2011 Windy City Pulp and Paper Convention
April 15th-17th, 2011

CELEBRATING THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF DIME DETECTIVE
and Popular Publications.

Just a reminder that if you're attending and haven't booked your hotel room yet, the deadline to get the convention rate (which is a significant saving over the regular rate) is APRIL 1 at 5:00 pm Central time. You can book online at the website the hotel set up for us:

If you're looking for a roommate to share a room with, feel free to post asking for that on our Facebook page; I noted one person posting there yesterday looking for a roommate.

More auction photos will be posted this weekend, including an issue of THE LONE RANGER which is in gorgeous condition.  And our printer has told us that our program book, WINDY CITY PULP STORIES #11 -- 150 pages devoted to the pulps of Popular Publications -- has shipped.  You can check out the contents list here and on Black Dog Books' website.

And while technically it has nothing to do with the convention, I thought I'd mention that after a hiatus of 15 years, PULP VAULT #14 will make its debut appearance at the convention -- nearly 300 pages of pulp goodies.  Click here or here for more details!

We hope to see you at pulp fandom's first party of the year!

Electric Tiki / Sideshow Collectables: DOC SAVAGE STATUE
Coming in August!

Sideshow Collectables and Electric Tiki presents the eighteenth character
in its ongoing tribute to Classic Heroes, Doc Savage!

"He rights wrongs and punishes evildoers." Clark Savage, Jr., aka Doc Savage, first appeared in 1933 in the pages of Doc Savage magazine. Created by Henry W. Ralston and John L. Nanovic for Street and Smith publications, Doc Savage was created to capitalize on the success of another pulp hero, The Shadow. Writer Lester Dent was the first to fully flesh out the character, and artist James Bama gave the "Man of Bronze" the classic appearance he is known for today. Having been trained by a team of scientists from birth, Doc grew to almost superhuman abilities.

Electric Tiki's Doc Savage statue depicts the hero on an icy winter base, featuring the original "Fortress of Solitude." The translucent blue dome reveals a hidden hatch, featuring the Doc Savage logo. Standing 12" tall, Doc Savage is sculpted by Rubén Procopio and Bryan Wynia.

Each cold-cast statue is hand numbered and strictly limited to initial orders.
Scheduled to ship in August 2011.

Subterranean Press: Up the Bright River By Philip Jose Farmer
Now shipping!

Subterranean Press is proud to present a new, roughly 120,000 word gathering of Philip Jose Farmer’s singular tales! This first posthumous collection of the short fiction of Philip Jose Farmer is a celebration of the impressive variety of his prodigious output, from the space adventures he published in the science fiction magazines of the 1950s through the 1970s, to his acerbic satires of religion and medicine, to his fictional biographies and memoirs, to his beloved Riverworld.

Appearing for the first time in a Philip Jose Farmer collection are his last three “Riverworld” stories—featuring characters from his own family history--as well as the “memoir” of Lord Greystoke which he claimed to have merely edited. Other highlights include “Attitudes,” the first of the Father Carmody stories; “The Two-Edged Gift,” which introduces the fictional science fiction writer Leo Queequeg Tincrowdor; “Toward the Beloved City” (about which its original editor said he had never before really understood the Book of Revelations); and “Father’s in the Basement,” a little-known Gothic horror tale which is also a satire of the writing profession.

Farmer created some of the most famous worlds in science fiction, but he also wrote in many worlds, and readers familiar only with his best-known classics may find a few surprises among these tales.

Blood ‘n’ Thunder #28 (Winter 2011)
Now shipping to retailers and subscribers!

The latest issue of Blood ‘n’ Thunder has just been shipped to subscribers and is now available for single-copy purchase. It offers two articles for Doc Savage fans: one covers the 1985 Doc radio series broadcast over National Public Radio, the other reveals sources used (and even plagiarized) by primary series author Lester Dent while writing about the exotic locales in Doc's adventures. A lengthy and detailed piece by Robert O. Erisman, editor of the pulp line published by Marvel Comics owner Martin Goodman, explains how to build a salable pulp story “brick by brick.” BnT editor Ed Hulse writes about Patria, the 1917 movie serial that sparked an international incident. Gary Lovisi and Mark Trost contribute pulp and paperback reviews, and the little-known 1940 comic-book story featuring a thinly disguised Captain Future (renamed Major Mars) is reprinted for the first time anywhere.

