Journey back to an Age of Aces! Their familiar war cry rings out: "Let's Go!" And the greatest fighting war-birds on the Western Front are once again roaring into action - The Three Mosquitoes!

Flying in their usual close V, the three khaki colored Spads were piloted by U.S. Intelligence's finest. In the lead Spad was their impetuous young leader Kirby, while flanking him were "Shorty" Carn, the mild eyed, corpulent little Mosquito and lanky Travis, eldest and wisest of the trio. These three men were always raring for action, always recklessly anxious to go out and match their wings against any odds! Although Ralph Oppenheim had never had a flying lesson, he created one of the longest running aviation series to grace the pages of Popular Publications.

Here we present a trio of 1933 Mosquito adventures from DARE-DEVIL ACES: "The Wizard Ace," "The Cannonball Ace" & "The Midnight Ace." We have also included a bibliography of The Three Mosquitoes adventures which appeared over twelve years, through nine different magazines, and in over five dozen stories!

The Pulp Rack - New additions!
Monte Herridge graces our Pulp Rack again with another article about a series character from Detective Fiction Weekly (formerly Flynn's). Inspector Porky Neale appeared in a series of stories by Roland Phillips that ran in DFW from about 1930-34.

The article also includes a listing of the series as it appeared in DFW.  Monte's doing a great job of turning the light of day on many of these lost characters from DFW. Many thanks to him for these efforts and for sharing with The Pulp Rack's patrons.  You'll find the article here:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/08/inspector_porky_1.html

Today's post is a look at H.P. Lovecraft's novella (novelette?), "At the Mountains of Madness," (AMM) published as a serial in ASTOUNDING. Our essay looks at AMM as a sequel to Edgar Poe's only novel, THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM, and how Lovecraft played off Poe's seeming ambivalence -- intentional or coincidental -- toward his story to inform the horror of Lovecraft's later tale.

The essay links off of the site's "Jules Verne: Pre-Pulp Pioneer Extraordinaire" page at http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/04/jules_verne_pre_1.html, but you can access it directly at this URL: http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/08/the_mountains_o.html

Adventure House - Pulp cover products are now available!
Adventure House has produced a website with tons of pulp images.  What's so great about that?  Well this site allows you to directly order prints, coffee mugs, t-shirts (either black or white shirt), canvas prints, enlargements...well you get the idea.

Currently we have over 700 covers uploaded to view and order.  The images are optimized for smaller prints, with a maximum image size of 11x14 (not really recommended), we can, upon request download a higher resolution image for larger prints.  Be sure to check the results of cropping before ordering.  Because of the pulp format, you need to set the print to "Fitted Image" to normally get a full sized image.  Although there is a watermark visible on the photographs when you view them on the browser, this watermark of course won't be there once the image is printed.

Take a look around and have some pure pulp image fun!

The Pulp Rack - New addition!
"Cities of the Fantastic: A Contemporary Series of Verne-Inspired Graphic Novels"
Today's post looks at a series of European graphic novels greatly influenced by Jules Verne.  Jules Verne's works continue to influence and inspire artists today. For contemporary examples, readers need only look at the graphic novels – or albums, to use the word typically given European works of this type – in the Cities of the Fantastic (Cités Obscures) series by Benoit Peeters and Francois Schuiten. Written by Peeters, who is French, and drawn by Schuiten, who is Belgian, the books in the series present a picture of the present or future as seen from the past – specifically, a future depicted according to a 19th Century extrapolation of mechanical science that is part steampunk, part world of marvels, part dystopia. The result is rather Vernian in its feel, thanks greatly to Schuiten's art style, which suggests the engraving style used for reproducing illustrations in 19th and early 20th Century publications. Further, such consistently amazing architectural wonders haven't been seen in the graphic storytelling form since the days of Winsor McCay's Little Nemo.

You'll find the essay at this URL:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/08/cities_of_the_f.html

Robert E. Howard Foundation - The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard, Volume 2
Pre-ordering is now available for The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard, Volume 2: 1930-1932.
This volume has over 100 letters, and is well over 500 pages. This volume attempts to collect all known REH letters written during this time span. Several of these letters have never been published before, and many, many others have only been published in a redacted state, missing poetry, fiction, or other content. All that has been restored for this volume.

