The Jailbird FlightBy Donald E. Keyhoe
Below the Rio Grande he had once been
known as “The Killer.” Now Captain Bruce Kirby flew through hell
skies, leader of the strangest squadron that ever dared
face death from flaming Spandaus. Outcasts—all of them—branded
with the convict’s arrow! No cowards came to the
Jailbird drome—only those dishonored war eagles who
chose a chance to die in action rather than rot behind
prison bars. Hot tempers, liquor, and the madness of war
had brought them low—but beneath it all they still were men!
A former U.S. Marine pilot, author Donald E. Keyhoe was
a prolific contributor to the pulp magazines, but he is
perhaps best remembered for his UFO research in the Fifties
and Sixties. In August of 1931, Keyhoe started three
long-lived series in three different aviation magazines: Captain
Philip Strange in Flying Aces; The Devil Dog Squadron in Sky
Birds; and The Jailbird Flight in Battle Aces. This volume features
the first seven Jailbird adventures published by Popular Publications
in 1931 and ‘32: The Jailbird Flight, The Drome of Vanishing
Men, The Masked Skull Squadron, The Jailbird Ace, Dead Man’s Drome,
Claws of the Jailbird, and The Skeleton Ace.

            America’s enemies have assembled squadrons
of flying furies, exploding skeletons, and invisible airplanes
to turn the tide of the First World War. But
when things get weird, we get Strange. Captain Philip
        Strange, that is—ace pilot and so-called “Brain-Devil”
of G-2 Intelligence. His assignment? Journey from
the back-alleys of Paris to the skies over Germany,
taking down flying fortresses, cursed aerodromes, strafing
skulls, and other wild weapons of mass destruction!
This fourth volume of Philip Strange missions includes seven
thrilling tales: Satan's Staffel, The Vanishing Staffel,
Hoodoo Drome, The Skull Staffel, The Skeleton Barrage,
Staffel of the Starved, and The Staffel Invisible.

 SHERLOCK HOLMES: THE BARON'S REVENGE
 DOCTOR WATSON: SEASON OF MADNESS
  Now available!

 TWO CLASSIC MYSTERIES
BACK IN PRINT
Several years ago writer Gary Lovisi submitted his novel, “SHERLOCK
HOLMES –  The Baron’s Revenge,” to us.    We loved it.
We published it via Create Space and began selling it at Amazon
in hard copy.     Shortly thereafter, Gary was approached by some
bully lawyer claiming he was infringing on a licensed property and
was attempting to coerce him via this blackmailing ploy.  When
Gary notified us of this contact, we assured him Holmes was public domain
and he should ignore this jerk.    Sadly, this was a year or so before
the U.S. Federal Court made our claim known throughout the land.

In deference to Gary’s wishes, he pulled the book from Amazon’s
public pages….but continued to sell it at the Create Space site.
Ultimately, we went and released it on Kindle.     Then after
the court’s public ruling, we notified Amazon to put the book back
up publicly where everyone could find it again.  It’s a great
book and deserves to be read by Holmes fans everywhere.   Somehow
our request was never implanted and only recently, while preparing
to have all our Holmes titles done as audio books, we discovered Amazon
had dropped the ball and never gotten “The Baron’s Revenge” back up
on an official Amazon page.

This past week, we contacted them again, explained the situation
and they, Amazon, told us they would remedy the issue.    But
for whatever reasons, Amazon has chosen NOT to comply with our
wishes and the title on the Amazon pages only appears for Kindle.
To that end we are posting its page at Create Space where you can
now buy a hard copy.    If we have our way it will remain there
indefinitely. Gary Lovisi’s “SHERLOCK HOLMES – The Baron’s Revenge”
is once again available in hard copy at the link below.

At the same we posted a new Airship 27 Production edition of our
first Dr. Watson solo adventure, SEASON OF MADNESS by Aaron Smith,
which had been out of print for a while.  We’re delighted
to have this new edition available once again. It too will soon be
an audio book from Radio Archives.

