MUNDY, TALBOT; pseudonym of William Lancaster Gribbon, (1879-1940); Mundy was easily the most popular of the writers working for Adventure. Although his adventure stories were in some ways commercial fiction, they were always superior to routine adventure fiction, for Mundy had the ability to bring to life exotic locations and historical characters. He had series of stories set in India, Africa, Egypt, and ancient Rome; all were popular.
Until recently, Mundy’s past was mysterious and the biographical data available was often contradictory. The recent researches of Peter Berresford Ellis have demonstrated that Talbot Mundy was in many ways his best work of fiction.
Talbot Mundy was born in London, England, into respectable circumstances. After his father died, Mundy became a “black sheep,” running away to India and Africa. There his adventures earned him jail sentences and a thoroughly justified reputation as an all-around cad, bounder and swindler. He was arrested several times, including once by Major Robert Foran (q.v.), and was completely untrustworthy around money or women.
In 1909 Mundy and his fourth wife came to the United States. Soon after their arrival, he received a severe beating from some gamblers and was hospitalized. While in the hospital, he reformed, became a Theosophist, and began writing. He soon became a best-seller and his last years were irreproachable. He died in Bradenton Beach, Florida. (chron.)