With this issue Blood ‘n’ Thunder returns to a quarterly publication schedule, so the price of yearly subscriptions has increased to $40 postpaid—but that’s still 30 percent less than it would cost to buy the four issues separately.

Single copies are available at $11.95 from Ed Hulse at 2467 Route 10, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.  Ed also takes payments via Paypal at bnteditor@yahoo.com.

THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU - Coming in December!
By William Patrick Maynard
Michael Knox is the brash and arrogant assistant of renowned archaeologist Dr. Spiridon Simos. A chance encounter with a beautiful Egyptian woman at Dr. Simos' wedding in Corfu leads the young man on a whirlwind journey to Cairo where he barely survives the terrifying reincarnation of the ancient Pharaoh Khunum-Khufu.

A chain of events quickly unfold that embroils Knox with obsessive British agent, Sir Denis Nayland Smith, and his pursuit of the master criminal, Dr. Fu Manchu. Slowly, the young man begins to piece together the threat posed to the world as Fu Manchu and his seductive, but sadistic daughter Koreani tear the dread secret society, the Si-Fan, apart.

Before Michael Knox can act on the intelligence in his possession, he must first survive death in a myriad of strange guises from a savage gorilla trained to crush a man's spine to the unrelenting pursuit of Margarita, the disarming dwarf assassin who brings terror to the Orient Express, to one thousand poisonous butterflies unleashed at the Munich Conference as Europe teeters on the brink of a Second World War.

As madness sweeps the globe, one hedonistic young man must examine his own life as he realizes the world's future hangs in the balance. The action moves swiftly from Greece to Egypt to Africa to Europe in a breathtaking battle of ideologies as Sax Rohmer's infamous creation seeks to realize THE DESTINY OF FU MANCHU...

MOON OF SKULLS collects Robert E. Howard's fiction and poetry published in Weird Tales Magazine from October 1929 to November 1930, plus one from Oriental Stories. These works represent literary stepping-stones to Howard's infamous Cthulhu mythos stories and his most famous character of all -- Conan the Cimmerian -- and ably demonstrate that each of Howard's stories improved and added to his formidable skills as a master of fantasy and adventure. Continuing the collection of Howard's fiction and poetry in order of publication, Volume Two of The Weird Works of Robert E. Howard picks up where Volume One left off -- at one of the most startling and controversial Howard stories of all: Skull-Face, a potent combination of gothic themes and oriental mystique!

Included in this volume are: "The Gothic Orient," by Mark Finn (introduction), "Skull-Face," "Dead Man’s Hate," "The Fearsome Touch of Death," "A Song out of Midian," "Shadows on the Road," "The Moon of Skulls," "The Hills of the Dead," "Black Chant Imperial," and "The Voice of El-Lil."

March 6th was the anniversary of the birth of the modern hero magazine!
80 years ago, on March 6th, 1931, the first issue of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE appeared on American newsstands. THE SHADOW MAGAZINE was the first modern character/hero magazine, reviving a heroic fiction format that had disappeared decades earlier with the demise of dime novels.

In the pages of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE, wordsmith Walter B. Gibson refashioned the sinister narrator of CBS-Radio's DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE HOUR into the first Dark Hero, creating a crimebusting supersleuth who embodied the iconic power of classic melodrama villains like Dracula. Gibson's novels introduced the concept of super-crooks and super-crime, and became the template for hero pulps and scores of future comic book superheroes, many of which were created by devoted readers of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE including Jerry Siegel, Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. In fact, the 1936 Shadow pulp novel "Partners of Peril" was adapted scene-by-scene and character-for-character, as the first Batman story in DETECTIVE COMICS #27.

In honor of this anniversary, Anthony Tollin's Sanctum Books has just reprinted "The Living Shadow," the debut Shadow novel, and for the first time has restored the original text as it originally appeared in 1931 in the first issue of THE SHADOW MAGAZINE. (The text was revised/updated when it was reprinted in a 1934 hardcover which became the source for future annual and paperback reprints.)

