Between 1986 and 1994, Eternity Comics, a label of Malibu Comics, published creator owned, offbeat titles and none was more original than “Scimidar” first released in 1988.
Set in a post apocalyptic world of the far future, Jones & Davis’ series told the story of a beautiful, sexy mercenary who would do whatever it took to survive and protect those she loved. “Scimidar” pushed the envelope in regards to fast-paced, action orientated adult fare for its time and is to this day fondly remembered by its legion of fans.
“I was a huge fan of the comics,” says Airship 27 Productions Managing Editor, Ron Fortier. “It was the first series that I remember seeing Rob’s work in and eventually let to my reaching out to him as one comic creator to another. Now, decades later he’s our Art Director here at Airship 27.” Fortier continues to explain how he and Davis often talked about their past comic careers and those projects that remained special in their memories.
Thus “Scimidar” kept coming up over and over again. Eventually Fortier contacted writer R.A. Jones with the idea of his writing a Scimidar pulp novel. “I was ecstatic when R.A. replied that he’d love to do such a book and of course no one was happier than Rob.”

A team of experts in each of the ten major Pulp genres, from action Pulps to spicy Pulps and more, chart for the first time the complete history of Pulp magazines–the stories and their writers, the graphics and their artists, and, of course, the publishers, their market, and readers.
Each chapter in the book, which is illustrated with more than 400 examples of the best Pulp graphics (many from the Editors’ collections—among the world’s largest) is organized in a clear and accessible way, starting with an introductory overview of the genre, followed by a selection of the best covers and interior graphics, organized chronologically through the chapter. All images are fully captioned (many are in essence "nutshell" histories in themselves). Two special features in each chapter focus on topics of particular interest (such as extended profiles of Daisy Bacon, Pulp author and editor of Love Story, the hugely successful romance Pulp, and of Harry Steeger, co-founder of Popular Publications in 1930 and originator of the "Shudder Pulp" genre).

Coming this September will be a new book on the pulps, co-edited by Bob Weinberg, Ed Hulse and myself, called "The Art of the Pulps." It's being put together by the same folks who did the great "The Art of Horror" by Stephen Jones in 2015. The book is an illustrated history of the pulps, with over 400 cover images (and some interiors) reproduced. Bob and I started on this project back in January 2016, and when he passed away last September, Ed Hulse graciously stepped in to provide his expertise.
We broke up the pulp universe into ten genres, ach of which has a chapter devoted to it, as well as chapters on the great pulp artists, the great pulp authors, the birth of the pulps and the end of the pulps. While Bob, Ed and I wrote several of the chapters, we enlisted a Murderer's Row of experts to write various of them -- Mike Ashley for SF, Will Murray for hero, Michelle Nolan for sports, Laurie Powers for love, David Saunders for the great artists, John Wooley for detective and Tom Roberts for aviation/war. And F. Paul Wilson was kind enough to contribute the foreword!
In addition to the introductory text for each chapter, each of the genre chapters has two features focusing on a particular aspect of the topic. For example, the love chapter has features on Daisy Bacon, the legendary editor of Love Story Magazine, and on the western love pulps, which started with Ranch Romances, while the hero pulp chapter has features on The Shadow/Doc Savage and on the villain pulps. Similarly, the great authors chapter has a feature focusing on H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, while the great artists' feature covers Norman Saunders and Walter Baumhofer.
Each of the images is accompanied by lengthy caption text, which may discuss the magazine, the artist, the publisher, an author or something else relevant to the image selected. Beyond using material selected from our own collections, we need to thank Sheila Vanderbeek, John Gunnison and Michelle Nolan for helping us obtain scans of various rare pulps. I know I'm prejudiced about this, but having seen the layouts, I can safely say that this will be a beautiful book!
Although it won't be out for another six months, as of a few days ago, Amazon and some other online bookstores began listing it for pre-order.
This book will also be solicited in Diamond Comics PREVIEWS and available in comic shops.
I anticipate it will be solicited in either the May or June issue of PREVIEWS.

| Bernie Wrightson: October 27, 1948 to March 19, 2017
Bernie Wrightson, the prolific horror comic book artist, died on Sunday, March 19, after a long battle with brain cancer, his wife announced.
Bernie “Berni” Wrightson was an American artist known for his horror illustrations and comic books. He received training in art from reading comics, particularly those of EC, as well as through a correspondence course from the Famous Artists School. In 1966, Wrightson began working for The Baltimore Sun newspaper as an illustrator. The following year, after meeting artist Frank Frazetta at a comic-book convention in New York City, he was inspired to produce his own stories. In 1968, he showed copies of his sequential art to DC Comics editor Dick Giordano and was given a freelance assignment. Wrightson began spelling his name “Berni” in his professional work to distinguish himself from an Olympic diver named Bernie Wrightson, but later restored the final E to his name.
Wrightson is best known for co-creating the DC Comics monster Swamp Thing with Len Wein in 1971.
Wrightson’s many other projects include a 1983 version of Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein.”
He also illustrated the comic book adaptation of the Stephen King-written horror film “Creepshow.”
Wrightson was known for his vivid attention to detail and took on the works of such authors as Edgar Allen Poe and H.P. Lovecraft.
Wrightson had originally been asked by DC to handle the art for its revival of The Shadow, but he left the project early on when he realized he could not produce the necessary minimum number of pages on time, along with his work on Swamp Thing. Michael Kaluta illustrated the series, but Wrightson did contribute much to the third issue in both pencils and inks, as well as inking the splash page of issue four. Wrightson also produced a classic house ad for the Shadow series that ran in various DC comics.

Howard, August Derleth, and Clark Ashton Smith, all regular contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales during the first half of the twentieth century, are recognizable even to casual readers of the bizarre and fantastic. Quinn’s short stories were featured in well more than half of Weird Tales’s original publication run. This is for all those with an irrepressible love of art, King Kong, dinosaurs, ancient civilizations, assorted monsters, real and speculative science plus fiction, action, adventure, and other assorted knick knacks of imagination. With your help, this Kickstarter will delve deeper into the mysteries surrounding King Kong and Skull Island than ever before.
King Kong of Skull Island contains the long awaited expansion of Joe’s original 1992 creation, Skull Island. King Kong of Skull Island will open with The Denham Diaries, which will be followed by a novel in two parts: Part 1: Exodus and Part 2: The Wall, all co-written by Joe DeVito and Brad Strickland. The book will feature lush, full color interior art and an extensive sketchbook section written and lavishly illustrated by DeVito.
Creating the original Skull Island and its ancillary work, The History of Skull Island, brought into play a life-long fascination with everything King Kong. Conceived with the full support of Kong creator Merian C. Cooper’s family, these represented the first true expansions of the King Kong mythos since the creation of Kong himself–not only of King Kong, but of all the Kongs who came before him, as well as the forgotten human civilization that came to occupy Skull Island millennia before.
The new novel, the accompanying Denham Diaries, sketchbook text, drawings and details contained in this new King Kong of Skull Island book cover the entire ground-breaking Skull Island creation and exponentially expands upon it. Although Paul Chadwick created Secret Agent “X”, G. T. Fleming-Roberts contributed the most stories to the character’s canon. Fleming-Roberts also contributed to other series. This interest in slightly different crime tales probably contributed a great deal to Fleming-Roberts’ work on Secret Agent “X”.

Street level crime was not what the likes of Doctor Marko, The Ghoul, Thoth, and Madam Death practiced.