THEM THAT LIVES BY THEIR GUNSTHE COLLECTED HARD-BOILED STORIES OF RACE WILLIAMS VOLUME 1
by Carroll John Daly (Author), Brooks Hefner (Author),
Matthew Moring (Editor), Mark Krajnak (Illustrator)
 Now available!
 Collected for
the first time: the stories of hard-boiled detective Race Williams.
Originally appearing in the pages of Black Mask Magazine,
author Carroll John Daly pioneered the hard-boiled P.I.
story and perfected the genre with his classic character Race
Williams. Apart from the novel-length Race Williams stories,
these classic hard-boiled thrillers have rarely been reprinted,
    if ever.
Volume 1 contains the first 17 Race
Williams stories, all from 1923-26 issues of Black Mask:
''Knights of the Open Palm,'' ''Personal But Not Confidential,''
''$3,000 to the Good,'' ''The Red Peril,'' ''Them That Lives
By Their Guns,'' ''Devil Cat,'' ''The Face Behind the Mask,''
''Conceited, Maybe,'' ''Say It With Lead!,'' ''I ll Tell the World,''
''Alias Buttercup,'' ''Under Cover,'' ''South Sea Steel,'' ''The
False Clara Burkhart,'' ''The Super-Devil,'' ''Half-Breed,'' and
''Blind Alleys.''

 Three additional, early, first-person
hard-boiled stories by Daly which laid the groundwork
for the Race Williams are included as well: ''Dolly,'' ''Paying
an Old Debt,'' and ''The False Burton Combs,'' as well as
editorial pieces by Daly himself on his inspirations, writing
style, and advice to prospective writers. And it's prefaced by
an all-new, scholarly introduction by Professor Brooks Hefner
   of James Madison University.

 | THE BIG SHUTDOWN 2 - Now available! By John M. Whalen

Flying W Press announces the return of a space western
   classic. ‘’THE BIG SHUTDOWN.”

First published as a series in the famed Ray Gun Revival e-zine
in 2006-2007, and in 2010 as a paperback and e-book novel under
the title “Jack Brand,” this space western saga is back in a revised
edition, under a new title – “THE BIG SHUTDOWN.”

An entire planet is about to be shutdown. Once exploited by Earth’s
conglomerates for its rich oil resources, the planet Tulon has
become obsolete due to the rise of alternative fuel technologies.
The powers that be are ready to pull the plug. Chaos rules as Nomad
gangs terrorize what’s left of Tulon’s cities. Jack Brand, ex-Army
Ranger, semi-retired Tulon Security Officer, searches for his missing
sister, Terry. His journey takes him from desert wasteland, to a domed
city, through savage jungles, and down into a kingdom below the sea.
Along the way he meets the unforgettable Christy Jones, but love will
have to wait until Brand finds his sister, and soon the last ship will
leave for Earth.

The new edition includes an introduction by Ray Gun Revival Overlord,
Johne Cook, and a bonus story from Whalen’s This Ray Gun for
Hire series.

Don’t miss this exciting space western adventure, which some have
said combines the Space Opera thrills of Flash Gordon and the gritty
feeling of a Sam Peckinpah western.

Available now on Amazon.com in paperback or Kindle.

            "Now, the crumbling, cracked rampart
is collapsing. The sea is invading the volcanic caverns. The ancient
struggle between water and fire has resumed." A flamboyant adventure featuring swords and sorcery, heroic
barbarians and evil priests avid for human sacrifices , monstrous
Guardians at the Threshold and the Fountain of Youth, The Last Days
of Atlantis (1905) is a direct ancestor of such spectacularly successful
modern fantasy works as The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones.
It helps fill in a notable gap between the stylized heroic fantasies of
William Morris, James Branch Cabell, Lord Dunsany and E.R. Eddison,
and the sword and sorcery tropes of Robert E. Howard, further developed
by C. L. Moore, Fritz Leiber, Clark Ashton Smith, Jack Vance and George
R.R. Martin.

After acquiring a magic sword, Argall, a brave barbarian hero, becomes
both pawn and prize in a fierce conflict between Yerra, the wicked
Sorceress-Queen of Atlantis, and Soroe, the courageous maiden
who has dared to challenge her. Their battle shall lead to the inevitable
  doom of the fabled island.

