AMERICAN SUPERNATURAL TALES - Available in bookstores October 2nd!
by S. T. Joshi (Editor)
The ultimate collection of weird and frightening American fiction.

As Stephen King will attest, the popularity of the occult in American literature has only grown since the days of Edgar Allan Poe. American Supernatural Tales celebrates the richness of this tradition with chilling contributions from some of the nation’s brightest literary lights, including Poe himself, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Shirley Jackson, Ray Bradbury, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and—of course— Stephen King. By turns phantasmagoric, spectral, and demonic, this is a frighteningly good addition to Penguin Classics. This anthology includes "Old Garfield's Heart" by Robert E. Howard.

Penguin Classics, 432 pages, $16

Clark Ashton Smith  - "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" Update!
In February of 1935, Clark Ashton Smith submitted three stories to WEIRD TALES. Editor Farnsworth Wright accepted all but "The Black Abbot of Puthuum," until the tale was drastically cut and rewritten. When the story finally appeared in the March, 1936 issue, it was 1500 words shorter, a pivotal character was excised from the tale, and the ending was completely different. The rejected manuscript lay buried in the collection of H. P. Lovecraft's executor Robert H. Barlow, and only now, more than seventy years later, is the story published as the author originally conceived it. Complementing the text is a tipped-in illustration reproduced from the original WEIRD TALES artwork of Virgil Finlay. The artwork--long thought lost--was located in the collection of a friend of Clark Ashton Smith's and has not been seen since its first appearance.

The RAS Press was founded in 1961 by Roy A. Squires who produced beautiful booklets until 1987, when he printed his final book, his bibliography, The Private Press of Roy A. Squires. Under the guidance and expertise of Master Printer & designer Gerald Lange, Terence McVicker has revived the RAS Press in honor of that notable anniversary with its first publication in twenty years: "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" by Clark Ashton Smith. This digitally produced edition is limited to 250 numbered copies. The tipped-in reproduction of the illustration by Finlay was ink-jet printed by McVicker. The papers are Mohawk 50/10 Matte and Curtis Flannel. The cover was letter-pressed printed by Lange.

The book sells for $49.95, but pre-publication subscribers are invited to take advantage of a 20% discounted price of $39.95 (plus 8.25% sales tax for California residents).

"The Black Abbot of Puthuum" will debut at the 2007 World Fantasy Convention in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Copies of the prospectus for "The Black Abbot of Puthuum" which shows the typefonts, the inking, and the quality of the printing is now ready for mailing. It is printed upon the paper that will be used for the edition. Gratis copies will be mailed to subscribers this week.

A hardcopy of the Prospectus is free to anyone who requests one.
Inquiries may be directed to Terence McVicker at
mcrarebooks@earthlink.net

Update:  This book is forty-eight pages not counting the covers. The covers are soft-cover, letterpress printed, there is a reproduction of the Virgil Finlay artwork, and the book is handsewn.  The book is roughly 4.5 x 8.5.
Pre-publication price is $39.95 including shipping. Checks are preferred and should be made out to:

Clive Cussler: THE CHASE - Coming November 6th!
April 1950: The rusting hulk of a steam locomotive rises from the deep waters of a Montana lake. Inside is all that remains of three men who died forty-four years before. But it is not the engine or its grisly contents that interest the people watching nearby. It is what is about to come next . . .

1906: For two years, the western states of America have been suffering an extraordinary crime spree: a string of bank robberies by a single man who cold-bloodedly murders any and all witnesses and then vanishes without a trace. Fed up by the depredations of the "Butcher Bandit," the U.S. government brings in the best man they can find-a tall, lean, no-nonsense detective named Isaac Bell, who has caught thieves and killers coast to coast.

But Bell has never had a challenge like this one. From Arizona to Colorado to the streets of San Francisco during its calamitous earthquake and fire, he pursues what is quickly becoming clear to him is the sharpest criminal mind he has ever encountered, and the woman who seems to hold the key to the bandit's identity. Using science, deduction, and intuition, Bell repeatedly draws near only to grasp at thin air, but at least he knows his pursuit is having an effect. Because his quarry is getting angry now, and has turned the chase back on him. The hunter has become the hunted. And soon it will take all of Isaac Bell's skills not merely to prevail . . . but to survive.

Filled with intricate plotting, dazzling signature set pieces, and not one but two extraordinary villains, this is the work of a master writing at the height of his powers.

