Clark Ashton Smith: "The Black Abbot of Puthuum"- Pre-order price ends November 4th!
In February of 1935, Clark Ashton Smith submitted three stories to WEIRD TALES. Editor Farnsworth Wright accepted all but "The Black Abbot of Puthuum," until the tale was drastically cut and rewritten. When the story finally appeared in the March, 1936 issue, it was 1500 words shorter, a pivotal character was excised from the tale, and the ending was completely different. The rejected manuscript lay buried in the collection of H. P. Lovecraft's executor Robert H. Barlow, and only now, more than seventy years later, is the story published as the author originally conceived it. Complementing the text is a tipped-in illustration reproduced from the original WEIRD TALES artwork of Virgil Finlay. The artwork--long thought lost--was located in the collection of a friend of Clark Ashton Smith's and has not been seen since its first appearance.

The RAS Press was founded in 1961 by Roy A. Squires who produced beautiful booklets until 1987, when he printed his final book, his bibliography, The Private Press of Roy A. Squires. Under the guidance and expertise of Master Printer & designer Gerald Lange, Terence McVicker has revived the RAS Press in honor of that notable anniversary with its first publication in twenty years: "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" by Clark Ashton Smith. This digitally produced edition is limited to 250 numbered copies. The tipped-in reproduction of the illustration by Finlay was ink-jet printed by McVicker. The papers are Mohawk 50/10 Matte and Curtis Flannel. The cover was letter-pressed printed by Lange.

The book sells for $49.95, but pre-publication subscribers are invited to take advantage of a 20% discounted price of $39.95 (plus 8.25% sales tax for California residents).

"The Black Abbot of Puthuum" will debut at the 2007 World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Copies of the prospectus for "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" which shows the typefonts, the inking, and the quality of the printing is now ready for mailing. It is printed upon the paper that will be used for the edition. Gratis copies will be mailed to subscribers this week.

A hardcopy of the Prospectus is free to anyone who requests one.
Inquiries may be directed to Terence McVicker at
mcrarebooks@earthlink.net

This book is forty-eight pages not counting the covers. The covers are soft-cover, letterpress printed, there is a reproduction of the Virgil Finlay artwork, and the book is handsewn.  The book is roughly 4.5 x 8.5.
Pre-publication price is $39.95 including shipping. Checks are preferred and should be made out to:

THE CITY OF BAAL by Charles Beadle
Mysterious Africa...
At the turn of the 20th Century, Charles Beadle served the British Empire in the colonies of southern Africa; saw duty in the Boer War. Afterwards, he worked his way north through perilous territory as an oddjobber, trader and explorer. When his travels ended, he tapped his storytelling gifts and turned the Africa of experience into enthralling fiction, becoming a stalwart of the great adventure pulps.

Included in this collection of seven short stories and novelettes--originally published in ADVENTURE and THE FRONTIER --are strange tales of daring quests, wildlife in riot, treacherous characters, inscrutable witchdoctors, bizarre tribes, gruesome fates--all the mystery, discovery, danger . . . and dread, of unknown lands. From small-scale stories of isolated outposts under stress, to epic sagas of lost races in the depths of the jungle--from the macabre to the breathtaking--here is adventure at its best.  Also included is a detailed discussion of the historical context of Beadle’s stories, and a look at his fascinating life and career.

plus shipping

Pulp Adventurecon #7 - November 3rd, 2007!
It's shaping up to be a great show - although there always must be oneglitch, right? Our hard-drive got fried, and the list of dealers evaporated along with it.  I've reconstructed the list, accounting for about 90% of the tables.  I'll be making calls and sending emails to dealers to confirm they're places ... BUT if you reserved a table and read this, drop a line please.

Most shows on the east coast were blitzed with flyers.  We've run ads in High Adventure, Blood N' Thunder, Paper & Advertising Collector's Marketplace, and placed some banner advertisements on websites like Kevin Burton Smith's Thrilling Detective website, the number one stop for fans of hardboiled/detective thrillers.

We've only got a handful of tables left -- and this year, everyone will be set up in the main room.  Dealers will start setting up at 7am, and the doors get thrown open to the breathless public at 10am. (The siderooms may hold an exhibit of some kind, or we may screen some pulp-related films).

Pulp Adventurecon #7 will be held at:
Ramada Inn
1073 Route 206
Bordentown, NJ
Just off Exit 7 of the New Jersey Turnpike

This book is forty-eight pages not counting the covers. The covers are soft-cover, letterpress printed, there is a reproduction of the Virgil Finlay artwork, and the book is handsewn.  The book is roughly 4.5 x 8.5.

