ReelArt Studios
The ReelArt Studios website has been updated with more News and additional Gallery pictures of Buck Rogers in the Golden Age Classics Gallery, William Paquet's rendition of Pulp's The Spider and his first two pieces to see production from our Paquet's Cabinet Of Curiosities line, The Monster and The Bride. There's also the second entry up for our AC Comics' Statuesque Heroines line, the ever-delectable Yankee Girl, fresh from the pages of AC Comics as updated from the Golden Age of Comics.

Next up for release in the Frank Frazetta line will be Tony Cipriano's Sun Goddess.
That will be followed by Gabe Perna's Spiderman.
The Buck Rogers piece by Tony Cipriano will be a mid-Summer 2008 release.
Yankee Girl is now in production and there's a good opportunity for her also to see a mid-Summer 2008 release.

Expect Prince Valiant to be a mid-Summer to Fall 2008 release.
Joy and Tom Studios are starting in on Sheena, Queen Of the Jungle and are thinking of using an Irish McCalla likeness, although no artwork has been set at this time.

The first three William Paquet-sculpted pieces, The Monster, The Bride and The Spider, will all be on sale and shipping March 12, 2008 through Diamond Distributors and March 19 through Dark Horse Comics.

To see any of the above items, visit the ReelArt Studios website, slide the top scrollbar at the top right corner of the site down to the lowest position, click on ART GALLERY, and then select the item of interest.

For those of you who missed out the first time around and had wished to obtain one of our AC Comics Blue Bulleteer pieces or one of the very-quickly sold out copies of Frank Cho's Babe and Ape then here is some temporary good news. Seven pieces of The Blue Bulleteer were discovered by Dark Horse in one of their warehouses and we can offer them to you for sale now at this time. Our Babe and Ape piece was so popular that it was sold out even before it officially went on sale and so probably never really saw any shelf display of any significance. We have manufactured more of this piece and are proud to tell you that there are about 130 additional copies available for purchase by all of you who inadvertently missed the boat the first time around. We very rarely manufacture more than our original run and so consider this a treat, people. It may not happen again with any other piece. ReelArt Studios

By Cornell Woolrich
Edited and with an introduction by Gene Christie
35 uncollected works by this master of suspense!

Remembered today as a master of mystery and edge-of-the-seat thrills, Cornell Woolrich began his career by imitating F. In these early romances, Woolrich developed his literary style and the motifs that he would later use so effectively to create truly unforgettable fiction.

These stories have been “lost” and unavailable to the reading public for more than three generations. Now Black Dog Books presents The Good Die Young, a collection 35 early efforts by Woolrich that have never been reprinted or collected,

DeMatteis found himself doing just that when he collaborated with writer Len Wein on Conan #116 -- and then became the book's new regular writer with Conan #118! Dark Horse's latest Chronicles of Conan collects six issues from the regular series run, as well as the second Conan King-Size Annual. Readers will marvel at the strange new landscapes, creatures, and magical foes that DeMatteis brought to the series, while still getting a Roy Thomas fix with his "Phoenix on the Sword" adaptation from Conan Annual #2.

MASQUERADE: TEN CRIME STORIES by Max Brand, Edited by William F. Nolan

Max Brand, the pen-name of Frederick Faust (1892-1944) was a master of the fast-action tale with mythic themes - including redemption and honor - often set in a mythic landscape.  He wrote some of his classic westerns, historical adventures, sports stories and medical romances (he invented Dr. Kildare) while living in an Italian villa.  When the United States entered the Second World War, Faust became a War Correspondent, and was killed in action in 1944.

The stories in this first collection dedicated to Max Brand's crime and mystery stories embrace a wide range of protagonists - a boxer paid to take a fall, a treasure-hunting western badman, a pickpocket, a stubborn cop, a murderous husband, and a spy in the mean streets leading to World War II.

Masquerade, the 24th in the "Lost Classics" series, collects ten stories originally published between 1935 and 1938. It is edited with introduction and prefaces to each story by Max Brand's biographer, William F. Nolan.  The cover painting is by Tom Roberts.

DEEP STORM: A Novel by Lincoln Child - Arriving in bookstores February 26th!
Mass market paperback edition - $7.99
Twelve-thousand feet beneath the Atlantic Ocean... scientists are excavating the most extraordinary undersea discovery ever made. But is it the greatest archaeological find in history—or the most terrifying?

Former naval doctor Peter Crane is urgently summoned to a remote oil platform in the North Atlantic to help diagnose a bizarre medical condition spreading through the rig. But when he arrives, Crane learns that the real trouble lies far below—on “Deep Storm,” a stunningly advanced science research facility built two miles beneath the surface on the ocean floor. The top-secret structure has been designed for one purpose: to excavate a recently discovered undersea site that may hold the answers to a mystery steeped in centuries of myth and speculation.

Sworn to secrecy, Dr. Crane descends to Deep Storm. A year earlier, he is told, routine drilling uncovered the remains of mankind’s most sophisticated ancient civilization: the legendary Atlantis. But now that the site is being excavated, a series of disturbing illnesses has begun to affect the operation. Scientists and technicians are experiencing a bizarre array of symptoms—from simple fatigue to violent psychotic episodes. As Crane is indoctrinated into the strange world of Deep Storm and commences his investigation, he begins to suspect that the covert facility conceals something more complicated than a medical mystery. The discovery of Atlantis might, in fact, be a cover for something far more sinister . . . and deadly.

