The Space Willies
Published by Ace Books, 1958
This novel is an expanded version of "Plus X", a novella that was originally printed in the June 1956 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. In its revised form and under the new title The Space Willies it was published by Ace Books in 1958 as part of an "Ace Double" omnibus edition alongside a selection of Russell's short fiction entitled Six Worlds Yonder, the latter containing the following novelettes and short stories: "The Waitabits", "Tieline", "Top Secret", "Nothing New", "Into Your Tent I'll Creep" and "Diabologic". The cover image above is taken from this edition.
It should be noted here that the author's original title for this novel-length expansion of "Plus X" was Next of Kin. This title was restored for when the novel was printed again in book form a year later, in 1959, by the British publisher, Dennis Dobson. This latter edition contains the full text of Russell's novel and is considered to be the definitive version. The Space Willies, as published by Ace Books, was in an abridged form; presumably the story was cut down to size by the publisher to make it a suitable length to appear as part of the one their "Ace Double" titles. The full, unexpurgated text, again under the title Next of Kin, was reprinted most recently in 2001 by NESFA Press as part of their collection Entities: The Selected Novels of Eric Frank Russell. Indeed, the various reprints of this novel in book form have, over the years, included the restored original text and been published as Next of Kin.

Entities: The Selected Novels of Eric Frank Russell, ed. Rick Katze, NESFA Press, 2001 (this novelette is reprinted here as by Eric Frank Russell and under the title "Mechanical Mice")
This novelette was cowritten by Maurice G. Hugi but appeared under his name alone when it was first published in 1941 and reprinted in the Adventures in Time and Space anthology. Since its subsequent appearance in the collection Like Nothing on Earth, this tale has been solely credited either to Hugi or Russell. To further confuse matters, Hugi is sometimes referred to in anthologies as Maurice A. Hugi, not to mention another small matter in that the "the" is dropped from the story's title on several occasions!
From what I have been able to learn about the origin of "The Mechanical Mice", it is based on an idea by Maurice G. Hugi, who was a friend of Russell. The latter then helped flesh out the source material to create the story itself, putting it all down on a typewriter in Liverpool one night during a raid by the Luftwaffe in 1940. In order to give Hugi encouragement, Russell was happy for his friend to receive sole credit for the novelette when the manuscript was sold to editor John W. Campbell, Jr. and printed in the January 1941 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. The personal background to this is that Hugi had never had one of his stories published in an American magazine and was suffering at the time from chronic diabetes. He died in 1947.

Sources and Acknowledgments:
In the process of compiling this bibliography, as well as referring to my own collection of literature, a number of print and online sources were consulted, not the least of which were a bibliography of Russell entitled Eric Frank Russell: Our Sentinel in Space (1999), The Internet Speculative Fiction Database and Philip Stephensen-Payne's Galactic Central website, the latter a home to the Fictionmags Index.

Addenda:
I have not included here in this bibliography the various facsimile reprints of pulp magazines in which Russell's work was originally published.
Also not included in this bibliography are the numerous articles, reviews, essays, forewords, introductions, and letters the author contributed to various books and periodicals, as well as interviews and biographical pieces written about Eric Frank Russell. Information on where some of these appeared can be found at the The Internet Speculative Fiction Database and the Galactic Central websites.
Moreover, it is worth acknowledging here that the author's writings have been reprinted extensively in foreign language editions. Listing all of these publications is beyond the scope of this webpage. However, information on books and magazines wherein Russell's work has appeared in translation can be found at the aforementioned websites.
Russell had two of his poems published: "The Astronaut", which appeared in the November 1934 edition of the Bulletin of the British Interplanetary Society and was reprinted (in revised form) under the title "Spirit of Fandom" in the December 1940 issue of Spaceways fanzine and an untitled poem written with Theodore R. Cogswell that was included in the August 1959 issue of Publications of the Institute for Twenty-First Century Studies, a fanzine for professional authors that was edited and founded by Cogswell. This latter poem was reprinted in the book PITFCS: Proceedings of the Institute for Twenty-First Century Studies, which was published by Advent in 1992.

Further Reading:
Eric Frank Russell: Our Sentinel in Space, a comprehensive bibliography of Russell's writings that contains a wealth of information not included on this webpage, was edited by Philip Stephensen-Payne & Sean Wallace and published by Galactic Central Publications in 1999. This book represents the third revision of an earlier bibliography entitled Eric Frank Russell: A Working Bibliography, which was edited by Philip Stephensen-Payne & Gordon Benson, Jr. and produced by the same publisher in 1986.
An outstanding biography of the author entitled Into Your Tent: The World of Eric Frank Russell, one of Britain's Science Fiction "Greats" was edited by John L. Ingham and published by Plantech in 2010. This book contains a foreword by Alan Dean Foster.