For those wishing to learn about REH, this is one of the core collections to have. REH talks politics, current events, and the occasional bohemian humor with his friends, rips into HPL over civilization v. barbarism, swaps Texas folklore with August Derleth, chats it up with editors and fans. A fascinating collection. It also includes another fine cover by Jim & Ruth Keegan.

This volume is off at the printers, and is expected to ship in late October / early November. Those who already have a copy of Volume 1, the same copy number in Volume 2 will be held for you. And of course those who have already paid for all three don't have to do anything, we'll ship as soon as they arrive.

Complete ordering information is posted on the REH Foundation website:

Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane
In today's Daily Mail in the UK, it's reported that James Purefoy, who played Marc Anthony in 'Rome' recently, is in negotiations to play Solomon Kane in Michael Bassett's film. Thankfully, Robert E Howard does get a mention in the brief article as Kane's creator.

Conan - Millenium Films acquires rights for feature film!
In a seven-figure deal, Millennium Films has acquired the rights to make a new series of pics based on Robert E. Howard's mythical conqueror Conan the Barbarian. Paradox Entertainment prexy-CEO Fredrik Malmberg chose Millennium after extricating the rights from Warner Bros. last spring and putting them on the market with strict progress-to-production provisions in mid-June.

Malmberg will produce with Millennium's Avi Lerner, Boaz Davidson, Joe Gatta and George Furla. Millennium either will fully finance or partner with a distributor, with discussions to begin this week. Company's aim is to start production by next spring.
Malmberg and Millennium will start over, since WB owns those other scripts and execs there weren't happy that Malmberg took Conan elsewhere. The new version will be more faithful to Howard's original creation than were the Schwarzenegger films.

EPISODES FROM THE ZERO HOUR! PRESENTS VOLUME TWO - Now available!
New Pulp Publisher Back with Original Creation: A Father Michael Ryan Story

NEW JERSEY - With a fist in one hand and a rosary in the other, Episodes from the Zero Hour! is proud to announce the publication of its second volume, featuring the classic first episode, Warrior’s Heart, of Federal City’s own battling priest, Father Michael Ryan, available now on their electronic print storefront, http://www.lulu.com/zerohour

From the book jacket: Father Michael Ryan grew up on the mean streets of Federal City. He was a tough kid until the angels recruited him for the church. Then the war came and Mike Ryan found himself in the South Pacific, putting his courage and moral strength to the test as a Marine Chaplain. Now he’s home, tired, weary and ready to pick up the pieces of his life. But can he ever leave the past truly behind as he meets the challenges of a new kind of ministry? Soon enough the neighborhoods of Federal City are about to get a wake up call from God’s Ex-Marine. You can bet there’ll be a rosary in one hand and a fist in the other. This volume also includes a special guest appearance by TOUGH GUY FOR HIRE, Tommy “KNUCKLES” McNichols!

Written by renowned pulp writer Ron Fortier, this volume showcases an astounding cover and interior illustration by illustrator Dave Flora (Tales of the Revenant), along with design by Anthony Schiavino. Volume Two has received praise from established professionals in the pulp publishing world:

“Fortier brings the post-war era back to life with exuberance and two-fisted pulp style.”
said Charles Ardai, founder of Hard Case Crime.

“‘A man of peace with a warrior’s heart. I knew he was going to give me grief when he got out of the Marines. Looks like I was right.’ This line, taken from Ron Fortier’s A FATHER MICHAEL RYAN STORY sums up the character far better than any one blurb could,” said Bobby Nash, author of Evil Ways, Lance Star, and Domino Lady. “Father Michael Ryan walks a fine line. He is a contradiction, a man of God and a skilled warrior all rolled into one. The right nudge could easily force Father Michael on one side of that fine line or the other; man of peace or man of war. And in Federal City there is always someone willing to give a little nudge.”

“Once again, Ron Fortier has constructed a rich and compelling world, and he’s done it with such ease that he drives all of us other writers to jealously!” said Brian Meredith, creator of Modern Pulp and Steve Lawlis. “With A FATHER MICHAEL RYAN STORY, he has created a lead character that borders on the truly heroic, yet is down-to-earth and conflicted, by putting a man of the cloth onto the path of the warrior. I anxiously await the next thrilling chapter!”