Like Lincoln Child’s spectacular bestsellers coauthored with Douglas Preston (The Book of the Dead, Relic), DEEP STORM melds scientific detail and gripping adventure in a superbly imagined, chillingly real journey into unknown territory. Child is a master of suspense, and
DEEP STORM is his most ambitious novel to date.

Del Rey - New Robert E. Howard title announced!
Paradox Entertainment is happy to announce that the next book in the Robert E. Howard library of classics, published by Del Rey, will bring readers to Egypt, the Middle East, and Central Asia as we follow the adventures of Francis X. Gordon ("El Borak") and Kirby O'Donnell. The book will be illustrated by renowned artist Michael Kaluta, among other things known for "The Shadow" (DC Comics), "Starstruck" (Marvel), and the 1994 J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar. Kaluta is no stranger to illustrating Robert E. Howard since he illustrated El Borak and Kirby O'Donnell in the FAX editions from the mid-1970's, as well as created concept art for the upcoming animated feature "Conan: Red Nails". Rusty Burke continues to helm the role as series editor.

Francis X. Gordon
Gordon is called "El Borak" - the Swift - by the untamed tribesmen of Central Asia and the Middle East. The nickname describes his speed with sword and revolver, the latter skill perfected in an earlier career as a Texas gunman. A freelance adventurer who occasionally hires on with the British Secret Service to foil Russia's imperialistic designs north of the Khyber Pass, Gordon sometimes rides into trouble alone, sometimes with a small band of dedicated friends. In the fearsome Land of Ghouls, he infiltrates and shatters a resurgent band of outlaws who have attempted to revive the brotherhood of the Assassins. In the corpse-choked Pass of Swords, he throws off his disguise as "Shirkuh," a killer for hire, to foil the sinister Black Tigers. When WW1 explodes, he follows the call of duty southward to fight alongside Lawrence of Arabia.

Kirby O'Donnell
Like Gordon, Kirby O'Donnell is a restless American who has found his true home on the far borders of High Tartary. Armed with the fighting-knife called the kindhjal and cloaked in the assumed identity of "Ali El Ghazi," a Kurdish soldier of fortune, O'Donnell follows a legend of vast treasure to the forgotten city of Shahrazar. He finds the fortune, then consigns it to destruction so as to prevent it from igniting a conflagration across Central Asia. But another fabulous hoard awaits, the ruby-encrusted idol known as the Blood-stained God; it is O'Donnell's for the taking, in the rugged hills beyond the Crag of Eagles - if he can survive multiple double-crosses to claim it!

At the same time work is progressing on the next volume to be published: Best of REH Horror. This book includes a wide range of stories and poems with a horror twist. Greg Staples is doing a great job illustrating this book, which is available to scare you around Halloween.

PLUS from Mike on his Kaluta Yahoo Group:

Long-time MWK fans will SEE Michael's FAX editions' art from both the Kirby O'Donnell REH stories and the Francis Xavier Gordon stories collected in this new book, along with new new art... and some Color, or so I am promised!

Note: The early El Borak material written by a very young REH (mostly when he was 16-17 years old) won't be in the Del Rey book. This material will hopefully get into print from a yet-to-be-determined publisher, hopefully at about the same time.

A reprint of the Borgo Press edition in which Nick Carr provides a comprehensive look at this Popular Publications pulp magazine, complete with character guides, plot points, and front-cover reproductions. $15 (softcover)

THE ANNOTATED GUIDE TO STARTLING STORIES
Providing fast-action science fiction novels, Startling Stories was established beginning in January 1939 as a sister publication to Thrilling Wonder Stories. Publishing 99 issues in all, and combining with Fantastic Story Magazine and Thrilling Wonder Stories with its ninety-seventh issue, it finally suspended publication in Fall 1955, one of the last of the pulps to fold. Leon L. Gammell, an avid reader and collector of that period, views that era's stories with both nostalgia and objectivity; his incisive critiques will provide interested readers with numerous guideposts to a wealth of exciting fantasy and science-fiction reading. $15 (softcover) or $30 (hardbound)

DOUBLE TROUBLE: A BIBLIOGRAPHIC CHRONICLE OF ACE MYSTERY DOUBLES
It was the 1950s in postwar America, and paperback books were the hot new product in the publishing industry. Of course, to stand out from the crowd and sell, one needed a gimmick. Into this newly exuberant market came a publishing house named Ace Books, with the seductive promise of two books for the price of one. It also had the eye-catching premise of two separate covers, joined at the spine like Siamese twins. Finished with one book? Flip the paperback over and begin again with a new novel, complete with its own package. It was something completely different—and it sold! The late Sheldon Jaffery’s Double Trouble tours the short yet popular era of the “Ace Mystery Doubles,” and includes both author-title and title indexes for easy reference in this reprint of the Borgo Press edition. $30 (softcover) or $50 (hardbound)

