Persephone of Eleusis

persephoneofeleusis.jpg (35559 bytes)
Persephone of Eleusis: A Romance of Ancient Greece
Published by The Stratford Company, 1923
This historical novel is based on the classical Greek legend and mythology of the goddess Persephone. The research Harris conducted while travelling in Greece and Palestine with her husband, shortly after they were married in 1912, provided her with background material to lend her story authenticity. The original publication of Persephone of Eleusis in 1923 has become, over the years, a very rare book. However, in recent times several publishers have reprinted this novel in print and ebook format and it has also been made available to read for free online at the Project Gutenberg website. Persephone of Eleusis is the author's only published novel and there is a contrast between this early work and her later short fiction within the science fiction genre.

Sources and Acknowledgments:
In the process of compiling this bibliography, as well as referring to my own collection of literature, a number of online sources were consulted, not the least of which were The Internet Speculative Fiction Database and Philip Stephensen-Payne's Galactic Central website, the latter a home to William G. Contento's Fictionmags Index.

Addenda:
I have not included in this bibliography the various ebook single-story chapbook publications and facsimile reprints of pulp magazines in which Harris' work has been reissued. Moreover, it is worth acknowledging here that the author's writings have been reprinted in foreign language editions. Listing all of these publications is beyond the scope of this webpage.
Clare Winger Harris wrote five letters to the editor that were printed in the following issues of these pulp magazines: Amazing Stories (May 1929), Air Wonder Stories (September 1929), Weird Tales (March 1930), Weird Tales (November 1930) and Wonder Stories (August 1931).
