A mental marvel from birth, who used
his talents on stage as a boy, Philip Strange is now
known as "The Phantom Ace of G-2" by the
Allies during WWI. A boyhood prank comes
back to haunt the so-called Brain-Devil when he
meets his vaudeville nemesis in the Theater of
War. Karl von Zenden, the one-time "lightning-change"
Man of a Thousand Faces, is now using his stage
tricks as agent Z-13 for the Wilhelmstrasse—and he’s
not one to drop the curtain on a grudge. Now backstage rivals
are front-line enemies in an exclusive engagement
of “Spy vs. Spy.” And when Strange gets into the act
and uses his own makeup-mastery, the Great War becomes
the Greatest Show on Earth! Ladies and gentlemen, presenting
for your entertainment ... two strange operators head-to-head
in eight pulp classics from the pages of Flying Aces magazine!

after his favorite ranch pony back
home in Arizona. With his trusty smoke pole strapped
to his leg, there wasn’t a fight or a wager that

to take on—and that included the Baron von Stolz,

adventures of Smoke Wade by Robert J.
Hogan pits Smoke and the 66th Pursuit Squadron
against some of von Stolz’s most sinister

From the pages of Popular Publication’s Battle Birds and
Dare-Devil Aces, this book contains 11 more tales

riding range for several ranches on the west
slope of the Rockies. After that he tried amateur
boxing and playing piano for silent movies and

had built houses, manufactured leather goods, designed
   planes, and taught flying.

   | At the Earth's Core [Blu-ray] - Now available!
They're in it Deep now! Murderous monsters, scantily clad prehistoric
playmates and telepathic pterodactyls inhabit the center of our world
in this colorful fantasy-adventure about a manned "drill-craft" boring
its way to the center of the Earth! Starring sci-fi superstars Doug
McClure (The Land That Time Forgot), Peter Cushing (Nothing But the
Night) and Caroline Munro (Maniac), this subterranean chiller is the
most endearingly whimsical entertainment on - or under - the planet's
surface! There's more than lava at the Earth's core. There's also Pellucidar:
an underground empire where gargantuan pterodactyls torture and enslave
all humanoids - including the lovely Dia (Munro). But all that could
change when a surface-dwelling scientist (Cushing) and an American businessman
(McClure) drive their powerful "Iron Mole" straight into Pellucidar...
stirring up a great deal more than dirt, rocks and lava! Wonderfully
directed by sci-fi specialist, Kevin Connor (The People That Time Forgot).

This elaborate French utopia, written by Monsieur de Listonai
(pseudonym of Daniel Jost Villeneuve) and published in 1761, describes
the journey of an inhabitant of the Earth to the hidden face of the
Moon which is reached via a flying space galley, complete with pilot,
navigator and crew. There, he meets the Selenite Arzame who takes him
to the fortified city of Selenopolis, a perfect square built according
to symmetry and universal philosophical principles, whose citizens always
behave with intelligent discernment and view the universe in ways that
are radically different than those expressed by the people of Earth.
The Philosophical Voyager is the most spectacular early attempt to
put narrative flesh on the idea of progress as it was understood in the
Enlightenment Era, and it remained the boldest and most wide-reaching
work of its kind for at least half a century.

        Balzac's
 Caneby Delphine de Girardin
 adapted by Brian Stableford
Delphine de Girardin (1804-1855) was the daughter of famous
writer and playwright Sophie Gay (1776-1852). She began writing at an
early age, publishing two books of poems in 1824 and 1824, and a popular
collection of children's stories in 1833. She later married writer-journalist
Emile de Girardin (1802-1881) and became an important figure in the Romantic
 Movement.

This book collects two of her best Romantic fantasies: The Lorgnon
(1831), about a pair of glasses that enables their wearer to read thoughts,
and Balzac's Cane (1836), in which the famous author allows a young
man down on is luck to borrow the eponymous object, which confers
upon its owner the gift of invisibility.

These two stories remain highly readable today, all the more so if
one can discover them with an awareness of their ground-breaking qualities.

