Hugh B. Cave
Pulp Elder statesman Hugh B. Cave has been put in hospice-care in failing health. The prognosis given was rather
grim saying time is short. Just the wear and things of a 94 year life finally catching up. He is is good spirits but very very frail and weak.
Hugh B. Cave - Murgunstrumm & Others - Now available!
Now available from Wildside Press are the hardcover and trade paperback editions of MURGUNSTRUMM AND OTHERS by Hugh B. Cave.  The book contains 26 stories and is illustrated with 35 drawings by Lee Brown Coye.

Long before he became the author of polished romances for the slick magazines, of best-seller novels and firsthand-researched travel books—Hugh B. Cave wrote some of the most grisly and chilling horror stories ever to appear in the pulps. Crawling forth from the Depression years—from the haunted pages of STRANGE TALES, WEIRD TALES, GHOST STORIES, SPICY MYSTERY STORIES, BLACK BOOK DETECTIVE MAGAZINE, THRILLING MYSTERY, and elsewhere—Wildside presents an omnibus of vintage nightmare, twenty-six of the best horror tales of Hugh B. Cave—gruesomely illustrated with over thirty-five drawings by Lee Brown Coye.

MURGUNSTRUMM AND OTHERS abounds with haunted houses, ravenous vampires, slobbering monsters, fiends human and inhuman, nights dark and stormy, corpses fresh and rotting. These stories exemplify the gothic horror thrillers of the 1930s—no-holds-barred lurid chillers of violent action and scream-in-the-night terror. Like a vintage horror movie, MURGUNSTRUMM AND OTHERS is an experience to be savoured best on a stormy, lonely night.

The retail price for the hardcover edition is $49.95.
The retail price for the trade paperback edition is $24.95.

James Rollins' SANDSTORM - Available June 29th!
James Rollins' (ICE HUNT, AMAZONIA, DEEP FATHOM, EXCAVATION, and SUBTERRANEAN) next thriller, SANDSTORM, will be available on June 29th.

An inexplicable explosion rocks the antiquities collection of a London museum -- a devastating blast that sets off alarms in clandestine organizations around the world, as the race begins to determine how it happened, why it happened, and what it means. Lady Kara Kensington's family paid a high price in money and blood to found the gallery that now lies in ruins. And her search for answers is about to lead Kara and her friend Safia al-Maaz, the gallery's brilliant and beautiful curator, into a world they never dreamed actually existed. For new evidence exposed by the tragedy suggests that Ubar, a lost city buried beneath the Arabian desert, is more than mere legend ... and that something astonishing is waiting there.

Two extraordinary women and their guide, the international adventurer Omaha Dunn, are not the only ones being drawn to the desert. Former U.S. Navy SEAL Painter Crowe, a covert government operative and head of an elite counterespionage team, is hunting down a dangerous turncoat, Crowe's onetime partner, to retrieve the vital information she has stolen. And the trail is pointing him toward Ubar.

But the many perils inherent in a death-defying trek deep into the savage heart of the Arabian Peninsula pale before the nightmarish secrets to be unearthed at journey's end. What is hidden below the sand is more than a valuable relic of ancient history. It is an ageless power that lives and breathes -- an awesome force that could create a utopia or tear down everything humankind has built during millennia of civilization. Many lives have already been destroyed by ruthless agencies dedicated to guarding its mysteries and harnessing its might. And now the end may be at hand for Safia, for Kara, for Crowe, and for all the interlopers who wish to expose its mysteries, as it prepares to unleash the most terrible storm of all ...

King Conan
According to Moviehole, Warner Brothers doesn't want to greenlight KING CONAN unless Arnold plays the character to ensure the film be financially successful at the box-office. Warner Brothers wanted Triple H. to take over the Conan role but over the last few months have waned to the idea. The WB knows if someone like Triple H. stars as Conan there is a huge risk with the film flopping (much like The Punisher with an unknown Tom Jane as the lead). The WB wants to wait for Arnold to finish his term as Governor and then greenlight the film with his box-office name attached in the last CONAN film (which will now go with the title CONAN THE KING instead of KING CONAN).