 Charles Lomon (1852-1923) and Pierre-Barthélemy Gheusi (1865-1943)
were both successful novelists, playwrights and operatic librettists.
Although The Last Days of Atlantis did not attract much attention
at the time of its publication, it can be seen, with the aid of hindsight,

The enigmatic immortal Axel Rathenius has been commissioned
to paint a triptych illustrating the life of Orpheus. Meanwhile,
an enigmatic legacy propels him, his agent Myrica Mavor, Madame
Vashti Savage the medium, and the mournful poet Hecate Rain in the
midst of a conflict between the rival cults of Orpheus and Dionysus.
Brian Stableford's latest novel, Eurydice's Lament, returns to
the artists' colony of Mnemosyne, an island off the northern coast

As a child, Charles Nodier had witnessed the guillotine in bloody
action in Revolutionary France. Decades before Freud, the knowledge
that nightmares could come to life made him sensitive to the irrational
as an important part of experience. Rebelling against the devotion
to Classical Reason hailed in 18th century France as the best way
to think about any topic, Nodier championed Romanticism and Fantasy
as a way to look at experiences demanding more intuitive understanding,
such as beauty, terror, or love.

The hell-demon Smarra (1821) was only a nightmare, the menace of a
single night for the dreamer Lorenzo. But for Lucius, the ancient
Greek wanderer lost inside the dream, Smarra brought literal
death and a rebirth into terror.

Jeannie thought the brownie Trilby (1822) was a gentle trickster,
a help in the household chores. The pious monk Ronald thought a
brownie was a demon, opening the way to damnation. Love might
give Jeannie the courage to stand by her puckish admirer.

Only Michael the Carpenter was foolish enough to believe that The
Crumb Fairy (1832), the little old beggarwoman fed from the crumbs
of the children's lunches was really the beautiful Queen of Sheba.
But was his folly really madness - or wisdom?

This wildly melodramatic thriller, originally published
in the August 1933 issue of Dime Mystery Magazine, provided
the template for countless pulp-hero novels published during
the Thirties. Depression-era readers craved outlandish menaces
to take their minds off their troubles, and The Purple Eye
was at the top of the list.

The Eye, maniacal criminal mastermind and leader of the ancient
death cult known as the Brotherhood of Baktuun, terrorizes
New York City with a series of high-profile murders accomplished
by mysterious means. Seven million souls are at his mercy as
his outrages mount in dizzying succession. The police, constrained
by legal niceties and endless red tape, seem powerless to
thwart his mad schemes. Enter Wayne Saxon, millionaire sportsman and
world traveler, who devotes his life to running the Eye to earth.
He works within the law when possible, but without it when necessary.
Will he succeed? There’s a thrill on every page of this baffling
mystery.

Shawn Danowski’s introduction, “The Pulp That Murder Built,”
provides a history of Dime Mystery in its early, pre-weird
menace phase.

“Friends of mine have told me that there is little of
adventure left in the great cities. Which proves that they never
rode the fire department. I have.” — Karl Detzer

Karl Detzer blows the lid off pulp fiction in a thrill-packed collection
of firefighter stories! These fearless adventurers plunge headlong
into the fury of industrial accidents, tenement fires, and arson
scams! When no one else can stand the heat, they’re on the way to
serve and protect!

Thirteen thrill-packed stories, largely centered around the Chicago
Fire Department, culled from the pages of Adventure, Complete
Stories and Short Stories magazine — three of the top pulp magazines
  of all time!

Within the pages of Europa’s Child: The Spirit Returns,
James BraveWolf is writing at the height of his creative power.
He exposes “The Leviathan” – the corrupt, power-mad “taste-makers”
who seek to mold human beings and society into their image, to serve
them – but he also celebrates individuality and the power to resist
and ultimately defeat the evil influence. He celebrates the essence
of humanity. Read his words, then go forth, reawakened with a sense
of purpose.

James BraveWolf: "We were an experiment. And now our usefulness
is over. We are alone in the laboratory. But before the lights are
turned off and we fall into dust and mold, they are using the very
last energy we have to fight their wars, and guide their stealth and
drones to make all the world become like us. An Experiment.

