Press - October 2006 newsletter! The October 2006 newsletter from Hippocampus Press is reproduced below: W. H. Pugmire's collection THE FUNGAL STAIN AND OTHER DREAMS is finally available! It features a cover painting and interior illustrations by noted Lovecraftian artist Robert H. Knox. In recent months we've also released Mara Kirk Hart's LOVECRAFT'S NEW YORK CIRCLE to favorable notices. In conjunction with the book's release, S. T. Joshi, Peter Cannon and I participated in taping a BBC Radio sponsored piece on Lovecraft, which included a walking tour of Lovecraftian sites in both the Manhattan and Brooklyn boroughs of New York City. We'll soon have more information on the status of this special audio program, which is scheduled to air in December. Also available is the first book length anthology of criticism on Clark Ashton Smith, Scott Connors' THE FREEDOM OF FANTASTIC THINGS. Our centennial collection of essays on Robert E. Howard, TWO-GUN BOB, edited by Benjamin Szumskyj and featuring a Foreword by the great Michael Moorcock, is still on target for release in October. We are striving to get finished copies in time for the World Fantasy Convention in Austin, Texas next month, although it will be tight. Cover art for this title, too, is up at our website. We have been forced to delay the next entry into our Lovecraft's Library series, AN EXCHANGE OF SOULS and LAZARUS by Barry Pain and Henri Beraud respectively, partially due to the difficulties of the "double" binding style, but mostly to clear the way for our next two releases. Those are, of course, the final volume of Lovecraft's COLLECTED ESSAYS: PHILOSOPHY; AUTOBIOGRAPHY & MISCELLANY, as well as the *third* volume of the COMPLETE POETRY AND TRANSLATIONS OF CLARK ASHTOIN SMITH. As previously announced, we are releasing the Smith set in a nonlinear sequence, with Volume 3 appearing before Volumes 1and 2. Realistically, we may expect the paperback state of COLLECTED ESSAYS 5 in December and the hardcover state CE5 and the third CAS volume appearing in January 2007. A table of contents for the third volume of the Smith poetry collection is up at the website. Additionally, we are finishing up the promised CD-ROM of the entire five volume Lovecraft's COLLECTED ESSAYS series. It will incorporate not only the text of all the essays, but also the complete texts of Lovecraft's own journal THE CONSERVATIVE, plus actual scans of the entire run of the journal. Many of the more important Lovecraft illustrations from the essays will also be incorporated in high resolution, full color graphics files on the CD-ROM. Other features will include links between the essays and an alphabetical listing of all Lovecraft's works, which will include all his fiction and poetry as well as the essays themselves. (Of course we are not including the actual texts of all of HPL's fiction and poetry, but only of the essays.) S. T. Joshi is also preparing a *chronological* listing of all of Lovecraft's works, which will be printed in Volume 5 and also included on the CD-ROM. THE MAN FROM CROSS PLAINS: A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION, is a collection of essays by some of the top Howard scholars in the field today. The book is being published as a benefit for The City of Cross Plains Fire Relief Fund, and all profits will be donated to the fund to benefit the victims of the terrible wild fire that destroyed much of the town in December, 2005. The book also contains the first U. S. publication of "The Ghost with the Silk Hat," a nine chapter novella by Robert E. Howard. "The Ghost with the Silk Hat" was previously published in WRITER OF THE DARK by Dark Carneval Press (Switzerland) in 1986. This was a limited edition of 500 and, according to Dennis McHaney, about 40 changes were made to the text, including at one point, changing the identity of the characters speaking. This volume has perhaps double the amount of information that was in THE LAST CELT, as a LOT of REH publishing and discoveries have occurred since 1973, the cut off date for THE LAST CELT. - November 2 - 5, 2006 World Fantasy Con 2006 will be held in Austin, Texas Nov. 2-5, with the focus and emphasis on the Centennial Anniversary of one Robert E. Howard. Guests include Glen Cook, Bradley Denton (Toastmaster), Dave Duncan, John Jude Palencar, Joe Haldeman, Martha Wells, Edward Bryant, Rick Klaw, and others. Watch the World Fantasy Con website for the latest updates. Scott Cupp, who along with multiple-award-winning author and editor Joe R. Lansdale edited the forthcoming anthology CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE, told SCI FI Wire that the book's subtitle, "Texans Celebrate Robert E. Howard," explains the book's purpose and inspiration. "[Howard, creator of Conan,] is an amazing figure in the history of speculative fiction," Cupp said in interview. "[His] writing career [lasted] less than 15 years, [yet his] output [consisted] of [much] quality fiction and poetry, all while living and working in a small Texas community that did not understand him or his work." This year marks the centenary of Howard's birth, so it only seemed appropriate to honor him, Cupp said. "When the [2006] World Fantasy Convention in Austin elected to honor [Howard's] birth with the focus of the convention, it seemed natural to have a commemorative volume," he said. Cupp said that the book contains stories featuring characters created by Howard, stories featuring Howard as a character and stories inspired by the fiction styles of Howard. "Since [Howard] wrote in virtually every type of pulp market except science fiction and romance, this left a wide area of field available," Cupp said. "We got a Briton Roman occupation weird horror story from Ardath Mayhar, ... a modern horror story from Neal Barrett Jr., a very weird western from fantasy writer C. Dean Andersson (featuring his female Norse barbarian warrior, Bloodsong), new work from Howard Waldrop (a Mexican fantasy featuring the great-nephew of [Howard's character] Breckinridge Elkins) ... and a 'Multiverse' story from Michael Moorcock. We [also] got some indescribable stories such as Lawrence Person's 'The Toughest Jew in the West' and Jayme Lynn Blaschke's very alternate-world fantasy of giant apes." Other writers featured include: Gene Wolfe, James Reasoner, Bradley Denton, Bill Crider and Charlotte Laughlin, Lillian Stewart Carl, Mark Finn, Carrie Richerson, Chris Roberson, Jessica Reisman, L.J. Washburn, Rick Klaw and Paul Miles, Melissa Mia Hall, Chris Nakashima-Brown and Cupp himself. CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE is being published as a joint venture between FACT (Fandom Association of Central Texas) and MonkeyBrain Books. It will be given away to all attendees of the 2006 World Fantasy Convention in November. Those who cannot attend the convention but would like a copy of CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE can purchase a supporting memberships for $35 and receive the Con program book and CROSS PLAINS UNIVERSE.