CS Moore Studio to Create New Conan the Barbarian Statue
Paradox Entertainment, Inc. and Frank Frazetta have granted The CS Moore Studio the license to create new statues based on Frazetta’s dramatic illustrations of Robert E Howard’s legendary Conan the Barbarian.

The first piece from The CS Moore Studio will be Conan the Conqueror, based on Frazetta’s cover image of the Robert E. Howard book of the same name, released by Lancer Books in 1967. Known to some as “The Berserker,” this piece is arguably the most celebrated Conan illustration ever. The cold-cast porcelain, hand-painted piece will be sculpted by Clayburn Moore, and will feature the warrior Conan astride his horse, with sword and shield extended for battle. A bronze edition is also planned.

Moore created sculptures based on Frank Frazetta’s amazing work in the late ‘90s, all of which sold through quickly and are highly sought after by collectors. This new license allows Moore to use his talents to express “Conan the Conqueror” in dramatic three-dimensional form, and to give fans of both Frazetta and Moore a signature piece for their collections.

“I have always wanted to sculpt this incredibly dynamic piece,” said Moore. “Frazetta is unquestionably one of the greatest talents of our day. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to bring ‘Conan the Conqueror’ to sculpture form.”

“We’re looking forward to The CS Moore Studio bringing Robert E. Howard's Conan to life as an incredibly stunning piece,” said Thommy Wojciechowski, Manager of Creative Affairs at Paradox Entertainment. “We know that the combination of Clay's artistic ability and Frazetta's stunning interpretation of the character will end up as nothing short of fantastic.

The CS Moore Studio is also pleased to offer a bronze edition of Conan the Barbarian, the powerful piece previously released by Moore as Frazetta’s Barbarian. This piece is limited to 50 pieces, and will be available for order on the CS Moore Studio website.  More information on the Conan the Conqueror Statue, including release date, pricing, and edition size, will be announced as it becomes available.

Harold Lamb Rides Again - Three new titles on the way from Bison Books!
Howard Andrew Jones has announced that it looks like the next three Harold Lamb books are a go through the University of Nebraska Press (Bison Books imprint).  They will collect most of the rest of Lamb's best historical fiction, tales written when Lamb's prose was polished to a high gloss IN ADDITION to being chock full of the plot twists, exotic settings, and grand action scenes from his earlier work. Specifically they will be:

Swords From the West: A volume of Lamb's Crusader stories, meaning mostly tales of Crusaders journeying not to the walls of Acre, but deep into Moslem and Mongol lands.

Swords From the East: A volume of adventure tales narrated by Moslem and Mongolian heroes.

Swords From the Sea: A volume of seafaring adventures, including bloody Viking stories, adventures of John Paul Jones amongst the Russian Navy, a short novel of the search for the North EAST passage, and other goodies.

Howard previously assembled a series of four books reprinting all of Lamb's swashbuckling Cossack stories for the University of Nebraska Press. The four books are now available and their titles are:

Wolf of the SteppesWarriors of the SteppesRiders of the SteppesSwords of the Steppes

Here's what the back cover says about Volume 1, Wolf of the Steppes:
"One of the finest adventure fiction writers of the twentieth century."-Robert Weinberg
"Lamb knew how to write straight-ahead adventure the way Michelangelo knew how to paint."-S. M. Stirling
"They are tales of wild adventure, full of swordplay, plots, treachery, startling surprises, mayhem, and massacre, laid in the most exotic setting that one can imagine and still stay in a known historical period on this planet."-L. Sprague de Camp

Book Description
Master of driving pace, exotic setting, and complex plotting, Harold Lamb was one of Robert E. Howard's favorite writers. Here at last is every pulse-pounding, action-packed story of Lamb's greatest hero, the wolf of the steppes, Khlit the Cossack. Journey now with the unsung grandfather of sword and sorcery in search of ancient tombs, gleaming treasure, and thrilling landscapes. Match wits with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, and evil cults. Rescue lovely damsels, ride with bold comrades, and hazard everything on your brains and skill and a little luck.

Wolf of the Steppes is the first of a four-volume set that collects, for the first time, the complete Cossack stories of Harold Lamb and presents them in order: every adventure of Khlit the Cossack and those of his friends, allies, and fellow Cossacks, many of which have never before appeared between book covers. Compiled and edited by the Harold Lamb scholar Howard Andrew Jones, each volume features never-before reprinted essays Lamb wrote about his stories, informative introductions by popular authors, and a wealth of rare, exciting, swashbuckling fiction.