The Movie Serial Companion: Book One - Recommended!
THE MOVIE SERIAL COMPANION Book One is the first of two books about the classic cliffhangers that thrilled the multitudes during the first half of the 20th century. The book starts off with afive-chapter history of America’s film serials that runs for 62 pages and covers both the silent and the sound film eras. The text is easily read, engaging, informative, and insightful. My interest never flagged and I learned many things that I was not previously aware of. For instance, I did not know that most serials had two directors, one shooting while the other prepared the next days work, or one doing location scenes while the other did interiors. Following the beginning chapters of the book is a 225 page annotated listing of the American serials of the silent era. The listing is done alphabetically by serial title. Most of the serials merit at least a full page which includes the date of the serial, the studio, the director(s), a listing of the players, a listing of the chapter titles, a synopsis of the story, and a brief commentary. Each listing is accompanied with numerous stills of scenes from the serial and of the players. Some of the entries also include the one-sheet advertising for the film or magazine covers featuring the serial or its players. Each serial entry averages at least 3-to-4 illustrations. Illustrations are in black and white and full color throughout. All-in-all, this book is obviously a labor of love and a welcome addition to my library. I look forward to the publication of the second book in the series.

Paizo Publishing: PLANET STORIES - Now available!
Battle in the Dawn: The Complete Hok the Mighty
By Manly Wade Wellman with an introduction by David Drake
In the 1930s, a very unusual tale appeared in the influential Amazing Stories magazine. Unlike the usual yarns of robots and interstellar travel, this “Battle in the Dawn” featured the brutal exploits of Hok, the first hero of humanity, in his struggles against the savage Neanderthals. Written by rising pulpster Manly Wade Wellman (Who Fears the Devil?), who would later achieve fame for his American folktales of Silver John and beat out William Faulkner for a prestigious writing award, the story and its brave hero struck a chord with Amazing’s readers, and several additional adventures followed, taking Hok through the prehistory of mankind to battle unrelenting cavemen, explore the lost city of Atlantis, discover new technology, and chart a new destiny for humanity.

Now, for the first time ever, Planet Stories presents a complete authorized collection of all of Wellman’s rare Hok the Mighty tales, packed with unfinished story fragments, all-new illustrations, and a brand new introduction written by Wellman’s longtime friend, fantasy author David Drake!

Full stories include:
Battle in the Dawn
Hok Goes to Atlantis
Hok Draws the Bow
Hok and the Gift of Heaven
Hok Visits the Land of Legends
Day of the Conquerors

Included are "The Love of Oloana," "The Day of the Conquerors" (which, while it doesn't star Hok, does feature Hok's tribe, the Flint People) and the untitled Hok the MIghty story fragment originally published in ECHOES OF VALOR II that Wellman was working on when he died.

Robert E. Howard Days - June 10 & 11, 2011!
As the snows blow cold here in NW Indiana (and most parts of the country, actually) it’s the very best time to turn our thoughts to the warmer upcoming months. Specifically, Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas, is happening once again in 2011 (“officially”) on June 10 & 11. Hope you can make plans to be there. There will be many more details forthcoming this week as we get the REH Days Information Page tuned up for 2011, so hang with us and stay tuned.

This year, under the sponsorship of The Robert E. Howard Foundation and Project Pride of Cross Plains, with assistance from the Robert E. Howard United Press Association, our “theme” is all about Howard History. 2011 marks four unique anniversaries upon which will will devote our festivities. Cross Plains, Texas is already celebrating it’s 100th anniversary as an incorporated town (you can follow this on Facebook right now), it’s the 75th year of honoring the Legacy of REH, it’s the 50th anniversary of Glenn Lord’s benchmark Howard publication, The Howard Collector, and it’s the 25th anniversary of the very first Robert E. Howard Days.

Keeping that history angle in mind, we’ve chosen two Legendary REH publishers to be our Co-Guests of Honor this year: Damon Sasser and Dennis McHaney. Those of you familiar with Howard Fandom will of course recognize Damon and Dennis and we’re happy to have them at Howard Days to talk and be available to their legions of fans. Damon is the publisher of REH: Two-Gun Raconteur (“The definitive Howard Fanzine”) and runs the REH: TGR blog, and Dennis’ The Howard Review is his ultimate claim to fame (among others) in a nearly 40 year career as as a REH publisher. Dennis also runs the biggest REH message board at rehinnercircle.com.

