   | 2013 Windy City Pulp Convention
   April 12-14, 2013

            March
Update:Well, 31 days from now we'll be in the middle of the 2013 Windy City
Pulp and Paper Convention.  This one is shaping up to be our largest
yet, and with an expanded dealers room, we've sold out of all 150 tables
(or, put another way, placed end to end we could line 3 football fields).
We're nearly done shooting the over 200 lots of material from the collection
of Jerry Weist for our Friday night auction, and will be posting the
remaining images soon.

If you haven't made your hotel reservations at the Westin Lombard
yet, there are 12 days left in order to get the convention rate -- the
cutoff is 5:00 p.m. Central time on March 25, 2013.
The hotel's direct link for our convention is: https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/5324
 We'll hope to see
you in April! The clock is ticking towards
pulp fandom's first big party of the year -- the 2013 Windy City
Pulp and Paper Convention.      The con will run from April
12-14, 2013 (with the con suite opening the night of April 11),
and will be at the same hotel as the last several, the Westin Lombard
Yorktown Center in Lombard, IL. The last two years our dealer
room has had 141 tables and we're going with the same configuration
this year.     Based on the last two years, we should sell out
of wall tables in early January, and island tables in early February,
so if you've been thinking of getting a table at the convention,
please let us know as soon as possible!

This year's themes will celebrate the 80th anniversaries of science
fiction and fantasy magazines (using as our starting point
Weird Tales for fantasy and the scientifiction issue of Science
& Invention for SF), as well as the 100th anniversary of
 Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu.

Those themes will be the focus of our film programming, once
again being assembled by Blood 'N' Thunder's Ed Hulse, as well
as our art show, program book and evening panels.

If you have any appropriate art that you'd be willing to make
available for display, please let me know.  And we're
still looking for more material for the program book, which
once again is in the hands of Tom Roberts of Black Dog Books
(and if you'd like to place an ad in the program book, the deadline
      is March 5, 2013).

Our Friday night auction will once again feature material from
the estate of Jerry Weist, but this time most of the material
will be from Jerry's personal collection (as well as a few lots
from the warehouse find that has been the focus of the last few
year's auctions).       As many of you know, Jerry collected for
condition, and there are some beautiful pulps among the over 1100
items that will be spread across 200 lots.     We're in the process
of photographing and scanning, and have 41 lots currently available
for viewing on our website and Facebook page -- check them out!
        More will be added soon.

Among the highlights of the auction are over 80 issues of ALL-STORY,
including 16 issues with ERB (including 3 installments
of his first story, UNDER THE MOONS OF MARS), a complete run
of PLANET STORIES in great condition, 11 stunning issues of REAL DETECTIVE
TALES AND MYSTERY STORIES, a rare publisher's bound copy of OVERLAND
MONTHLY featuring 2 stories and 2 poems by CLARK ASHTON SMITH
(including his first published story and first published poem),
items from the files of the Gernsback magazines, early issues of
BLUE BOOK, and tons more.

If you're planning on staying at the hotel, the deadline for
booking rooms and getting the convention rate is 5:00 pm Central
      on March 25, 2013.
You can book online at the website the hotel set up for
 us:     https://www.starwoodmeeting.com/Book/5324
 You can also find
the link on our website and Facebook page.

 We look forward
to seeing you at the convention!

   | A. Hyatt Verril - Stories needed!
 A. Hyatt Verrill (1871-1954) was a prolific author including
106 books, mixed with fiction and nonfiction. He also wrote perhaps fifty
  stories for the Pulps.

Doug Frizzle has been researching the life and work of Hyatt Verrill for
   almost a decade.
His blog, Stillwoods.Blogspot.Com, features hundreds of periodical
stories from this explorer, inventor, and artist.
These are provided to ‘Family’ and fans of the author, with thousands
accessing the stories monthly.

Doug is aware that he is missing just a few fiction works by this author.
These stories are important to our knowledge of the author.
The magazine issues appear to be quite rare.

Can anyone help Doug collect these rare stories?
All I\that is required is handheld, legible, images of the complete stories.
Any help, even leads to sources is appreciated.

If anyone can help out, please contact Doug at frizzle@hfx.eastlink.ca

 Doc Savage:
SKULL ISLANDEighty years ago in February, 1933 the Street &
Smith company released the first issue of Doc Savage Magazine,
introducing one of the most popular and influential pulp superheroes
ever to hit the American scene. Doc Savage was the greatest adventure
and scientist of his era, and while his magazine ended in 1949, he
influenced the creators of Superman, Batman, Star Trek, The Man
from UNCLE and the Marvel Universe—to name only a few.By Will Murray
 Softcover edition is now available!
 Hardcover edition can be pre-ordered!
 Ebook editions are now available!