 "But I believe they will lose because they cannot    build    anything;
they who make such skyscrapers and Nano-technological wonders,
have missed out on the fundamental building block of all life.
There is no heart inside their creations. No Soul. No love. No Sun.

"In the nature of Germany and Austria something sacred reached out
to me. It was then that I knew that Landscape could talk. It talked
to me—Perhaps out of sorrow, perhaps out of love, it gave me a
promise that one day I would return home."

 | CARNACKI: THE GHOST-FINDER - Coming in February 2016!
Coming in February 2016, a brand new series of horror
  readings performed by Dan Starkey...

Creeping out after our announcement of Dracula, Big Finish is pleased
to be able to confirm details of a brand new range of audiobook
readings for 2016. Carnacki: The Ghost-Finder brings to life the cases
of the supernatural detective, created by writer William Hope Hodgson
   in 1910.

‘The Carnacki stories are fantastic,’ says producer Scott Handcock,
‘and Hodgson’s writing is so wonderfully rich and evocative, it
made sense for us to bring them to life in a series of equally fantastic
readings. The first six tales especially are incredibly atmospheric
  - a cross between Conan Doyle and MR James - as Carnacki finds himself
investigating supernatural happenings in the early twentieth century.’

The classic tales will be performed by Dan Starkey (Doctor Who’s
Strax the Sontaran) as Thomas Carnacki with support from Joseph Kloska
as his associate Dodgson. The range is directed and produced by
Scott Handcock, whose previous work for Big Finish includes The Confessions
of Dorian Gray and Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus.

‘Strangely, I was working with Dan in Cardiff when I happened to
mention I’d be tackling the Carnacki stories,’ continues Scott,
‘and he immediately started gushing about the character and the
stories, so it was a delight when he agreed to bring Carnacki
to life on audio. The language and writing is so rich, it’s great
to let Dan’s performance take centre-stage, coupled with a lovely
score from Ioan Morris and Rhys Downing.’

Carnacki: The Ghost-Finder collects together six of William Hope
  Hodgson’s original stories:

 The Gateway of the Monster
 The House Among the Laurels
 The Whistling Room
 The Horse of the Invisible
The Searcher of the End House
 The Thing Invisible

All six stories will be included as part of a single volume which
can be pre-ordered today for £18 on download ahead of its
 release in February 2016.

Please note that this release is download-only.

 | Clive Cussler: THE PHAROH'S SECRET
(The NUMA Files) - Coming November
17! by Clive Cussler & Graham Brown

Kurt and Joe tangle with the most determined enemy they’ve
ever encountered when a ruthless powerbroker schemes
to build a new Egyptian empire as glorious as those of
the Pharaohs. Part of his plan rests on the manipulation
of a newly discovered aquifer beneath the Sahara, but an
even more devastating weapon at his disposal may threaten the
entire world: a plant extract known as the black mist,
discovered in the City of the Dead and rumored to have the power
to take life from the living and restore it to the dead.

With the balance of power in Africa and Europe on the
verge of tipping, Kurt, Joe, and the rest of the NUMA
team will have to fight to discover the truth behind the legends—but
to do that, they have to confront in person the greatest legend
of them all: Osiris, the ruler of the Egyptian underworld.

 | CRIMSON SHORE (Agent Pendergast series)
                     -   Arriving in book
stores November 10! by Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child

 A secret chamber.
 A mysterious shipwreck.
A murder in the desolate salt marshes.

A seemingly straightforward private case turns out to be much more
  complicated-and sinister-than Special Agent A.X.L. Pendergast ever
 could have anticipated.

Pendergast, together with his ward Constance Greene, travels to
the quaint seaside village of Exmouth, Massachusetts, to investigate
the theft of a priceless wine collection. But inside the wine cellar,
they find something considerably more disturbing: a bricked-up niche
that once held a crumbling skeleton.

Pendergast and Constance soon learn that Exmouth is a town with a
very dark and troubled history, and this skeleton may be only the
first hint of an ancient transgression, kept secret all these years.
But they will discover that the sins of the past are still very much
alive. Local legend holds that during the 1692 witch trials in Salem,
the real witches escaped, fleeing north to Exmouth and settling deep
in the surrounding salt marshes, where they continued to practice their
wicked arts.
Then, a murdered corpse turns up in the marshes. The only clue is
a series of mysterious carvings. Could these demonic symbols bear
some relation to the ancient witches' colony, long believed to be
abandoned?