There’s lots more info to come here on the REHupa site, plus there’ll be info at the REH Foundation site, Damon’s TGR blog and Conan.com. We’re in the process of setting up the scheduling for Howard Days, plus there’ll be some truly fantastic events happening if everything falls into place this year. All of the familiar fan-friendly events are still happening: House & Town tours, Banquet & Silent Auction, Swap Meet, Postal Cancellation, Saturday BBQ plus a plethora of interesting panels & hopefully some special events.

Ok, if that’s not enough enticement, keep your radio dial tuned here for updates and more detailed information. In the meantime, shouldn’t you be making your plans to get to Howard Days this year? We’ll be looking for you! Y’all come!

Argonotes - New pulp blog now online!
The stated goal is for the blog to become a gathering place for information concerning a wide variety of twentieth century American ephemeral literature; pulps, certainly, but also dime novels, "penny dreadfuls," "shilling shockers," comic books, and their related ilk. The title of the page comes from "Argonotes," the letters page of the Munsey magazine Argosy (in this case, the scanned banner comes from the December 23, 1933 edition of Argosy All-Story Weekly).

The blog's introductory posts begin with information concerning the individual whom many consider the originator of the pulp magazine industry, Frank A. Munsey. A subsequent post discusses the creation of THE GOLDEN ARGOSY. There are some great photos of the old MUNSEY MAGAZINE offices at the turn of the century.

This is a great blog and one that you should bookmark and not miss!

Bill Preston: A new Old Man story - Now available!
Bill Preston's new Old Man story 'Clockworks'  will be in the big Double Issue of Asimov's Science Fiction magazine that will hit the stands on March 1st. The new story is another Doc Savage type story that takes place in 1962 and takes a close look at some of the elements in the original character that Lester Dent created.  As with his previous story "Helping Them Take the Old Man Down"  serious philosophical and moral issues are raised in a story that is exciting and imaginative.

Thanks to Art Sippo for the tip!

Blackstone Audio: WARLORD OF MARS - Now available!
In this continuation of the saga of the amazing world of Barsoom, the love story of Carter and Dejah Thoris--the red-skinned, oviparous princess--unfolds. Like all the tales in the series, fantasy and adventure combine in a style as malleable as dreams, exotic and dangerous and unending.

For six long Martian months, John Carter, Prince of Helium, has haunted the terrifying Temple of the Sun. Inside the walls of this mysterious revolving tower is his beloved wife, Dejah Thoris, the beautiful princess of Barsoom. Worse yet, his wife is trapped there with the lovely but wicked Phaidor, who has sworn to make John Carter her own--even if it means murder. How can Carter gain access to the temple, whose doors swing open only once a year? And when he does find his way inside, will he find Dejah Thoris' welcoming embrace--or her corpse?

THE SECRET OF ZIPPELIUS by by Jules Lermina, adapted by Brian Stableford
Jules Lermina (1839-1915), the author of Mysteryville, Panic in Paris and To-Ho and the Gold Destroyers, was one of the most interesting authors of French romans scientifiques in the latter part of the 19th century.

This collection includes The Nail (1870), featuring a prodigious detective predating Sherlock Holmes by 20 years, the classic Burn This! (1888), a novella in the vein of Bulwer-Lytton and Talbot Mundy, in which a young Parisian gifted with superhuman mental powers encounters a mysterious Hindu secret society that has inherited the occult science of ancient Atlantis, and the eponymous novella (1893), in which young Conrad Zippelius receives a letter about a mysterious inheritance from a distant relative, one that comes with a secret that could destroy the world!

CHALET IN THE SKY by by Albert Robida, adapted by Brian Stableford
The father of science fiction illustration, and the author of The Clock of the Centuries and The Adventures of Saturnin Farandoul, Albert Robida (1848-1926), was the most significant of all of Jules Verne's successors.

In A Student in 1950 (1917), Robida returns to his fictional world of 1950 that he introduced in his classic The Twentieth Century (1883) and pens an exciting "Boy's Adventure," featuring the teenage students of the pseudo-futuristic School of Chambourcy, an amusing predecessor to Harry Potter's Hogwarts.

