with a stunning cover by Laura Givens.

Fortier in currently writing a fifth Captain Hazzard novel he hopes to have completed soon.

Baen Books: The Worlds Of Edgar Rice Burroughs - Coming in October!
Edited by Mike Resnick and Bob Garcia

Bob Garcia and Mike Resnick will be editing an anthology, The Worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs, for Baen Books.
It will feature all new stories using ERB’s characters and worlds, with one exception: it will feature Resnick's novella, “The Forgotten Sea of Mars”, which helped ERB-dom become the only Burroughs fanzine ever to win a Hugo back in 1966.
This will be the stories first appearance in 47 years.
The reason that the only Mars/Barsoom story in this anthology is a reprint and not a new story is because of contractual agreements between ERB, Inc and Walt Disney Pictures, the latter retaining a wide range of rights for the entire Barsoom canon. This anthology is authorized by ERB, Inc.

Contents:
“Tarzan and the Great War” by Kristine Kathryn Rusch
“The Fallen” by Mercedes Lackey
“The Forgotten Sea of Mars” by Mike Resnick
“Scorpion Men of Venus” by Richard Lupoff
“Apache Lawman” by Ralph Roberts
“Tarzan and the Martian Invaders” by Kevin J. Anderson and Sarah Hoyt
“Moon Maid over Manhattan” by Peter David
“The Two Billys” by Max Alan Collins and Matthew Clemens
“To The Nearest Planet” by Todd McCaffrey
“The Dead World” by F. Paul Wilson
“Tarzan and The Land That Time Forgot” by Joe R. Lansdale

Start the New Year with two new reprints from the Secret Agent X series and two novels of South Sea adventure!

Secret Agent X: SLAVES OF THE SCORPION
Secret Agent X: SATAN'S SYNDICATE
WILD BLOOD by Gordon Young (A Hurricane Williams story)
KING OF CHAOS by Johnston McCulley!

The New Year begins for Beb Books with two new reprints from the famous Secret Agent X series and novels of South Seas adventure.

First up is "Slaves of the Scorpion, the 32nd adventure of the Man of a Thousand Faces.

Weird symbol of ruthless greed and savage murder, that crimson talisman of the Scorpion flared its scarlet hue from skyscraper pinnacles. For the dreaded Scorpion had finally struck, seizing full power of the metropolis. And Agent X, greatest impersonator of the century, knew that he had met his match in a devil who could change his identity with the speed of light.

The Scorpion demands obedience from all gangs on threat of secret assassination. No one is safe from the Scorpion's sinister plots. Can the Secret Agent defeat a criminal after he's already conquered the city?

This is followed by Satan's Syndicate. Secret Agent X's 33rd adventure.

The weird coal mine Inferno, burning for decades, poured its ghastly flames into the stark night. It was a fitting lair for the awesome, implacable killer who sent such chill terror to the hearts of powerful coal barons that they formed a dread syndicate with Satan to save their lives. And even the skill and daring of Secret Agent X seemed defeated against so powerful a combine.

The firstof our two South Seas adventures is “Wild Blood” our third reprint of the Hurricane Williams series (though second in sequence).

THE CONQUEST OF THE AIR
Forty Days of Aerial Navigation
by Alphonse Brown
adapted by Brian Stableford

The Rocky Mountains stood before them, their snowy summits reaching an altitude of between three and four thou-sand meters. It was certainly possible to pass over them, but it would be necessary to sacrifice some of the gas enclosed in the hull, because its tension risked causing an explosion.

Within the history of the French popular fiction, The Conquest of the Air (1875) with its trip around the world in forty days in a steam-powered flying machine, is significant in terms of its prediction of the development of future aviation; as well as its contribution to the development of Vernian fiction.

Alphonse Brown was one of the first French writers to follow in the footsteps of Jules Verne, penning a series of "extraordinary voyages" relying on air power and futuristic inventions. He was one of the main contributors to the leading scientific anticipation magazine of the times, La Science illustrée, and the author of City of Glass published by Black Coat Press.

