Pulp Coming Attractions has been online for over 18 years!
It began as "Comics Commentary" in the pages of Tom Johnson's legendary pulp fanzine ECHOES.
It started in #42 dated April 1989 and continued under that name until ECHOES #100.

2020 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention
Cancelled due to COVID-19 threat!
Message from Doug Ellis:
In March 2020, we were able to move the dates for the 2020 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention from April 17-19, 2020 to September 11-13, 2020.
At that time, we had hoped that the COVID-19 situation would have progressed to the point where we'd be able to hold our convention this September.

We regret to announce that after consultation with our convention hotel, the Westin Lombard Yorktown Center in Lombard, Illinois, we have determined that it is not possible to hold our convention this year due to COVID-19. The next Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention is scheduled for April 16-18, 2021 at the same location. All dealer table reservations and membership pre-registrations for 2020 will be honored for the 2021 convention dates. The Westin has told us that hotel reservations for the 2020 convention will be cancelled automatically, but we advise that you confirm that your booking has been cancelled (after giving the Westin a bit of time to do so). Those members with reservations at hotels other than the Westin and all members with travel reservations are advised to revise their bookings.

If you cannot attend on the 2021 dates and have already pre-registered (or purchased dealer tables), please let us know (using the “Contact” option at windycitypulpandpaper.com) and we will provide a refund.
The 2020 show would have been our 20th, and we had plans to make it our best yet. We'll take this extra time to work on making what will now be our 20th show (albeit in 2021) even better!
We are revising our web site to correspond to the 2021 convention information.

Stay safe!

Airship 27 Productions
EL’ARIS
Now available!

Airship 27 Productions is thrilled to announce the release of a new science-fiction action adventure novel by Wayne Carey; “EL’ARIS.”

After the planet El’aris was first discovered, human colonists enslaved the alien Tz-en. Then they mined the world’s natural resources for themselves. Eventually the Tz-en organized a rebellion with the help of paid intergalactic mercenaries, among which were Tony Michaels and Jon Perry. With the financial backing of the powerful star-spanning Deltan Technologies, they were victorious.

Ten years later, Michaels is summoned back to El’aris. Now it is the Tz-zen who rule with an iron fist subjugating the human Elarans. A desert tribe known as the Skir’ka has begun terrorist attacks on the major trade centers and Deltan Tech wants him to find and kill their leader. His name is Jon Perry.

“Wayne Carey’s new book is like a trip back in time,” says Airship 27 Production’s Managing Editor Ron Fortier. “It recalls the late 60s and early 70s when Ace and Daw paperbacks dominated the spinner racks. Month after month some of the finest science-fiction books were offered by such luminaries as Andre Norton, E.C. Tubb, A.E. Van Vogt, Frederick Pohl, Arthur C. Clark, Isaac Asimov and so-so many more.”

Fortier recalls his teen years devouring those action adventure space operas. “Carey has captured the enthusiasm and magic of those galactic settings with fascinating aliens and truly memorable new worlds.” Artist James Lyle provides the black and white interior illustrations and Ted Hammond the cover with Art Director Rob Davis assembling the package. “This is the first in a new series,” Fortier concludes, “and we can promise our readers one hell of a fun sci-fi ride.”

Milo March #4: As Old As Cain
By  Kendell Foster Crossen, M.E. Chaber

Insurance investigator Milo March is under pressure to solve a classic whodunit in a small town. Athens, Ohio, is a place full of historic monuments, many of them still walking the streets. But now the excitement of Hollywood has burst on the scene, with a studio shooting a biopic about a rugged pioneer who played a role in the founding of Athens County. Descendants of the story’s hero still live in Athens, and are the owners of valuable antiques, books, and other heirlooms passed down to them from the early 1800s. The studio has arranged to use these gems of Americana as props, insuring them with a million-dollar policy. With such a large sum at stake, the insurance company sends Milo to check on the security measures at the little museum where the items are housed under guard.

The job seems like a snap—until a bludgeoned body and a lot of smashed-open cases send everyone into a panic. Among the stolen items is a personal diary written by Hanna’s wife, which appears to be an object of intense interest, or even obsession. Milo can’t imagine why a diary from the early 1800s should be so dangerous as to lead to murder, but he’ll have to find out. Was it a matter of greed, professional ambition, or something bizarre like a delusional fixation on the long-dead pioneer woman who penned the diary? If being unpleasant or eccentric made someone a murderer, then there was full cast of characters to choose from, including a pedantic historian, a shiftless ex-cop, and a couple of snooping old biddies, not to mention a scheming scriptwriter, a genius director, and a man-eating blonde starlet.

Murder wasn’t supposed to happen in Athens, Ohio, and the cops want these crimes to be solved fast. The pressure is on Milo to identify the killer before he strikes again—and to recover the heirlooms before anyone cashes in the million-dollar policy.

Milo March #5: The Splintered Man
By  Kendell Foster Crossen, M.E. Chaber

It’s been two years since Milo March sneaked into East Germany to capture a valuable Western deserter. Now, as a major in the Army Reserves, he is recalled to tackle a much weirder case. No one knows why Hermann Gruss, head of the counterespionage police in West Germany, disappeared behind the Iron Curtain. Did he defect voluntarily, or was he taken by force? Either way, Milo has to get him back before he reveals secrets that the U.S. shared with him.

Some say Gruss suffers from a dread disease and is being treated in East Berlin with the latest wonder drug by his friend Dr. Oderbruch. Milo suspects that Oderbruch, a former Nazi, is experimenting on Gruss, bouncing him in and out of insanity like a yo-yo by dosing him with LSD, then healing his “schizophrenia” with an antidote. Withholding the antidote is a handy way to squeeze information out of Gruss, and the drug experiments are part of a larger, fiendish project involving mind control of the military.

In his effort to gain access to Oderbruch and find Gruss, Milo ends up in the arms of the lustful Frau Beate, who plies him with Soviet champagne and vodka. Milo is reasonably safe if hangovers are the only menace. But when his disguise as a Russian secret-police agent is blown, he is packed off to a mental hospital. There he joins Gruss as the doctor’s latest guinea pig.

