          The Argosy — UK; Dec. 1865-Sep. 1901 (418 issues); Alexander Strahan (1865-1867), Mrs Henry Wood (Oct. 1867-1871), Bentley (1871-1898), Macmillan (1898-1899); monthly; smaller than standard format, modelled on Belgravia, initially priced 6d; editors Isa Craig (Dec. 1865-1867), Mrs Henry Wood (1867-Jun. 1887), Charles W. Wood (Jul. 1887-?); intended as a serious monthly “of tales, travels, essays and poems,” but its early serialization of the sensation novel “Griffith Gaunt” by Charles Reade (about bigamy) made it a racier magazine than planned; published Mrs Wood’s “Johnny Ludlow” stories.