If you have not already checked out these titles, you are missing a real treat!

Paizo Publishing - Coming in January!
NORTHWEST OF EARTH: THE COMPLETE NORTHWEST SMITH by C. L. Moore (Trade Paperback) - $12.99
75th Anniversary Edition!
From the crumbling temples of forgotten gods on Venus to the seedy pleasure halls of old Mars, Northwest Smith blazes a trail through the underbelly of the solar system in 13 action-packed stories you won’t soon forget.

Among the best-written and most emotionally complex stories of the Pulp Era, the tales of intergalactic smuggler Northwest Smith still resonate strongly 75 years after their first publication. A staple of WEIRD TALES in its Golden Age, C.L. Moore’s stories appeared alongside work by H.P. Lovecraft, Robert E. Howard, and Clark Ashton Smith, forming the backbone of the “unique magazine’s” approach to science fiction and planetary adventure.

For the first time ever, all of Northwest Smith’s adventures have been collected in a single volume, including “Quest of the Starstone,” which pairs Smith with Moore’s other famous creation, the fierce swordswoman Jirel of Joiry!
Introduction by C.J. Cherryh
220-page softcover trade paperback
Softcover,  $12.99

Paizo Publishing - Now available!
BLACK GOD'S KISS  by C. L. Moore (Trade Paperback) - $12.99
First published in the pages of WEIRD TALES in 1934, C.L. Moore’s Jirel of Joiry is the first significant female sword-and-sorcery protagonist and one of the most exciting and evocative characters the genre has ever known. Published alongside seminal works by H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, the five classic fantasy tales included in this volume easily stand the test of time and often overshadow the storytelling power and emotional impact of stories by Moore’s more famous contemporaries. A seminal work from one of fantasy’s most important authors, BLACK GOD'S KISS is an essential addition to any fantasy library.  160-page softcover trade paperback

The contents include:
Introduction by Suzy McKee Charnas
Black God's Kiss
Black God's Shadow
Jirel Meets Magic
The Dark Land
Hellsgarde
Quest of the Starstone (with Henry Kuttner)

This is the first collection of C. L. Moore's Jirel of Joiry stories published that includes every story featuring Jirel of Joiry. Previous collections have omitted "Quest of the Starstone" which appears in this edition and features Jirel of Joiry and Northwest Smith.

"Quest of the Starstone" has, to the best of my knowledge, only been reprinted three time before (Realms of Wizardry, Doubleday, 1976; Echoes of Valor II, TOR, 1989 & 1991; Quest for the Green Hills of Earth, Purple Mouth Press, 1995).

Also available is the August release:
CITY OF THE BEAST/WARRIOR OF MARS by Michael Moorcock (Trade Paperback) - $12.99
Michael Moorcock’s Eternal Champion returns as Kane of Old Mars, a brilliant American physicist whose strange experiments in matter transmission catapult him across space and time to the Red Planet. Kane’s is a Mars of the distant past, a place of romantic civilizations, fabulous many-spired

THE SHADOW -  Brief film update!
This week, Director Sam Raimi briefly updated fans on the progress of both SPIDER-MAN 4 and THE SHADOW.
While the "Shadow" rights are fully owned by Raimi, he had nothing to add to the project other then his desire to bring out a new adaptation of the 30's pulp character. Raimi said, "I don't have any news on 'The Shadow' at this time, except that the company that I have with Josh Donen, my producing partner, we've got the rights to 'The Shadow.' I love the character very much and we're trying to work on a story that'll do justice to the character."

Star Wars - TV series in the works!
Filmmaker George Lucas said Tuesday that he has "just begun work" on a live-action television series rooted in the "Star Wars" universe, which is huge news not just for fans of the science-fiction epic but also for networks looking for a piece of the Lucas magic that has grossed $4.3 billion in theaters worldwide.

There is a caveat, though: The proposed series doesn't have anyone named Luke or Anakin in it, a story path that Lucas concedes is "taking chances" as far as connecting with an audience expecting the familiar mythology.  "The Skywalkers aren't in it, and it's about minor characters," Lucas said in an interview. "It has nothing to do with Luke Skywalker or Darth Vader or any of those people. It's completely different. But it's a good idea, and it's going to be a lot of fun to do."

Lucas joked that the series would be about "the life of robots" but wouldn't let any details slip about the true premise. The "extended universe" of "Star Wars" has come to life already in Lucas-sanctioned novels, comics and games that chronicle the history of the Jedi and tell the tales of bit players in the films, such as the bounty hunters from "The Empire Strikes Back."