While that first issue of Doc Savage was fresh on Depression
newsstands,        Universal Studios released one of the most
important fantasy films of all time. Everyone       knows
the story of how King Kong was discovered on Skull Island and hauled
back to New York in chains, only to perish tragically atop the world’s
tallest   skyscraper, the Empire State Building.

As it happened, that was where Doc Savage had his world headquarters.
For decades, fans have wondered: Where was Doc the day Kong
 fell?

On the eightieth anniversary of these fictional giants, Altus
Press is proud to release the first authorized clash between
The Man of Bronze and the Eighth Wonder of the World—Doc Savage:
Skull Island.Written by Will Murray in collaboration with Joe
DeVito, creator of KONG: King of Skull Island, Doc Savage: Skull
Island is a new pulp epic.

The story opens when Doc returns from his Fortress of Solitude
in the North Pole to discover the cold corpse of Kong lying
on his doorstep.

“I know this creature,” he tells his dumbfounded men.

Tasked to dispose of the remains, the Man of Bronze then tells
the untold story of his epic encounter with Kong back in 1920,
after Doc returns from service in World War I, long before
  Kong became King Kong.

Doc Savage: Skull Island is a multi-generational story in which
Doc and his father—the man who placed him in the hands of scientists
who made him into a superman—sail to the Indian Ocean in search
of Doc’s grandfather, the legendary Stormalong Savage, whose famous
ship has been discovered floating, deserted, her masts snapped by
some incredible force.

The quest for Stormalong Savage leads to the fog-shrouded
Indian Ocean—and Skull Island! There, Doc Savage faces his first
great test as he encounters its prehistoric dangers and tangles
  with the towering, unstoppable Kong.

“When Joe DeVito brought this idea to me,” says Will Murray,
“I knew it had to be written with reverence for both of these immortal
characters. So I used the locale of Skull Island to tell a
larger story, an untold origin for Doc Savage. It all started back
 on Skull Island….”

Doc Savage: Skull Island has already been hailed as “The Doc
Savage novel that Doc fans have been waiting on for 80 years!”

Doc Savage: Skull Island is will be released in March, as the
fifth entry in Altus Press’ popular Wild Adventures of Doc Savage
 series. Cover by Joe DeVito.

   | Blogging Sax Rohmer’s The Trail
of Fu Manchu, Part Three  - Now online! Sax Rohmer’s The Trail of Fu Manchu was originally serialized in
Collier’s from April 28 to July 14, 1934. It was published in book form
later that year by Cassell in the UK and Doubleday in the US. The book marked
the first time Rohmer employed third person narrative in the series and
dispensed with the first person narrative voice modeled on Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories. The results dilute what would otherwise
have been a stronger novel that saw the series return to its roots.

   | The Book Palace: KING SOLOMON'S MINES by H. Rider
Haggard - Now available!
Three collected British comic strips that boast the talents
of Jesus Blasco, Mike Hubbard, Cecil Doughty, Bill Baker and John Millar
Watt !! The strips are reproduced from the original artboards and have
never looked better.

Gathered together are three classic adaptations behind a Millar Watt cover:
King Solomon's Mines, Allan Quatermain and Montezuma's Daughter, each
written by H Rider Haggard, the father of the lost-world genre.

King Solomon's Mines is one of the most famous of all adventure novels:
adventurer Allan Quatermain is asked to help find his friend's brother who
is presumed lost deep in the unexplored interior of Africa whilst looking
for the legendary King Solomon's Mines. The artwork is some of Bill Baker's
best and one wonders why the equally talented C. L. Doughty took over part-way
 through.

Allan Quatermain: in mourning for his only son, Quatermain persuades his
friends (jncluding Zulu chief Umslopogas) to accompany him into Maasai
territory. Travelling by canoe, they find themselves in the kingdom of
Zu-Vendis, a country ruled by an isolated warlike white race … The artwork
in line & wash by Mike Hubbard.

Montezuma's Daughter: superbly adapted and penned by Jesus Blasco, Thomas
Wingfield sets off to avenge the murder of his mother. After a brush
with the Spanish Inquisition, shipwreck and slavery, his search leads
him to the shores of Mexico where he is captured by the Aztecs. He is
taken to the emperor who will decide hios fate. Then the Spaniards arrive
…

‘The Man of Bronze’ - Doc Savage was created by publisher Henry W. Ralston
and editor John L. Nanovic at Street and Smith Publications, with additional
works by Lester Dent. Doc’s popularity transcended the pulps moving into
radio, comic books, and a feature film. Doc has been interpreted by some
of the greatest artists. This beloved adventurer is considered to be the
model for the ‘super hero’ with his strength, intelligence, speed, physique,
and wealth – he even has a ‘Fortress of Solitude’. The name Doc Savage is
synonymous with courage, danger, and adventure - remaining a heroic pop-culture
 icon to this day.

