 Doc Savage:
SKULL ISLANDEighty years ago in February, 1933 the Street &
Smith company released the first issue of Doc Savage Magazine, introducing
one of the most popular and influential pulp superheroes ever to
hit the American scene. Doc Savage was the greatest adventure and scientist
of his era, and while his magazine ended in 1949, he influenced
the creators of Superman, Batman, Star Trek, The Man from UNCLE and
the Marvel Universe—to name only a few.By Will Murray
Coming to comic shops in July!

While that first issue of Doc Savage was fresh on Depression newsstands,
Universal Studios released one of the most important fantasy
films of all time. Everyone       knows the story of how King
Kong was discovered on Skull Island and hauled back to New York
in chains, only to perish tragically atop the world’s tallest
 skyscraper, the Empire State Building.

As it happened, that was where Doc Savage had his world headquarters.
For decades, fans have wondered: Where was Doc the day Kong fell?

On the eightieth anniversary of these fictional giants, Altus Press
is proud to release the first authorized clash between The Man
of Bronze and the Eighth Wonder of the World—Doc Savage: Skull Island.Written
by Will Murray in collaboration with Joe DeVito, creator of KONG:
King of Skull Island, Doc Savage: Skull Island is a new pulp epic.

The story opens when Doc returns from his Fortress of Solitude in
the North Pole to discover the cold corpse of Kong lying on his
 doorstep.

“I know this creature,” he tells his dumbfounded men.

Tasked to dispose of the remains, the Man of Bronze then tells the
untold story of his epic encounter with Kong back in 1920, after
Doc returns from service in World War I, long before Kong became
  King Kong.

Doc Savage: Skull Island is a multi-generational story in which Doc
and his father—the man who placed him in the hands of scientists
who made him into a superman—sail to the Indian Ocean in search
of Doc’s grandfather, the legendary Stormalong Savage, whose famous
ship has been discovered floating, deserted, her masts snapped by
 some incredible force.

The quest for Stormalong Savage leads to the fog-shrouded  Indian
Ocean—and Skull Island! There, Doc Savage faces his first great
test as he encounters its prehistoric dangers and tangles with
  the towering, unstoppable Kong.

“When Joe DeVito brought this idea to me,” says Will Murray, “I knew
it had to be written with reverence for both of these immortal characters.
So I used the locale of Skull Island to tell a larger story,
an untold origin for Doc Savage. It all started back on Skull Island….”

Doc Savage: Skull Island has already been hailed as “The Doc Savage
novel that Doc fans have been waiting on for 80 years!”

Doc Savage: Skull Island is will be released in March, as the fifth
entry in Altus Press’ popular Wild Adventures of Doc Savage series.
  Cover by Joe DeVito.

 | BEB Books - Now available!

            BEB Books
introduces The
Thrill Book Library.
Plus, two new reprints from the famous
  Secret Agent X series.
 The Thrill Book Library
 THE THRILL BOOK is
one of the prize “gets” in Pulp fandom, if only for its extreme scarcity.
Published by Street and Smith, it ran for sixteen semi-monthly issues from
March thru October of 1919. THE THRILL BOOK
has also sparked interest because it was never certain what kind of magazine
it was intended to be. Some have argued that it was a proto-science
fiction magazine because it published two SF stories by Murray Leinster
and Francis Stevens’ novel, "The Heads of Cerberus". Others, looking
at the stories by Greye Le Spina, Tod Robbins, Perley Poore Sheehan and
others contend that THE THRILL BOOK
was closer to style to WEIRD TALES. Reading through the issues of THE
THRILL BOOK I have been struck by how much good material
was in here. Maybe not all A-list material but a lot of really good and
satisfying stories. Beb Books is undertaking a program to reprint much
of this material in low-cost theme collections. WOLVES
OF THE STEPPE AND OTHER STORIES
is the first in this series.

 The
Thrill Book Library: Wolves of the
Steppe WOLVES OF THE STEPPE reprints every story Greye Le Spina wrote
for The Thrill Book – classics like the title story, “The Wax Doll"
and “The Ultimate Ingredient” as well as “The Hidden Landscape”, and "From
Over the Border.” Rounding out the volume are a trio of stories by other
authors about lethal spiders, cursed butterflies and strangler’s hands.
Seventy pages of fine reading for a low, low $6.00

 The
Thrill Book Library: Down the Coast of Shadows
The second volume from from The Thrill Book Library is DOWN THE COAST
OF SHADOWS AND OTHER STORIES. Perley Poore Sheehan was a very successful
writer in the 19-teens and early twenties.  He mostly wrote for
ALL-STORY MAGAZINE but editor Harold Hersey got him to write two stories
for THE THRILL BOOK, the title story, a novelet and “A Hank of Yarn,”
both fine ghost stories. The Thrill Book published many supernatural stories.
Six of the best round out this volume. This include Edward Lucas White’s
“House of the Nightmare,” Carlton W. Kendall’s “The Fear” and  S.
Carleton’s “The Clasp of Rank.”