Lucas already has another television series percolating: Lucas Animation has been working for months on "Star Wars: The Clone Wars," a computer-animated series that he hopes will introduce a new era of visuals to weekly episodic television. Lucas plans to produce it through his own companies before shopping the finished product to networks.

That model may also be used for the live-action show, although producer Rick McCallum said Tuesday that it's too early to say. McCallum is interviewing writers for the live-action series.  Lucas is confident he can find a home for his droids and Jedi, but he also knows the projects are unorthodox enough to give network executives pause. "They are having a hard time," Lucas said. "They're saying, 'This doesn't fit into our little square boxes,' and I say, 'Well, yeah, but it's "Star Wars." And "Star Wars" doesn't fit into that box.' "

WALTER BAUMHOFER: PULP ART MASTERS by John P. Gunnison
For just a few short years, Walter Baumhofer sprang into pop culture history as the first artist to imagine Doc Savage, The Man of Bronze. Baumhofer's unofficial title of "King of the Pulps" was well earned, as most publishers were envious of those few firms that he painted covers and produced art that sold the magazines well beyond the stories themselves. Baumhofer ultimately made the move into lucrative advertising and slick markets in the mid-thirties, but he left behind pulp covers that were imitated for years.

WEIRD TALES 03/1936

Disney/Pixar "John Carter of Mars" film
Pre-production for the Disney/Pixar "John Carter of Mars" film is gathering steam. They're developing a trilogy based on the series with the first film adaptation to hit theaters sometime in 2012. More may be coming after the trilogy since this is based off an 11 volumn series.

The Pixar creative team spent Tuesday morning exploring the massive Edgar Rice Burroughs archives in the ERB, Inc. offices on Ventura Blvd.  Pixar's Jim Morris (vp), Andrew Stanton (director), Mark Andrews (script) discussed the "John Carter of Mars" film project with Burroughs representatives, Danton Burroughs, Sandra Galfas and Jim Sullos.

All six members at the meeting expressed a deep commitment to the project, acknowledging that they had been inspired by Burroughs' creations from a very early age. This is evidenced in the excitement held for the John Carter property and the plans for a film trilogy faithful to the Burroughs books. Projected release date is sometime before 2012.

Danton Burroughs presented the creative team with a wealth of resources, including art samples and books by ERB scholars such as Irwin Porges and John F. Roy. They noted that their major resource to date had been the thousands of official ERB, Inc. Webpages and Webzines.

FROM GHOULS TO GANGSTERS: THE CAREER OF ARTHUR B. REEVE
Edited by John Locke
VOLUMES 1 & 2; 7x10" perfect bound

When journalist Arthur B. Reeve (1880-1936) turned his talents to fiction, he couldn’t have foreseen the results. His "scientific detective," Craig Kennedy, took the world by storm in 1911. Kennedy was labeled "the American Sherlock Holmes" while Reeve quickly became the most popular American detective-story author. For the next quarter-century, Reeve worked tirelessly at the writing game. His stories were published in a variety of magazines, slick and pulp, then turned into bestselling books. His newspaper serials were read in homes across the country. He wrote hit movies; reported on the notorious crimes of the day; hosted a national radio program. He was friend to police chiefs and presidents. Kennedy appeared in print, on stage, in films, comic strips and, eventually, television. By the time of his death, Reeve--and his famous detective--were American institutions.

But the astonishing breadth of his career has never been fully explored--until this two-volume set, a major advance in what has previously been known about Reeve and his works.

Volume 1 collects stories from all phases of Reeve’s career. Included are tales of Craig Kennedy, and Reeve’s lesser-known detectives. The early stories that made Reeve famous are here, as well as stories written for specialized markets, and obscure works written for pulps and newspapers; all taken from their original appearances. Since Reeve’s early stories were rewritten for book publication, and his later stories were never reprinted, the stories here are freely available for the first time. Approximately 260 pages.

Volume 2 consists of nonfiction material by and about Reeve. Included is a 40-page narrative describing Reeve’s fascinating career; articles by Reeve on crime solution, detective fiction, and his career; a 75-page guide to Reeve’s work, covering his magazine and newspaper appearances, film credits, stage, radio, books, comic strips, and more; an extensive Art Gallery featuring cover reproductions, interior illustrations, cartoons, ads, and ephemera; and complete bibliography and index. Approximately 226 pages.

CHRONICLES OF CONAN VOLUME 14 - Coming in March!
Written by Roy Thomas, art by John Buscema.

Conan faces his most arduous adventure yet as he matches his wits and brawn against the very forces of nature itself -- no small task, even for a man who's done battle with wizards, otherworldly beasts, and ancient gods. But will the strength of steel really be enough against such powers?