The Pulp Rack - New additions!
After an unintended hiatus, I'm back with a story by Talbot Mundy.
Today's post is an e-text featuring an early story from Munsey's ALL-STORY, "Kitty Burns Her Fingers."

Terraforming is an element of some science fiction. SF and Fantasy writers are frequently critiqued on their abilities at worldbuilding. In this second outing of Mundy's vivacious heroine, Kitty Crothers, attempts something far more difficult: building a person. Mundy does a very nice job -- with some chuckles along the way -- of demonstrating how trying to recreate a person in one's own image (even when it's "for their own good") usually has problematic consequences.

Again, many thanks to Georges Dodds, who maintains the R.U.R.itaninan Muglug web site -- where you'll find a number of electronic texts (including the Talbot Mundy story, "The Soul of a Regiment") -- for providing this text.

Visit the following URL to read the PDF of "Kitty Burns Her Fingers."
http://pulprack.com/i/burnsfingers.pdf

I've created a page just for the Kitty Crothers stories by Talbot Mundy. I've added this to the Talbot Mundy section of the web site, and the page includes some introductory material by me and Brian Taves.

The hyperlinks to the two PDFs of Kitty stories I've already posted are on the new page, and as I add the third and fourth stories I'll include their links as well. By this means anyone interested in the Kitty stories will be able to find them all in one neat little package at this URL:   http://pulprack.com/arch/2007/08/talbot_mundyas.html

Again, I want to thank Brian and Georges Dodds for their contributions to the Mundy material on The Pulp Rack. Other than the initial Gault papers on Mundy, and my meandering essay on "The Soul of a Regiment," I hadn't added much on that author in quite a while. Pulp fans generally acknowledge Mundy's place in the pulp fictioneer pantheon, and Brian and Georges' help has greatly boosted my original hope for The Pulp Rack to provide a good online launch point for learning more about this accomplished author.

And I encourage anyone to contribute to The Pulp Rack's content. Certainly I don't know everything about anything, particularly where pulp history is concerned, and I greatly appreciate the contributions from other knowledgeable researchers and fans. Whatever success The Pulp Rack has had as a pulp reference resource is thanks to the many folks who have contributed material for its pages.

As always, thanks for your patronage.

AMERICAN SUPERNATURAL TALES - Coming in November!
by S. T. Joshi (Editor)
The ultimate collection of weird and frightening American fiction

As Stephen King will attest , the popularity of the occult in American literature has only grown since the days of Edgar Allan Poe. American Supernatural Tales celebrates the richness of this tradition with chilling contributions from some of the nation’s brightest literary lights, including Poe himself, H. P. Lovecraft, Shirley Jackson, Ray Bradbury, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and—of course— Stephen King. By turns phantasmagoric, spectral, and demonic, this is a frighteningly good addition to Penguin Classics. This anthology will include "Old Garfield's Heart" by Robert E. Howard.

Penguin Classics, 432 pages, $16

Robert E. Howard and Two-Gun Bob: Drawings by Jim & Ruth Keegan - Now available!
As with previous sketchbooks in the Wandering Star and Del Rey series (all but the Solomon Kane designed by Jim), this sketchbook features both finished illustrations and the pencil (or, in some cases it appears, ink and wash) sketches that represent various stages in their development. In addition to the illustrations for The Best of REH, they have included two splendid examples of their outstanding The Adventures of Two-Gun Bob comic strip in color, as well as a pencil version of another and a variety of character sketches.

For fans of the Two-Gun Bob strip, as well as those unfamiliar with the Keegans’ work, the art herein will be a revelation: they are not only brilliant comic-strip artists, but formidable graphic artists and designers, drawing their inspiration herein primarily from the great German master Ludwig Hohlwein, very much in the spirit of the Golden Age of Illustration.