In Chalet in the Sky (1925), Robida's last novel and literary "swan song," the author boldly steps forward into the far future when Man has emigrated to other worlds and he depicts the travels of a colorful cast of characters aboard their aerial villa above a bleak and exhausted Earth.

TEEN ANGELS & NEW MUTANTS by Stephen R. Bissette
Writer/artist Rick Veitch's career bridges the underground comix of the 1970s, mainstream DC and Vertigo Comics, and the self-publishing revolution of the 1980s and 1990s. In that extraordinary body of work, Brat Pack® remains a landmark, and Teen Angels & New Mutants is the first book-length, in-depth study of a creator and graphic novel worthy of the autopsy. En route, Teen Angels offers a crash-course on teen pop culture and superhero sidekick history, fresh analysis of Dr. Fredric Wertham's seminal books, ponders real-world "new mutants" like Michael Jackson, The Olsen Twins, and Justin Bieber, and charts the 1980s comicbook explosion and 1990s implosion--and more.

HOBO STORIES By Patrick & Terence Casey
6x9-inch perfect bound; 332 pages, $20.00 postpaid
Introduction by John Locke

Hobos spoke their own language, lived by their own code. Veterans of the road enslaved younger runaways, to use them as servants, to dispatch their innocent faces to back doors to beg. True hobos scorned brethren who accepted work instead of handouts. To do nothing, to pay nothing, was the hobo dream, the true measure of freedom, the true test of authenticity.

Patrick and Terence Casey wrote five stories set in Hoboland--that is, the backroads, railyards, and seedy hobo jungles of America where tramps traveled and congregated. The initial story appeared in THE SATURDAY EVENING POST (1914), the remainder in the leading pulp ADVENTURE (1916-21). Together, they constitute a grand saga of life in a strange, often violent underworld of yesteryear. HOBO STORIES collects the series.

The amazing Caseys . . . they were two brothers from San Francisco who sold regularly to the pulps as teenagers. Soon thereafter, they conned their way into the prestigious pages of ADVENTURE with tales of actual jungles--in Borneo and Central America. Included in HOBO STORIES is a biography of the Caseys, an examination of the roots of their hobo fiction, and, from the pulp ROMANCE (1920), their revelatory short story about the adventures of a teenage pulp writer.

Pulp 2.0 Press: RADIO WESTERN ADVENTURES
Print edition available for pre-order!

Features an unpublished Lester Dent story!

RADIO WESTERN ADVENTURES is a unique blend of nostalgia and hard-hitting western pulp action from the pen of DONALD F. GLUT  (THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, BROTHER BLOOD, and TV’s TRANSFORMERS) and pulp celebrity LESTER DENT  (DOC SAVAGE, THE AVENGER).

The book features the novella “Who Really Was That Masked Man?” — a tall tale about what happens when all of the classic western stars from those thrilling days of yesteryear encounter one another and embark on an six-shooting, whip-cracking adventure. This is the story that fans of western pulp, serials, comics and old time radio have been waiting for years to read!

In addition, the Legendary Lester Dent contributes a never-before-published story “Snare Savvy”  featuring Haw Kain, a slow-talkin’, but quick-witted cowboy from Montana who runs afoul of some greedy land grabbers. There’s also a fast talkin’ gal who catches Haw’s eye, and makes his job of stopping the crooks all the tougher.

This one-of-a-kind western pulp features many exclusive extras:

A comprehensive article on the great radio, comic and serial western adventure heroes (GENE AUTRY, HOPALONG CASSIDY, ROY ROGERS, SUNSET CARSON et al) that influenced the creation of “Who Really Was That Masked Man?” This article is lavishly illustrated with stills of young Don in his childhood cowboy outfits roaming the range of boyish imagination in Chicago.

A tribute to Jim Harmon, the man to whom this book is dedicated. Jim Harmon was a good friend, author and ardent western radio fan, historian and wrote of many books on the subject including the definitive THE GREAT RADIO HEROES.

A gallery of RARE STILLS featuring iconic western stars and autographed to Don Glut.

