Novels

Cosmic Engineers
This novel was first published as a serial in the February, March and April 1939 issues of Astounding Science Fiction.
An expanded version of the original, serialised version of Cosmic Engineers was printed in book form by Gnome Press in 1950.

City
This novel began life as a series of seven interconnected novelettes and short stories that were published in issues of Astounding Science Fiction between 1944 and 1947. The titles of these individual stories are "City", "Huddling Place", "Census", "Desertion", "Paradise", "Hobbies" and "Aesop". One further tale in the series, "The Trouble with Ants", appeared in the January 1951 issue of Fantastic Adventures.
All of these stories were assembled together as a "fixup" novel and reprinted in book form by Gnome Press in 1952.
For its appearance in the Gnome Press edition and some later versions of this novel, the story "The Trouble with Ants" was retitled "The Simple Way". However, the original title of this novelette has been used since in a number of anthology reprints.
Simak wrote one final short story in the series. "Epilog" was printed in the Astounding: John W. Campbell Memorial Anthology, a book edited by Harry Harrison and published by Random House in 1973. Beginning with the 1981 Ace Books edition, subsequent reprints of City have seen this story added to the contents, although this is not the case with all of them.
Given the provenance of City, in that it is made up of individual stories not originally intended as chapters of a novel, I think it is fair to say that in book form, it should perhaps be classed as a collection of short fiction. I have chosen to list it here in the novels section as I consider it to be a "fixup" novel. Empire
Published by World Editions, Inc., 1951
Subtitled "A Powerful Novel of Intrigue and Action in the Not-So-Distant Future", this novel was No. 7 in the publisher's "Galaxy Science Fiction Novel" series of books edited by Horace L. Gold.
The background to Empire is an interesting one. The original draft manuscript, which went unpublished, was written by John W. Campbell, Jr. in the late 1920s, when he was still in his teens. Years later, Simak rewrote the novel at the request of Campbell, who was by then the editor of Astounding Science Fiction. Both agreed that Simak's reworking of the story was unsuitable for inclusion in the magazine. Several years passed before this revised version of Empire finally saw publication in 1951, when it appeared under Simak's name alone. The reason for this was that by the time Simak sold the story to Horace L. Gold, Campbell had refused to share the credit for writing it, perhaps wishing to distance himself from an early literary effort he had penned over 20 years previously.

Time Quarry
This novel was first published as a serial in the October, November and December 1950 issues of Galaxy Science Fiction.
Time Quarry was reprinted in book form by Simon & Schuster in 1951 under the title Time and Again and was reprinted again by Dell in 1953 as First He Died.
The ending of Time Quarry, as it appears in Galaxy Science Fiction, is different to the one that features in subsequent book form reprints of this novel.

Ring Around the Sun
This novel was first published as a serial in the December 1952 and January and February 1953 issues of Galaxy Science Fiction.
Ring Around the Sun was reprinted in book form by Simon & Schuster in 1953.

The Fisherman
This novel was first published as a serial in the April, May, June and July 1961 issues of Analog Science Fact—Fiction.
The Fisherman was reprinted in book form by Doubleday in 1961 under the title Time Is the Simplest Thing.

Cemetery World was reprinted in book form by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1973.
Interestingly, the version of this novel published by G. P. Putnam's Sons, and other publishers throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, was edited, with segments of the original text from the magazine removed. The DAW Books reprint of Cemetery World in 1983 restored the missing text from the Analog Science Fiction—Science Fact serialisation, at the request of the author.

This novel was first published as a serial in the May/June and July/August 1973 issues of Worlds of If.

This novel is an expanded version of "Project Mastodon", a novelette that was originally printed in March 1955 issue of Galaxy Science Fiction.
In its revised form and under the new title Mastodonia it was published by Del Rey/Ballantine Books in 1978.
Mastodonia was reprinted in the UK by Sidgwick & Jackson in 1979 as Catface. Both of these titles have since been used by other publishers.

This short story was originally to have been included in Harlan Ellison's anthology The Last Dangerous Visions, which went unpublished until six years after his death. Simak's contribution was among several others that were missing from the contents of the book when it eventually saw publication in 2024.

Moreover, it is worth acknowledging here that the author's writings have been reprinted extensively in foreign language editions. Listing all of these publications is beyond the scope of this webpage. However, information on books and magazines wherein Simak's work has appeared in translation can be found at the aforementioned websites.
As far as I am aware, Simak only ever had one of his poems published—assuming he wrote more than one in his lifetime!  This was a piece called "Jazz", which was published in the December 1922 issue of the magazine The Fig-leaf.
In addition to the nonfiction books that I have listed above, Simak served as editor for Nebula Award Stories 6, a paperback science fiction anthology published by Gollancz in 1971.