Reportedly, John Milius would love nothing more than to get his good friend back as CONAN and is warming up to the idea of ditching HHH (who was going to star in Milius' other action film) and waiting for Arnold to come back to films in a couple of short years."

King Kong
Thomas Kretschmann ["Resident Evil : Apocalypse"] is talking to Peter Jackson about playing a part in his remake of "King Kong" for Universal Pictures, says The Hollywood Reporter. Kretschmann would play opposite Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody as the boat captain who transports the king-sized gorilla of the film's title to America.

The screenplay by Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens is based on the original story by Merian C. Cooper and Edgar Wallace. Jackson will employ the latest motion picture technology to cinematically portray the timeless tale of the beast and his beauty. He will expand on the chapters of the tale that take place in the mysterious and dangerous jungles of Skull Island, and his Kong promises to be a unique and breathtaking creation.

WALTER BAUMHOFER: PULP ART MASTERS by John P. Gunnison
For just a few short years, Walter Baumhofer sprang into pop culture history as the first artist to imagine Doc Savage, The Man of Bronze. Baumhofer's unofficial title of "King of the Pulps" was well earned, as most publishers were envious of those few firms that he painted covers and produced art that sold the magazines well beyond the stories themselves. Baumhofer ultimately made the move into lucrative advertising and slick markets in the mid-thirties, but he left behind pulp covers that were imitated for years.

THE AGE OF CONAN: Hyborian Adventures
The Official Conan website has posted information on the upcoming AGE OF CONAN: Hyborian Adventures series.  THE AGE OF CONAN: Hyborian Adventures is a slate of original fantasy-adventure novels set in the world of Hyboria, the land of Conan of Cimmeria, which was created by legendary pulp-era writer, Robert E. Howard. Conan Properties is packaging three trilogies and one three-book YA series for publisher Ace/Berkley.

The initial launch features three associated trilogies, each set in a different Hyborian realm. “There are so many untold stories in Hyboria, not just about Conan,” notes Theodore Berquist, CEO of Conan Properties, who is overseeing the series. “These books feature new adventures and characters, set during the time when Conan is king of Aquilonia, a period in Conan’s life taken from Robert E. Howard’s sole Conan novel, The Hour of the Dragon. This is generally accepted as the last true Conan tale if one were constructing a timeline, and puts the Cimmerian’s age at about forty-five. We felt that putting the Age of Conan stories in this era was the best way to explore other areas of Hyboria without disturbing already established continuity.”

The three Young Adult novels are stand-alone tales, separate from the core trilogies, with their own storylines and continuing characters (though they will conform to overall Conan history).

Currently in production, the writers for the series are Loren L. Coleman, J. Steven York, Richard A. Knaak and Jeff Mariotte. Cover paintings for the entire series are being done by Justin Sweet. The first trilogy is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2005.

Visit The Official Conan website for full details.

BLOOD ‘N' THUNDER #7 - Now Available!
The Spring 2004 issue of BLOOD ‘N' THUNDER, our Mystery/Suspense number, is now available.
Novelist and noted pop-culture historian Ron Goulart has contributed "The Haunted World of Cornell Woolrich," in which he reminisces about his relationship with the brilliant but troubled writer once called "the Poe of the 20th Century."

In another article, novelist/pulp scholar Will Murray debunks the assertion by Tod Browning biographer David J. Skal that the famed director wrote pulp mysteries under the pen name Charles R. Allen.

Earl Derr Biggers' Charlie Chan made his first film appearance in a 1926 serial, THE HOUSE WITHOUT A KEY, which BnT editor Ed Hulse covers at length in this issue's installment of "Cliffhanger Classics." (The film itself is lost, but Hulse reconstructs it from the sole surviving copy of the original shooting script, which he compares to the Biggers novel.) Old-Time Radio historian Martin Grams, Jr. writes about the "I Love a Mystery" series—a perennial favorite of OTR buffs—and the 1945 Columbia film adapted from one of its best-remembered continuities: "The Decapitation of Jefferson Monk."

BnT Associate Publisher Mark Trost reviews the 1935 first issue of Popular Publications' long-running pulp, DETECTIVE TALES, and, in an article reprinted from a 1941 issue of WRITER'S DIGEST, veteran pulpster Henry Kuttner writes about his efforts to master the mystery-story formula.

