| Jeffrey Catherine Jones - January 10, 1944 to May 19, 2011 Artist Jeffrey Catherine Jones has passed away at age 67 due to complications from severe emphysema and bronchitis. She was cared for during last days and hours by her daughter, Julianna Jones Muth,and Mary Chiz Chisholm. Born Jeffrey Jones, the artist celebrated a long career doing cover paintings for science fiction, fantasy, and horror novels. Well known writers whose work she illustrated covers for include Robert E. Howard, Fritz Leiber, Andre Norton, Roger Zelazny, Jack Williamson, Lin Carter, and Michael Moorcock to name just a few. Her depiction of Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane is considered by many to be the definitive image of the character. She also illustrated a number of comics including "Idyl" for NATIONAL LAMPOON and "I'm Age" for HEAVY METAL as well as working on EPIC ILLUSTRATED, CREEPY, EERIE, and WONDER WOMAN. Jones also shared space with a slew of legendary comics talent in the '70s under the name The Studio – a group which included Michael William Kaluta, Bernie Wrightson, and Barry Windsor-Smith. This year, under the sponsorship of The Robert E. Howard Foundation and Project Pride of Cross Plains, with assistance from the Robert E. Howard United Press Association, our “theme” is all about Howard History. 2011 marks four unique anniversaries upon which will will devote our festivities. Cross Plains, Texas is already celebrating it’s 100th anniversary as an incorporated town (you can follow this on Facebook right now), it’s the 75th year of honoring the Legacy of REH, it’s the 50th anniversary of Glenn Lord’s benchmark Howard publication, The Howard Collector, and it’s the 25th anniversary of the very first Robert E. Howard Days. Keeping that history angle in mind, we’ve chosen two Legendary REH publishers to be our Co-Guests of Honor this year: Damon Sasser and Dennis McHaney. Those of you familiar with Howard Fandom will of course recognize Damon and Dennis and we’re happy to have them at Howard Days to talk and be available to their legions of fans. Damon is the publisher of REH: Two-Gun Raconteur (“The definitive Howard Fanzine”) and runs the REH: TGR blog, and Dennis’ The Howard Review is his ultimate claim to fame (among others) in a nearly 40 year career as as a REH publisher. Friends of Old Time Radio Convention -
October 20-23, 2011!
As it has for the past 35 years, the Friends of Old Time Radio
will meet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, N.J., on the third weekend
in October, this year the 20th-23rd, to gather stars and fans to celebrate
dramatic radio. The big difference this year is that it will be
our final convention and we want to go out with the biggest, best convention
we've had in years.No expense will be spared to bring in as many of the living radio acting veterans we can find. We have great historians, directors, authors and actors clamoring to put on their very best programs - and we hope that the annual excuse we hear from so many "I don't have time, I'll get there one of these years" just won't apply. So far, we know that Arthur Anderson, veteran of The Mercury Theater, 29 years as the spokes-leprechaun for Lucky Charms, and author of the definitive history of radio program "Let's Pretend," will direct an episode of this series as his personal sign-off of more than 20 years attending our events. Outstanding actors such as Rosemary Rice of Archie on the radio and I Remember Mama on TV, Tommy Cook of Red Ryder, Nan Warren of Let's Pretend, Richard Herd of Theater 5 and (later) Seinfeld, Will Hutchins of Sugarfoot, legendary X-1 writer George Lefferts, actor/d.j. Michael C. Gwynne, the son of big band leader Frankie Kaye, are already confirmed with many more to come. The convention will as always feature live recreations of classic shows, panel discussions with the stars, music, the biggest nostalgia dealer rooms around, selling movies, TV, hundreds of thousands of hours of old time radio recordings and more, and unique opportunities to directly interact with the stars and ask about their amazing careers. No one is behind a velvet rope charging for autographs at Friends of Old Time Radio. The stars are having just as much fun as you are, if not more. The program is split between a day session that lasts from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and features many of the panels and discussions, as well as live recreations. The evening program includes a buffet dinner followed by two recreations as well as awards to the special guests and raffles and the like. We try to make the dinner recreations our most star-studded, exciting theater. The guests are distributed across the tables at dinner, so you will always have at least one celebrity at your table. Dinner rates are inclusive of the day rates. We haven't set final pricing yet but in recent years, the day admission has been $25 ($20 in advance) and dinners ranged from $60 - $75 or so depending on the day, which packages available for people staying for all four days. We're also looking for any old time radio actors or other professionals such as writers, sound effects specialists, producers, casting agents, etc., who are interested in attending to contact us. |

May 13-15, 2011! PULP ARK, the Pulp Convention/Creators' Conference debuting May 13-15, 2011 in Batesville, AR, is proud to announce that the event will be held in a location that is a primary part of local history in the historic Arkansas town. Built in 1880, the three story building that will be the home of the first PULP ARK enjoyed life as Batesville's Opera House for eight years. It was renovated and made into a mercantile store after that and then later was home to various other enterprises. It currently houses THE CINNAMON STICK, a coffee and sandwich restaurant. The over 6,000 square feet of space provides not only ample places for tables, displays and guests, but access to the lower level provides an onsite location for panels and classrooms. The lower level, largely untouched since the building's construction, except for electricity being added, served as the dressing area for the various opera stars and performers in the building's original incarnation. A hotspot of activity, The Cinnamon Stick plays host to musicians, artists, and performers on a weekly basis as well as to customers ranging in age from high school kids to senior citizens. The location, 151 W. Main Street in Downtown Batesville, is surrounded by various amenities. Currently there are three restaurants on the street; The Cinnamon Stick, Elizabeth's, and The Greasy Spoon. These three offer a variety of food and if that were not enough, various other restaurants are within a 1-5 mile radius of the location. Various antique stores, an used book store, a gym, and various other types of businesses line Batesville's historic downtown area. SCHEDULE FOR PULP ARK NOTE-This is the schedule as of today. VOTING HAS BEGUN!
Pulp Ark Coordinator Tommy Hancock notified ALL PULP today that
the nomination period for the first annual Pulp Ark Awards ended on January
31st, 2011, and the final ballot formed from 66 nominations was released
today! The awards for excellence in the Pulp field for 2010 cover
nine categories and multiple authors, artists, publishers, and titles
were represented in the nomination process. Each person who made
a nomination received a ballot for voting. Hancock reported as of
press time that more than half of the ballots had already been completed
and returned. Voting is open until all 66 ballots are completed
or February 28, 2011 at 11:59 PM, whichever comes first. Once the
voting is complete, the winners will be announced and Hancock encourages
all nominees and winners to attend PULP ARK May 13-15, 2011 in Batesville,

THE SERIALFEST 2011 FILM FESTIVAL -
May 20-21-22, 2011!
The dates for
SerialFest 2011 are now confirmed for May 20-21-22.
It will be held in Ithaca, New York, home of the Pearl White EXPLOITS OF ELAINE serials, BEATRICE FAIRFAX, MYSTERIES OF MYRA and many more. Featuring a tour of original serial shooting locations. Serials in consideration for presentation include:
Events will take place at a movie theater and an additional meeting/screening room where discussions with authors and guests and trivia games such as the serial trivia game, staged readings and other live presentations by experts and authors can also take place. No bootleg/cult porn material will be present at the event, which will be classic-cinema history oriented and family-friendly. Further details on the program and location will be forthcoming as soon as we arrange them. A complimentary serial DVD will be given out to guests who attend dinners. General admission will be FREE. |