A terrible evil lurks beneath the surface of this sleepy seaside
town-one with deep roots in Exmouth's grim history. And it may
be that Constance, with her own troubled past, is the only one who
truly comprehends the awful danger that she, Pendergast, and the residents
of Exmouth must face . . .

 Series: Agent Pendergast series

Written in 1941 but not published until 1967 - and just the second
historical novel written by Edgar Rice Burroughs - this is a
stark tale of madness as told by a slave of the decidedly insane
(consensus opinion) Roman emperor Caligula. It promises to be
a very different online adventure strip.

The ocean is gone and Earth is a nightmare of sandstorms,
death, and dust. The streets of Paris are home to terrifying
creatures that hunt the few humans who survived the devastation.
Now, a twelve-year old girl and a broken hero from her father's
bedtime stories are on a desperate voyage to redeem the terrible
failure of The Astonishing Aquanauts and bring back the ocean.

 Paperback: 324 pages
 Publisher: Cave Branch Press
 Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.8 x 8.5 inches
 Paperback: $14.99

The story is inspired in large part by the author's love of Doc
Savage, Jules Verne, Lovecraft, and the early Stan/Jack Marvel
  comics.
The story reflects the pace and sense of fun that lovers of pulp
  will enjoy.

     Fiction!

 October 2015
Just in time for Halloween, we are pleased to present
"In Amundsen's Tent" by John Martin Leahy, a classic
horror story from the pages of Weird Tales.  We've also discovered
some interesting connections between this story and Leahy's
other work, which you will find documented in an Afterword to the
story.

Also, in a continuation of our reprinting of the Harvard work of
George Allan England we present "Sciurus Carolinensis, Esq." and article about the squirrels
that, in England's day, inhabited the Harvard Yard and environs.

 September 2015
Another story from the Harvard years of George Allan England,
"The Divided Letter," a romance that originally appeared
in the October, 1902 issue of The Harvard Illustrated Magazine.
Also, The first Sherlock Holmes short story (and the only appearance
of Irene Adler) from the July, 1891 issue of The Strand, "A Scandal in Bohemia," including all the Sidney Paget
illustrations and an introduction by Dan Neyer.

 August 2015
A romantic adventure set in Morocco by A. J.
Dawson, The Powder Play, as it appeared in the January, 1898
issue of Pearson’s Magazine (UK).
Our presentation also includes the Warwick Goble illustrations,
an introduction by Bob Gay and, as a part of the
intro, a reprinting of an article that appeared in the
January, 1901 issue of The Bookman  that includes
additional biographical information about Dawson not
 found in the usual sources.

 And...

Continuing our reprinting of the Harvard work of George
Allan England, we present “Two-Fifty An Hour - A Tragedy in One Act”  that
originally appeared in the February, 1902 issue of The Harvard
      Illustrated Magazine.

 In Writings
Expanding our selection of stories by Baroness
Orczy, this month we introduce The Baroness Orczy Collection, which includes a biography
of the Baroness and links to her stories all in one place.
And, to kick off our new addition, we have reprinted
the Baroness's third published story, The Traitor --a story which seems to have never been
reprinted and has nothing to do with the Scarlet Pimpernel.
Lastly, in our continuing reprinting of George Allan
England, we have put together another selection
from his Harvard years, Illustrations: 3 Short Works that were originally written
while he was a student and, like with the Orczy story, have
never been reprinted.

The first, and chronologically the last, Mowgli
story, "In the Rukh" by Rudyard Kipling as it appeared in the
June, 1896 issue of McClure's Magazine with illustrations by W. A.
      C. Page and dual introductions by Bob Gay and Dan

speed in an article from the  April, 1897
      issue of Pearson's Magazine (UK).
The Downfall of Reginald Pym by George Allan England
- Another story written while he was a student at Harvard that

The Harvard Illustrated Magazine.

 In Writings
We've added a new section to our Writings
section: The Arthur Conan Doyle Collection.
Here, you will find all our reprintings of Doyle's
works (with more to come), along with an
  added tidbit or two.