As usual, the issue is copiously illustrated with artwork, photographs and cover reproductions.

Sometime in the distant past, two thieves leave the city of Uzuldaroum and enter the jungle in search of a lost city and fabulous treasures.  black & white, 24 pages $2.95

The Colour Out of Darkness by John Pelan
Cemetery Dance Publications has announced The Colour Out of Darkness by John Pelan
To be published in 2004 -- reserve your copy now!
In his classic story "The Call of Cthulhu" H.P. Lovecraft wrote: "The cult would never die till the stars came right again, and the secret priests would take great Cthulhu from His tomb to revive His subjects and resume His rule of earth. The time would be easy to know, for then mankind would have become as the Great Old Ones; free and wild and beyond good and evil, with laws and morals thrown aside and all men shouting and killing and revelling in joy. Then the liberated Old Ones would teach them new ways to shout and kill and revel and enjoy themselves, and all the earth would flame with a holocaust of ecstasy and freedom."

Lovecraft was right, though he only glimpsed a tiny sliver of the true horror that governs the secret history of the world. The truth is much, much worse as several young people are about to discover. The miracle drug "Essence" opens doors of perception hithereo undreamed of, but there's a heavy price to paid. The price is to belong body and soul to nameless horrors that were old when the earth was young. Nobody rides for free, and damn few get out alive…

Lettered Edition: $125

Further information provided by Wandering Star's Jim Keegan:
Wandering Star's ultimate goal is to put out the entire library of REH's writings in illustrated limited-edition hardbacks along with mass-market paperbacks through Del Rey. It takes, on average, about two years to produce
one of the books. So the idea here was to create a publication that highlighted the characters from volumes already
released by WS, but more importantly to create new and exclusive paintings to preview some of the characters
from upcoming volumes in the series.

Each painting is accompanied by character/story first publication bibliographies and relevant excepts of REH's correspondence compiled by Rusty Burke. There are also many (I think there's about 15) rare photographs of Howard himself reproduced directly from the originals.

The book is oversized and measures 9.25" X 13.5". It's full color throughout. 32 pages printed on very heavy stock, and spiral bound across the top -- kinda like a calendar. It retails for $24.95 and will be shrink-wrapped.

The breakdown of subjects/characters and artists is as follows:

Cover: by Gary Gianni
ALMURIC: by Mark Schultz
BRAN MAK MORN: by Gary Gianni
BRECKINRIDGE ELKINS: by Scott Gustafson
BOXING STORIES: by Gary Gianni
CONAN: by Greg Manchess
CRUSADES STORIES: by Tom Kidd
EL BORAK: by Jim & Ruth Keegan
HORROR STORIES (The Thing on the Roof): by Mike Mignola
JAMES ALLISON (Marchers of Valhalla): by Scott Caple
KULL: by Justin Sweet
RED SONYA: by Jim Silke
SKULLFACE: by Glen Orbik
SOLOMON KANE: by Gary Gianni
SWORD WOMAN: by Mark Schultz

Wandering Star will have its usual booth at the San Diego Con in July and will have copies there (as well as the new CONAN VOLUME 2 hardback, of course).  Jim Keegan, Gary Gianni, Mark Schultz, Mike Mignola, Jim Silke, and Justin Sweet will be in attendance.

Also, because some WS collectors requested it, there's also going to be a very limited number of copies signed by all of the artists involved (probably 100 or less. We haven't decided on a price for that yet. It'll depend on how much it costs to ship 100 books around the US for the artists that aren't local to sign).

The book will be available through Diamond (in August/September) and Bud Plant
They'll be ready to ship just before San Diego Comic Con in the middle of July.

The Pulp Rack - Two new additions!
First, an article by Finnish writer Juri Nummelin: "The American Westerns in Finland: From Pulps to Paperbacks." According to Juri, "The Western has been widely read and published in Finland for a long time. It has been a popular genre with the working classes and, even though it has not always been accepted by the literary elite, it has been a popular genre with young readers. Many classics have been translated into Finnish, and they have influenced many Finnish writers."