Milo survived a marathon interrogation by the Communists during his last mission. But this is different—the hallucinogenic effects of LSD threaten to splinter his mind into pieces. How will he escape the closely guarded hospital, bringing both Gruss and the evil Oderbruch back with him to the West? Milo’s quick-witted action and sheer nerve, not to mention his irreverence toward authority figures on both sides, make for the wildest trip of all—an insane car chase back to the Free World.

Milo March #6: A Lonely Walk
By  Kendell Foster Crossen, M.E. Chaber

Milo March, Madison Avenue insurance detective, is sent to Rome to investigate the double-indemnity claim on the policy of a young woman who may have been murdered. Anna Maria went walking on a beach, allegedly to bathe in the healing seawater. A few hours later she was found lying nude on the sand, with no apparent signs of violence to the body. An accidental drowning, says the medical report, and the family puts in a claim for the large benefit. The insurance company, understandably, would like to confirm that the death was indeed an accident.

Although the case is quickly closed by the police, the whispers of Rome will not be silenced. They insist that the girl was murdered, that she’d been consorting with VIPs at a wild drug party, that she was pregnant and the guilty man did not want any trouble. It is rumored that politicians made the police hush up the truth, lest a scandal topple the Christian-Democrat government, allowing the Communists to take over.

Milo is warned to leave the case alone. If he persists, he may find himself arrested, he may get orders from his own American Embassy, or he may even be killed by someone… or some thing. All of this may happen if he says out loud that a girl of no importance died because someone wanted her dead. But the question—and the shocking surprise—is who actually killed her?

A Lonely Walk was inspired by the true story of Wilma Montesi, whose death in 1953 led to a scandal that rocked Italy with revelations of corruption in high places. The real-life case remains unsolved death to this day. Not so Milo’s investigation of the girl who took a lonely walk—until Death came to keep her company.

Murder Costs Money: The Complete Black Mask Cases of Rex Sackler   - Now available!
By D.L. Champion, introduction by Ed Hulse, illustrated by Peter Kuhlhoff, cover by Rafael DeSoto

Author D.L. Champion’s knack for penning quirky series characters reached a new height with his stories of skinflint shamus Rex Sackler, one of Black Mask’s longest-running and most beloved series. Already a reader favorite for his Inspector Allhoff stories in Black Mask’s companion title, Dime Detective, Champion chronicled the offbeat cases of Rex Sackler, the greedy gumshoe who “could squeeze a nickel till the buffalo cried uncle.”

The Rex Sackler series allowed Champion to display his talent for sardonic wit and humor in more than two dozen frequently hilarious novelettes published in Black Mask during the 1940s. This volume collects the first eight stories. With an all-new introduction by Ed Hulse.

$24.95 softcover | $34.95 hardcover

Let the Dead Alone: The Complete Black Mask Cases of Luther McGavock   - Now available!
By Merle Constiner, introduction by Evan Lewis, illustrated by Peter Kuhlhoff, cover by Rafael DeSoto

The Luther McGavock stories are not your garden variety hardboiled detective yarns. These Black Mask stories are so rich in place and detail that they almost seem a travelogue of small-town life in the Deep South.

Having bounced around to just about every major agency in the country, Luther McGavock finally settled in the Atherton Browne Agency in Memphis, and his cases take him to small towns in the Tennessee hill-country. As an outsider, McGavock is our tour guide to this odd world of the Deep South.

Written by one of the most polished writers to see print in Black Mask, author Merle Constiner’s writing is vivid, his characters complex, and his mysteries deep. This edition collects the first four stories in the series. Includes an all-new introduction by Evan Lewis.

$24.95 softcover | $34.95 hardcover

Dead Evidence: The Complete Black Mask Cases of Harrigan   - Now available!
By Ed Lybeck, introduction by Will Murray, illustrated by Arthur Rodman Bowker, cover by Jes Schlaikjer

Quite likely one of the most hyped—and most mysterious—Black Mask authors to ever appear in its pages, Ed Lybeck made his debut as one of editor Joesph Shaw’s new faces in the wake of Dashiell Hammett’s departure. For Black Mask, Lybeck penned the hard-boiled stories of Francis St. Xavier Harrigan, a former gunman-turned-reporter for the New York Leader.

Though his duration as a Black Mask author was brief, his status as one of its greatest alums was certified by his inclusion in the historic retrospective of Black Mask, The Hard-boiled Omnibus. This edition collects—for the first time—the entirety of Lybeck’s Black Mask output. Includes an all-new introduction by pulp historian Will Murray.

$16.95 softcover | $29.95 hardcover

By Stewart Sterling, introduction by Will Murray, illustrated by Arthur Rodman Bowker, cover by Jes Schlaikjer

One of the most talented authors to be recruited to write for Black Mask Magazine following the departure of Dashiell Hammett, Stewart Sterling made a lasting impression on readers with his initial series character, Johnny Hi Gear: undercover police agent K-Five who battled gambling rackets during the Great Depression.

Never before reprinted, this popular series jump-started Sterling’s writing career which covered spans of time in radio, TV, and hardcovers, along with writing some of pulpdom’s most popular heroes, the Black Bat and The Spider. Collecting all 8 stories, along with an all-new introduction by Will Murray.

Micah S. Harris: The Eldritch New Adventures of Becky Sharp

Award winning author Micah S. Harris has published a revised and expanded version of his 2008 classic The Eldritch New Adventures of Becky Sharp in which the  winsome, willful anti-heroine of Thackeray's Vanity Fair meets the Cthulhu Mythos and other literary gems.  It is an enjoyable romp with an amoral wench who nevertheless has you rooting for her as she blusters her way through the Victorian world through to the early 20th Century.  This is one of the more delightful crossover compilations in New Pulp.  Treat yourself!

We also discuss the upcoming sequel to Portrait of a Snow Queen as well as the further crossovers with Becky and her daughter Anne in Jim Anthony, Super Detective:  The Hunters and Ravenwood Stepson of Mystery:  Return of the Dugpa. Plus lots more.

