- Famous Story Magazine
- * ___ # 5, February 1926 (Delacorte, 25¢, pulp) This is an upmarket pulp, one that Ive never seen before, published by Delacorte (John Lockes checklist has it as beginning in October 1925 and having produced just the five issues though he admits thats an estimate). Non-pictorial cover. Advertising section to the fore (but not aft) on non-pulp paper. About 140 pages in total. Its an all-reprint magazine, subtitled The Worlds Best Stories from Modern and Classic Literature and as such its pretty much an exact equivalent of two British pulps of the same period which I have seen: the Amalgamated Presss Argosy (from 1926; nothing to do with the U.S. Argosy) and Hutchinsons Best Story (1926-1928?). But this particular American example contains the most amazingly eclectic line-up of stuff Ive ever seen between one set of magazine covers. There are three pages of poems from Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters, plus sundry other short poems (Byron, etc) and pages of literary tasters (brief quotes from this and that these last closely resembling the ones which ran between the stories in the British Argosy). - * ___ v18 #6, April 1958 (Columbia Publications, 35¢, digest) "A Double-Action Magazine", The Best in Fact and Fiction. Editor: Robert A.W. Lowndes / Assoc. Ed.: Marie A Park Editorial and executive offices at 241 Church Street; publisher Louis H. Silberkleit; business manager Maurice Coyne, per Statement Required by... on page 99. Cover (uncredited); Winter hillside. In foreground a man on foot with a lawmans badge fires his rifle at something offstage; behind him on a horse is his prisoner, arms tied behind him. Blurbs in Author, Author! say that Roe Richmond best known for innumerable sports stories, also many detective and previous westerns. E.E. Clement a regular in this magazine since 1943, and is also a steady contributor to Double Action Western, Real Western Stories, and Western Action, also does detective stories. Harlan Ellison is a new writer, so far as western stories are concerned, but hes widely known in the fantasy and science ficdtion field, and has made a number of names for himself in detectives, too. At present serving in the armed forces, Mr. Ellison looks forward to full-time authorship when Uncle Sam no longer needs him 24 hours a day. And Pete Carter, a cowhand in his time, specializes in articles about Indians and cavalry. Blurbs in the magazine advertise the April Double Action Western (with Gunhands and Plough Handles by Charles Long and Lawless Lead by Olin Grant); the April Real Western Stories (Ten complete, quick- trigger tales) with The Wide-Loopers by Elton Webster; Dead Mans Dollar by Edwin Booth; and The Bees Nest by Lon Williams); the current issue of Western Action, with Fast on the Draw by Art Cleveland, plus the usual ads for hair-restorers, High-Potency Capsules from Vitasafe Corp., and Royal Jelly from Jenasol Co. The articles read as at least semi-fictionalized, and I have my doubts about their historicity. . . but what do I know. I picked this up, of course, for the Ellison story, which was pretty good, and full of Ellisonian drama and emotion (a tough sheriff is unable to adjust to his now-peaceful town but refuses to ease up; at last the good citizens have to bushwhack him, turning him into a crippled drunk, to get him to leave them alone).