My thanks to Juri for this article. I'll be adding some cover scans to accompany his essay in the next few days. And we'll have another article from Juri soon. You can find Juri's current essay at this URL:

Next up is Part One of a "lost" novel by H. Bedford-Jones: THE CROWN OF COYOPAN. This was originally published in THE AMERICAN WEEKLY, the Hearst Newspaper Sunday Supplement, in six installments, starting on April 23, 1939, and ending on May 28, 1939. This is its first appearance since that time. It was discovered by Victor A. Berch and transcribed by Peter Ruber. My thanks to both of these guys for their work.

The Pulp Rack will be serializing this novel in six parts. Part One comprises Chapters 1 and 2. It's a fun and exciting story in the best pulp fiction fashion.  You can start reading THE CROWN OF COYOPAN at this URL: http://pulprack.com/index5.html

Enjoy! And thanks again for your patronage.

In a novel that rivals his classic Renaissance, a team of scientists, exploring g the ruins of an ancient civilization in the asteroid belt discover a strange artifact containing a giant humanoid alien. What type of mentality would attempt to preserve itself through a planetary catastrophe that destroyed its entire race? STERANKO - Production designer on new Magnus Robot Fighter series!
Recently, iBooks announced that Louise Simonson  would be writing their upcoming revival of Magnus, Robot Fighter. This new incarnation of the character will be based on the original series by Russ Manning, rather than the Valiant/Acclaim series of the 1990s. When contacted, Simonson shared her thoughts on the project: Magnus is a really enjoyable character. Manning gave him a rich environment but left a lot of questions unanswered. Which is great for anyone who wants to continue a series.

For instance: Where did Magnus really come from? What was the ultimate agenda of 1-A, the robot who raised him? Why a North Am society structured like that one was? How did it come to be that way? What of the present scientific advances that seems to be steering technology in different directions than those shown in Magnus?

Especially, the question of how man lives with the increasing intelligent machines he's begun to create is even more relevant now than it was when Magnus was originally created.

An artist has yet to be named for the project, however Jim Steranko is the production designer, and may also provide the covers. Current plans call for three 48-page full color graphic novels, with the first to be released in 2005.

Terminator 4 and 5
C2 productions owned and operated by Andrew Vanja and Mario Kassar want James Cameron to return for the fifth Terminator film. They are planning to offer Cameron $20 million plus percentages of the film if he'll return.  Both are still planning on Schwarzenegger to return for the fourth and fifth films.  As for T4 before Cameron's return... don't expect the terminator to a baby sitter as he was in T2 & T3. They want the terminator to be nastier and meaner than he was in the original film.

UNCOVERED NAMED POPULAR CULTURE BOOK OF THE YEAR
BY FOREWORD MAGAZINE AT BOOK EXPO AMERICA

Silver Spring, MD, June 8, 2004 – In a ceremony held June 4, 2004 at BookExpo America, the industry’s tradeshow, Uncovered: The Hidden Art Of The Girlie Pulps by Douglas Ellis was awarded the Gold Medal for Popular Culture Book of the Year by ForeWord Magazine.

Uncovered reproduces in full color more than 400 stunning “girlie” pulp magazine covers – tame by today’s standards – from the 1920s and ‘30s.  In addition, Uncovered examines the efforts of blue-nose groups to ban the magazines from the newsstands or have them declared indecent, seized and burned. Sold “under the counter” when first published, their “pin-up” art and the struggles of their publishers with the censors has remained hidden until now.

Of its prestigious Book of the Year awards – which are determined by a jury of librarians, booksellers and reviewers – ForeWord has said that they were “…established in 1998 to focus librarian and bookseller attention on the literary achievements of independent publishers and their authors...[The awards] take into consideration editorial excellence, professional production, narrative originality, author credentials and the value the title adds to the category.”

Uncovered has been called “the best book ever done on the subject” (Bud Plant, Bud Plant Comic Art), “an enthusiastically recommended addition to personal and academic American Popular History reference collections” (Midwest Book Review) and “a wonderful pictorial chronicle of the magazines of yesterday” (Frank M. Robinson, editor of Pulp Culture).

Adventure House is a leading publisher of pulp art and reference books and pulp fiction reprints.