For the past several years I was converting pulp stories into etext to sent to Pulpgen for reprinting. And then one day -- poof! --Pulpgen was gone.
So I've decided to fill in the void, sort of, by preparing --at irregular intervals -- ePub anthologies I'm calling "The Baker's Dozen.

Thirteen stories of a particular genre trying for as much variety as possible. The first Baker's Dozen is
Baker's Dozen-Detective 01. Thirteen mystery, detective, and crime stories from thriteen different writers appearing in twelve different magazines.
There are stories by Arthur Leo Zaget, Paul Ernest, Bruno Fisher, Richard Sale, Robert Leslie Bellem, Frank Gruber, and six more. Alll for free, inePub format, and available for download at: http://www.mediafire.com/folder/p56wc0bxuidzr/Documents

Also uploaded this week are a number of dime novels and penny dreadfuls.Claude Duval was a charismatic English highwayman, active during the British Civil War.
A dashing and gentlemanly rogue along the lines of Robin Hood. We present two of his many adventures.

Claude Duval #2, a medley of adventures of him as warrior, romantic, highwayman and leader of the downtrodden masses in London.
Claude Duval #10 involves a plot to assassinate  King Charles I but quickly turns into a tale of a man hunted not merely by Claude Daval but by his guilty conscious as well. The writing of these stories is surprisingly literate for cheap entertainment.

Here on the other side of the Pond we present two dime novels of Nick Carter, the world's greatest Detective.
Nick Carter - The House of Secret is a amusing gothic thriller as unseen forces terrorize a young woman in her own house.Nick Carter - Gideon Drexel's Millions Man comes to Carter thinking someone in his household is trying to killer him. Carter comes to investigates and finds that everyone is plotting against the name. Two entertaining stories to amusing through these long summer days. And free for download at http://www.mediafire.com/folder/p56wc0bxuidzr/Documents

Finally, for the SF fan we post three different dime novels about steam engines shaped like men.
The first is The Steam Man of the Prairie by Edward S. Ellis (1869) Young,
Hunchback Jonny Brainard builds his steam man  and hired to rescue the partner of a mountain man who were prospector for gold and now are menaced by indians.

This proved so popular that publisher Frank Tousay hired Harry Enton to create his oown steam man.
This became the Steam Man of the Plains, published in Boys of New York in 1876 and reprinted in the Frank Reade Library #12 in 1892.
A dispute over ownership of the title lead to the creation of Frank Reade, Jr. by "nonname" (Lu Senarias) This time titled, Frank Reade Jr and his New Steam Man.
Each of these is a completely different and unique story.

The Frank Reade Library appeared weekly.  The fifth issue featured "Frank Reade Jr. with his Steam Man in Mexico. This has also been included as an ePub. These, too, can be found at http://www.mediafire.com/folder/p56wc0bxuidzr/Documents

The Best of Jules de Grandin
20 Classic Occult Detective Stories
By Seabury Quinn
Now available!

A collection of the 20 greatest tales of Jules de Grandin, the supernatural detective made famous in the classic pulp magazine Weird Tales.

Today the names of H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, August Derleth, and Clark Ashton Smith, all regular contributors to the pulp magazine Weird Tales during the first half of the twentieth century, are recognizable even to casual readers of the bizarre and fantastic. And yet despite being more popular than them all during the golden era of genre pulp fiction, there is another author whose name and work have fallen into obscurity: Seabury Quinn.

Quinn’s short stories were featured in well more than half of Weird Tales’s original publication run. His most famous character, the supernatural French detective Dr. Jules de Grandin, investigated cases involving monsters, devil worshippers, serial killers, and spirits from beyond the grave, often set in the small town of Harrisonville, New Jersey. In de Grandin there are familiar shades of both Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot, and alongside his assistant, Dr. Samuel Trowbridge, de Grandin’s knack for solving mysteries—and his outbursts of peculiar French-isms (grand Dieu!)—captivated readers for nearly three decades.

The Best of Jules de Grandin, edited by George Vanderburgh, presents twenty of the greatest published works featuring the supernatural detective.
Presented in chronological order with stories from the 1920s through the 1940s, this collection contains the most incredible of Jules de Grandin's many awe-inspiring adventures.

Have you ever wondered what happened to some of your favorite heroes (and heroines) of classic literature after the last page of their adventures? Did they quietly retire to play Scrabble or do macramé? Or did they have further adventures, as yet unrelated? John Peel opts for the latter – and reveals some of the hitherto-unknown adventures they enjoyed, perils that they faced and companions they discovered.

Professor Lindenbrock never did make it to the center of the Earth… or did he? Professor Moriarty plunged to his death after a clash with Sherlock Holmes. Are you quite sure of that? Did you ever wonder why the Germans never managed to take Paris in World War 1? Could it be…? Nijinsky took Paris (and the world) by storm with his dancing in the Twenties. And Stravinsky changed the sound of classical music with The Rite of Spring. But did you know that this almost didn’t happen? Biggles was the greatest fighter ace the British had in World War 1 – but when did he take his first solo flight? And why? And how did someone suspiciously like the Lone Ranger really come into being?

Return with us now to those daring days of yesterday – days of steam and shadows…

Journalist Joseph Josephin, aka Rouletabille, is an idealized projection of its creator, Gaston Leroux, and was originally conceived as a "rival" of Sherlock Holmes and Arsène Lupin. He "borrows" his prodigious deductive powers from Auguste Dupin, M. Lecoq, Holmes and Hercule Poirot, and solves the mysteries he encounters using what he calls "the good bit of reason." The Rouletabille series has justly become a classic of detective literature.

Martin Gately, author of the authorized sequel to Philip José Farmer's The Green Odyssey, has also written the Starblazer comic book published by DC Thomson and occasionally contributes to the British edition of the Fortean Times. His latest work is an adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Pirate Blood as a comic book.

Martin is also a regular contributor to Tales of the Shadowmen, where the Rouletabille stories gathere in this collection were first published..

BLOOD 'N' THUNDER VOLUME 2 NUMBER 2
Now available!

