David L. Golemon: LEGACY - An Event Group Thrill - Now available! The United States is ready to make a triumphant return to the moon, striking out boldly into the solar system in an attempt to regain the confidence of the heady days of the Apollo program. The first of what are to be many missions to the lunar surface was designed to find the frozen water needed to prepare to build a base to launch an assault on Mars. But a shocking discovery at Shackleton Crater brings the first Prometheus mission to an abrupt halt. Remote robots uncover human skeletal remains and a base that had been destroyed countless millennia ago. The information is sent back to earth where forensic analysis at NASA reveals the corpse to be over seven hundred million years old. A secret this devastating cannot be kept forever, and the news is leaked to the world. Soon nations are thrown into a head-long collision, pitting governments against their own citizens as the flames of fundamentalism start a conflagration that threatens to engulf the world as a race to return the moon is on. The Event Group is tasked to unravel the mystery and to offer something that can either explain our ancient visitor or, at least, keep the world from descending into chaos. Colonel Jack Collins once again leads a team of the world's greatest scientists and philosophers on a journey that will take the Event Group to the airless world of space. But while a battle rages over the truth of our heritage, the Event Group realizes that this may not be humanity’s war alone. Could something else—someone else—be coming to finish a war that they started almost a billion years ago? The Lone Ranger -
Disney shuts down feature film! According to THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, Disney has shut down production of The Lone Ranger that was to star Johnny Depp. The project was set to begin shooting in the fall and was scheduled to be released in December 2012. Reportedly, the halt is due to budgetary concerns, not creative differences. The studio is said to have given director Gore Verbinski a firm budget number but the director balked. One concern for the studio is that even though Depp is the biggest star in the world, the project is a western, and the western genre does not appear to have mass appeal based on the recent showing of Cowboys & Aliens. |

Lovecraft is Missing Book 5: Far Off Drums
- Begins Friday, September 2, 2011! The mysteries begin to unfold as Nan Mercy, Win Battler and Father Munsford Jackey delve deeper into the disappearance of an obscure pulp fiction writer in 1926. Cosmic horror and pulse-pounding adventure swirl around the multiple factions moving towards an as-yet unknown goal, with the only certainty being that the result is not in the best interests of humanity. Is Lovecraft the key to defeating the evil, or is he merely a pawn in a larger game that somehow centers around his creations? Or is there a more terrible truth waiting to be uncovered? Lovecraft is Missing is a pulp adventure webcomic inspired by the writings of H.P. Lovecraft. In 1926, three people –a librarian, a young pulp writer and a priest- are brought together around the circumstances involving the disappearance of a writer whom none of them have ever met. The more they dig, the more they learn about the cosmic evil threatening the world---and their own personal connections to it. Lovecraft is Missing first went live on the web in October, 2008; there are now 134 pages up, along with three years worth of blogs, reviews of horror fiction and films, plus enough oddities to entertain even the most jaded reader. Larry Latham writes and illustrates Lovecraft is Missing, drawing on his life-long love of weird fiction, comic books and animation for his unique style. Lovecraft is Missing is the winner of the 2009 Digital Strips Best New Webcomic award and the 2010 Comic Monsters Best Horror Web Comic award. You can follow Lovecraft is Missing on Facebook and @Munsford on Twitter. |

The invited guest list looks great so far, led by Ethel and Albert star/creator Peg Lynch. I know everyone will enjoy seeing the great Simon Jones ("Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy") again. The Mercury Theater's Arthur Anderson, WXYZ veteran Elaine Hyman ("The Lone Ranger"), ABC announcer Bill Owen and Gloria McMillan (Harriet Conklin on Our Miss Brooks) are also back for more. Local New York talk show legend Joe "Nostalgia King" Franklin will recreate his show live on stage, bringing his own surprises guests along. Another great returning guest is Ivan Curry, star of "Bobby Benson and the B-Bar B Riders" on old time radio. The guest list changes frequently, so keep checking the website for updates. In addition, Pulp entertainment scholars Anthony Tollin and Martin Grams, Jr. will both host original presentations on pulp entertainment and radio. Thursday - Sunday programs include an afternoon program that consists of a recreation, panel discussions and dealer rooms. The evening program features a buffet dinner in which there is at least one special guest at each table and all-star recreations. It's a great way to socialize with the stars as well as see them perform. On Sunday, there is a buffet breakfast and panel with remaining guests. Shows scheduled for recreation this year include Let's Pretend, Easy Aces, Gunsmoke, My Favorite Husband, Ethel and Albert, Phil Harris/Alice Faye, Lights Out, and more. Friends of Old Time Radio Convention - October 20-23, 2011!
As it has for the past 35 years, the Friends of Old Time Radio
will meet at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Newark, N.J., on the third weekend
in October, this year the 20th-23rd, to gather stars and fans to celebrate
dramatic radio. The big difference this year is that it will be
our final convention and we want to go out with the biggest, best convention
we've had in years. No expense will be spared to bring in as many of the living radio acting veterans we can find. We have great historians, directors, authors and actors clamoring to put on their very best programs - and we hope that the annual excuse we hear from so many "I don't have time, I'll get there one of these years" just won't apply. So far, we know that Arthur Anderson, veteran of The Mercury Theater, 29 years as the spokes-leprechaun for Lucky Charms, and author of the definitive history of radio program "Let's Pretend," will direct an episode of this series as his personal sign-off of more than 20 years attending our events. Outstanding actors such as Rosemary Rice of Archie on the radio and I Remember Mama on TV, Tommy Cook of Red Ryder, Nan Warren of Let's Pretend, Richard Herd of Theater 5 and (later) Seinfeld, Will Hutchins of Sugarfoot, legendary X-1 writer George Lefferts, actor/d.j. Michael C. Gwynne, the son of big band leader Frankie Kaye, are already confirmed with many more to come. The convention will as always feature live recreations of classic shows, panel discussions with the stars, music, the biggest nostalgia dealer rooms around, selling movies, TV, hundreds of thousands of hours of old time radio recordings and more, and unique opportunities to directly interact with the stars and ask about their amazing careers. No one is behind a velvet rope charging for autographs at Friends of Old Time Radio. The stars are having just as much fun as you are, if not more. The program is split between a day session that lasts from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and features many of the panels and discussions, as well as live recreations. The evening program includes a buffet dinner followed by two recreations as well as awards to the special guests and raffles and the like. We try to make the dinner recreations our most star-studded, exciting theater. The guests are distributed across the tables at dinner, so you will always have at least one celebrity at your table. Dinner rates are inclusive of the day rates. We haven't set final pricing yet but in recent years, the day admission has been $25 ($20 in advance) and dinners ranged from $60 - $75 or so depending on the day, which packages available for people staying for all four days. We're also looking for any old time radio actors or other professionals such as writers, sound effects specialists, producers, casting agents, etc., who are interested in attending to contact us. |