A behind-the-scenes peek at “Snare savvy” by noted author and pulp historian Will Murray.
and much more!!!

PULP ARK - May 13-15, 2011!
PULP ARK, the Pulp Convention/Creators' Conference debuting May 13-15, 2011 in Batesville, AR, is proud to announce that the event will be held in a location that is a primary part of local history in the historic Arkansas town. Built in 1880, the three story building that will be the home of the first PULP ARK enjoyed life as Batesville's Opera House for eight years. It was renovated and made into a mercantile store after that and then later was home to various other enterprises. It currently houses THE CINNAMON STICK, a coffee and sandwich restaurant. The over 6,000 square feet of space provides not only ample places for tables, displays and guests, but access to the lower level provides an onsite location for panels and classrooms. The lower level, largely untouched since the building's construction, except for electricity being added, served as the dressing area for the various opera stars and performers in the building's original incarnation.

A hotspot of activity, The Cinnamon Stick plays host to musicians, artists, and performers on a weekly basis as well as to customers ranging in age from high school kids to senior citizens. The location, 151 W. Main Street in Downtown Batesville, is surrounded by various amenities. Currently there are three restaurants on the street; The Cinnamon Stick, Elizabeth's, and The Greasy Spoon. These three offer a variety of food and if that were not enough, various other restaurants are within a 1-5 mile radius of the location. Various antique stores, an used book store, a gym, and various other types of businesses line Batesville's historic downtown area.

PULP VAULT #14 - Coming Mid-April!

AFTER A 15 YEAR HIATUS, THE LEGENDARY PULP FANZINE, PULP VAULT
RETURNS WITH ITS LARGEST AND BEST ISSUE YET!

With contributions by Robert Weinberg, Mike Ashley, Will Murray,
David Saunders, Hugh B. Cave, and others!
Sure to be a must-have edition.

Clocking in at over 250 pages, lavishly illustrated, Pulp Vault no. 14
begins with a never before published full color cover by pulp great
Virgil Finlay!

Inside, it’s packed with great articles about, and fiction from, the pulps,  including:

BLUE BOOK—THE SLICK IN PULP CLOTHING by Mike Ashley
This in-depth look at Blue Book is the most detailed article ever on one of the longest lived and important pulps.
In this 21,000 word essay, Mike Ashley explores the history of Blue Book, from its first issue to its final one nearly 70 years later.
Covering a span of 613 issues, this is the definitive study of Blue Book. Profusely illustrated.

THE STRANGE STORIES THAT NEVER WAS by Robert Weinberg
When the fantasy pulp, Strange Stories, folded after its unlucky thirteenth issue, several manuscripts remained in the inventory.
Most eventually saw print in other pulps of the Thrilling chain, such as Thrilling Mystery and Thrilling Adventure.
Robert Weinberg dons his pulp detective hat to track down those stories which, had the magazine continued,
would have made up the next few issues of Strange Stories.

THE THRILL BOOK STORY by Will Murray
One of the scarcest of all pulp titles, few magazines have the aura that legendary The Thrill Book does.
In a lengthy article, Will Murray sheds light on this unique experiment from Street & Smith,
claimed incorrectly by some to be the first fantasy pulp. Illustrated with every cover from this rare pulp.

THE SAGA OF SINGAPORE SAMMY by Rick Lai
Pulp author George Worts created several memorable series characters, among them Peter the Brazen and Gillian Hazeltine.
One of his longest running series concerned South Seas adventure Sam Shea, also known throughout the Orient as Singapore Sammy,
which saw print in Argosy and Short Stories,. His life and adventures are examined here in detail, including a complete chronology.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF NORMAN SAUNDERS by David Saunders
The son of one of pulpdom’s greatest artists, Norman Saunders, looks back at his father’s life and career.

INTRODUCING CYRUS NORTH by D.H. Olson
A detailed study of Donald Wandrei’s scientific detective, Cyrus North, who appeared in Clues Detective Magazine between 1938 and 1939.

ONE OLD-TIMER’S VIEW OF THE PULPS by Hugh B. Cave
One of the giants of the pulp field, Hugh B. Cave penned several articles for Pulp Vault.
Here is the final installment of his reminisces about the pulps, written shortly before he passed away.