The second issue of the revived Blood 'n' Thunder opens with a special section devoted to Jimmie Dale, alias the Gray Seal, Frank L. Packard's World War I-vintage protagonist whose adventures in Street & Smith's People's Magazine presaged the Depression-era hero-pulp phenomenon. Award-winning writer, editor, documentarian, and pop-culture historian Don Hutchison makes his first appearance in BnT with "Death to the Gray Seal!", an overview of the legendary character. Then editor Ed Hulse offers "The Celluloid 'Seal'," which recounts Jimmie Dale's brief but tumultuous history on film.

Novelist andpulp historian Will Murray is back with "The Spicy Mrs. Schwartz," another of his fascinating examples of literary detective work. This time Will trains his attention on one of Spicy Detective's most unlikely contributors.

BnT presentsa long-forgotten short story by Richard Sale, prolific fictioneer who eventually became a Hollywood hyphenate (writer-producer-director) but is best known for his detective yarns in the Munsey pulps. Sale's 1935 "Mellow Drama" is a clever send-up of rough-paper magazines in general and hero pulps in particular.

The making of Republic Pictures' episodic epic Spy Smasher (1942), based on the popular Fawcett Publication comic book and still considered one of the finest chapter plays ever, is fully documented in Ed Hulse's "Anatomy of a Serial," which presents material gleaned from Republic studio files and first-hand interviews with selected cast and crew members. This 8000-word essay chronicles production from the 1941 licensing of screen rights to the efforts of exhibitors to promote the serial while it was in release. Nothing like it has ever been written by the form's historians.

That relentless researcher of all things Old Time Radio, Karl Schadow, contributes "Avenger Addendum," a brief article that supplements last issue's piece on the 1941 series that adapted Street & Smith's character The Avenger.

The latest BnT also includes reviews and reference material sure to be of interest to pulp-fiction aficionados. And, asalways, the magazine is profusely illustrated.

PULP ADVENTURES #36
Now available!

Another blend of new and classic fiction, embarking on another safari through the pulp jungle.

This issue features a rare story by the creator of Perry Mason — "Bloody Bill Obeys" by Erle Stanley Gardner has been lost since its original publication in 1925. It appears complete in this issue. "Bloody Bill" Sullivan becomes the unwitting "volunteer" in an illusionist act, with crime as the curtain call! A profile of the author precedes the story.

David Goudsward examines the complicated publishing history of "Werewoman" by C. L. Moore and "The Tree-Man" by Henry S. Whitehead, two perennial favorite authors from Weird Tales magazine, accompanied by the stories.

In the new fiction category, "Mona's Back" by Michael A. Wexler follows the trail of a hardboiled woman everyone would like to forget, if she wasn't blackmailing them. Codename: Intrepid clashes with another strange war-related incident in "Case Gray" by Robert J. Mendenhall.

Mystery, science fiction, and horror from classic authors such as E. C. Tubb, Charles Boeckman, and Earle Basinsky, Jr. New pulp fiction by Michael A. Wexler, Conrad Adamson; and Steven L. Rowe.

The Cthulhu Stories of Robert E. Howard  - Coming in September!

The Great Old Ones Return...

In the early twentieth-century, in the pages of Weird Tales and other pulp magazines, H.P. Lovecraft created the Cthulhu Mythos and offered it to his friends, creating a shared mythology for much of their weird fiction. Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan the Barbarian, was one of those good friends.

Fresh from dusty libraries dark with forbidden knowledge, these twelve Howard tales, bring Kull of Atlantis, Bran Mak Morn, and a steady band of warriors, adventurers, and scholars into the dark to face the Nameless and that which they left behind: Elder gods, nameless cosmic horrors greater and older than the gods themselves, ancient forms of life and worship from before the dawn of humanity.

These are the Cthulhu Stories of Robert. E. Howard

Elak, King of Atlantis - Now available!
by Adrian Cole

The Return of Elak
Henry Kuttner's classic sword-and-sorcery pulp hero returns in new tales from British Fantasy Award-winning author Adrian Cole.

Unlike Robert E. Howard's barbarous Conan, Elak's royal blood destines him for a life spent among courtiers, courtesans, and castles. But Elak spurns his nobility, preferring the dangers of the road to the dainties of the palace. In league with his comrades, the drunken thief Lycon and the druid Dalan, Elak turns his blade against vile sorcery, brutish creatures, and mighty warriors.

Adrian Cole reincarnates Elak with five meaty tales of sword-and-sorcery:

Blood of the Moon
Witch Queen of Doom Island
Revenge of the Sorcerer
Spawn of the Sea God
Sky Warriors of Atlantis
Whether you're new to Elak or have thrilled to Henry Kuttner's original stories, you'll feel the locomotive rush of classic sword-and-sorcery in the hands of a modern master.

New on Famous (and forgotten) Fiction!

August 2020
This month we continue with our overview of the Weird Tales writings of Julius Long, with the tale of a very odd dinner party, "Supper for Thirteen," reproduced from the October, 1934 issue of Weird Tales.

Also, just because it ties in with the Long story, we have also added a non-fiction article, "Death by Electrocution," by James S. Metcalfe. The article is a fascinating look at Sing Sing Prison of the late 1800s and, as the title implies, is mostly concerned with the electric chair and the conditions that condemned prisoners endured. Oddly, the article appeared in the December, 1898 issue of The Royal Magazine, but has a large number of period photographs.

July 2020
This month we present a tale of a summer rest cure that becomes something other than planned, as related by Julius Long in the pages of the September, 1934 issue of Weird Tales.

The Pale Man by Julius Long.

June 2020
This month we present a ghost(?) story by Julius Long, "He Walked by Day," that originally appeared in theJune, 1934 issue of Weird Tales.

May 2020
This month we present two stories that give you a chance to compare two authors' handling of the same basic plot.
First if Edmond Hamilton's "The Man Who Returned," a long-time favorite for anthologists, since it, like all goodstories, works on more than one level.

Second, in a continuation ofour reprinting of Julius Long, is a rarely reprintedgem, "The Late Mourner."  Read this one and savor the gentle and moving nature of the last three paragraphs, as this is one of Long's best stories.