Sixty-Five pages of spooky adventures for only $6.00.

 Stay
tuned to this site as more volumes in The Thrill Book Library series are
   released.

 | Critical Insights: Pulp Fiction of the 1920s and 1930s - Coming in May! Outstanding, in-depth scholarship by renowned
literary critics; great starting point for students seeking an introduction
to the theme and the critical discussions surrounding it.

Explores the "weird" and diverse fiction of popular pulp writers such as
H. P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, Clark Ashton Smith, A. Merritt, as well
as pulp magazines such as Weird Tales.

From their origin at the end of the nineteenth century to their decline
in the 1950s, "pulp" magazines entertained the masses with lurid stories
in such genres as adventure, Western, romance, crime, fantasy, horror, and
science fiction. Notable publications, such as Weird Tales, also served as
apprenticeships for many new writers, including H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E.
Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith.

Edited by Gary Hoppenstand, Professor of American Studies at Auburn University
at Michigan State University and editor of the Journal of Popular Culture,
this volume in the Critical Insights series presents a variety of new essays
on the topic of popular pulp fiction and writers of the 1920s and 1930s,
focusing on those major contributors to the Weird Tales school, which not
only included Lovecraft, Howard, and Smith, but also Seabury Quinn, C.L.
Moore, Robert Bloch, August Derleth, and others. For readers who are studying
pulp fiction for the first time, four essays survey the critical conversation
regarding the subject, explore its cultural and historical contexts, and
offer close and comparative readings of key texts. Readers seeking a deeper
understanding can then move on to other essays that explore it in depth through
a variety of critical approaches. Among the contributors are S.T. Joshi,
Jeffrey H. Shanks, Andrew J. Wilson, Garyn Roberts, and Richard Bleiler.

Rounding out the volume are a list of literary works not mentioned in the
book that concern the theme as well as a bibliography of critical sources
for readers seeking to study this timeless theme in greater depth.

Each essay is 2,500 to 5,000 words in length, and all essays conclude with
a list of "Works Cited," along with endnotes. Finally, the volume's appendixes
offer a section of useful reference resources:

 | MARS ATTACKS TRADING CARDS - Topps
to publish a new set of cards in October!
Riding the momentum of the 50th Anniversary of their best-selling
franchise, Topps is proud to announce the first all-new MARS ATTACKS story-based
trading cards in more than half a century!  While paying homage to the
infamous card set that first shocked parents and delighted children in 1962,
Mars Attacks: Invasion will be a bold revival, and will take the property
into exciting new territory.

"Last year's Heritage re-issue was a smash hit with fans,” says Topps' Adam
Levine, who has overseen the recent resurgence of MARS ATTACKS, “and this
brand-new series is what we’ve been building to.  It will be a fresh
re-imagining of the original series and will stay faithful to MARS ATTACKS'
pulpy, classic sci-fi roots.  This means all-new, traditionally hand-painted
cards illustrated by a group of artists carefully selected to carry forward
 creator Norm Saunders' legacy."

The set will boast an impressive roster of talent, from living legend Earl
Norem and master illustrator Joe Jusko, to renowned painters Ed Repka, Glen
Orbik, Gregory Staples and more to be announced.  Artists contributing
to the 63-card story-based portion of the set will each illustrate multiple
cards, with the set being divided into themed subsets that combine to tell
the story of an alien apocalypse unlike any other.

"Topps hasn't done a set like this in more than twenty years,” says series
editor David Waldeck. “It's a return to the days when trading cards hooked
audiences with incredible imagery and imaginative storytelling. We've loaded
the set with everything fans know and love about MARS ATTACKS: giant insects,
flying saucers, ray guns, robots, damsels and death rays!"

Topps will also provide fans with the opportunity to find original 1962
MARS ATTACKS trading cards randomly inserted into packs!  These vintage
trading cards from the most valuable non-sport trading card set in history
have been certified by Topps in 2013 and will be available as rare chase
cards in Mars Attacks: Invasion!

Additional chase subsets and valuable collector-driven inserts will be detailed
in the coming months.   Filled with high levels of sci-fi action
and excessive amounts of bone-chilling gore, this all-new series will surely
thrill long-time fans and legions of new ones in equal measure.

Mars Attacks: Invasion is scheduled for release in October 2013.

 | When we last saw Patricia Wildman, daughter of Doc Wildman, the bronze
champion of justice, six months had passed since the main events of The Evil
in Pemberley House. She and her associate Parker, an ex-Scotland Yard Inspector,
had set up Empire State Investigations at her Pemberley House estate—and
she just received a mysterious phone call from her supposedly late father
. . .