KING KONG
According to The Hollywood Reporter,  Andy Serkis, who inspired the creation of the CGI-created Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" films, will perform the movement for the hulking ape in the director's remake of "King Kong." The actor will provide the motion capture reference for Kong, who will be created through CGI. Serkis will also appear in the flesh as a cook named Lumpy who is part of the crew that sails to Skull Island where Kong lives.

"I expect this time round will be a very different experience for both Andy and myself as we'll actually get to shoot extended drama sequences together," says Peter Jackson. "It will be a little weird seeing Andy out of his Gollum gimp suit -- and I hope we can both make the adjustment!"

Jackson also adds, "While Andy will provide very valuable onset reference, this doesn't mean we will be softening Kong by attempting to humanize him. The power of the story lies in the fact that this is a savage beast from a hostile environment, and we don't intend to compromise that."

Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody round out the cast.

The Toymaker: The Classic SF Collection by Ramond F. Jones
SF CLASSIC OUT OF PRINT FOR OVER 50 YEARS!
Here is the legendary first collection of stories by Hugo Award nominee Raymond F. Jones. Selling for over $100 in the only other edition, this stunning book contains what critic Mike Ashley hails as the author's "best and most original work … competence and originality." When Analog, then called Astounding, reviewed "The Toymaker, here is what they had to say: "'The Children's Room, the author's favorite, is a highly human document of mutants, and of a momentous decision affecting the future welfare of mankind. Technologists go nuts in 'The Model Shop,' when a chronportation company makes a misshipment to our antiquarian age. In 'The Deadly Host,' Earth is menaced by mechanical parasites from the planet Sian. Humor is the mood of 'Utility,' a tale of interplanetary trading. 'Forecast is the stormy saga of Weather Central. And, who can forget the Imaginos, those uncanny peace-guarding puppets who protect the galaxy in the title story. Jones' first volume is a joymaker." We are certain you will agree.

The Heads of Cerberus: The First Alternate Universe Novel by Francis Stevens
Published only once in book form a half-century ago in a collector's edition of 1500 copies, this great science-fantasy sells for more than $100 today. Written by the woman whose pseudonym was Francis Stevens, it has been hailed as the first alternate history novel. . Fantasy master H. P. Lovecraft hailed Francis Stevens as among "the top grade of writers." "The Heads of Cerberus" tells of "an alternate-world Philadelphia, reached by a handful of this-world people. This Philadelphia is one in which the political corruptors have become ruthless autocrats, ruling through phony "civic service" competitions which result in cynically brutal enslavement of the people. The name of William Penn has become, under the organizational label of "Penn Service," the very fountainhead of viciously depraved, doctorial government. Definitely a classic and fun to read." SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW - Now Available!
The novelization of the new film SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW by Kevin Anderson is now available.  It includes eight pages of photos and storyboard illustrations from the upcoming film.

New York City, 1939. Crack investigative reporter Polly Perkins unearths plans to create a violent new World of Tomorrow. Soon after, a gigantic mechanical robots are unleashed upon New York and other major cities of the world, melting out death and destruction in their wake. The call goes out to Joe Sullivan, leader of the heroic Flying Legion, to save the day. As Joe and Polly circle the globe, encountering mutant creatures, monstrous mechanical machines, and dangerous tentacles robots, they are drawn even close to the lair of the evil genius George Totenkopf. Together, they must battle the forces of the World of Tomorrow in order to save the world of today.  264 pages, ISBN: 0451411633,  $6.99.  The publisher is Onyx Books.

SKY CAPTAIN had been set to open a week before SPIDER-MAN 2, but Sony recently announced that it was moving the web-slinging sequel up to June 29, leaving SKY CAPTAIN just four days in the spotlight.  Paramount vice chairman Rob Friedman said, "To have a window of a mere four days seemed to be wrong.  We have a great movie that the public is excited about and the media is excited about. With think it's a bigger opportunity in what is right now an extraordinarily crowded summer to put (the movie) in a less competitive situation where we will have a greater opportunity."  Friedman added that the visuals weren't a holdup.  "It would definitely have made it," he says.  But with the new date, the studio will be able to conduct extensive screenings and promote the film heavily for several months at events like Comic-Con International. SKY CAPTAIN debuts September 17th.