All this plus the tenth anniversary story by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, this volume marks the end of an era -- collecting the final issues of Thomas' run on Conan the Barbarian. Featuring completely re-mastered color, this volume collects Conan the Barbarian Issues # 108-115.

160 pages, $16.95, in stores on March 19.

CONAN #48 - Coming in January!
Written by Timothy Truman, art by Tomas Giorello, colored by Richard Isanove, cover by Cary Nord.

Conan finds himself embroiled in a political struggle turned bloody between a naive young prince and a sinister sorcerer who calls upon the god of the underworld to help aid him in building an army of demonic abominations, intent on conquering not just his own kingdom, but all of Hyboria! But that's not the only danger that threatens to destroy Conan's world. Little does he know, a piece of his past still follows him, stalking the Cimmerian with the patience of the grave. All roads lead to the doomed city of Yaralet in this stunning adaptation of Robert E. Howard's lost fragment "The Hand of Nergal."

32 pages, $2.99, in stores on January 16.

HELIX: A SPECULATIVE FICTION QUARTERLY - Issue #6 is now online!
The sixth issue of HELIX SF went live at midnight 10/1 and it's reportedly the strongest issue yet.  There are powerful and disturbing stories by Jennifer Pelland ("The Last Stand of the Elephant Man") and Mike Allen ("The Button Bin"), and there is challenging poetry from David Kopaska-Merkel & Gregory Stewart ("The Gates") as well as an indescribable, but moving, poem by Mikal Trimm titled "The Envoy."  Plus, "Past Masters" column by Bud Webster, this one on Cordwainer Smith, which Bruce Gillespie was extremely helpful with.

http://www.helixsf.com is the URL, and it's free to read.  All we ask is that if you like what you read, hit the PayPal button and drop a few bucks in the busker's cup.  If you like what you read, or if you don't, feel free to e-mail us and say why.

Thanks to Bud Webster for the tip!

Robert E. Howard Foundation - THE LAST OF THE TRUNK is now available for pre-order!
THE LAST OF THE TRUNK should ship in November.
Robert E. Howard generated an enormous volume of written works, around 3.5 million words. In his tiny room in his house in Cross Plains, REH kept a trunk to hold all his output that was still awaiting a sale, as well as works that were rejected, unfinished, something he especially wanted to save, or simply copies of early drafts that he would reuse the back of in typing up another story. At the time of his death, that trunk held literally tens of thousands of pages of material, all hand-typed by REH.

In the early 1960s, Glenn Lord obtained the contents of REH's trunk. He had the duty, pleasure, and challenge of sorting it all out, and to begin sheparding those works into print. Hundreds of stories and poems poured forth, to see print in assorted books, magazines, and fan publications.

Ever since the publication of Glenn Lord's THE LAST CELT in 1976, collectors of the works of REH have been aware of, but unable to read, more than a hundred unpublished stories and fragments. A few were published in the intervening years, but not many.

Finally, in this volume,
THE LAST OF THE TRUNK is being revealed. Virtually all the remaining unpublished prose will be included. While this certainly is not his most memorable or impressive work (those works are already in print), it does fill in lots of blank spaces for the scholars and collectors, and perhaps yield a little more understanding of one of the greatest pulp writers.

This will be the largest REHF publication to date, at 672 pages. Hardback with dust jacket by Tom Foster. Edited and with an introduction by Patrice Louinet. Design by Dennis McHaney. Many of the works are incomplete or unfinished. Many of the complete stories are either boxing or high school papers.

The Shadow - New comic revival?
The latest issue of WIZARD (#193) contain a small sketch of The Shadow by Tim Sale and hints that there are rumors of a comic revival.  Sale also expressed interest in illustrating The Shadow someday.

Solomon Kane - Movie update!
James Purefoy has been cast in the lead on Samuel Hadida's upcoming comic book adaptation Solomon Kane.
Following what the producers called "an exhaustive search", they have finally found the man to play the eponymous 16th century soldier and Puritan. Kane is a damned soul following a life of cruelty and brutality, and must redeem himself by battling the forces of darkness.

Michael J Bassett will direct from his own screenplay, and principal photography is set to begin in Prague. Hadida called Purefoy "a powerful and commanding screen presence", adding: "Purefoy's ability to embody Kane's complex heroism, struggles and failings as he wages a mortal battle, made him the perfect modern hero in this epic fantasy."

Purefoy recently starred as Mark Anthony in BBC/HBO series Rome.