For centuries, the Great Federation of Sirius has been
at war with the Vegian Confederacy. However, the millions of soldiers
dying on the stellar battlefields are not men, but armies of clones
genetically engineered to be starship troopers. One day, one of them,
Coordinator Jivane Perich, becomes aware of this monstrous injustice
and, on the eve of the most formidable battle of this forever war, decides
  to lead a Clone Rebellion...

P.J. Hérault is a grandmaster of French science fiction who
has been favorably compared by genre scholars and critics to such
figures as Robert Heinlein, David Weber and Peter F. Hamilton. In 2009,
he was awarded the prestigious Cyrano life achievement award.

If there is a common thread in Hérault's works, it is the futility
of armed conflict and their author's deep aversion to violence. Ironically,
while many of his heroes are former military, they never hesitate to
take the measures necessary to survive and achieve peace and justice,
as is the case with The Clone Rebellion, published in 2005.

   The Empire in the Air

   A super-science epic . . . ahead of its time."—Sam Moskowitz

Strange flying globes-unfathomable aliens from the Fourth Dimension-
appear suddenly over major cities, raining destruction
and death on defenseless millions!
When all hope seems lost, a small team of scientists and airmen—and
a daredevil flyer captured by the invaders—rally the planet's
primitive air forces for a last, desperate battle to preserve
 mankind and its civilization.

   The Nebula of Death
Earth's impending passage through a strange cosmic nebula will
destroy the ability of all plant life to grow and reproduce,
dooming mankind to an agonizing starvation.
Standing between life and death for the entire planet are
scientist Edwin Allison, stenographer Jeanne Ward, and the
brilliant but dangerously eccentric Alexis Vroon, who will be
humanity's savior—or its willing executioner!
Normally retailing for $50, this two-pack is specially priced
    at $30.

   | Blood 'N' Thunder
/ Murania Press The Blood 'N'
  Thunder Sampler
 Now available!

The majority of people who visit
this site are already familiar with Blood ‘n’ Thunder, the flagship publication
of Murania Press. A good many are subscribers; some have been
supporting the magazine since it was launched in 2002. But
my little corner of cyberspace also receives a fair number
of visitors who, while having a genuine interest in the subjects
BnT covers, have never seen an issue. These include, for example,
fans of vintage movies, who have purchased such Murania Press books
as Cliffhanger Classics, Western Movie Roundup, and Distressed Damsels
and Masked Marauders. Occasionally, when selling my wares at shows
that cater to film buffs, those folks will casually flip through an
issue and say, “Well, this looks interesting. I’ll have to try one some
time.”
It’s primarily for such people that I’ve just put together The Blood
‘n’ Thunder Sampler, which reprints material from issues 24 through
29 as it originally appeared in the magazine’s pages. I could
have produced a third volume of The Best of Blood ‘n’ Thunder, but
the first two don’t accurately represent BnT in that they are
smaller in size, with reset type and only a tiny sampling of the illustrations
that grace each number. Quite frankly, I’m trying to appeal to
potential subscribers and believe I’ll have better luck with a
compilation replicating the actual pages of popular articles from
the recent past.

I’ve deliberately chosen for the Sampler a number of articles whose
subjects are such readily familiar characters as Zorro, Tarzan,
The Shadow, Hopalong Cassidy, and The Green Hornet. Those pieces
   — some of BnT’s best, in my opinion — should prove attractive
to readers who might be less enthusiastic about, say, my 22,000-word
survey of The Popular Magazine, which is also reprinted in the Sampler.
And I’m betting some folks who purchase issues sporadically will
be delighted to buy for $19.95 (postage included) a jumbo-sized BnT
containing the best material from six back issues that cost $11.95
each.

If you’re among those who’ve thought about trying BnT for a long
time without ever “pulling the trigger,” take a chance on the
Sampler and see what you’ve been missing. I’m pretty sure you’ll
  be pleasantly surprised.