THE FLYING SPY: A HISTORY OF G-8 by Nick Carr
One of the most popular pulp magazines of the 1930s was G-8 and His Battle Aces, which featured the anonymous American flying ace and spy, G-8, battling the German military machine during World War I and after. Nick Carr provides a comprehensive look at this extraordinary, 110-issue pulp, complete with character guides, plot points, and front-cover reproductions.  164 pages, Hardcover - $35   Softcover $20

FUTURE AND FANTASTIC WORLDS: A BIBLIOGRAPHIC RETROSPECTIVE OF DAW BOOKS (1972-1987)
A reprint of Sheldon Jaffery’s look at the early years of DAW books, featuring over 700 annotations of every DAW book published through mid-1987, with indexes by author, artist, and title, providing a massive guide to modern SF writers and their works, with much background data. Interspersed throughout the book are numerous wry, irreverent, and amusing observations offered by the late and highly respected researcher in this extremely valuable genre tool.
$20 (softcover) or $35 (hardbound)

JOHN SILENCE, PHYSICIAN EXTRAORDINARY
—Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was an English writer of tales of the supernatural. The character of John Silence pioneered the “psychic detective” genre. This volume contains five stories of John Silence and his investigations into the paranormal. $20 (softcover) or $35 (hardbound)

THE SHUDDER PULPS by Robert Kenneth Jones
This classic study of the weird-menace pulp genre is back in print in this no-frills softcover edition of the FAX book. The shudder pulps published some of the grisliest, goriest, most outrageous mystery-terror fiction ever sold on the American newsstand, during the golden age of the pulp magazines. This volumes chronicles the authors, artists, and publishers of those classic thrill-fests. 256 pages, $17.95 (softcover)

ISBN: 978-0-345-49020-9 (0-345-49020-7)

Random House/Del Rey

UPDATE from Horror Stories editor Rusty Burke: “Want to nip a potential problem in the bud. Don’t know why the Random House site has complete horror stories listed, because from day one my title for the book has been The Mad Immensities of Night: Selected Horror Stories and Verse by Robert E Howard. The book probably includes at least three-quarters of REH’s horror fiction, but does not include *everything* and I would not want someone to buy it thinking it does. As it stands, we have just over 500 pages of REH content alone, so it’s a big book, like the Best Ofs. I’ve written to my editor at Del Rey to see about getting the title on the webpage (which was probably just a “filler”) corrected.”

Thanks to Rusty Burke and The Cimmerian for the update!

ZORRO #1 - Arriving in comic shops February 20th!
by Matt Wagner & Francesco Francavilla
Dynamite presents the return of yet another Legend as Matt Wagner unveils the all-new Zorro! Writer, Art Director and cover artist Matt Wagner is in command of this all-new “year one” Zorro comic series. Similar in tone and scope to Dynamite’s acclaimed Lone Ranger series, Zorro  features artist Francesco Francavilla who complements Wagner’s pulp-action writing! Created in 1919 by pulp writer Johnston McCulley, Zorro made his first appearance in "The Curse of Capistrano," serialized in the pulp magazine All-Story Weekly. From there Zorro has been the star of countless films and has been noted by Bob Kane as a main influence on Batman — Bruce Wayne even went to see The Mark of Zorro the evening his parents were killed! — and recently featured in a best-selling novel by Isabel Allende! Joining Wagner — who also provides covers for the series (50%) — and Francavilla for the return of the legendary Zorro are cover artists Mike Mayhew and Dean White (25%)  and Lone Ranger cover artist John Cassaday (25%)!

All along the Western Front the Germans curse them "Verdamnt Der Rot Falker!" They were Barry Rand, Yank ace and his giant Senagalese aide, Sika. Altus Press: TRIPLE DETECTIVE - Now available!
TRIPLE DETECTIVE - Three novels in ONE magazine!
Phantom Detective - Norman Daniels’ “The Happiest Hour Murders” with restored text.
The Black Bat - Stewart Sterling’s “The Lady of Death” with restored text.
The Secret Agent “X” in “The Stolen Formula” -  first American publication in English.

One of the most popular titles of its day, TRIPLE DETECTIVE early on carried some terrific stories. The magazine was so popular that it lasted long after most titles had folded, continuing until the Fall 1955 issue. Some interesting stories ended up in the later issues after the other titles ceased, and it’s likely that a number of lost hero pulp stories ended up here as well. Unfortunately, many of the later issues contained reprints of earlier published stories.

With the release of the new series, three important stories are included in the first issue for the pulp fan. Norman Daniels’ “The Happiest Hour Murders” was written as a Phantom Detective entry in 1934, but rejected, and published later with all reference to the Phantom deleted removed from the story. When the Black Bat folded in 1953, Stewart Sterling’s “The Lady of Death” was left unpublished, and appeared later, with all traces of the Black Bat removed. These two stories have been restored to their original characters and published here for the first time. The Secret Agent “X” story, “The Stolen Formula” was originally written and published in Greece in 1950, and this is its first American publication in English.

TRIPLE DETECTIVE is being published in the pulp format of old, and for the pulp collector, and fan of the character pulps, this will quickly become a collector’s item in itself. Basically, these are three “lost” stories from the heyday of the character pulps.