STAR WARS

DUM DUM 2004 - June 25-26, 2004
The 2004 DUM DUM is set for June 25-26 in Fort Collins, Colorado.  Honoring Glenn Morris, 1936 Olympic champion and film Tarzan No. 9, and enjoying the beauty of Colorado will be two of the main attractions of the 2004 DUM DUM.  Mike Chapman will host the event.  He is the author of the book The Gold and The Glory, which is the biography of Glenn Morris.  He also hosted the 1997 DUM DUM in Newton, Iowa.

The mayor is going to declare Saturday, June 26, as Glenn Morris Day in Fort Collins," said Mike. "He has pledged to help support the weekend event in any way he can. And so has the director of the convention and visitors bureau. They are really excited about this event coming to Fort Collins.

The Dum Dum will be held at the Ramada Inn, which sits just 100 yards off of Interstate 25, the busiest freeway in the entire state. It connects Fort Collins (a city of 150,000) to Denver (50 miles south) and Cheyenne, Wyoming (35 miles north). The basic rate is $59 a night for Dum Dum attendees. You can call 970-484-4660 to make your reservation. Mike also met with officials from Colorado State University, where Morris was a standout athlete in both football and track. The college officials are also excited about the event coming to Fort Collins. "Colorado State University athletic people think this is wonderful." said Mike. "They are going to promote the event on their
web site and in press releases."

The Dum Dum weekend will include showing of Glenn's Tarzan film, Tarzan's Revenge, and two other films he appeared in.  Decathlon Champion is a ten-minute short produced shortly after his gold-medal performance in the Berlin Olympics. Hold That Co-Ed is a campus comedy starring George Murphy, Joan Davis and John Barrymore. Morris plays a college football star and is seen throughout the film.

A local running club is hosting a Glenn Morris 5K run on Friday, June 25. It will begin at 6 p.m. at the South College Fieldhouse — the very spot where Glenn Morris trained for the Olympics in 1936. Dum Dum attendees will be able to walk on the indoor track where Glenn trained and see the brand new "Glenn Morris-CSU Track Hall of Fame" that has been established in the South College Fieldhouse.

The gold medal that Glenn won in '1936 in Berlin in the decathlon will be on display during the DUM DUM.  Morris Ververs, a former high school principal in Glenn's hometown of Simla, Colorado, is the custodian of the gold medal. He and Jim Larson, who served with Glenn Morris in the Navy during World War II, will both attend the convention.

Denny Miller, who played Tarzan in 1959 and starred on the TV hit series Wagon Train, will be one of the special guests in Fort Collins. He has just written his autobiography and it will be available at the DUM DUM.

A panel discussion is being planned to discuss the careers of the four Olympic athletes who played Tarzan: Johnny Weissmuller, Herman Brix, Buster Crabbe and Glenn Morris. Mike says he is working on several other major guests.  More details will be forthcoming soon.

Schedule:
Friday June 25th: Huckster room opens at 10:00 AM, Glenn Morris 5k Run at 6:00 PM, Showing of three Morris films at 8:00PM
Saturday, June 26th: Huckster room opens at 9:00 AM, panel discussion on Olympic Tarzans, Showing of three Morris films throughout the day.

Fading Shadows - Coming Soon in ACTION ADVENTURE STORIES!
Death In The Desert (Phantom Detective) by Robert Wallace
Sky Patrol (The Lone Eagle) by Lt. Scott Morgan
Foundation - Film of Asimov's trilogy is on its way!
Screenwriter Jeff Vintar has told Sci Fi Wire that he's working on a screenplay adaptation of two novels from the late Isaac Asimov's well-known Foundation trilogy. You may remember that IGN FilmForce first broke the news that Vintar was adapting Foundation last fall. Vintar is condensing the trio of works into two films, Foundation and Second Foundation.  The Foundation books cover a vast story spanning several centuries, certainly a remarkable challenge for moviemaking. Vintar plans to summarize many of the first book's events as backstory in his two films, while concentrating the storyline on the second chronological half of Asimov's trilogy.