For the first time ever, Executive Replicas and Go Hero are proud to present
the first ever Doc Savage 1:6th scale action figure. Now you can superamalgamate

   | Pandemonium - Now available!By Warren Fahy

Deep beneath the Ural Mountains, in an underground city carved
out by slave labor during the darkest hours of the Cold War, ancient
caverns hold exotic and dangerous life-forms that have evolved
in isolation for countless millennia. Cut off from the surface world,
an entire ecosystem of bizarre subterranean species has survived
undetected—until now.

Biologists Nell and Geoffrey Binswanger barely survived their last
encounter with terrifying, invasive creatures that threatened to engulf
the planet. They think the danger is over until a ruthless Russian
tycoon lures them to his underground metropolis, where they find themselves
confronted by a vicious menagerie of biological horrors from their
past—and by entirely new breeds of voracious predators. Now they’re
rising up from the bowels of the Earth to consume the world as we
know it.

USA Today praised Warren Fahy's debut novel, Fragment, as “a rollicking
tale [that] will enthrall readers of Jurassic Park and The Ruins.”
Now Fahy sets off an even more thrilling stampede of action and suspense,
bursting forth from the hellish depths of...Pandemonium.

   | PULP ARK 2013 !  APRIL 26-28TH, 2013

Pro Se Productions, a leading publisher of Heroic and Action/Adventure
Fiction as well as the Founder and organizer of Pulp Ark, a writer's
conference/convention that began in Batesville, AR in 2011 announces
today the dates for the third annual event, PULP ARK 2013 as well as a
change of venue.

Pulp Ark is a Writer's Conference/Convention focused on 'Pulp' fiction.
Although defined narrowly by many, Pulp Ark promotes Pulp Fiction as
multi genre multi medium storytelling that typically involves action,
adventure, larger than life heroes and villains, and a strong focus on
both plot and characterization.  "Pulp," Hancock said, "began as
a medium in which many great writers told a lot of wonderful stories
and readers could pick 'em up a 100 or more pages at a time for a dime.
Although it's no longer that necessarily, the sensibilities of Pulp storytelling,
the style, the methodology, all the stuff fans have remembered and enjoyed
for over 80 years about those kinds of tales, all of that is still around
and available from all sorts of authors, artists, performers and companies.
That is what Pulp Ark is all about."

"Pulp Ark 2013," stated Tommy Hancock, Pulp Ark Organizer, "will take
place in a new facility and a new town, but remains in Arkansas!
Batesville, Arkansas (the site of the first two Pulp Ark conventions)
has been nothing but a positive experience for Pulp Ark and the success
we've had there, particularly in 2012, is one of the myriad reasons we
decided to make a move.  Pulp Ark 2012 cemented for us the fact that
not only would we have faithful vendors and guests willing to return for
another go around or two, but that we also had a concept that appealed
to fans of all ages and genres and mediums.   With that, the decision
was either to grow or not.   Part of the decision to grow was
whether or not to stay in Batesville.  Several factors, most notably
partnering with an excellent facility that truly will take Pulp Ark to
another level, led us to decide that the home of Pulp Ark 2013 would be
Springdale, Arkansas."

Springdale is in Washington County located in Northwest Arkansas.
Considered part of the Fayetteville Metropolitan Area, Springdale is one
town of several that are considered a piece of one of the fastest growing
metropolitan areas in the country.  With over 500,000 residents
in and near Springdale, Pro Se believes that not only will this increase
fan attendance and interest in the Writer's Conference/Convention that
blends every genre and medium possible together, but will also attract
both the loyal guests and vendors from the first two years of Pulp Ark
as well as a whole host of new participants on that side of the table.

"Pulp Ark is a wonderfully unique creature in a lot of ways,"
Hancock stated.  "We definitely enjoy having that small town, almost
family type feel for what we do, but we also have a truly kaleidoscopic
reach with all the genres and creators that fall into our umbrella.
Prose, comics, audio, cosplay, even music, all of that and more contributes
to what Pulp is.  New books, clasisc pulp mags, golden and silver
age comic art originals, and more... Classic, new, and even Pulp yet
to come all has a home at our convention and it was time to move Pulp
Ark to a place where it...and all its wonderful supporters...could truly
spread their wings."

Pulp Ark 2013 will be held in Springdale, Arkansas April 26-28, 2013
at the Holiday Inn Springdale Hotel and Convention Center in Springdale,
Arkansas, 1500 South 48th Street, phone number- 1-479-751-8300.  For
a peek at the venue, click HERE!

PULP ARK 2013 GUESTS OF HONOR
 REVEALED!