Baen Books: The Spider: Robot Titans of Gotham - Coming in April!
Mass market paperback edition!
Two complete novels in one volume of the adventures of the mysterious masked crime fighter known as The Spider, hunted by the underworld and the police alike. In one, the Spider battles an army of giant robots that has New York City under siege—a storyline so fraught with action and peril, that the very creators of Superman had borrowed it for one of the Man of Steel's comic strip adventures. It also was the inspiration for the major motion picture, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. In the second novel, the spider battles a criminal mastermind who threatens the entire northeast with thousands of poison-fanged vampire bats unless his terms are met. Can even the Spider—hunted by the law as never before after faked evidence has branded him as the master of the killer bats—unmask the identity of the Vampire King before thousands die horribly?

Plus a special bonus third novel—The Octopus, another pulp character created by Norvell W. Page, but this time a diabolical villain, bent on seizing control of the nation unless the only man who knows of the danger can stop him. But can a mere man stop a mastermind whose very appearance, from which comes his name, is anything but human?

Black Death Books - Coming in 2008!
THE CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (SCORPION #2) by Warren Stockholm
Imagine a world where the Allies lost the war to Nazi Germany and America has spent sixty years under duress by Axis powers. Now imagine an America newly freed from oppression and trying to find its way—through crime and punishment. Welcome to the new America.

Post-War profits have helped Steeltown grow into a thriving industrial metropolis. Unfortunately, the criminal element is growing along with it. Never before has evil of such a depraved and monstrous nature terrorized the rainwashed streets of the city. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and now only the darkest and bloodiest of messiahs can prevent every man, woman and child from becoming hapless victims. Out of the shadows comes The Scorpion.

Kurt Reinhardt is a powerful and debonair newspaper publisher by day—but by night he becomes a crime-busting vigilante feared by the criminal underground and relentlessly pursued by the police. He is neither entirely good nor is he evil—and as The Scorpion his agenda is his own. To fight the criminal element he utilizes the awesome .50 caliber Sting, a garrote of piano wire, and secrets best left buried forever in the past. Aiding him in his ruthless quest for “death for death and blood for blood” are hard-boiled Police Captain Dick Barracks, Spike Malone, a cynical young hooligan out of the river district known as “Shit Town”, and Suzaku, his loyal Japanese retainer. At night in Steeltown the shadows are alive and The Scorpion crawls…

THE CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD
What began as an innocent carnival turned into a bloodbath overnight as the city of Steeltown was infiltrated by a deadly new viral plague whose origins were unknown. The city quickly broke down and civilized men turned into raging animals as they began to fight their way through an ever-increasing army of the walking, flesh-eating dead. Kurt thought he could help those desperate to survive, he thought he could hold back the forces eating through his beloved city, but a chance encounter with one of the infected left him with a body full of plague and a clock ticking down to zero hour. And now the Scorpion’s only hope is to ally himself with the very men who would hunt him down and kill him…

BOYS OF STEEL by Marc Tyler Nobleman - Coming in August!
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s Siegel and Shuster!
Celebrate Superman’s 70th anniversary with this fascinating true story of how he came to be!

Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, two teenagers in Depression-era Cleveland, were more like Clark Kent than his secret identity. Meek, mild, and myopic, they spent their high school years escaping into fictional worlds of adventure and derring-do with heroes like Flash Gordon and Tarzan. They also made up their own stories—Jerry wrote, Joe illustrated. Then, late on summer night, Jerry had the idea for a hero who was everything they were not . . . and unlike any the world had ever known.

Boys of Steel is the first-ever picture book about how these two unsung heroes created the first and greatest superhero of all time. Marc Tyler Nobleman’s text captures the excitement of Joe and Jerry’s creative triumph as boys and their fight for recognition as men, while Ross MacDonald’s buoyant illustrations bring back to life the thrilling days—and thrill-seeking boys—of yesteryear. Up, up, and away!

Hippocampus Press - Latest newsletter update!
It's been quite a while since our last newsletter, but we've been working hard to get caught up with our release schedule, and prepare new titles for the future. At our website we have added volume titles and descriptions for the first two volumes of THE COMPLETE POETRY AND TRANSLATIONS OF CLARK ASHTON SMITH. These are VOLUME 1: THE ABYSS TRIUMPHANT and VOLUME 2: THE WINE OF SUMMER. The books themselves will be shipping by early March.

The Lovecraft-Derleth letters will be available in early April. The manuscript is nearly complete, and cover art is under preparation by noted artist David C. Verba. The title of this two-volume set will be ESSENTIAL SOLITUDE: THE LETTERS OF H. P. LOVECRAFT AND AUGUST DERLETH. Look for a blurb at the website very soon.

Those who order Donald Sidney-Fryer's poetry omnibus THE ATLANTIS FRAGMENTS in advance will be honored by having their name printed in a special appendix in the book itself. This goes for orders placed through Donald's own private mailing as well as through the Hippocampus website. This deluxe edition, the design of which is becoming steadily more elaborate as time goes on, now includes maps, a color plate and illustrated end papers, as well as the usual Smythe-sewn signatures, illustrated dust wrapper and shrink wrapping of each volume.

The CD edition of all five volumes of the Lovecraft COLLECTED ESSAYS series is finally winding up a very rigorous beta-testing stage, performed by the disc's designer David E. Schultz with the valuable assistance of Donovan K. Loucks of The H. P. Lovecraft Archive, an online resource at http://www.hplovecraft.com.