April 2020
For your end of theyear reading pleasure, we present to you "The Monster of Lake LaMetrie" by Wardon Allan Curtis, as it originally appeared in the September, 1899 issue of Pearson's Magazine (UK).
It's a fun story involvinga dinosaur, possible hollow earth and the use of amachete as a surgical tool (?).  The illustrations by Stanley L. Wood are included along with a brief introduction by Bob Gay.

November 2019
Presenting another author who has been too long neglected, we have added The Julius Long Collection and it includes not only a biography of Long's life, but also his first published story, The Dead Man's Story
Although Long ended his pulp career as a writer of detective fiction, his first works were all in the horror genre and hold up quite well today.  Hope you enjoy it.

September 2019
We are happy to present a previously unreprinted story by H. F. Arnold, "The City of the Iron Cubes,"  as it apppearedin the March and April, 1929 issues of Weird Tales, including theillustrations by C. C. Senf.
Along with some additionalbiographical material about Arnold, there is also anafterword following the story, where wediscuss the end ofthe story, and why webelieve the twist at the endmay be thefirst appearance of an ending that, today, has been doneso many times, that it is considered the worst of cliches.

July 2019
Baroness Orczy wrote many different types ofstories during her career and "Young Muggins" shows yet another facet to her talents, as she weaves a tale of love, selfishness and self-sacrifice inrural England.
Our reprinting appears just as it didin the May, 1906 issue of The Royal Magazine, including theillustrations by J. Barnard Davis.  Introduction to thestory is by Dan Neyer.

June 2019
This month we feature Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's mummy tale, Lot No. 249, including the illustrations by WilliamThomas Smedley and an introduction by your humble scribes, Dan Neyer andBob Gay.
We've also done some behind the scenes work to makethe site work better...do stop byand check us out.

May 2019
Edmond Hamilton returns to ourpages with "The Man Who Evolved," direct from the pages of theApril, 1931 issue of Wonder Stories, including the Frank R. Paul illustration.  Intro by Bob Gay
Also, we found a 1953 comic book story where the plot was(*ahem*) "borrowed" from Hamilton's original and our unknownscribemanaged to condense the story down to a mere 4 pages.
Read the original first, then "Evolution" which appears as it originally appearedin Tomb of Terror #12, with the digital restoration included at noextracost.

April 2019
We are very pleasedto present The Neil R. Jones Collection, which starts with an 11,000+ word biography of Jones that incorporates his words, newspaperarticles and our research to create a long overdue portrait of thecreator of Professor Jameson.  We have also located a nearlyall of Jones' non-fiction writings from various magazines and fanzinesand have included them, along with 5, never before reprinted, storiesthat chart hisearly years as an author.  Copiously illustratedthroughout, wehopeyou enjoy it.

KILLER, COME BACK TO ME
Ray Bradbury
Cover art by Paul Mann

THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION OF RAY BRADBURY’S EXTRAORDINARY CRIME FICTION

Ray Bradbury achieved literary renown for a widely diverse body of work, including masterpieces of fantasy and science fiction such as Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and Something Wicked This Way Comes, as well as classic short stories that have thrilled, touched, and terrified generations of readers. Though he was less well known for crime fiction, some of his finest publications occurred in this genre, penned for publications ranging from pulp magazines of the 1940s such as Dime Mystery and Detective Tales to premier markets of their era such as McCall’s and Playboy.

This new collection contains 20 stories, including classics of the genre and rare, little-known gems such as the title story, Bradbury’s first published mystery. A number of the stories were adapted by the author for his popular TV series, The Ray Bradbury Theater, and fans of Bradbury’s work will recognize his touch with crime stories about circus sideshow performers and ventriloquists’ dummies, sunken cathedrals, time travelers, and robots that look just like people. But they will also discover plenty that is startling and unfamiliar, such as the original short story that inspired a portion of Bradbury’s famous novel Dandelion Wine, as well as that story’s dark and psychologically disturbing sequel, written at the prompting of no less a figure in the mystery field than Ellery Queen.

No one ever wrote like Bradbury. And as this lavish collection demonstrates, when he turned his hand to this genre, he produced some of the most unforgettable crime stories ever told.

First publication anywhere!
Ray Bradbury (1920-2012) was one of the most acclaimed writers of all time, read by hundreds of millions of people across the world; 2020 would have been his 100th birthday
Featuring an original cover painting by Paul Mann and 11 interior illustrations exclusive to this collection by Robert Gale and Deena So'Oteh
Hardcover first edition also features premium design elements including custom endpapers, heavier stock, and a ribbon marker

Erle Stanley Gardner

HAS DONALD LAM GONE OVER TO THE DARK SIDE?

From the world-famous creator of PERRY MASON, Erle Stanley Gardner—at his death the best-selling American author of all time—comes another baffling case for the Cool & Lam detective agency. Return to the 1960s as a simple insurance investigation into a car accident puts Bertha Cool and Donald Lam on the trail of murder—and Donald hip-deep in danger when he poses as an ex-con to infiltrate a criminal gang. It’s Gardner’s twistiest caper ever, and a fitting conclusion to Hard Case Crime’s revival of this classic (and long-unavailable) detective series.

James Patterson, Condé Nast Reviving The Shadow In New Original Book Series

James Patterson and Condé Nast are teaming to revive vintage crime fighter The Shadow in a series of books that will also aim to be adapted for the screen.

Hachette Book Group imprint Little, Brown will publish the original series, whose first installment is due out in the fall of 2021. Condé Nast has long controlled licensing for the character via its Street & Smith subsidiary.

The Shadow, a signature New York vigilante, originated in the 1930s as a series of pulp novels by Walter B. Gibson. A popular radio drama based on the books featured the voice of Orson Welles. In 1994, Universal released a feature film adaptation starring Alec Baldwin.

“Who can forget The Shadow’s historic tagline, ‘Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?’”, Patterson said in the official announcement. “Well, The Shadow knows. And soon readers will, too. I’ve long been a fan of The Shadow and am looking forward to bringing his legendary character to life in the modern age.”

Bill Robinson of James Patterson Entertainment said the goal of the reboot was to introduce a new generation to the character and his world. “As we launch the new series of Shadow books, we will also plot the course of the Shadow’s return to the screen together with Condé Nast Entertainment,” he said.

