Born in London; one of three author brothers and son of a journalist and author; accompanied his father in travels to Spain and the U.S., where (especially in the U.S.) he began writing prolifically under many pseudonyms; a journalist in Paris, writing for British papers; returned to England in 1873 and then spent some years in the U.S., contributing to Cassell’s Illustrated Family Newspaper.