We also have any number of paperback offerings in the works. The Donald Wandrei poetry collection, SANCTITY AND SIN is finally ready for the printer, and copies purchased directly from Hippocampus Press or from independent booksellers will come with a bonus CD containing Phillip A. Ellis's amazing concordance to the poems.

We hope to have out by summer Kenneth W. Faig, Jr. and Sean Donnelly's collection of work by noted Lovecraft associate Edith Miniter, DEAD HOUSES & OTHER WORKS, and another volume in the Lovecraft's Library series, COLD HARBOUR by Francis Brett Young paired with SINISTER HOUSE by Leland Hall, again in the distinctive "Ace Double" format.

The collection of Ramsey Campbell obscurities, INCONSEQUENTIAL TALES, and a collection from the important new writer Jonathan Thomas entitled MIDNIGHT CALL are also expected in the coming months.

Thank you for your interest in Hippocampus Press!
Sincerely,
Derrick Hussey

AMAZON STORIES: Volume 1: PEDRO & LOURENÇO by Arthur O. Friel
Adventure on the Danger Trails of the Amazon Jungle

Arthur O. Friel debuted in ADVENTURE in 1919. With his engrossing tales of the unexplored Amazon jungle, he quickly became one of the pulp’s most popular authors, a position he held for many years. Here, reprinted for the first time, are Friel’s first ten stories for
ADVENTURE. They follow the experiences of two rubber industry workers, Pedro and Lourenço. Their journeys into the jungle, one of the wildest and most inhospitable places on Earth, lead to fantastic, suspenseful--and often violent--adventures, and encounters with bizarre and fascinating people. These stories are some of Friel’s most entertaining work, and some of the best fiction to be found in the adventure pulps.

Also included is an in-depth discussion of Arthur O. Friel, an enigmatic real-life explorer, and the roots of his Amazon stories.

Robert Weinberg - To be awarded a Lifetime Achievement award!
The Horror Writers Association will award two Lifetime Achievement Awards at this year’s World Horror Convention and Bram Stoker Awards Banquet.

Writer/director/producer/composer John Carpenter exploded onto the horror scene with his 1978 classic “Halloween,” a film that held the title of most successful independent release for two decades. His other notable films include “The Thing,” “The Fog,” “Escape from New York,” “In the Mouth of Madness” and “Vampires,” as well as many others. Carpenter has come to be known as one of the most influential horror filmmakers of all time. He is currently in production on his newest project, called “The Prince.”

Eleven years before Carpenter’s “Halloween” was released, Robert Weinberg sold his first short story. He was a junior in college at the time, and hasn’t stopped writing since. A founding member of HWA, Weinberg is a two-time winner of World Fantasy Award and a renowned expert in many genres, having edited over 100 books in the fields of horror, fantasy, science fiction, young adult, western and mystery. Weinberg also has worked as a writing instructor and served as HWA vice president for two terms.

HWA President Deborah LeBlanc said, “We are proud to honor these two men with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Bob Weinberg’s contribution to the genre goes much deeper than his obvious body of published work, as he has always been a reliable, invaluable resource to HWA, and ever-willing to offer advice to our young writers.

“John Carpenter revolutionized the horror film,” LeBlanc continued. “The influence of ‘Halloween’ surpasses the boundaries of film, touching literature, comics, non-fiction, and nearly every other aspect of the horror genre. The creation of Michael Myers and his iconic theme music alone would be enough to earn him this award. The fact he has been a consistent and innovative force in the genre is just icing on the cake.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award is the most prestigious of the Bram Stoker Awards, given by the HWA in acknowledgment of superior achievement not just in a single work but over an entire career. Past Lifetime Achievement Award winners include such noted authors as Stephen King, Anne Rice, Joyce Carole Oates, Ray Bradbury, and Peter Straub. Winners must have exhibited a profound, positive impact on the fields of horror and dark fantasy, and be at least sixty years of age or have been published for a minimum of thirty-five years. Last year’s winner was author Thomas Harris.

The HWA Annual Conference and 29th presentation of the Bram Stoker Awards will be held on March 29 in conjunction with the 2008 World Horror Convention. The convention runs from March 27-30 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The Horror Writers Association is a worldwide organization promoting dark literature and its creators. Started in 1985, it has over 500 members who are writing professionally in fiction, nonfiction, videogames, films, comics, and other media.

Taschen: Men's Adventure Magazines - Special budget abridged edition!
Battling dangerous beasts such as ferocious lions, venomous snakes, or swarms of man-eating weasels, the hunky heroes of men's adventure magazines were frequently depicted struggling to protect themselves and especially their buxom female companions from the gruesome tragic ends that threatened their every waking moment. Whether stranded on desert islands, clashing with motorcycle gangs, or shackled in prison camps, the magazines' male and female protagonists were perpetually fighting their ways out of dangerous predicaments.