“Knowing that James Patterson has created some of the most enduring crime fighters of all-time, the future of The Shadow couldn’t be in better hands,” said Neil McGinness, who manages the Street & Smith superhero universe.

Philip José Farmer’s Up from the Bottomless Pit, originally written in the late 1970s with the working title The Dragon’s Breath, is a near-mainstream novel about the ultimate ecological nightmare. Set in an alternate/near future 1970s, Up from the Bottomless Pit tells of a world so ravenous in its desire for oil that it has thrown caution to the wind. Using an experimental deep-water laser drill off the California coast, humankind burns a hole through the ocean floor only to unleash a deadly torrent that initially threatens the greater Los Angeles area, but quickly escalates to a catastrophe of worldwide proportions with the potential to wipe out all life on the planet.

The novel wasn’t quite what Del Rey was looking for at the time, so Phil instead turned in Dark is the Sun (set fifteen billion years in the future). Fast forward to 2005 and the team here at Meteor House was launching the fanzine Farmerphile: The Magazine of Philip José Farmer. We serialized the novel over the first 10 quarterly issues between 2005 and 2007. At $11 per issue, it cost over $100 to read the novel. In 2007, Subterranean Press published Up from the Bottomless Pit and Other Stories, collecting all of Phil’s material from Farmerphile in a deluxe limited edition of only 250 copies. But, at $125, it again cost over $100 to read this book.

This is the Farmer novel you’ve heard about but never got to read! Now, available for the first time ever in a trade paperback edition, you can get Up from the Bottomless Pit for only $20 (+shipping).

Featuring cover art by Keith Howell, a foreword by Farmerphile editor Christopher Paul Carey, and an introduction by award winning environmental writer Sharman Apt Russell!

A Rough Knight for the Queen
by Philip José Farmer

First Stand Alone Edition!
Now available for pre-order!
Shipping begins August 2020 after FarmerCon XV!

Philip José Farmer fans know that he was fascinated with 19th century explorer and author Sir Richard Francis Burton. Farmer made Burton the protagonist of the Hugo winning novel, To Your Scattered Bodies Go, the first book in the Riverworld series. In Gods of Riverworld, the final book in the series, Peter Jairus Frigate (Farmer’s fictional stand in) said that he had written a biography of Richard Burton but that Fawn Brodie’s biography of Burton came out before Frigate could get his published. When asked about this in the early 2000s, Phil said, “I was going to write a biography of Burton but Fawn’s biography came out. It seemed to be pretty definitive so I decided not to write more.”

The biography Farmer did write about Burton starts in 1855, when Burton was thirty-four years old and on an expedition to find the source of the Nile. As for its origin, Phil explained, “This was written for what was called a ‘Men’s Magazine.’ I think the magazine was titled Gonads, but I am probably wrong. Anyway, for reasons unknown, the article was rejected and so went into the proverbial trunk.”

A Rough Knight for the Queen stayed in that trunk for decades until Farmer sold the original unpublished manuscript and it eventually wound up in the hands of collector Craig Kimber. When Paul Spiteri and Michael Croteau were putting together Pearls from Peoria, a massive compilation of Farmer rarities published by Subterranean Press in 2006, Craig sent them a copy of the manuscript to include in the collection.

Now Meteor House brings you Farmer’s 26,000 word biography of Burton in both an affordable trade paperback and in a signed limited hardcover.
Both editions feature introductory material by Mick Walton (author of Sir Richard Burton and His Circle), Mark Hodder (author of the Burton and Swinburne novels) and Paul Spiteri (editor of Pearls from Peoria).
The hardcover limited edition will be signed by Walton, Hodder, Spiteri, and cover artist Charles Berlin.

2020 Munsey Award Winner
Mike Ashley

Mike Ashley is an author, bibliographer, critic, editor, and historian with a special expertise in the history of magazine science fiction, fantasy, and weird fiction. In 2002, he received a Pilgrim Award from the Science Fiction Research Association in recognition of his distinguished contributions to the study of science fiction. He is the author or co-author of numerous works related to the pulps, science fiction, and fantasy. These include THE AGE OF THE STORYTELLERS: BRITISH POPULAR FICTION MAGAZINES, 1880-1950, ALGERNON BLACKWOOD: A BIO-BIBLIOGRAPHY, “BLUE BOOK — The Slick in Pulp Clothing,” THE GERNSBACK DAYS: A STUDY IN THE EVOLUTION OF MODERN SCIENCE FICTION FROM 1911 TO 1936, MONTHLY TERRORS: AN INDEX TO THE WEIRD FANTASY MAGAZINES PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES AND GREAT BRITAIN, SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY AND WEIRD FICTION MAGAZINES,  THE SUPERNATURAL INDEX: A LISTING OF FANTASY, SUPERNATURAL, OCCULT, WEIRD AND HORROR ANTHOLOGIES, and others. In 2000, Ashley began to publish his multi-part THE HISTORY OF THE SCIENCE-FICTION MAGAZINES, beginning with THE TIME MACHINES: THE STORY OF THE SCIENCE-FICTION PULP MAGAZINES FROM THE BEGINNING TO 1950. Mr. Ashley has also edited many anthologies and single-author collections, often drawing work from the pulps. He is currently part of a team compiling an index to the most important British popular fiction magazines published between 1880 and 1950, including all the British pulps.

The Munsey Award is presented annually to an individual or institution that has bettered the pulp community.

Nominated by the general pulp community, Mike was selected as our 2020 Munsey Award winner by votes cast by the previous winners of the Lamont, Munsey, and Rusty Awards. As this year’s PulpFest has been canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic, the British Royal Mail will be presenting this year’s award to Mike.

Congratulations to Mike for this most deserved award. In accepting the 2020 Munsey Award, he shared the following words with us:
“It’s really great to win this award and I must thank everyone who voted for me. Especially as I feel such a long way from the epicentre of the pulp world, tucked away as I am in North Kent in England. Britain had its pulps, but nothing like those that appeared in the United States. In the early 1960s, when I started researching and collecting them, not only had the heyday of the pulps long passed, but it wasn’t easy to track them down in Britain.