CONAN THE PHENOMENON - Arriving in comic shops October 3rd!
Paul Sammon (W) and Frank Frazetta (Cover); Foreword by Michael Moorcock

This in-depth tour through the history of fantasy’s greatest hero covers everything from the earliest prose, to Frazetta’s explosive artwork, through the Schwarzenegger film, and into the recent rebirth of the character as a leading comic-book hero.

Since his first appearance in a 1932 pulp magazine, Conan the Barbarian has enjoyed every success available to a fictional character. Robert E. Howard created the genre of sword and sorcery with his original stories; Frank Frazetta’s definitive Conan book covers set the standard for dynamic fantasy artwork; Roy Thomas, with Barry Smith and later John Buscema, used the character to push the boundaries of comic-book adventure; and Arnold Schwarzenegger launched his amazing film career.  Now, with the character’s popularity renewed thanks to the award-winning comics series, all of these eras of Conan are examined under one cover in this lavishly illustrated book.

Conan historian Paul Sammon looks at all the stages of the character’s development, with commentary and archival material from the most integral players in that history. The definitive guide to everything Conan!

Indiana Jones
For more than 25 years, audiences have thrilled to the adventures of Indiana Jones. The three original films -- Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade -- garnered 14 Academy Award nominations, won 7 Oscars, and grossed more than $1.1 billion at the box office. In the cinematic event of 2008, George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, and Harrison Ford join forces again, bringing Indiana Jones back to the silver screen for his biggest adventure ever.

Del Rey Books was the publisher of the original movie novels, and this new adventure will be penned by New York Times-bestselling author James Rollins (The Judas Strain, Black Order, Map of Bones and Sandstorm). Del Rey will also be publishing The Making of Indiana Jones by Laurent Bouzereau and J. W. Rinzler, a behind-the-scenes look at the people, places, technology, and events that went into the creation of all four Indiana Jones movies, beginning with the classic Raiders of the Lost Ark and culminating with an up-close-and-personal look at the brand-new blockbuster.

The end of the world is here...  Unlocking the secret of the 'Seven Ancient Wonders' was only the beginning.
The world is in mortal danger.

For Jack West Jr and his loyal team of heroes, the challenge is to set six legendary diamonds known as 'the Pillars' in place at six ancient sites around the world before the deadline for global destruction arrives . The locations of these sites, however, can only be revealed by the fabled Six Sacred Stones.

Their quest will involve the death-defying hijack of a mountaintop railway in China... A midnight expedition to Stonehenge... A headlong chase across the deserts of Egypt... And a trek into the dark realm of an Ancient tribe forgotten by time...  With only the riddles of ancient writers to guide them, and time rapidly running out, Jack and his team must fight their way past traps , labyrinths and a host of deadly enemies - knowing that this time they cannot, will not, must not fail.  The mission is incredible. The consequence of failure is unimaginable. The ending is unthinkable.

U.S. and U.K. Release: Simon and Schuster, January 8, 2008
Australia Release: October 2007

In an interview, Reilly stated that he started writing a third book in the Seven Wonders/Six Stones series, titled THE FIVE. He hesitated to call it "a new Jack West novel", as he can’t guarantee that Jack will survive "The Six Sacred Stones"! After that, Reilly is looking to give Shane Schofield another run.  He stated that he has had a good break from Schofield, but thinks it’s time to throw him into another massive adventure.

TALES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT [MIGNOLA COVER EDITION] - Now available!
edited by Joyce Carol Oates
Combining the nineteenth-century gothic sensibility of Edgar Allan Poe with a daring internal vision, Lovecraft's tales foretold a psychically troubled century to come. Lovecraft's universe is a frightening shadow world where reality and nightmare intertwine, and redemption can come only from below. Now, at last, the most important tales of this distinctive American genius are gathered in one volume by National Book Award-winning author Joyce Carol Oates.

A collection of ten prototypical stories by Lovecraft, the influential myth-and monster-maker of Providence, Rhode Island, whose extravagantly gothic tales have spawned and inspired such latterday disciples as Stephen King and Ramsey Campbell. It's ingenuous for Ecco to claim that "Now, at last'' we have a representative Lovecraft (considering all that several publishers have done over the years to keep even his ephemera in print). Still, here are some of his best, including such comparatively little-known triumphs as a harrowing depiction of a surrender to madness ("The Dreams in the Witch-House'') and a superb haunted-house tale ("The Shunned House''). Oates's brief, incisive introduction suggestively compares Lovecraft's experiences and temperament with those of his mentor Poe, and helpfully summarizes the content of the former's apparently immortal "Chthulu Mythos.'' One misses only Lovecraft's hair-raising novella "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward.'' But even without it this attractive volume offers a fine chance to sample Lovecraft's ghoulish pleasures.