THE OUTSIDER AND NO OTHERS by Robert Barbour Johnson
Johnson was a regular contributor to Weird Tales in the 1930s and 1940s, and his “Far Below” is considered a classic.
This is his account of his Weird Tales career, written in the 1970s and intended for
Robert Weinberg’s pulp fanzine, Pulp, but published now for the first time.

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OF GLORY! by J. Edward Leithead
Leithead was one of the leading western pulp writers during the 1920s and 1930s, contributing to the Clayton, Street & Smith and Wyn western pulps, among others. In 1967, he penned an account of his pulp career. Little seen by those in pulp fandom, it’s a fascinating inside look at the pulp world!

FRANKLYN E. HAMILTON by Link Hullar
Frank Hamilton’s wonderful art is known to pulp fans the world around.
His friend Link Hullar contributes an appreciation of pulp fandom’s leading artist, accompanied by several of Frank’s masterful drawings,
appearing here for the first time.

COVERING THE MAN OF BRONZE by Doug Klauba and
ILLUSTRATING THE DOC SAVAGE RADIO SCRIPTS by Tom Roberts
The long awaiting Doc Savage radio scripts finally saw print from Moonstone Books.
The two illustrators for the project discuss the assignment and how they approached this unique opportunity.
Accompanied by preliminary sketches and studies of their Doc Savage work.

THE SPLENDOR OF ASIA by L. Adams Beck
Reprinted from the September 7, 1922 issue of The Popular Magazine, “The Splendor of Asia” is a complete adventure-packed novel set high in the snowy passes of the Himalayan mountains. Lost cities, fabled treasures, the hideous Things that Run—what more could one want from a pulp novel?

THE FLAMING SKULL by Hugh B. Cave

The dates for SerialFest 2011 are now confirmed for May 20-21-22.
It will be held in Ithaca, New York, home of the Pearl White EXPLOITS OF ELAINE serials,
BEATRICE FAIRFAX, MYSTERIES OF MYRA and many more.
Featuring a tour of original serial shooting locations.

Serials in consideration for presentation include:
  • THE TRAIL OF THE OCTOPUS (1919)
  • The remastered original DRUMS OF FU MANCHU
  • The restored DAREDEVILS OF THE WEST
  • The restored Republic serial THE LONE RANGER
  • THE MASKED RIDER (1919)
  • THE NEW ADVENTURES OF TARZAN with Herman Brix
A unique feature planned this year will be a tour of still-existing original serial shooting locations and reconstructions of sets on which serials were shot with possible re-enactments, including undoubtedly a scene from the Squadron's new  MYSTERIES OF MYRA project. Ithaca was chosen as a prime shooting location by early filmmakers because of its wide variety of scenic landscapes such as cliffs and waterfalls which are still there today. Historian Terry Harbin will take you on a trolley tour.

Events will take place at a movie theater and an additional meeting/screening room where discussions with authors and guests and trivia games such as the serial trivia game, staged readings and other live presentations by experts and authors can also take place. No bootleg/cult porn material will be present at the event, which will be classic-cinema history oriented and family-friendly. Further details on the program and location will be forthcoming as soon as we arrange them.

A complimentary serial DVD will be given out to guests who attend dinners.
General admission will be FREE.
Hope to see you there!

The Shadow: The History and Mystery of the Radio Program, 1930-54
Written by Martin Grams, Jr., author of THE GREEN HORNET:
A HISTORY OF RADIO, MOTION PICTURES, COMICS, AND TELEVISION
Coming March 15th , Pre-order now for free shipping!

THE SHADOW -- for the consideration of those who never heard a radio broadcast or read a pulp magazine -- was a supernatural sleuth with a sepulchral chuckle. A detective whose success in tracking down criminals became a popular long-running radio program from 1937 to 1954, after beginning a number of years before as a ghost-like voice introducing a bone-chilling murder play that concluded with a sinister laugh. The program, DETECTIVE STORY MAGAZINE HOUR, premiered in July of 1930 and within a few months, the horror host overshadowed the crime stories, and spawned his own magazine. Ultimately, the pulp stories ceased in 1949 but the radio program out-lasted the magazine for an additional five years.