ISOLINE AND THE SERPENT-FLOWER
by Judith Gautier
adapted by Brian Stableford

One day, the beautiful Miou-Chen awoke from a long sleep. She was in a wild forest, lying on lotus flowers, a tiger the color of jade asleep at her feet. While she scanned her surroundings, she saw a young boy with shiny brown skin coming through the trees. "I have come to you by command of the Lord of Hell," he said. "The great Jade King admires your wisdom, and if your courage is unfailing, he will consent to let you pass through the gate of the terrible city of Fou-Tou-Tchan and visit his realm."

Judith Gautier (1845-1917) was the daughter of the great Romantic writer, Théophile Gautier. Isoline features an extraordinary heroine and recycles Sleeping Beauty with a sharp ironic edge. The Serpent-Flower deals with guilt and vengeance from beyond the grave. Too Late is a subversive pastiche of hallucinatory erotic obsession. Her Oriental stories, such as The Prince with the Bloody Head and The Boatwoman of the Blue River, are flamboyant reinterpretations of myths and legends.

Judith Gautier's works deal with the painful isolation of the individual and the destructive power of love. They commanded a considerable degree of critical respect and represented a refinement of the primitive Orientalism pioneered by early members of the French Romantic Movement. She made a highly significant contribution to the development of a literary Orient that was subsequently exploited by many later writers.

Blogging Austin Briggs’ Flash Gordon – Part Thirteen, “The Storm Queen of Valkr” / “The Wizard King of the Fur Men”  - Now online!
“The Storm Queen of Valkr” was the twenty-sixth installment of the Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip serial for King Features Syndicate. Originally published between March 24 and September 29, 1946, “The Storm Queen of Valkr” opens with Flash’s rocketship crashing down in the eye of the hurricane. Flash pulls Dale from the wreckage just as the ship explodes. They are rescued by a party of amazons riding giant wolves and discover their leader is Valkir, Queen of the Forbidden Kingdom of Valkr where they have landed. Once they reach Valkir’s palace, Flash is placed in the Queen’s harem. He soon meets her royal consort, Marko and her dwarf jester, Roki. At dinner, Flash offends Valkir by stating he is President of Mongo. She challenges him to a fencing match. When Flash bests her, her oversized house cat pounces upon him. Flash fights off the great cat. Later Marko confides in him that Kang’s rocketship has likewise crashed down in Valkr and the deposed Emperor is wooing the Queen and setting himself up as a rival to Marko. This marks an interesting departure from the established formula where the reader would expect the Queen to quickly fall for Flash with her consort becoming a jealous rival to our hero.

Books of the Dead Press - Now available!
John L. French’s Paradise Denied

Books of the Dead Press is proud to present our newest title: John L. French’s Paradise Denied
Paradise Denied is a collection of short stories by one of my favorite authors. It is available from Amazon and m Amazon and Barnes and Noble. The eBook is also available from Smashwords (www.smashwords.com)

About the book:
John L. French - a crime scene investigator for the Baltimore Police Crime Lab - has seen more than his share of murders, shootings and serious assaults. As a break from the realities of his job, he writes science fiction, pulp, horror, fantasy, and, of course, crime fiction.

And he does it perfectly. Because he knows.

He knows…

Table of Contents:
FAST EDDIE’S BIG NIGHT OUT / A NEW HOUSE / PARADISE DENIED / THE BEST SOLUTION / EFFECT AND CAUSE / PI IN THE SKY / THE RIGHT BETRAYAL / A SECOND AWAY / NOT WRONG AT ALL / SO MANY DEATHS, SO MANY LIES / SURPRISE PACKAGE / THE LAST CONVENTION / TISSUE OF LIES / CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION / CAIN / HERO / WHAT GOES AROUND

Famous (and Forgotten) Fiction - Now online!

Hard Case Crime - Coming later this month!

Inspired by the real-life 1950s witch-hunt against Tales From the Crypt publisher EC Comics, SEDUCTION OF THE INNOCENT pulls back the curtain for an insider’s view of the history of comics—and features more than a dozen brand new illustrations in the classic EC style by comic book legend Terry Beatty!