But, as they say in infomercials, there's more!
We've also added a suspense story by Doyle
"The Brazilian Cat", a pastiche of Sherlock Holmes,
"The Adventure of the Two Collaborators" that includes
an introduction describing the background of the how the story
came about, and an article/interview from the
August, 1892 issue of THE STRAND MAGAZINE,
"A Day with Dr. Conan Doyle": a bit of insight into
Doyle's life including all the original photographs that appeared with the
article.

Famous (and forgotten) Fiction is a
new site featuring familiar and obscure fiction along
with articles, pictures and essays.      In the Writings
section, we have fiction by H. C. Bailey (the first
             Reggie Fortune story), Carl Stephenson,
Sinclair Lewis and a large selection of Kipling,
including the complete Mowgli stories and
"The Man Who Would Be King."  We've also
added an article about Sleeman's An Account
of Wolves Nurturing Children in Their

In Comics, there is an overview of Superman
#205 ("The Man Who Destroyed Krypton!") and a
look at a Steve Ditko illustrated story that
bears a strong resemblance to a well-known story by Carl
Stephenson. The Pictures section starts with a group
of collectible (and some not so) items and
is the first of 24 collections.

The site is hoping for subscribers
to keep it going and future plans call for more stories,
more articles and there are a number of
novels  we also intend to add to the mix.
New material will be appearing on
the last Friday of each month (which
means we'll have more new stuff at the
 end of February).
In a few month  s, we will also
be offering ebooks: on the site (in PDF) and

 | Before his marriage to (and subsequent collaborations
with) Catherine L. Moore, Henry Kuttner was
a frequent contributor to the pulp magazines
that specialized in the weird, supernatural, horror,
and science fiction genre. Beginning in 1936, with
the minor classic “The Graveyard Rats,” Kuttner launched
a steady stream of short stories aimed at Weird
Tales, Strange Stories, Thrilling Mystery, and others.
Writing for Weird Tales brought Kuttner into direct
correspondence with that magazine’s premier contributor.
                     H. P. Lovecraft. Kuttner set several
stories in Lovecraft’s “Cthulhu Mythos” and two
are presented in THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR: “Hydra” and
   “The Hunt.”

At this point in his still-young career, Kuttner
had cracked the science fiction market and was
       steadily publishing in Thrilling Wonder
Stories, Fantastic Adventures, Science Fiction, and
made his first sale to the new prestigious fantasy
 magazine, UNKNOWN.

In the course of writing the stories collected in
this volume, Kuttner married Catherine Lucille
Moore on June 7, 1940 (in New York with
artist Virgil Finlay as Best Man).
THE WATCHER AT THE DOOR is the second volume in a
three-volume “Early Kuttner” set collecting many of
Kuttner’s earliest stories, most of which have
  never been reprinted.

 | Haffner PressThe Complete Ivy Frost
 by Donald Wandrei
 Cover Art by Raymond Swanland
 Now available for pre-order!
It may come as a surprise to some that
Donald Wandrei wrote more mysteries than
all his horror, fantasy, and science
fiction tales combined. This volume collects
all eighteen adventures of Wandrei’s ratiocinative
detective I.V. Frost, who is ably assisted
by his beautiful and tough female assistant, Jean
Moray. A scientist and inventor, Frost has his
own approach to solving mysteries. Rather than following
the usual hard-drinking, trench-coated style of many
of his contemporaries, Frost’s strategy was to mix the
logic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes
with the technology of Lester Dent’s Doc Savage. In
2000, D.H. Olson edited a volume published by Fedogan
and Bremer collecting the first eight of Frost’s
adventures. A second volume of the remaining 10 tales
  was promised but never materialized.

 CUT ME IN
 Ed McBain
 Cover art by Robert McGinnis

WHEN A MAN’S PARTNER IS KILLED
HE’S SUPPOSED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT

Maybe no one liked Del Gilbert a whole lot, not the men he ruthlessly
did business with, not the women who discovered they weren’t
his only lover, not even his partner in the Gilbert and Blake literary
agency—me. But when I found him shot to death on the floor of his
office, I had no choice. I had to track down the person responsible.
And not just to lay Del to rest, either. Next to his body, the office
safe was wide open, and a contract worth millions was missing...

