Benefit for Needy Writers
Searching for '..."Benefit for Needy Writers"...'George Creel, president of the Authors League Fund, revealed recently that the policy of lending money to authors out of work forced expenditure of $17,000 during the year ending March 31st, while the income from the fund's endowment came to only $4,642.21 for the same period. To reduce the deficit, the Southwestern A Cappella Choir gave a benefit concert in New York City recently.
Ellis Parker Butler, treasurer of the Fund, said that no matter how famous a writer, artist or musician might be, he frequently was barred from usual methods of raising money in times of stress because he did not draw a salary which would enable him to borrow from banks, and because he was of a group "unlikely to own property."