 Dum
Dum Banquet Speaker/Guest of Honor will be Bill Berloni
Our 2015 Dum Dum Banquet Speaker/Guest of Honor, will be Bill Berloni,
who recently trainied Bowdie, a Poodle Mix, to play the part of
Nana in the beloved musical “Peter Pan”, which aired, live, on NBC
on December 4th. Another of his trainees is in the new “Annie” movie,
which opened just before Christmas. Additionally, he has two dogs (one
is the understudy) in the current National Tour of “Annie” – as well
as critters in other theatrical productions, both domestically and abroad
(Toto in “The Wizard of Oz” in Paris, France).

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Bill Berloni, let me introduce
      him to you:

In the summer of 1976, Bill was a 19-year-old apprentice at the Goodspeed
Opera House when a producer offered him his big break: a chance
to act professionally and gain his Equity Card. In return, all Bill
had to do was find and train a dog to play Sandy in the original production
   of "Annie".

What Bill didn’t know was that this was a bigger challenge than
it seemed. Animal performances in movies or television can be stitched
together using different takes, different camera angles, even different
animals. To perform in a featured role, an animal actor would have
to be trained to ignore the distraction of the audience and respond
to the same cues the same way night-after-night, just like his human
counterparts. It had never been done before.

Bill found his dog at a local animal shelter – beginning his career-long
commitment to using rescued animals. Through a combination of
persistence, patience and trial-and-error, he developed his revolutionary
humane training techniques – learning how to teach actor and
animal alike to create a successful performance. Annie became a
huge hit and Sandy became “the longest running dog on Broadway,”
never missing a performance in more than seven years.

Since then, Bill and his handlers have provided animals of all
species and sizes, found in shelters, humane societies or rescue
leagues, for Broadway, off-Broadway, national tours, regional theatres,
special events, the New York City Ballet, motion pictures, television
and commercials. When their careers are over, the animals return to
Bill’s Connecticut farm.

Bill is widely recognized as an expert in animal behavior and for
his dedication to rescue work. In addition to his work as a trainer,
Bill is currently behavior consultant to the Humane Society of
New York. He has a BFA in theatre, and is a published author and
actor.

 What to do
in the Clinton areaFor folks who want to take side trips on their own: Since

there to check out Yale; the Yale Center for British Art (http://britishart.yale.edu/)
; the Yale Art Gallery (http://artgallery.yale.edu/)  and the Peabody Museum
 of Natural History (http://peabody.yale.edu/)
(with its Pulitzer Prize winning dinosaur mural by my dear, late, friend
Rudy Zallinger.) Or they may want to hop a commuter train to NYC for the
day.  Clinton is also near  Mystic Seaport (http://www.mysticseaport.org/

Essex Steam Train (http://www.essexsteamtrain.com/); Gillette Castle
State Park, formerly the home of actor William Gillette, who portrayed
Sherlock Holems on the stage; Connecticut’s Dinosaur State Park and the
Goodspeed Opera House (http://www.goodspeed.org) where “Annie” & “Man from
La Mancha” started before going to Broadway.  Additionally, for those
that like to gamble – there are two, nearby, tribal run casinos (Foxwoods
& the Mohegan Sun).   Three miles West is the nationally acclaimed
R.J.Julia Booksellers (http://www.rjjulia.com/).  And the fabulous Book
Barn @ Niantic is just a few miles to the East, off    I-95 (http://www.bookbarnniantic.com/).

Famous (and forgotten) Fiction is a
new site featuring familiar and obscure fiction along
with articles, pictures and essays.      In the Writings
section, we have fiction by H. C. Bailey
(the first Reggie Fortune story), Carl
Stephenson, Sinclair Lewis and a large
selection of Kipling, including the complete Mowgli
stories and "The Man Who Would Be King."
We've also added an article about Sleeman's
An Account of Wolves Nurturing Children in Their
Dens, that includes a complete reprinting of the
         work.
In Comics, there is an overview
of Superman #205 ("The Man Who Destroyed
Krypton!") and a look at a Steve Ditko
illustrated story that bears a strong resemblance
                  to a well-known story by Carl Stephenson.The
Pictures section starts with a group
of collectible (and some not so) items and is
  the first of 24 collections.