From the pen of MWA Grand Master Ed McBain comes this unforgettable
story of warring agents and Hollywood dealmaking, murder and scandal—and
passions igniting in the dark of night.

 - First publication in nearly 60 years!
 - Features a brand new cover painting by legendary illustrator
      Robert McGinnis
 - Also featuring Now Die In It, a bonus McBain novelette from
the pulps, starring private eye Matt Cordell from THE GUTTER AND
   THE GRAVE

 6x9-inch         perfect     bound;
   264 pages, $20.00Before he was a comic-book pioneer, Major Malcolm-Wheeler
Nicholson wrote adventure tales for the
great pulp magazines—and no run-of-the-mill pulp fiction
was it. The Major served as a cavalry officer on
the southwest border during the Mexican Revolution.
While the First World War raged in Europe,
he fought the Moro insurgency in the southern Philippines.
Then followed his strangest assignment, conducting espionage
in legendarily hostile Siberia. After the war he was
stationed in Western Europe. These places became
the settings for the majority of his hardboiled adventure
stories. His use of authentic detail, combined
with his superior storytelling ability, make
his stories difficult to put down. You read
one of the Major’s entrancing tales—and
your imagination is transported back to those real
         places of danger and daring!

This inaugural collection of the Major’s fiction
includes stories set in all four
        of his real-life arenas, originally
published in top adventure pulps: Adventure,
Argosy, The Popular Magazine. It is time for
the Major to receive his due—as one
of the genuine larger-than-life men of the pulps.
Included is an in-depth introduction by Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson,
the Major’s granddaughter.

 “Yes, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson
is one of the very, very few people responsible for the birth
of the comic book industry as the visionary
founder of what we today call DC
Comics. And, yes, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson
is one of the very, very few people responsible
       for giving the world Superman.”

 Michael Uslan,
Executive Producer of all the Batman movies,
Comic book historian, and author of his memoir,
        The Boy Who Loved Batman.

 “Not many adventure writers
can claim to have based their stories on their own exploits.
           Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson could—and because of
it, his evocations of heroism and combat
have a believability and a personal depth unlike anything
   else in pulp fiction.”

 Gerard Jones,
Author of Men of Tomorrow: Geeks, Gangsters and the
Birth of the Comic Book.

 Fall is almost upon
us, and that means the annual NJ Pulp Adventurecon draws near--an
afternoon of pawing through boxes of pulp magazines,
      vintage paperbacks, vintage movie memoribilia,
golden age comics and more! (Just like it says
in the banner, but we couldn't resist repeating ourselves!)
You'll find fifty tables of swell swag at this show
-- last year Robert Gould, son of pulp artist
John Fleming Gould, visited and brought several
magnificent pieces of original artwork for display and
sale. Brendan Faulkner had his usual extensive selection
of vintage movies, some of which are so rare the
actors and crew don't even remember them! Gary Lovisi,
the leader at Gryphon Publishing and hand-on-the-crank
at Paperback Parade magazine, had his usual fine publications,
and John Gunnison of Adventure House had his usual
extensive stock of vintage and rare pulp magazines. Mala
Mastroberte, our favorite pin-up model, was present ... and
that's good enough for us, but Mala also had a selection
of photos, books, and photo postcards.

"Assignment to Hell" by Frank Gruber
from SECRET AGENT "X", February, 1937
It was a clever setup - Handsome Danny Needham, gangster
supreme, using a little old tin-lizzie for his bank raids. It was
clever, too, the way that tin-lizzie could vanish into thin air. But
G-man Smith was banking on the chance that the robber-baron was so
clever he'd give himself away....

"Vengeance on Wheels" by Robert Turner from TEN DETECTIVE ACES,
  May, 1942
Kerry Marsh braved a killer's bullets - to fulfill a promise to
 the dead.

"The Case of Chips Galway" by Charlie Fuller from 10-STORY DETECTIVE,
     November, 1942
For three years Sergeant Kirker had been trying to crack the case
of the Galway rub-out. And now, he had a chance to trap the ruthless
killer. But when Kirker was ready to spring that trap, he had to
stick out his own neck for bullet bait.