Several months later, Pat receives a visitor, a young girl named Emma Ponsonby,
whose father, a British diplomat to a small Central American country, has
been kidnapped by the Scarlet Jaguar. Pat, following in her father’s footsteps
of righting wrongs and assisting those in need, agrees to help, but before
they can set off on their quest the Scarlet Jaguar sends a gruesome warning.

Undeterred, the investigation takes Pat, Parker, and their young charge
from Pemberley House in the Derbyshire countryside . . . To New York, where
they battle agents of the Scarlet Jaguar and meet Pat’s old friend, the icy,
pale-skinned beauty Helen Benson, who agrees to join them on their quest
. . . To the small nation of Xibum, where the Scarlet Jaguar’s reign of uncanny
assassinations threatens to expand to the rest of Central America—and beyond!

Now, it’s a race against time deep in the wilds of the Central American
jungle, as Pat Wildman and her crew search for Emma’s father, and confront
the Scarlet Jaguar’s weird power to eliminate his enemies from afar, marked
only by a wisp of crimson smoke—smoke resembling nothing so much as the head
of a blood-red screaming jaguar. But who—or what—is the Scarlet Jaguar? A
power-mad dictator determined to reclaim power? A revolutionary movement
bent on taking over the country, and the rest of Central America?

Or a front for something even more sinister . . .?

 The Scarlet
Jaguar is the second in our series of signed limited edition novellas.Just like (the now sold out) Exiles of Kho, the print run will be

 | NICK CARTER MYSTERIES TRIPLE FEATURE (1939-40) - Now available!
Nick Carter began his stint as literary icon and criminal foe over
125 years ago on the pages of dime novels. As times and media change, he’s
donned a wide spectrum of hero hats: proto-superman, pulp detective, radio
gumshoe, paperback spy-sassin — “the American Sherlock Holmes”…Perhaps the
best incarnation of Nick Carter can be found in these three high-flying,
white knuckling, brawling adventure mysteries starring the great Walter Pidgeon.
Not yet confined by the probities of the leading support roles he would
be called on to play, Walter’s Carter is equal parts cranium and cool, mixing
the ratiocination with romance and fisticuffs. The looming war in Europe
casts a shadow of the films as well, with Nick tackling timely menaces such
as spies and saboteurs, alongside his diminutive amateur detective sidekick
Bartholomew, a true B-man who literally controls swarms of angry bees.

NICK CARTER, MASTER DETECTIVE (1939) sees Nick tackling espionage and sabotage
in the aviation industry with Rita Johnson providing earth-bound distractions.
PHANTOM RAIDERS (1939) sees Nick tackling the sinking of supply ships with
Fast Company star Florence Rice. SKY MURDER (1940) has Nick trying to clear
Karen Verne of a locked aircraft murder. Future Falcon, Tom Conway is also
aboard for the ride!

 | Sequential Pulp To Publish Edgar Rice Burroughs' JUNGLE TALES OF TARZAN Graphic Novel

Sequential Pulp Comics is proud to
announce a new graphic novel based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic
 novel, Jungle Tales of Tarzan.

The one hundred and forty four page graphic novel will be
authorized by ERB, Inc. through Sequential Pulp’s distribution arrangement
with Dark Horse Comics. The book will be designed as an anthology
collecting the twelve loosely connected short stories written by
Edgar Rice Burroughs chronicling the life of his most famous character,
Tarzan of the Apes. All the events of the original work take place
within chapter eleven of Tarzan of the Apes between Tarzan’s avenging
of his ape foster mother’s death and his becoming the leader of his
ape tribe. The original stories ran in Blue Book magazine from September
1916 through August 1917 prior to the book’s publication in 1919.

Writer Martin Powell will helm the graphic novel. Powell
is well known for his work as the author of hundreds of science fiction,
mystery, and horror stories. He has worked in the comic book industry
since 1986, writing for Marvel, DC, Malibu, Caliber, Moonstone,
and Disney, among others, and has been nominated for the coveted Eisner
Award. He is also a respected and award winning author of children’s
books, and frequently contributes prose for many short story anthologies.
He resides in Saint Paul, MN.

Along with Powell, Sequential Pulp is bringing a veritable
who’s who of exciting illustration talent. With an amazing cover
and specialty art by Daren Bader to exciting story art by Pablo
Marcos, Terry Beatty, Will Meugniot, Nik Poliwko, Antonio Romero Olmedo,
Mark Wheatley, Diana Leto, Steven E. Gordon, Lowell Isaac, Tom Floyd
and Jamie Chase. Each story has been matched up with an artist whose
passion and love for Burroughs’ Tarzan and specifically for the story
selected will go a long way towards making this one highly anticipated
   book in the Tarzan canon.

Each story will run twelve pages in length and the book
will be in full color. Sequential Pulp is planning a standard trade
paperback and a very limited signature deluxe signed edition.