 The site is hoping for
subscribers to keep it going and future
plans call for more stories, more articles
and there are a number of novels
we also intend to add to the mix.
 New material will be appearing
on the last Friday of each month (which
means we'll have more new stuff at the end of February).
In a few month  s, we
will also be offering ebooks: on the site

 Welcome to one
of the largest and most ambitious projects ever attempted in the field of
science fiction.  In the pages of FUTURES PAST we will be covering,
in detail, the birth and development of modern science fiction over its first
50 years – from 1926 to 1975.  Designed in a yearbook format, each issue
of FUTURES PAST will cover all the works, people, organizations and events
in detailed chronological order.
Relive novels such as LAST AND FIRST MEN, GALACTIC
PATROL, and WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE all the
way to more recent classics such as 1984, DUNE,
and THE LEFT HAND OF DARKNESS.

Follow the early careers of legends such as
   Bradbury, Clarke, Heinlein, Sturgeon, Asimov,
Leinster and many others, year by year,
story by story and novel by novel.

Learn about and even listen to hundreds of “old
time radio” plays produced for shows such as
  DIMENSION X and BEYOND TOMORROW.

Attend the major conventions such as the
first Worldcon held in New York City in
1939.             Read all the details, the award winners
and the activities.  See photos and even video
taken at some of the later conventions.                  Hear
about it from the people who were there.

There will even be coverage of amateur clubs
and fanzines over the years, beginning
with THE COMET published in 1930 by the Science
    Correspondence Club in Chicago.

Yes, every book, every magazine, every film,
        convention, and so much more!
FUTURES PAST is dedicated to all those amazing
people who helped to shape our modern world
by giving us a sense of wonder, by showing us
possible futures and addressing social issues long
before they touched the mainstream, and by simply daring
to ask, “what if…”      Our goal at FUTURES PAST is
to keep alive the people, works and memories of
a great genre and introduce them to a whole new generation
   of readers, thinkers and dreamers.

                   When
completed, this series will be the most comprehensive
history of the field ever undertaken.

FUTURES PAST is available at the link below

    | Girasol has launched a new series
of deluxe hardcover editions which feature full
sets of top quality cover scans of various
pulp titles. These numbered Limited Edition
volumes of 300 copies each are designed to present
the cover art in all its glory. The interior pages are
8.5"x11", full color throughout, 130+ pages.

Each book in the series has a mix
of full page scans, size as to the
original pulps, as well as some 4 per page
and 6 per page. The exterior is made
from bonded leather, with a small color cover inset
on the front of an issue-of-interest from the interior.
There is a brief introduction about the cover
art and artists, as well as a title checklist
with issue number, date, and cover artist if known.

A combo volume of full sets of scans
of the 3 titles, all 210 issues in total.
This edition will be the same format as our
  first 2 volumes, 8.5" x 11" interior,
130+ pages full color throughout, bonded
leather exterior, limited to 300 numbered
copies. There is a brief introduction about
the artists and issue dates/numbers checklist...
as mentioned before with this series, these volumes
are NOT comprehensive books about the pulp titles
themselves, they are visual references for the cover
 art.

A mix of full page, size-as covers, and 4 per
page images. Top quality, hi-res images,
with the pulp edges showing on a black background.
Great stuff to look at! Dime Mystery touted
itself as the Weirdest Stories Ever Told, and
certainly the cover art was true to the claim!

 Please note
that this is not a comprehensive book about the pulp
itself, but rather, a visual reference of
 the covers.

   | The Golden Age - Volume
2This new hardcover book showcases some of
 the finest artworks
from the Golden Age of Illustration, circa 1880-1950.
 Available for pre-order until February
     21!

This spectacular new book picks up where our previous volume
"The Golden Age" left off. Following the same format as before,
this new book features even more incredible artworks from the Golden
Age of illustration, circa 1880 to 1950. This time out we feature
211 artists with 218 full page reproductions of original paintings,
all photographed directly from the original art. Not a text book or
a history book, this new volume is a stunning PICTURE book, filled to
the brim with eye-popping visuals.