Pulp Ark 2013, the Official New Pulp
Creators' Conference/Convention in its third year announced today its Three
Guests of Honor for the Third year of the convention to be held in Springdale,
    AR.
"Pulp," Tommy Hancock, Pulp Ark Organizer and Partner in
Pro Se Productions, the company sponsoring Pulp Ark, "is a marvelous, massively
diverse field...a style that has transcended its origins in the early
20th Century in cheaply printed magazines and found its way into every
medium available to modern fans.  Classic characters and stories are
finding new life with readers and enthusiasts today and new tales centered
around original characters are exploding onto the scene as well.
This year, Pulp Ark 2013 will celebrate the variety that is Pulp in many
ways.     Our Three Guests of Honor most definitely reflect
both the differences and the common denominators in Pulp, both classic
and new, both originals of today and inspirations of yesteryear.

 I am extremely
proud to announce that Joe Devito, Martin Powell, and Paul Bishop will be the Guests of Honor for
   Pulp Ark 2013 this year!"

An avid writer, Joe is also the co-author (with Brad Strickland)
of two novels, which he illustrated as well. The first, KONG: King

A fearless Avenger for Justice atop a blazing steed!  The
explosive blast of six-guns filling the air, punctuated by the sharp crack
of a whip!   A mask protecting the identity of someone fighting for
Right in the Old West!   All the elements to make a fantastic Pulp story
came together decades ago in tales crafted by a prolific Pulp Writer.
Now PULP OBSCURA, an imprint of Pro Se Productions in conjunction with Altus
Press, proudly presents three new tales of this groundbreaking character
from Pulp’s Golden Era!

Pulp Obscura’s THE NEW ADVENTURES OF SENORITA SCORPION, featuring Les
Savage, Jr.’s Masked Mistress of the Range is now available, adding another
stellar star to the lineup of classic, but often forgotten or underrated
heroes now living again in Pro Se’s exciting imprint!

Created by Savage in 1944 for Action Stories, Senorita Scorpion is in
fact Elgera Douglas, a young lady who became a legendary outlaw defending
her family's land and legacy, the fabled Lost Santiago Mine. Beautiful and
deadly. A crack shot. A Fast thinking, daring fighter who is ruthless to those
who threaten the land and people under her protection!

“Senorita Scorpion,” stated Tommy Hancock, Editor in Chief of Pro Se Productions,
“is a wonderful character on several levels with so much potential.
Masked heroes in the Wild West have a special place in the heart of fans
of all sorts, from Pulps to old time radio to television and beyond.
Senorita Scorpion fits right into the category.  Then add in the
fact that not only is this a female lead character created at a time when
that wasn’t done very often, but that she was written to be as strong
and capable as the very men she stood against.   Les Savage,
Jr. gave Pulp fiction a heroine that is just as relevant now as she was

 | Sequential Pulp To Publish Edgar Rice Burroughs' JUNGLE TALES OF TARZAN Graphic Novel

Sequential Pulp Comics is proud to
announce a new graphic novel based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novel,
 Jungle Tales of Tarzan.

The one hundred and forty four page graphic novel will
be authorized by ERB, Inc. through Sequential Pulp’s distribution
arrangement with Dark Horse Comics. The book will be designed as an
anthology collecting the twelve loosely connected short stories written
by Edgar Rice Burroughs chronicling the life of his most famous character,
Tarzan of the Apes. All the events of the original work take place
within chapter eleven of Tarzan of the Apes between Tarzan’s avenging
of his ape foster mother’s death and his becoming the leader of his
ape tribe. The original stories ran in Blue Book magazine from September
1916 through August 1917 prior to the book’s publication in 1919.

Writer Martin Powell will helm the graphic novel. Powell
is well known for his work as the author of hundreds of science fiction,
mystery, and horror stories. He has worked in the comic book industry
since 1986, writing for Marvel, DC, Malibu, Caliber, Moonstone, and
Disney, among others, and has been nominated for the coveted Eisner
Award. He is also a respected and award winning author of children’s
books, and frequently contributes prose for many short story anthologies.
He resides in Saint Paul, MN.

Along with Powell, Sequential Pulp is bringing a veritable
who’s who of exciting illustration talent. With an amazing cover
and specialty art by Daren Bader to exciting story art by Pablo Marcos,
Terry Beatty, Will Meugniot, Nik Poliwko, Antonio Romero Olmedo, Mark
Wheatley, Diana Leto, Steven E. Gordon, Lowell Isaac, Tom Floyd and
Jamie Chase. Each story has been matched up with an artist whose passion
and love for Burroughs’ Tarzan and specifically for the story selected
will go a long way towards making this one highly anticipated book in
the Tarzan canon.

Each story will run twelve pages in length and the book
will be in full color. Sequential Pulp is planning a standard trade
paperback and a very limited signature deluxe signed edition.