Journey back to an Age of Aces! Their familiar war cry rings out: "Let's Go!" And the greatest fighting war-birds on the Western Front are once again roaring into action - The Three Mosquitoes!

Flying in their usual close V, the three khaki colored Spads were piloted by U.S. Intelligence's finest. In the lead Spad was their impetuous young leader Kirby, while flanking him were "Shorty" Carn, the mild eyed, corpulent little Mosquito and lanky Travis, eldest and wisest of the trio. These three men were always raring for action, always recklessly anxious to go out and match their wings against any odds! Although Ralph Oppenheim had never had a flying lesson, he created one of the longest running aviation series to grace the pages of Popular Publications.

Here we present a trio of 1933 Mosquito adventures from DARE-DEVIL ACES: "The Wizard Ace," "The Cannonball Ace" & "The Midnight Ace." We have also included a bibliography of The Three Mosquitoes adventures which appeared over twelve years, through nine different magazines, and in over five dozen stories!

Clark Ashton Smith  - "The Black Abbot of Puthuum"

The book sells for $49.95, but pre-publication subscribers are invited to take advantage of a 20% discounted price of 39.95 (plus 8.25% sales tax for California residents).

CONAN THE PHENOMENON - Coming October 10th!

Robert E. Howard Foundation - THE LAST OF THE TRUNK is now available for pre-order!
THE LAST OF THE TRUNK should ship in November.
Robert E. Howard generated an enormous volume of written works, around 3.5 million words. In his tiny room in his house in Cross Plains, REH kept a trunk to hold all his output that was still awaiting a sale, as well as works that were rejected, unfinished, something he especially wanted to save, or simply copies of early drafts that he would reuse the back of in typing up another story. At the time of his death, that trunk held literally tens of thousands of pages of material, all hand-typed by REH.

In the early 1960s, Glenn Lord obtained the contents of REH's trunk. He had the duty, pleasure, and challenge of sorting it all out, and to begin sheparding those works into print. Hundreds of stories and poems poured forth, to see print in assorted books, magazines, and fan publications.

Ever since the publication of Glenn Lord's THE LAST CELT in 1976, collectors of the works of REH have been aware of, but unable to read, more than a hundred unpublished stories and fragments. A few were published in the intervening years, but not many.

Finally, in this volume,
THE LAST OF THE TRUNK is being revealed. Virtually all the remaining unpublished prose will be included. While this certainly is not his most memorable or impressive work (those works are already in print), it does fill in lots of blank spaces for the scholars and collectors, and perhaps yield a little more understanding of one of the greatest pulp writers.

This will be the largest REHF publication to date, at 672 pages. Hardback with dust jacket by Tom Foster. Edited and with an introduction by Patrice Louinet. Design by Dennis McHaney. Many of the works are incomplete or unfinished. Many of the complete stories are either boxing or high school papers.

For fans of the Two-Gun Bob strip, as well as those unfamiliar with the Keegans’ work, the art herein will be a revelation: they are not only brilliant comic-strip artists, but formidable graphic artists and designers, drawing their inspiration herein primarily from the great German master Ludwig Hohlwein, very much in the spirit of the Golden Age of Illustration.

Dark Horse will be creating new graphic stories of Kull, and has enlisted one of today's brightest talents, Andy Brase, to do covers. Comic Book Art Gallery called him "the most amazing talent to enter the comic book field in the last decade," and we don't disagree.

Sculptor Tony Cipriano used Brase's visual design of Kull as reference, and we think fans of Robert E. Howard, comics art, and sculpture will agree that his powerful and regal interpretation of King Kull makes for one of the finest mini-busts in quite some time.

THE RETURN OF THE NIGHT WIND by Varick Vanardy is now available!
Written by the “father of [serial detective] Nick Carter,” Frederic Van Rensselaer Dey, and published by the man who introduced the “pulp” magazine to the world, Frank A. Munsey, the Night Wind was a super-endowed character whose fictional life-span ran from 1913 to the early 1920s.

The only thing that kept Police Lieutenant Rodney Rushton from a date with the Night Wind's maiming and crippling fists was Bingham Harvard's determination to keep a charge of murder from ruining his prospects of marriage to Lady Kate. But now newlyweds Bing and Kate have returned from Europe determined to clear the Night Wind's name. But there still remains a price on Bingham's head -- dead or alive!