As the publisher of Illustration magazine, over the years I have
been able to assemble an extensive archive of scans of original
paintings from every corner of illustration history. Having produced
47 issues of the magazine so far, I now recognize that some of the
material in my files and on my hard drives may never find their way
into the magazine at all. An artist's history may be too scattered,
or the quantity of original works and tear sheets are too rare, to support
the "deluxe treatment" we usually give to our subjects (20 or 30 page
articles are the norm for the magazine.) Rather than allow these stunning
artworks to languish in the files, I've decided to pull together the
"best of the best" of these photographs into two fantastic books. The
first book was funded on Kickstarter in November and will be shipping in
March. With your help, this new volume will be produced for shipment in
July.

As with previous "Kickstarter" titles released
by The Illustrated Press, this book will not be offered through
Amazon, so it will never be offered at a discounted price (unless you
can find a "used" copy.) If you want this book new, you will have
to buy it directly from The Illustrated Press. In other words, don't
worry about funding the book for $40 and then turning around and seeing
it listed on Amazon later for $26. That is not going to happen.

   | Haffner PressThe Complete Ivy Frost
 by Donald Wandrei
   Cover Art by Raymond Swanland
    Now available for
  pre-order!
It may come as a surprise to some that Donald Wandrei
wrote more mysteries than all his horror, fantasy, and science
fiction tales combined. This volume collects all eighteen
adventures of Wandrei’s ratiocinative detective I.V. Frost, who
is ably assisted by his beautiful and tough female assistant,
Jean Moray. A scientist and inventor, Frost has his own approach
to solving mysteries. Rather than following the usual hard-drinking,
trench-coated style of many of his contemporaries, Frost’s strategy
was to mix the logic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes
with the technology of Lester Dent’s Doc Savage. In 2000, D.H. Olson
edited a volume published by Fedogan and Bremer collecting the first
eight of Frost’s adventures. A second volume of the remaining 10 tales
was promised but never materialized.

THIEVES FALL OUT by Gore Vidal, Cover art by Glen Orbik
In 1953, Gore Vidal had already begun
writing the works that would launch him to
the top ranks of American authors and intellectuals.
But in the wake of criticism for the scandalous
content of his third novel, Vidal turned
to writing crime fiction under fake names: three books
as "Edgar Box" and one as "Cameron Kay." The Edgar
Box novels were subsequently republished under his real name.
     The Cameron Kay never was.

Lost for more than 60 years and overflowing with
political and sexual intrigue, THIEVES FALL OUT
provides a delicious glimpse into the mind of
Gore Vidal in his formative years. By turns mischievous
and deadly serious, Vidal tells the story of
a man caught up in events bigger than he is, a down-on-his-luck
American hired to smuggle an ancient relic out of Cairo
at a time when revolution is brewing and heads are about
  to roll.

One part Casablanca and one part torn-from-the-headlines
tabloid reportage, this novel also offers a startling
glimpse of Egypt in turmoil—written over half
a century ago, but as current as the news streaming
  from that region today.

First publication in 60 years, and first ever under
         the author’s real name!
The author of LINCOLN, BURR, MYRA BRECKINRIDGE and
other classics, Gore Vidal is one of the most
acclaimed American authors of the past century

    6x9-inch perfect
bound; 264 pages, $20.00Before he was a comic-book pioneer, Major
           Malcolm-Wheeler Nicholson wrote adventure tales
for the great pulp magazines—and no
run-of-the-mill pulp fiction was it. The Major
served as a cavalry officer on the southwest
border during the Mexican Revolution. While the
First World War raged in Europe, he fought the
Moro insurgency in the southern Philippines. Then followed
       his strangest assignment, conducting espionage
in legendarily hostile Siberia. After the war he was
stationed in Western Europe. These places
became the settings for the majority of his hardboiled
adventure stories. His use of authentic detail,
combined with his superior storytelling ability,
make his stories difficult to put down. You read
one of the Major’s entrancing tales—and your imagination
is transported back to those real places of danger and
  daring!