To pay homage to the American periodicals of the 1950s, '60s, and '70s that "documented" such outrageous exploits, TASCHEN brings you this hefty, comprehensive guide packed full of colorful cover art, sumptuous sample spreads, and enlightening essays. With an in-depth introductory essay describing the history, culture, and artistry of men's adventure—a.k.a. "sweat"—magazines, as well as chapter-by-chapter exploration of various subjects including the role of women and the portrayal of Nazis and Communists, this definitive study of the genre examines not only the popular appeal of the magazines but also their social and political implications. Also included are publisher listings and profiles of artists and writers, as well as an interview with Norm Eastman, one of the genre`s most important artists.

2008 Windy City Pulp and Paperback Convention - April 25-27, 2008
75th Anniversary and the Hero Pulp Explosion
Announced guests for our 2008 Convention - Ron Goulart and Will Murray!
2008 marks the 75th anniversary of Doc Savage and, in connection with that, we’re planning a number of special displays and events centered on Doc and his amazing gang of five. Guests of honor will be the two living Kenneth Robesons, both of who are also noted pulp historians – Doc Savage author Will Murray and Avenger author Ron Goulart!

HOTEL: For our eighth show, we’ll be in the West suburbs of Chicago. The Westin is a new hotel, which opened in August 2007.  It’s located about 20 minutes SW of O’Hare Airport and about a half hour West of Midway Airport.  Room rates are $99/night (to get the con rate, you must book by 5:00 p.m. on April 3, 2008!).  Parking is free.  The hotel is in the midst of a shopping and restaurant corridor – it’s adjacent to (within walking distance of) Yorktown Mall and about a mile from Oak Brook Shopping Center.  For those with families, it’s also only 7 miles from the Brookfield Zoo, one of the nation’s top zoos.  And if you like to gamble, it’s 10 miles from the Aurora River Boat.

THE WESTIN LOMBARD YORKTOWN CENTER
70 Yorktown Center
Lombard, IL 60148
Hotel Phone # (888) 627-9031
Please mention the con when booking rooms!

Please note that the hotel’s toll free # has changed from earlier fliers.
The hotel has now set up a website specifically for the convention. It’s:
http://www.starwoodmeeting.com/StarGroupsWeb/res?id=0801146730&key=DFA00

Attendees can go to the website and it will automatically put you in the con block, at the con rate.

GETTING THERE FROM THE AIRPORT:  If you’re flying in, you have two choices – cab or Airport Express (a small shuttle bus service).  The hotel does not have any arrangements with cab companies, but a few companies apparently offer a flat rate from O’Hare; you need to call in advance and request a suburban taxi, NOT a city taxi.  We’ve been told these are:

    303 Taxi:  O’Hare to Lombard $28 -- phone 847-368-8916
    Citi Suburban: O’Hare to Lombard $30  -- phone 630-495-5555
    AAA Universal Taxi:  phone 630-617-5400
    AM Regional Taxi: phone 630-971-8888
    American Taxi: phone 630-305-0700

Airport Express’ phone is  888-2thevan (or 888-284-3826).  You need to make reservations in advance.

For Airport Express to/from O’hare (guest may be paired up with other riders), ticket counters and loading zones are located at 1E, 2D, and 3F on the baggage claim level. The last shuttle leaves O’hare at 11:30 p.m seven days a week. Shuttles depart O’hare every 15 minutes.  Rate is:

1 person - $33.00; 2 people - $38.00; 3 people - $43.00; 4 people - $48.00; 5 people - $53.00; 6 people - $58.00

For Airport Express to/from Midway (guest may be paired up with other riders), shuttle pick up and ticket counter is located at door 3 across from baggage claim. Reservations to suburbs are needed. Shuttle is available 7 days a week with the last one leaving at 10:30 p.m.  Rate is:

1 person - $37.00; 2 people - $42.00; 3 people - $47.00; 4 people - $52.00; 5 people - $57.00; 6 people - $62.00

MEMBERSHIPS:  Memberships are $35 for all three days, $25 for Friday only, $25 for Saturday only, and $15 for Sunday only.  We are also offering Early Bird Admission for non-dealers for $60, which is a three day membership which allows entry to the dealer room on Friday at 10 a.m. (which is one hour after dealer setup begins and two hours before the con generally opens to the public).  Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account pulpvault@msn.com).

DEALER INFO: Dealer setup begins Friday at 9 a.m. – the dealer room is open to the public from noon - 6 p.m. Friday (10 a.m. to 6 p.m. for Early Bid Admission), 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Sunday.  For dealers, tables are 6’ long.  Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs.  Wall tables are $90 and island tables are $80.  The dealer room will have around 116 tables.  Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a regular 3 day membership ($35).

PROGRAM BOOK:  All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints – we’re actively looking for more articles, particularly on Doc Savage!.  To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $70 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $40 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $25 (3.25" x 2").  The deadline for submitting and paying for ads is March 1, 2008.  Please contact Tom Roberts at tom.roberts2@insightbb.com for ad and other program book matters (other than payment).

ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art.  For the fourth year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (www.illustration-magazine.com).  If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us – we’re particularly looking for Doc Savage and other pulp hero art.  The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons.
AUCTION: The auction will kick off Saturday at 8 pm.  If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com.
PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. More info, including
the schedule, will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored
by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (www.geocities.com/poppub/).