 The Pulp Magazines
Project is an open-access digital archive dedicated to the
study and preservation of one of the twentieth century's most influential
literary & artistic forms: the all-fiction pulpwood magazine. The
Project also provides information on the history of this important
but long neglected medium, along with biographies of pulp authors, artists,
and their publishers.

At the heart of the Project's mission
is the archive itself. In summer 2011, it began with
a modest library of five representative first-generation
pulp titles from the early twentieth century. Over
time, the archive will expand, new magazines will
be digitized, and contextual materials added. Eventually,
the archive will feature a broad range of pre-1923
titles, post-1923 titles where copyright
has lapsed, and full volume runs of select titles
 from 1896 to 1946.

The Project is dedicated to fostering ties between
communities of collectors, fans, and academics
             devoted to pulp magazines, and
will offer opportunities for research and
collaboration to both scholars and enthusiasts
alike. We will provide information on upcoming conferences
and conventions, and promote new working relationships between
academics and the hundreds of pulp fans
and collectors beyond the college and university.

Archives Secret Agent "X" #7 Audiobook
 Octopus of Crime
by Paul Chadwick writing as Brant House
 Read by Milton Bagby
 Now available!

His true face unknown, his identity
forever buried in a secret government file, Secret Agent “X” came back
from the dead to take on the sinister sadists and evil extortionists
who prey on innocent Americans. A master of disguise who carries
a non-lethal gas gun, “X” the unknown is backed by a cabal of wealthy
citizens and is answerable only to the shadowy K-9 in Washington. |
 |
 |

Tentacles of terror reached over the country, spreading like a hideous
blight through the cities of America. The Underworld, welded
together under the secret symbol of a monster of crime, was organized
as never before. And Secret Agent “X,” master man-hunter, went up
against a genius of crime who stooped even to the ghastly horrors
  of medieval torture.

The enigma of enigmas, Secret Agent “X” has been deputized by a
high government official to battle the darkest, most diabolical
enemies of America before they sink their poisonous fangs into the
nation’s healthy core. Faceless and unsung, “X” infiltrates these
threats in a bewildering array of disguises.

Writer Paul Chadwick communicated the essence of the series with
the horrific titles of his novels. Chadwick specialized in telling
melodramatic mystery yarns saturated in an atmosphere of impending
doom. The pulp editors called these menace stories. Eventually,
these thrillers evolved into sub-genre known as weird menace. In Secret
Agent “X”, a cloud of diabolical danger hangs over the heads of every
innocent character until “X”, using his fists, his gas gun, or his loyal
operatives, shatters the threat for all time.

No one knew who Secret Agent “X” really was. Not his readers. Not
his editors. Not even his writer, conceivably. To this day in the
21st Century, his true identity is still a deep mystery. That’s
keeping a secret!

Follow the Man of a Thousand Faces as he confronts the menace of Octopus
of Crime, ripped from the pages of Secret Agent “X” magazine,
September 1934 and read with chilling intensity by Milton Bagby.

time, but the Cimmerian and the fire haired warrior women

There is nothing like this amazing and influential serial,
which introduced the “masked rider” character to the screen
and preceded the film versions of both Zorro and the Lone Ranger
and is wilder and more hard-hitting and realistic than either one.
It commands your complete attention and never lets go. No stunt
men here -- all the actors do their own riding, shooting, cliff-climbing
and everything else. Shot on location at the Shamrock Photoplay
Corporation studio in San Antonio, on the Medina river in Texas,
 and in Sabinas, Mexico.

The DVDFilm and Transfer Quality: The original nitrate image is
absolutely stunning in its detail and midtones.
There are scratches on the film sometimes but they do not detract.
The finest professional (Cintel) transfer equipment available
was used to create a digital version of this film.

This serial is presented in 9 half-hour chapters with the crucial
action of Chapter 1, the conclusion of Chapter 2 and a scene
from Chapter 10 reconstructed by a new cast (see below) and
most of the original cliffhanger division points retained, and mastered
on 3 DVDs with illustrated chapter menus.