Sure we had some dreadful British editions of American pulps that had appeared during the War and continued afterwards for some years, but these were often abridged versions and always looked second rate. If I was going to collect and understand the pulps properly, I had to collect the originals. However, in those long-ago, pre-internet days, doing so wasn’t that easy.

I now forget all of the dealers who helped me. There were some in Britain who had US pulps for sale — Ken Slater and Ken Chapman in particular. In the States, I was helped by Bob Madle, Bob Weinberg, and others. And bit by bit my collection grew.

However, my fascination was not just collecting pulps, but understanding their history. And it wasn’t just the science fiction or weird pulps that intrigued me. I suppose I have to thank or blame Sam Moskowitz for really setting my interest on fire, though it wasn’t just him. Tom Cockcroft in New Zealand was always enticing me with references to obscure magazines. Billy Pettitt said to me once that I was wasting my time researching the primary science fiction and fantasy magazines because they had already been covered. He told me that I ought to turn my attention to the rare British pulps like HUTCHINSON’S MYSTERY-STORY or the obscure PAN.
This was in the mid-sixties, and there was one small fanzine in particular that drove my collecting bug. That was LORE. Produced by Jerry Page and Jerry Burge, it made references to all kinds of lesser-known magazines — both British and American — and pushed for resources not only to index them, but to reprint them.

These days, with the wonderful work achieved by Adventure House, Black Dog Books, Steeger Books, and so many others, it’s relatively easy to acquire facsimile or reprinted issues of the old pulps. I never believed back in 1965 that I would have a complete reprint of THE THRILL BOOK – admittedly not as pulps in their original format — but no matter. It was so legendary that I doubted I’d ever see them. I remember trying to check out these early pulps at the British Library only to have my submission card returned time and again with the notation, ‘Destroyed in the War.’

In some ways, the comparative ease with which — thanks to the internet and reprint sources — you can now find so many of these early pulps has perhaps tainted some of that thrill of the chase. But for research purposes it’s brilliant. However, there is still so much that is not readily available. I wonder whether I’ll ever assemble a complete run of the British magazine, YES OR NO – not a pulp in looks, but definitely in content. This was another destroyed in the War, but in this case, very few seemed to have bothered to collect it. I may well have the biggest run of that magazine of anyone. However, I still have only 237 of its 798 issues, which is less than a third. It’s that kind of research that drives me on. The delight in discovering, reading, and researching such early magazines is still as vibrant in me now as it was almost sixty years ago.
Now I have another thrill, with the Munsey Award. How wonderful.

THE PULPSTER
Coming in September!

PULPSTER editor Bill Lampkin and I discussed the 2020 edition of THE PULPSTER. It will be the magazine's 29th issue.

A typical issue of THE PULPSTER is 44 - 48 pages long, plus covers. As Bill mentions in his post, PULPSTER #29 will be 84 pages long, plus covers. As you can see, Frank Kelly Freas' cover art (from TOPS IN SCIENCE FICTION) is absolutely stunning. We're also going to go with more color in the issue. I'm not talking just about the advertisements, but the interior illustrations as well.
So you're basically talking about an issue that's nearly twice as big as a normal PULPSTER, with extra color included.

The usual price for THE PULPSTER is $10 plus shipping. We'll be charging $15 plus shipping for the new issue due to the extra color and the extra pages. I believe the postage cost (by first class mail in a sturdy cardboard envelope) will be $4 in the USA. That's my best guess. If you want it shipped via priority mail (in a flat rate bubble envelope) the postage cost will be $8 in the USA. Of course, if you buy other books from me, I'll include it with one of your shipments.

The book will be printed by our regular printer in Dayton, Ohio. He's done a very good job with past issues. In these pandemic days, we wanted to give him some business to help tide him over. I'm currently trying to arrange delivery with PulpFest chairman, Jack Cullers. I'm hoping we can get together somewhere in the middle (Jack's from southwest Ohio and I'm from eastern Pennsylvania), perhaps around Labor Day.

Please don't send any money now as I don't have the issue on hand, nor do I know actual shipping costs and such.
If you’re interested in reserving your copy now, please contact Mike at mike@pulpfest.com.

And a lot of great content will be filling those pages!

THE PULPSTER has two major themes this year: the 100th anniversary of the birth of author Ray Bradbury, and the 100th anniversary of the debut of BLACK MASK.
Garyn G. Roberts heads up the section on Ray Bradbury with three pieces: a general look at the life of the writer, an essay on Bradbury his friend, and a look at Bradbury’s contributions to the Popular Publication detective pulps. Samuel James Maronie offers a fan’s reflection on meeting Bradbury at a 1996 convention.

Next, we shift from Bradbury himself to the author’s Martian legacy. Leading off, Michael Chomko writes about the influences that led Bradbury to create his singular vision of the Red Planet in THE MARTIAN CHRONICLES. Then, Sara Light-Waller looks at the depiction of Mars through the pulp years. Henry G. Franke III writes about “Bradbury, Burroughs, and Mars,” and how Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Barsoom inspired a young Bradbury. Wrapping up, Albert Wendland discusses how the exploration of Mars by orbiters and rovers has changed the way the planet is portrayed in science fiction.

The second feature section — celebrating BLACK MASK — kicks off with an excerpt from Milton Shaw’s book, JOSEPH T. SHAW: THE MAN BEHIND “BLACK MASK.” Milton Shaw looks at the beginnings of BLACK MASK, and what his father, “Cap” Shaw, accomplished during his 10 years at the pulp magazine’s influential editor.

Will Murray looks at the BLACK MASK writers who “left too many tales untold.” Next, John Wooley looks at Kenneth White, who took over the editor’s fedora at BLACK MASK during the 1940s. Christopher Ryan tells of the surprising response from high school seniors in his lit class to reading a BLACK MASK story, William Cole’s “Waiting for Rusty.” Then Craig McDonald explores the possibility that there may have been an actual killer in the pages of BLACK MASK. And wrapping up the BLACK MASK section, Brooks E. Hefner, co-director of the Circulating American Magazine project, looks at the pulp’s circulation from 1925 – 1940.