WEBSITE: The con’s website is www.windycitypulpandpaper.com. We’ll be posting updates to it periodically up until
the time of the con, so please check it for the most recent information. And while you’re there, make sure to sign up and
join the forums, which allows you to post pulp news of interest to the site, whether related to the con or otherwise.

CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop
by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby.

REGISTRATION: Click here or visit the Windy City Convention website to download the registration form.

THE BLOOD 'N' THUNDER GUIDE TO COLLECTING PULPS - Now available!
Hot off the presses -- literally! We have just received our shipment of the long-awaited BLOOD 'N' THUNDER GUIDE TO COLLECTING PULPS, a book we hope will become an indispensable reference work for anybody with even the slightest interest in pulp magazines. This isn't a price guide; it's a novel-length (74,000 words) study of the field geared toward the specific requirements of collectors. In chapters covering the major pulp genres -- general adventure, mystery/detective, western, hero, science fiction/fantasy, weird menace, etc. -- we enumerate the major titles, make our case for their significance, and highlight specific issues, authors, and stories worth collecting.

This 232-page trade paperback, printed in the standard pulp format of seven by ten inches with two columns of text per page, also includes two Appendixes, one listing BnT’s picks for the most noteworthy books about pulps and the other offering a list of the titles and issues that would comprise a well-rounded pulp collection. The text is accompanied by more than 400 scans of pulp covers, many of which have never been reproduced.

The book’s price is $19.95 plus $5.00 for shipping and handling. I accept Paypal, checks, and money orders. For further information, contact me at bnteditor@yahoo.com or just send payment to: Ed Hulse, 2467 Route 10 East, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.

Please note:
THE BLOOD 'N' THUNDER GUIDE TO COLLECTING PULPS
will be available exclusively from Ed Hulse for the forseeable future.

Recommended for pulp collectors and readers. I just finished reading my copy this week and I heartily recommend this book.
It is an enjoyable and entertaining read. I learned about several pulp series characters that I was previously unaware of and whose adventures I would now like to read.  Pick up a copy of this book. You will be glad that you did!

Conan feature film - Update!
Conan the Barbarian has cleared one more hurdle in his long-awaited return to the big screen. Nu Image/Millennium Films, the production company behind the new movie, has inked an interim agreement with the Writers Guild of America that allows the Lionsgate-based Conan to move forward.

IGN confirmed with sources close to the project that scribes Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer are now free to begin writing the screenplay for Conan even as the writers strike continues.

With active development now re-started, the filmmakers are determined to begin production on Conan this fall. No director has been hired yet.

And according to The Hollywood Reporter, the interim agreement between Nu Image/Millennium and the WGA also allows their Al Pacino-Robert De Niro crime drama Righteous Kill to re-shoot some scenes.

Frank Hamilton - Pulp artist passed away January 28th
Dave Walker has previously passed along the information that Frank Hamilton went into a nursing home back in November. Earlier this week, Dave passed along the sad news that Frank passed away on January 28th.

THE GLOUCESTER DAILY TIMES has published an obituary which is reproduced below.
There is an online Guestbook that you can sign to let the family know how much you have enjoyed Frank's art.
The Guestbook will be online for 30 days.

The family of Franklyn E. Hamilton are saddened by the passing of their father after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, Jan. 28, 2008.  Franklyn was born in Gloucester on June 10, 1918, the son of Frank and Esther (Wilkie) Hamilton.
He went through the Gloucester school system where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Dolores Natario. They shared 62 years of marriage until she passed in 2002.

He was employed by the City of Gloucester where he worked as the sign painter for 37 years before retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed reading, drawing and painting. He was a self taught artist. In his younger years, he was proud to have been a two time fencing champion.

He was famous in the pulp world for his recreations of classic Shadow & Doc Savage covers to which there were many. He also created numerous original works. In 1982 he was awarded the Lamont Award for his "point istic" style. In 1996 he co-authored a book with Link Hullar titled "Amazing Pulp Heroes: A Celebration of the Glorious Pulp Magazines."
He is survived by his children, Franklyn B., husband of Lois A. (Whitmarsh), Bonnie J. Sweet, wife of the late Elwood (Ellie) Sweet and Brian K. Hamilton, all of Gloucester; his grandchildren, Shawn B. Sweet of Amesbury, husband of Florence E. (Pool), Heather J. Sweet, fiancee of Sean Porper of Gloucester and Craig M. Hamilton of Gloucester. He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Paula (Hamilton) Dennis. He also leaves behind five great-grandchildren, Robert P. Sweet of Boston, Michael R. Dennis of Wyndmoor, Pa., Max C. Hamilton of Essex, Ryan T. Cusick of Gloucester and Caitlin E. Hamilton of Essex; a dear friend, Link Hullar of Texas; and his cherished cat, Cheyenne.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in February and beyond!
February 2008
MONEY SHOT by Christa Faust, Cover art by Glen Orbik
It all began with the phone call asking former porn star Angel Dare to do one more movie. Before she knew it, she’d been shot and left for dead in the trunk of a car. But Angel is a survivor. And that means she’ll get to the bottom of what’s been done to her even if she has to leave a trail of bodies along the way...
First publication anywhere!  First female author in the history of Hard Case Crime

March 2008
ZERO COOL by John Lange, Cover art by Gregory Manchess
American radiologist Peter Ross just wanted a vacation. But when he meets the beautiful Angela Locke on a Spanish beach, he soon finds himself caught in a murderous crossfire between rival gangs seeking a precious artifact.

