- ADAMS, BILL; working name of Bertram Martin Adams, (1879-1953); English essayist, writer, poet; served as apprentice on British sailing ship Silberhorn. His 1937 autobiography Ships and Women is fascinating reading. Though he was not a great writer by mainstream standards, Adamss tales of the sea and sailors, poetic and written with the authority of personal experience, attracted a wide following and received favorable reviews when they were published in book form. He died in Walnut Creek, California. (chron.)