32 pages, Full-color covers,
$10.00 plus $1.60 for domestic U.S. shipping
Outside U.S. please inquire directly with Jim Keegan at FORNOBULAX@aol.com

THE BLACK LIZARD: BIG BOOK OF PULPS - Coming November 6th!
edited by Otto Penzler
Featuring over forty-five classic stories and two novels, here are the best stories and major writers who ever appeared in celebrated pulps like BLACK MASK, DIME DETECTIVE, and DETECTIVE FICTION WEEKLY.
Vintage Crime, Softcover, 8x10, $25.00

Review by Mike Rogers
Though written strictly as cheap entertainment, pulp detective stories have found a new respectability, both as serious literature and as golden nuggets of Americana. Collected by noted mystery aficionado Otto Penzler, this Black Lizard bruiser collects the cream of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, more than 45 stories in all from Olympians like Hammett, Chandler, Gardner, Woolrich, and Cain to the long forgotten penny-a-word boys. The book is divided into three sections, which exemplify the core of most pulp stories: The Crimefighters; The Villains; and The Dames, each with its own intro (Penzler on Crimfighters, Harlan Ellison, who talks as much about himself as he does The Villains, and Laura Lippman on The Dames). Reflecting their era (the two world wars and the Depression), many of the stories share both the pessimism of the time—the good guys don't always win and the bad guys aren't always punished—and the optimism to fight the good fight. The stories are presented in two columns per page, the way they first appeared in Black Mask, Dime Detective, and other hack-fests of yesteryear and include the original art, typically a thug with an automatic threatening the PI or a slinky babe in her lingerie, spread throughout the stories. Like the texts, the art itself has become serious collector's items. Though other such collections exist, this noirasaurus will appeal to the genre's many fans. If pulps are your cup, it will runneth over with Black Lizard's gangbusters collection.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in August and beyond!
August 2007

FRIGHT by Cornell Woolrich, Cover art by Arthur Suydam
A man. A woman. A kiss in the dark. That is how it begins. But before his nightmare ends, Prescott Marshall will learn that kisses and darkness can both hide evil intent—and that the worst darkness of all may be lurking inside him.

Lost for more than half a century and never before published under Cornell Woolrich’s real name, FRIGHT is a breathtaking noir crime novel worthy of the writer who has been called "one of the giants of mystery fiction" and “the Hitchcock of the written word.”

September 2007
KILL NOW, PAY LATER by Robert Terrall, Cover art by Robert McGinnis
When Ben Gates took the job guarding the presents at a ritzy upper-class wedding, he thought it would be a simple assignment: stand around, look tough, and make sure none of the bridesmaids walk off with the jewelry.

But that was before someone slipped sleeping pills into Ben’s coffee and a bizarre robbery attempt left two people dead. Now Ben’s reputation is on the line—and if he doesn’t figure out which of three beautiful women is hiding a murderous secret, his life may be as well…

Pulp Fiction Art: Cheap Thrills & Painted Nightmares - Now Available!
The artwork found on pulp fiction magazine covers has rankled American sensibilities since before your grandparents time. Now for the first time on film, PULP FICTION ART: CHEAP THRILLS & PAINTED NIGHTMARES takes an in-depth look at these incredible yet misunderstood works of art; some of which, due to their controversial content, are rarely seen in public today. Pulp fiction art is more than simply an American art form; it is a state of mind. Politically incorrect, shocking, offensive and deliciously fun, it is unforgettable.

PULP FICTION ART: CHEAP THRILLS & PAINTED NIGHTMARES takes you behind the scenes of this forgotten art form with interviews of the artists who created these sinfully entertaining paintings and the collectors who have kept it alive. Winner of the 2006 Best Documentary award at both the Dragon*Con Film Festival and The International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival, documentary filmmaker Jamie McDonald gained exclusive access to the world's largest pulp art collection - owned by pulp art historian Robert Lesser. Whether you are a true fan of the art form or a curious newcomer, PULP FICTION ART: CHEAP THRILLS & PAINTED NIGHTMARES will leave you thinking differently about what constitutes true art.

Kultur Films released the DVD this week.  The running time is 57 minutes.
The retail price is $19.99. A short clip is available to preview.

You can order online or by phone (1-800-458-5887).
This fall it will be shown at the New Britain Museum of Art in CT as part of a retrospective on Pulp Art.