This 820-page book (authorized through Conde Nast) documents the entire history of the long-running radio program, with rare never-before-seen photographs, interviews with cast and crew, and a carefully organized presentation of the facts. Numerous unexplored aspects of The Shadow are revealed, such as when The Shadow unmasked in the summer of 1931 on stage in St. Louis, the 1935 MacGrgeor & Sollie transcription discs, Jack Benny spoofs (including one that never made it to the air), the department store manager who was mistaken by the kids in the neighborhood of being The Shadow and hid for that particular half-hour so he wouldn't disillusion the children, pulp novels adapted for the radio program, and much more! Through extensive research of original radio scripts, newspapers on microfilm and various archives across the country, this book is sure to please both casual and devoted fans of THE SHADOW.

An extensive episode guide with plot summaries and an index enhance the book's appeal.

"For those who first heard THE SHADOW on the air when radio was young, this book will bring back memories. For those too young to remember the radio show, this is a wonderful introduction. For the collector and historian of old-time radio, there are facts here they may be seeing for the first time. For everyone else, this is a book to treasure."  -- J. Randolph Cox, Editor, DIME NOVEL ROUND-UP

"There are historians and authors who, from time to time, have been quoted on internet message boards, staged panels at conventions and magazine articles -- all borrowing the scholarship of Martin Grams," remarks Terry Salomonson of Audio Classics. "I know for a fact that in the past year, two historians were paid to do write-ups for their magazines, because of their name status, and the editors were unaware that most of the information in those articles [originated from] Martin's books and or phone calls and emails they placed to Martin."

THE SHADOW book will be released on March 31. The suggested retail price is $29.95.

SHADOWS OF NEW YORK by T. J. Glenn - Now available!
In the 1930s, the world stands at the brink of war, Japan is intent on its conquest of China, and criminal masterminds are using the confusion to carve out their own empires. Into this world strides Dr. Shadows.

When his plane was shot down over Korea by the Japanese, Dr. Shadows was nearly killed, being rescued by Korean monks who nursed him back to health with an herbal treatment that turned his skin an ashen gray, but that also gives him a speed and agility unmatched by others. After years of healing and martial arts training, Dr. Shadows is back in New York where he's established the Shadows Foundation for Justice. Through this organization (and with the help of sidekicks Slugger Harris and monk and martial artist Dr. Hoon and perky Lee Han Ku (Hank)) he'll attempt to right wrongs, solve crimes, and defeat crimelords whose greed is spurring the world toward war.

Author Teel James Glenn  creates a pulp-fiction hero who would have been at home with the pulp action characters of the 1930s--Doc Savage, Batman, the Shadow, and Secret Agent X, and who would have battled arch-fiends like Fu Manchu. Glenn's New York is not the glamorous stage for theater and the super-rich, but bars, Chinatown, and secret societies.

Fans of pulp fiction will enjoy the name-dropping of mostly-forgotten characters, and the careful reconstruction of an era that is now in the past and perhaps never fully existed.

As an added incentive, the book is only One Dollar

WARLORD OF MARS: DEJAH THORIS #1 - Arriving in comic shops March 9th!
Written by Arvid Nelson; Art by Carlos Rafael
Covers: Arthur Adams (20%), Paul Renaud (20%), Joe Jusko (20%), Sean Chen (20%) & Alé Garza (20%)

Spinning off from the incredibly successful Dynamite Entertainment Warlord of Mars series, Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #1 will arrive in comic book stores March 2011!

Martians live forever -- everyone knows that. So what was Dejah Thoris doing all those hundreds of years before John Carter arrived? Four hundred years before the events of Warlord of Mars took place, Dejah's nation of Helium was divided into two warring city-states. An unscrupulous overlord from afar encouraged that rivalry to his own advantage, until he discovered a terrible secret from Mars' ancient past beneath Dejah Thoris' capital. A secret to kill for!

"Burroughs left so many tantalizing breadcrumb trails in the first few Mars novels, but he never followed most of them," says writer Arvid Nelson.  "This series is going to follow some of those trails. We're going to see how Dejah Thoris' kingdom of Helium rose to preeminence. We're going to see her first suitor. And we're going to see Dejah herself kick some ass. She's a great character, totally deserving of her own series. It's great having her in a more active role."