Vintar has been hired to do the job by 20th Century Fox, who will probably make both films if the screenplays are approved. No timeline has been given for actual production yet, and no director has been named.

Joseph Clement Coll: A Legacy in Line - Coming in July!
Flesk Publications presents Joseph Clement Coll: A Legacy in Line by John Fleskes. Introduction by Gary Gianni. Essay by Nick Meglin.

Joseph Clement Coll defined the look of adventure illustration. No one has ever captured the menace of the Devil Doctor or Athelstan King’s journeys into mystic lands the way Coll did. The struggle between the gallant Sir Denis Nayland Smith and his arch-nemesis the insidious Dr. Fu Manchu in Sax Rohmer’s classic sagas breathe and move on the page. Every nuance of form and fantasy one could imagine is evoked in Talbot Mundy’s incredible tale of intrigue, King of the Khyber Rifles. These epic encounters of heroes and villains locked in combat make up only a small portion of the nearly 250 illustrations in this — the largest collection of Joseph Clement Coll’s art ever produced.

This lost and forgotten art has now been collected in Flesk Publications’ 208 page, Joseph Clement Coll: A Legacy in Line. Most of the 235 black & white and 15 color pieces in this second volume on Coll have been reprinted for the first time in decades. Many of these illustrations have been shot from the original drawings — including eight sketches that have never been reproduced. Here are incredible illustrations by one of the world’s greatest artists at the pinnacle of his career. It is art so expressive, so powerful that it will grab you and drag you wholly into whatever world Coll’s imagination, and pen, chooses to go to next.

The deluxe edition is limited to 300 numbered copies, signed by the publisher, John Fleskes, and contributors Nick Meglin and Gary Gianni, on an extra bonus color plate, reproducing a previously unpublished sketch by Joseph Clement Coll.

JUDGMENT NIGHT by C.L. Moore - Shipping June 30th!
JUDGMENT NIGHT by C.L. Moore from Red Jacket Press has been re-scheduled due to unanticipated printing delays. The new publication date is June 30th.

Originally released in 1952 from Gnome Press, JUDGMENT NIGHT collects five Moore novellas from the pages of editor John W. Campbell, Jr.’s ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION magazine. Chosen by the author herself as the best of her longer-form writing, these stories show a gifted wordsmith working at the height of her talents: JUDGMENT NIGHT (first published in August and September, 1943) balances a lush rendering of a future galactic empire with a sober meditation on the nature of power and its inevitable loss; “The Code” (July, 1945) pays homage to the classic Faust with modern theories and Lovecraftian dread; “Promised Land” (February, 1950) and “Heir Apparent” (July, 1950) both document the grim twisting that mankind must undergo in order to spread into the solar system; and “Paradise Street” (September, 1950) shows a futuristic take on the old western conflict between lone hunter and wilderness-taming settlers. Except for “Judgment Night,” all of these pieces were originally published under the pen name Lawrence O’Donnell.

JUDGMENT NIGHT is 352 pages for $39.95.
Each limited edition "facsimile" reprint volume is a complete reproduction of the original first edition, and includes a full-color dust jacket, protective slipcase, and biographical information about the author.

CHILDREN OF THE ATOM by Wilmar Shiras, also featuring material from ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION magazine, will ship at the same time. Originally published by Gnome Press in 1953, 224 Pages, $39.95.

All Red Jacket Press titles are available from Pathway Book Service at 1-800-345-6665.

Lost Treasures from the Pulps - Update!
THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF BILL BRENT and THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF THE MOON MAN should be available at Pulpcon in July.
THE COMPLEAT ADVENTURES OF BILL BRENT by Frederick C. Davis, introduction by Robert Weinberg
Bill Brent works for a newspaper, and as punishment he is assigned the "Lorna Lorne's Lost Lover's Advice Column" by his editor. However, inquiries for advise addressed to Lorna often result in misadventures, murder, and mayhem. The fifteen stories to be published in THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF BILL BRENT, by Frederick C. Davis, introduced by Robert Weinberg, were originally published in DIME DETECTIVE MAGAZINE from May 1941 through June 1946. A folio-sized hardcover, this "Lost Treasure from the Pulps" will retail for $75.