This inaugural collection of the Major’s
fiction includes stories set in all four
of his real-life arenas, originally published
       in top adventure pulps: Adventure,
Argosy, The Popular Magazine. It is time
for the Major to receive his due—as one
of the genuine larger-than-life men of the pulps.
Included is an in-depth introduction by Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson,
        the Major’s granddaughter.

 “Yes, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson
is one of the very, very few people responsible for
the birth of the comic book industry
as the visionary founder of what we today
call DC Comics. And, yes, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson
is one of the very, very few people responsible for giving
   the world Superman.”

 Michael Uslan,
Executive Producer of all the Batman movies,
Comic book historian, and author of his
memoir, The Boy Who Loved Batman.

 “Not many adventure writers
can claim to have based their stories on their own exploits.
                   Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson could—and
because of it, his evocations of heroism and
combat have a believability and a personal
depth unlike anything else in pulp fiction.”

 Gerard Jones,
Author of Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters
and the Birth of the Comic Book.

The Pulp Adventurecon has been taking place annually
in Bordentown, New Jersey for a long, long time -- but
now we're branching out and attempting to conquer the south!
The first annual Pulp Adventurecon South is Saturday, February
21st, 2015 at the Universal Palms Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
This mildly magnificent event is in addition to the Bordentown,
NJ show occurring November 7th, 2015.

Who will be attending? Only the biggest and brightest names
in pulp fiction! Edgar Rice Burroughs, Dashiell Hammett,
Ray Bradbury, Johnston McCulley, H.P. Lovecraft! Who else?
Walter Gibson (alias Maxwell Grant) and The Shadow, Lester
Dent and company (i.e. Kenneth Robeson) and Doc Savage!
Captain Future? Of course. The Black Mask Boys? Check.

They'll all be here because -- like its sister/brother event
in the great northeast -- the exhibit room will be JAM-PACKED
with pulp magazines, vintage paperbacks, vintage movie
memorabilia, classic radio comedy and drama, and tons of
related paper material. Pulp Adventurecon becomes the alpha and
omega of annual events, two warmly nostalgic bookends to your
pulp-collecting calendar. We'll add more information to the website
    as the date approaches.

Admission will be $5 at the door, and tables are $55 each.
Scroll down past the show flyer graphic for more information
    about hotel and transportation.

 Escape the
cold weather by attending the Pulp AdventureCon in Fort Lauderdale.
In two weeks, we crack a bottle of champagne on the maiden
voyage of Pulp Adventurecon in Florida!

If you're in Broward County on vacation, make plans to swing by the
Universal Palms Hotel -- or tell a Florida-based pulp-collecting pal.

Such longtime pulp stalwarts as David Alexander, Heartwood Auctions,
Jeffrey Shanks, Scott Hartshorn, and Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson will set
up shop in the vendor room.

CJ's Comics & Collectibles, located in Fort Lauderdale, will also
set up with a selection of Golden Age comics, magazines, and pulpy-items.

Our friend and guest J. David Spurlock will be on-hand, with a wide
selection of titles from Vanguard Productions -- including The Alluring
Art of Margaret Brundage, which is garnering rave reviews from pulp
 fans and art historians alike.

 The Pulp Magazines
Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the
study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential
literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The
Project also provides information on the history of this important
but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists,
and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's
mission is the archive itself. In
summer 2011, it began with a modest
  library of five representative first-generation
pulp titles from the early twentieth century.
Over time, the archive will expand, new magazines
will be digitized, and contextual materials
added. Eventually, the archive will feature
          a broad range of pre-1923 titles, post-1923
titles where copyright has lapsed, and full volume
runs of select titles from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering
          ties between communities of collectors,
fans, and academics devoted to pulp magazines,
and will offer opportunities for research
and collaboration to both scholars and
enthusiasts alike. We will provide information
      on upcoming conferences and
conventions, and promote new working relationships
between academics and the hundreds of
pulp fans and collectors beyond the college and
university.