Hamilton/Brackett
Day - October 15, 2011! Organizer Don Sutton and the Kinsman Historical Society have selected October 15, 2011 as the date for the re-named "Hamilton/Brackett Day." Haffner Press will send and post updates as they become available, but the approach this year is to acknowledge the efforts of *both* Ed & Leigh. The date has been moved from the middle of summer to the third Saturday in October. This year there will be a mini Star Wars Convention. The 501 Garrison was invited and a number of vendors have shown interest. There will be a costume contest for the kids. There will also be a world premier of their personal slide collection, a toast a their gravesite and much more. Edmond Hamilton & Leigh Brackett Day has a Facebook page that will be updated with new information as it becomes available. |

Hard Case Crime - Big relaunch
in September! First off, we're only a bit more than a month away from Hard Case Crime's big relaunch. Our first two new titles in over a year come out on September 20th, and our next two arrive on October 4th: GETTING OFF by Lawrence Block, QUARRY'S EX by Max Allan Collins, THE CONSUMMATA by Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins, and CHOKE HOLD by Christa Faust. We've already started seeing some early reviews online and I'm delighted to see that people are really enjoying the books. MIchael Rogers of Library Journal, for instance, is halfway through reading THE CONSUMMATA and just blogged "It's a blast." And blogger Julia Barrett wrote this about GETTING OFF: "Occasionally I watch a movie or read a book that makes such a deep and lasting impression [that] I can’t stop thinking about it...Well, GETTING OFF did it to me. Last night was the first time in ages a book has kept me up all night." If you'd like a little taste of each book, you can find sample chapters and cover art for all four on our Web site, www.hardcasecrime.com. If you would like to pre-order the books -- either in physical or e-book editions -- you can do so by clicking on the "Order Now" link for each book (or by going directly to your favorite local or online bookseller). A number of you have asked us if our new publisher, Titan Books, will be offering a subscription service along the lines of the "Hard Case Crime Book Club" that our old publisher, Dorchester Publishing, used to offer. Titan has told us they would like to do so -- but it's not something they've ever done before, and they're still looking into how they could pull it off. As soon as we get a definitive answer from them, we'll let everyone on our mailing list know. In the meantime, though, I doubt they'll have it up and running in the next month...so if you'd like to get our new books delivered by mail when they're published, pre-ordering them is your best bet. For those of you in or around New York City, there's another option, which is to pick up copies in person at the relaunch event we're holding the evening of Wednesday, September 21, at the Mysterious Bookshop. The Mysterious Bookshop is one of the oldest and best-respected mystery booksellers in the world, run by the legendary Otto Penzler, and we're thrilled that he's invited us to unveil our new titles in his store. Lawrence Block will be there to sign copies of GETTING OFF, and Christa Faust will be there from the West Coast to sign copies of CHOKE HOLD. I'll be there, too, and I'll be inviting other Hard Case Crime authors to come. We'd love to see you there, if you happen to be in the vicinity and can make it. The event will probably start around 6 or 7pm (the time hasn't been nailed down yet), and the store is at 58 Warren Street, just off West Broadway. I realize most of you reading this message aren't anywhere near NYC and won't be able to come -- but for those of you who are, I hope you stop by. In other news, we've announced our next 2012 title: BLOOD ON THE MINK, by science fiction grandmaster Robert Silverberg. This is one of his rare non-science fiction novels, and in fact may be his rarest novel, period -- it has never been published in book form, only in the final issue of an old pulp magazine called TRAPPED DETECTIVE STORIES half a century ago. It's a terrific story about counterfeiters and the federal agent who goes undercover to bring them down, and it features a great cover painting by Michael Koelsch. You can check it out when you visit our Web site. Finally, I wanted to remind you that the second season of the TV series "Haven" -- inspired by the book Stephen King wrote for Hard Case Crime, THE COLORADO KID -- recently started airing on SyFy. It's on Friday nights at 10pm here in New York, and it's just been getting better and better. I've been lucky enough to get to work on the show and I can tell you there are some good stories coming. So if you haven't started watching it yet and you find yourself with some free time on a Friday night...check it out. You'll be glad you did. And when September 20 comes and you start reading our new books...let us know what you think. Can't wait. Best, Charles Ardai Editor, Hard Case Crime |

Pulp Magazines Project - Now online! The Pulp Magazines Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The Project also provides information on the history of this important but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists, and their publishers. At the heart of the Project's mission is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with a modest library of five representative first-generation pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines will be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually, the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923 titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946. The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between communities of collectors, fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines, and will offer opportunities for research and collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences and conventions, and promote new working relationships between academics and the hundreds of pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and university. |