THE COMPLEAT MOON MAN by Frederick C. Davis
The Moon Man was Stephen Thatcher, the son of the city police chief, Peter Thatcher. Stephen was a 25-year-old police Sergeant with what seemed to be a normal life, including a fiancee (the gutsy Sue McEwen, an amateur sleuth who often got involved in the Moon Man’s cases) and friends. But at night he put on a domed helmet (with one-way Argus glass) and a long black cloak and did the Robin Hood thing, robbing from the criminals to pay the poor.  This two volume set will include all of the Moon Man stories ever published.  The price is $175.

THE SHINING HAND AND OTHER TALES OF TERROR by J. E. Muddock (Dick Donovan)
Midnight House is pleased to announce a new edition of the fabulously rare collection Stories Weird & Wonderful by J.E. Muddock. Muddock, who went on to fame as "Dick Donovan" authored his first collection of weird tales in 1889. This volume is considered by experts to be far more scarcer than even his later book, TALES OF TERROR. Midnight House is pleased to not only reprint these classic ghostly tales of the Victorian era, but to offer an expanded edition with the addition of the novella "The Prophecy" which was written by Muddock in his later years and published under the Donovan byline in Chamber's Journal in 1926.

This highly sought after collection of horror stories has been unavailable since its first appearance in 1889. This new edition features a scholarly essay on Muddock by Bram Stoker Award-winning editor John Pelan and gathers together these outstanding stories of the macabre that have previously been found only in the original volume or in scarce anthologies. This book marked an important turning point in the development of the modern ghost story and is a must for any serious collection of weird fiction. With wenty-three chilling tales spanning over three-hundred pages, there are many hours of chilling reading ahead. Midnight House is dedicated to the preservation of classic horror and weird fiction in handsome, inexpensive editions. Printings are limited to 500 numbered casebound copies with sewn signatures. THE SHINING HAND AND OTHER TALES OF TERROR features a striking cover by noted artist Allen Koszowski.

Robert Bloch
Subterranean Press has posted the table of contents for the upcoming Robert Bloch book "This Fear Planet and Other Unusual Destinations: The Reader's Bloch, Volume 1" edited by the excellent Stefan R. Dziemianowicz.

It's no secret that a hefty helping of Robert Bloch's fiction remains unreprinted or uncollected since its original publication in pulp magazines, digests and anthologies of original stories. What many readers don't know is how good much of this fiction is. These stories run the full gamut of genres for which Bloch wrote--fantasy, horror, science fiction, mystery--and all showcase Bloch's inimitable style. We can't presume to know why Bloch never collected them in his lifetime, even though he sanctioned the reprinting of some in anthologies. Possibly, he felt they didn't fit the scheme of specific books. Regardless, the stories provide interesting snapshots of Bloch's career at the time they were written, and the evolution of story markets where they appeared.

Subterranean Press's The Reader's Bloch series was conceived to give these stories a well-deserved nesting place. It is currently planned to run to two, possibly three volumes, containing approximately fifty stories spanning Bloch's career from the late 1930s to the early 1990s. The series will stand independent of The Lost Bloch series, which concentrated primarily on novella and short-novel length works, but readers who enjoyed those volumes will find the same fun and thrills in these books. Currently, we've planned a volume devoted primarily to science fiction, and another primarily to horror. When you're talking Robert Bloch, however, genre categories have little meaning. Several of the science fiction stories Bloch contributed to AMAZING, STARTLING STORIES, FANTASTIC ADVENTURES and other pulps would have fit comfortably into any of his horror collections. Likewise some of crime stories he contributed to DIME MYSTERY, DETECTIVE TALES and MAMMOTH  MYSTERY. Most of the latter were never reprinted, and more's the pity since they show Bloch mastering the hardboiled idiom and dealing with ghoulish themes that chart a line of direct descent from his early horror tales to the psychological suspense novels and stories that became his trademark in the 1950s and '60s.

Only 750 copies of this first volume are being done, so get your reservations in now.
The limited edition retails for $40 and the lettered edition retails for $150.
Visit the Subterranean Press website for complete details and to order.