First publication ever!
In addition to his work for Hard Case Crime, Collins is famous as the long-time scripter of the Dick Tracy comic strip and comic books such as Batman and Ms. Tree

Three South Seas Novels
By J. Allan Dunn
Introduction by John Locke

Three early novels from legendary pulp writer, J. Allan Dunn, all South Seas sagas published in ADVENTURE magazine, 1915-16. These are the stories that made Dunn one of the magazine’s marquee names.

They are stories of modern-day buccaneers—who behave a lot like their olden-day counterparts—smoothly-plotted tales, with high adventure, exotic locations, perilous predicaments, motley collections of characters, understated violence and heavy romance—the epitome of pulp adventure of the era.

Includes: THE ISLAND OF THE DEAD (April 1915), Dunn’s rousing first novel; THE GOLD LUST (November 1915), which follows a treasure from the Sierras to an uncharted island hideaway; and its sequel, BEYOND THE RIM (July 1916), which cemented Dunn as one of ADVENTURE readers’ favorite authors.

6x9-inch perfect bound; 358 pages, $20.00

Enter the Phantom

In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated the 32nd president of the United States of America, proclaiming that “We have nothing to fear but fear itself.” Adolph Hitler was named the Chancellor of Germany, amid promises of a parliamentary democracy. San Francisco broke ground for the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. King Kong premiered in New York City and the game of Monopoly was invented. Prohibition came to an end. And the hero pulp revolution began.

The tremendous success of Street & Smith’s The Shadow Magazine prompted the return of the single-character periodical. The first of these hero pulps was The Phantom Detective. Launched by Ned Pines’ Thrilling Group, the Phantom was the alter ego of man-about-town Richard Curtis Van Loan. A veteran of the first world war, this moneyed playboy was bored with life until a family friend recommended he “try his hand at solving a mysterious crime which had stumped the police.” His initial success led Van Loan to dedicate his life and fortune to combat crime, making the Phantom “a name known and admired by the police of every nation.”

The first issue of The Phantom Detective was dated February 1933. It would be followed that year by other single-character pulps including Doc Savage, The Spider, and Pete Rice Magazine. The Summer 1953 issue would be the final number of The Phantom Detective. It was the longest-lived of the hero pulps, lasting for just over twenty years.

Join PulpFest in July for a celebration of “The Hero Pulps of 1933.”

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online!
The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university.

Will Murray's Pulp Classics #21

Dr. Yen Sin Audiobook #2
The Mystery of the Golden Skull

by Donald E. Keyhoe
Read by Michael C. Gwynne. Liner Notes by Will Murray

Now available!

Ever since Sax Rohmer conceived Dr. Fu Manchu, thriller writers have attempted to emulate his sinister appeal. No class of authors vied to out-villain Rohmer more than the pulp writers of the 1930s. The very best of these imitations was the work of top pulpateer Donald E. Keyhoe, later to make headlines as the retired Air Force officer who claimed that flying saucers were real.

Dr. Yen Sin lasted only three issues in 1936, but Keyhoe’s short-lived trilogy was a memorable attempt to given the “Yellow Peril” theme a mature and suspenseful treatment. The premise is a familiar one—a sinister Chinese super-scientist out to conquer the world. Pitted against him is the Q-Group, headed by State Department operative Michael Traile, who because of a childhood accident cannot sleep. Instead, he employs Yoga as a substitute. Under Traile are a host of secret agents, chief of whom is Eric Gordon of the F. B. I., who reports personally to Director John Glover—actually J. Edgar Hoover. Adding a dash of feminine mystique is Sin’s mysterious cohort, Sonya Damatri, while Eric Gordon’s girlfriend, Iris Vaughan, furnishes the series’ love interest.

Beginning with The Mystery of The Dragon’s Shadow and continuing through The Mystery of the Golden Skull and The Mystery of the Singing Mummies, the running battle between Dr. Yen Sin and his sleepless nemesis is a riveting roller-coaster ride of exotic torture, diabolic doom devices and sudden death that rages from Washington, D. C. to San Francisco! One wishes that Popular Publications had seen fit to publish the promised fourth installment, The Mystery of the Faceless Men…This series was that good!