From Barcelona to the rain-swept streets of Paris, from the towers of the Alhambra to its darkest catacombs, Peter Ross is an ordinary man in desperate circumstances: racing to uncover a secret lost for centuries, before he becomes its next victim.

April 2008
SHOOTING STAR/SPIDERWEB by Robert Bloch, Cover art by Arthur Suydam, Larry Schwinger
TWO COMPLETE NOVELS, PUBLISHED IN THE CLASSIC BACK-TO-BACK "DOUBLE" FORMAT!
SHOOTING STAR: A famous movie star found dead on the set of his latest picture...drugs hastily disposed of at the scene of the crime...it’s the stuff of Tinseltown scandal and could ruin the investment Harry Bannock made in the dead man’s library of films. For help, Bannock turns to Mark Clayburn, a one-eyed private eye with his own history of scandals. But can Clayburn uncover the truth about Dick Ryan’s murder before time runs out for Ryan’s co-stars... and for Clayburn himself?

SPIDERWEB: Eddie Haines came to Hollywood to work in television, not to become a phony self-help guru, collecting secrets from his wealthy clients in order to blackmail them. But that’s what Eddie has become, under the tutelage of Professor Otto Hermann, Ph.D., a vicious little man with dollar signs where his soul should be. It’s a lucrative set-up for both of them—until the day the professor pushes Eddie too far...

James Reasoner - Home lost in fire this week!
Longtime Western writer and WWA member James Reasoner and wife Livia lost their house and studio, and all their belongings, in a fire earlier this week. They're OK, as are their dogs and children, but got out with only their clothes they were wearing. Books, pulps, comics, everything else, gone. "This is totally overwhelming," James says.

To help the family, Western Writers of America and Kensington Books have agreed to make sizable contributions and ask anyone who would also like to contribute to send cash donations .

SPACE VULTURE by Gary K. Wolf and Archbishop John J. Myers
Coming in March 2008!
Gary K. Wolf, Creator, Roger Rabbit
Roger Rabbit Creator and Archbishop of Newark
Team Up To Write Science Fiction Novel

In what might be the oddest literary pairing of all time, Gary K. Wolf, noted science fiction author and screenwriter, best known for creating the Roger Rabbit characters and Toontown, and John J. Myers, Catholic Archbishop of Newark, have teamed up to co-write an action/adventure science fiction novel entitled "Space Vulture."  The book is an homage to "Space Hawk," the first science fiction novel the two read as schoolboys.  "Space Vulture" recently sold to Tom Doherty Associates for publication by their Tor imprint in March 2008.

In the fast paced story, heroic Intergalactic Marshal Victor Corsaire and cowardly con man Jack Edward join forces with a beautiful and courageous widow and her two young sons to battle Space Vulture, the most villainous marauder in the cosmos.

Wolf and Myers have been close friends since childhood.  They grew up together in the small farm town of Earlville, Illinois.  Wolf's father ran the pool hall there.  Myers' father was the town milk man.

"We were in the seventh grade," recalls Wolf.  "We were both big readers, and we both liked science.  John came to me with a book he'd discovered.  He told me I had to read it because it was science AND it was fiction.  It was science fiction.  That book was Anthony Gilmore's pulp classic 'Space Hawk.' I read it and loved it just as much as John had.  We were hooked.  After that, we sought out and read all the science fiction books we could find.  I can honestly say that 'Space Hawk' changed my life.  Without 'Space Hawk' there would be no Roger Rabbit."

"For as far back as I can remember," adds Archbishop Myers, "reading has been one of my favorite pastimes.  I still read voraciously. 'Space Hawk' made as much of an impression on me in my early years as it did on Gary.  We can both still quote passages from that book verbatim.  Nowadays my reading is mainly theology although I do make time for fiction and even science fiction which I still greatly enjoy."

"One day, almost as a joke" says Wolf, "I told John we ought to collaborate on a science fiction novel of our own, an homage to 'Space Hawk,' doing a story as appealing to science fiction readers of today as 'Space Hawk' was to us.  To my great joy, John said, 'Let's do it.'"

The two wrote the novel over a five year period collaborating by phone, e-mail, and face-to-face during Wolf's frequent visits to Newark from his Boston home. "We had great fun writing 'Space Vulture' and it shows," says Wolf.  "It's just as adventuresome and exciting as 'Space Hawk.'"

"Collaborating with Gary on 'Space Vulture' has been satisfying for me on several levels," says Archbishop Myers.  "It has given me the opportunity to create an exciting, interesting, and morally principled tale in one of my favorite genres.  It has also provided the opportunity to renew and deepen one of my oldest and dearest friendships."

Archbishop Myers has published extensively in the scholarly and religious press. This is his first work of fiction.  Wolf has published five previous novels including 'Who Censored Roger Rabbit' which formed the basis for the Spielberg/Disney blockbuster movie 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit.'

Agent Mickey Freiberg of The Acme Literary Agency brokered the six figure deal with Tom Doherty Associates editor Moshe Feder. More information on the book and the authors can be found at www.spacevulture.com.