If that weren’t enough, we have several other articles in store for readers.

Darrell Schweitzer treats us to a discussion he had with science-fiction authors and couple Leigh Brackett and Edmond Hamilton in 1977, shortly before Hamilton’s death. Stuart Hopen takes a deeper look at Philip Wylie, whose works inspired both the Man of Bronze and the Man of Steel — Doc Savage and Superman — and other fictional heroes.

Tony Davis celebrates the brief reign of Canada’s “King of the Pulp Writers,” Thomas P. Kelley. And Martin Grams Jr. traces the history of “Renfrew of the Mounties.” We also take a look at folk-rocker Bob Dylan’s use of pulp magazine images, written by yours truly.

Robert Deis writes about model and actress Eva Lynd, who was featured in numerous men’s adventure magazine covers and illustrations during the 1960s. Eva was to be the guest of honor at PulpFest 2020 and hopes to attend next year.
Rounding out the magazine is our “Final Chapters” department, celebrating the lives of those in the pulp community that we’ve recently lost.

We hope to have THE PULPSTER to the printer by mid-August, so copies should be available for purchase through Mike Chomko, Books, Bud’s Art Books, and other purveyors by September.
(The price is to be determined.) If you’re interested in reserving your copy now, please contact Mike at mike@pulpfest.com.

(The cover of THE PULPSTER #29 features Frank Kelly Freas’ artwork for “Lorelei of the Red Mist,” from the Fall 1953 issue of TOPS IN SCIENCE FICTION, originally published by Fiction House.)

Forged in war, The Phantom Detective wages a one-man battle on crime! Solving impossible mysteries and delivering his own justice, he is the underworld’s masked nightmare!

Two flaming corpses, doomed pawns in a daring killer’s game, are hurled into the midst of a throng of Manhattan merrymakers — and catapult The Phantom into action as he embarks on one of his most exciting manhunts.

It is not unusual for experts and fans to draw comparisons between Pulp heroes and characters that followed them. With the Phantom Detective, however, the comparisons between Ned Pines’ master sleuth and another, much more popular masked detective are hard to deny, even if the other debuted in comic books. It would be difficult for anyone to say that Batman did not at least owe a bit of debt to The Phantom Detective. Although not in the same manner, both Richard Curtis Van Loan and Bruce Wayne were orphans and both men born to wealth. Also both characters underwent vigorous training in various skills. Both were skilled fighters and criminologists, masters of disguise and escape, and of course each held a claim to being the world’s greatest detective. The Phantom Detective also maintained a crime laboratory, keeping it a secret, much like Batman did with his Batcave. Above all else, however, the greatest evidence that The Phantom Detective contributed to the development of Batman rests in the fact that The Phantom’s friend, publisher Frank Havens, had a red flashing light installed atop his newspaper building to use as a signal to summon his masked friend. This, obviously, predates Batman’s own Bat Signal, but even more glaring is that two men responsible for editing Batman at his earliest stages of development had previously been editors on a particular Pulp magazine - The Phantom Detective!

‘The Broadway Murders’ was originally published in the August 1938 issue of The Phantom Detective Magazine and is read with pulse pounding intensity by award winning voice actor Milton Bagby.

G-8 and His Battle Aces #104 Audiobook
Scourge of the Sky Monster
by Robert J. Hogan
Read by Nick Santa Maria

  Now available!

They called G-8 the Flying Spy. History never recorded his exploits—and for good reason! No one would ever believe World War I was that wild!

Terror prowls the skies over No Man’s Land, a deadly creature of cloud that threatens to destroy half a planet. And from a frantic army at bay comes the secret code of the Battle Aces, a message that sends G-8 out on the most doom-fraught mission Allied wings ever dared — a duel to the death, sight unseen, against a scourge no bullet can kill!

Author Robert J. Hogan wrote G-8 and His Battle Aces for ten years. What makes this accomplishment even more intriguing is that Hogan wrote every single adventure of America’s Master Spy. This was rare in the Pulp industry, as long running series usually ended up having at least two authors, if not more, because writers had to be spelled from time to time or had other projects. Hogan, however, piloted G-8 through every single adventure.

Driving through the Holland Tunnel in 1933, Hogan crafted the basics of G-8 and his war torn world while caught in traffic. He took the name from a ranch in Colorado where he’d spent a summer, actually flying for his first time on a plane for that trip. That singular trip, according to some, led to Hogan’s lifelong interest in flying. G-8 would be the only name America’s Master Spy would ever have.

G-8 was also not the only spy to work in his stories. His girlfriend, a nurse who had the designation R-1, was also an agent of the government. Much like her flying boyfriend, R-1’s true name was never revealed. Although not frequently in the stories, she made the most of her appearances, actively committing espionage and even using her own disguise skills at times.

Nick Santa Maria brings G-8, Nippy and Bull to thrilling life in their desperate struggle to defeat a monstrous nemesis unlike anything they have ever before encountered in Scourge of the Sky Monster. Originally published in the June, 1943 issue of G-8 and His Battle Aces magazine.

Nick DeGregorio composed the music for the G-8 and His Battle Aces series of audiobooks.

Radio Archives Pulp Classics
Mystery Book Magazine eBook
Winter 1948

Now available!

Total Pulp Experience. These exciting pulp adventures have been beautifully reformatted for easy reading as an eBook and features every story, every editorial, and every column of the original pulp magazine.

Mystery Book Magazine was a bid to cash in on the post-war mystery boom. Each issue featured a full-length mystery novel written by a top-notch mystery writer. It made its debut in 1945, but due to poor sales, it changed from monthly to bi-monthly and in 1947 to quarterly. In 1950, in an effort to boost sales, it changed its name to Giant Detective. Two issues later, it ceased publication. During its 34-issue, 6-year run, it presented some top rated mysteries for its pulp readers, from the best writers in the field, including four original Michael Shayne mysteries by Brett Halliday. Mystery Book Magazine returns in these vintage pulp tales, reissued for today’s readers in electronic format.
