The Detective Magazine
Fortnightly British pulp magazine which ran between 1922-25. Each issue -- superbly illustrated by a variety of artists, most of them Amalgamated Press regulars -- is a mixture of fiction and non-fiction; the early issues contained the serialisation of Flat 2 by Edgar Wallace and offered a £500 prize to the reader who could come up with the best solution to the mystery; Wallaces own solution was published a few months after the third episode appeared.
George Dilnot, the editor, was a well-known crime journalist of the time, editing a number of volumes of books about famous trials; he was also a former editor of Answers, and wrote The Romance of the Amalgamated Press; clearly a favoured son of the company. Dilnot used his contacts at Scotland Yard and seems to have hired every ex-Chief Det.-Insp. that ever worked there to write articles. In the fiction department, he often relied on American reprints, but theres some very interesting British authors tucked away in these old pages too. [compiled by Steve Holland]