Here is the riveting second encounter between Traile and Dr. Sin. The Mystery of the Golden Skull is read with pulsing intensity by Michael C. Gwynne. New York City is the stage. Horror is the watchword as Dr. Sin attempts to revive the secret society known as the Circle of the Golden Skull. What happens when Michael Traile steals the Golden Skull talisman—forcing Yen Sin to search for him?

Also included are a trio of Chinatown tales by Moran Tudury, Don Cameron, and Arden X. Pangborn. 6 hours $23.98 Audio CDs / $11.99 Download.

Terror Tales: J. O. Quinliven
This ebook contains a collection of stories from the pages of Terror Tales magazine by J. O. Quinliven, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format. $2.99.

What is the ghastly doom he brings with him to turn living men to rainbow-colored dust? Why should the flowers in his corpse garden have their heads removed, only to be sewed on again — backwards — by the surgeon mandarin? $2.99.

The Revenge of Margaret Brundage, 'The Queen of the Pulps' - Now online!

Margaret Brundage was "The Queen of the Pulps"—and is now something of a forgotten revolutionary. In the early 1930s, when pulp magazines were at their most popular, she forever changed the look of fantasy and horror with 66 steamy covers created for the legendary Weird Tales. Throughout the decade her work was ubiquitous, but by the mid-1940s it had disappeared from the magazine racks. And while she remains a legend among pulp fans for this pin-up horror art, outside the niche she is seldom mentioned.

LORDS OF FIRE begins a new galaxy-shattering adventure from the author of HAWK: HAND OF THE MACHINE and LUCIAN: DARK GOD’S HOMECOMING, and bridges the divide between those two novels and universes.  Here we see the fallout from the war of the gods in LUCIAN, and the growing crisis that will lead to the creation of Hawk and the other Hands of the Machine.  Futuristic armies clash, godlike beings manipulate empires, and the gateway to the Underverse of the Below is reopened, unleashing slavering demonic hordes upon an unsuspecting galaxy!

Plexico’s previous novel, SENTINELS: METALGOD, reached #1 on the New Pulp Best-Sellers List in December 2012.  “Nobody—not even Abnett and Lanning—does cosmic superheroes like Van Allen Plexico.  Nobody,” said Barry Reese, creator of the Rook and Lazarus Grey.

“I wanted this book to kick off the new “Shattering” saga with a bang—with action from start to finish,” says Plexico of LORDS OF FIRE, “and that’s exactly what it does.  I have no doubt that my loyal cadre of longtime readers will enjoy it, and I’m confident it will appeal to a new readership of bold Military SF enthusiasts who like a mash-up of high-tech combat and supernatural menaces in the vein of the Warhammer 40,000 books.”
White Rocket Books is a leader in the New Pulp movement, publishing exciting action and adventure novels and anthologies since 2005, in both traditional and electronic formats.   White Rocket books have hit the Amazon.com Top 15-by-Genre and reached #1 on the New Pulp Best-Sellers List, and have garnered praise from everyone from Marvel Comics Vice-President Tom Brevoort to Kirkus Reviews.

Tachyon Publications: THE APES OF WRATH - Now available!
by Richard Klaw, editor

From the jungles of Tarzan to outer space and beyond, the apes in these remarkable tales boldly go where humans dare not. Provocative and fantastical, this clever anthology delves into the cultural fascination with—and dread of—humanity's simian cousins. In "Evil Robot Monkey," a disgruntled chimp receives an implant that makes him more cunning than his cohort and humans alike; and a murder mystery unravels with the discovery of a hair that does not appear quite human in the classic Poe tale, "Murders in the Rue Morgue." Merging steampunk with slapstick, "The Ape-Box Affair" has a not-so-ordinary orangutan landing on Earth in a spherical flying ship—where he is promptly mistaken for an alien; and Joe R. Lansdale has King Kong setting a terrible example with booze and Barbie dolls in "Godzilla's Twelve-Step Program." Intertwining beloved classics with inventive new writings, this collection explores the lighter and darker sides of these furry primates and holds a mirror to man's deepest anxieties and desires.
