Age of Aces Books
Now available!

In the mid-30s, before Sheridan Doome became a staple in the pages of The Shadow magazine, two Doome hardcover mysteries were written by acclaimed hard-boiled author Steve Fisher (I Wake Up Screaming, Captain Babyface) and edited by his wife Edythe Seims (Dare-Devil Aces, G-8 and His Battle Aces).
Age of Aces now brings you both books in one huge double novel, presented in a retro "flip book" style.

As chief detective for U.S. Naval Intelligence, Lieutenant Commander Sheridan Doome's job was a grim one. Whenever an extraordinary mystery or crime occurred in the fleet, on a naval base, or anywhere the navy worked to protect American interests, Doome was immediately dispatched to investigate it. Fear and dread would always precede Doome’s arrival in his special black airplane. For, in an explosion during WWI, he had been monstrously disfigured. Much of his skin had been burned away, leaving his head and face an expressionless bone-white lump of scar tissue. But behind the ugliness was a brilliant mind. Once on the case, Sheridan Doome always got his man.

All Age of Aces books are $16.99 trade paperbacks and are available from
Amazon, Adventure House, or Mike Chomko Books.
Copies will be available at Pulpcon.

Black Dog Books - Coming in October!
Black Dog Books has announced the first two volumes in a new series that will reprint the early works of Talbot Mundy, legendary author of classic adventure novels and military tales recounting the glory days of the British Empire.

The first volume, "A Transaction in Diamonds: Talbot Mundy in the Pulps, 1911," will collect all of the stories and articles published by Mundy during his first year as a professional writer, with a new introduction by Brian Taves, author of "Talbot Mundy—Philosopher of Adventure. "

The second, "The Soul of a Regiment: Talbot Mundy in Adventure, 1912," contains the bulk of his sales during that year to the Adventure pulp magazine, his primary outlet during this period. It will include a new introduction by prolific and popular writer S. M. Stirling, author of "The Peshawar Lancers."

Both will be available in October 2008, with further volumes appearing on a regular basis.
Later volumes will include introductions by Peter Berresford Ellis, author of "The Last Adventurer: the Life of Talbot Mundy," and Doug Ellis, author of "Uncovered."

“The Talbot Mundy Library will bring back into print virtually all of the stories and articles from approximately the first ten years of Mundy’s career,” notes Black Dog Books publisher Tom Roberts. “Most of the these works have been out of print for decades, and many have never been reprinted since their first appearance in the magazines nearly a hundred years ago.” (Roberts is also the author of "Alex Raymond: His Life and Art" (Adventure House, 2008), the first detailed biography of the creator of Flash Gordon and other classic comic strips.)

Pulp historian Gene Christie will serve as the series editor. In addition to appearances in American pulp magazines, Christie says, the library will include rare works from British publications, the Saturday Evening Post, the New York Times and other sources.

Black Dog has scheduled the following eight volumes in the Talbot Mundy Library for 2008-2009, including collections of two limited series—the Billy Blain boxing stories (1912-16), and the adventures of Dick Anthony of Arran as he battles the forces of the Russian Czar (1914-15). Neither of the series has been previously collected.

Vol. 1 — A Transaction in Diamonds: Talbot Mundy in the Pulps, 1911
Vol. 2 — The Soul of a Regiment: Talbot Mundy in Adventure, 1912
Vol. 3 — In a Righteous Cause: Talbot Mundy in Adventure, 1913
Vol. 4 — The Letter of His Orders: Three Short Novels from Adventure, 1913
Vol. 5 — Love and War: The Battles of Billy Blain

THE GANGLAND SAGAS OF BIG NOSE SERRANO
Volume 1: DAMES, DICE AND THE DEVIL
By Anatole Feldman
Introduction by Will Murray

Featuring the first four Big Nose Serrano novels from Gangster Stories, 1930-31. Serrano started off as a gangland version of Cyrano de Bergerac, a guy with a large nose who supplies romantic poetry to a better- looking friend. Complete history, and an episode guide to beat all episode guides (it even lists all the music cues for each episode!). A sample of one such episode, "The Hitch-Hiker," can be found on Bear Manor Media's web-site and gives a superb idea of what the book will be like. 800 pages thick, if the sample on that site doesn't speak enough, you'll need a crash course watching the episodes again.

Age of Aces Books - Coming soon!
SHERIDAN DOOME FLIP BOOK
A fully authorized reprint of two Steve Fisher novels from the thirties - "Murder of the Admiral" and "Murder of the Pigboat Skipper." As chief detective for U.S. Fear and dread would always precede Doome's arrival. For in an explosion during the first World War, he had been monstrously disfigured. Much of his skin had been burned away, leaving his head and face an expressionless bone-white lump of scar tissue. But behind the ugliness was a brilliant mind. Sheridan Doome always got his man. Before Doome became a staple in the pages of The Shadow magazine, two Doome hardcover mysteries were written in the mid-thirties by acclaimed hard-boiled author Steve Fisher. Age of Aces now brings you both books in one huge double novel, presented in the old flipbook style.

Sam Slater, cobra-eyed merchant of warrior-flesh; Mog, the gorilla with human blood on his dagger-like teeth—and Raa, white queen of the ape legions . . . these were Ki-Gor's enemies in a battle that only the voodoo  of Fate could decide!

Blood ‘n’ Thunder - Now available!
Blood ‘n’ Thunder #20 (Spring 2008) features another mix of articles covering adventure, mystery and melodrama in various media. In the cover story, BnT editor Ed Hulse offers an account of the lengthy process involved in compiling Adventure’s highly touted 25th-anniversary issue of November 1935. It’s a rare behind-the-scenes look at how a great pulp magazine was put together. From a 1930 issue of Writer’s Digest comes “Writers A-Wing,” an informative, comprehensive survey of the pre-Depression market in aviation pulps, written by genre stalwart Arch Whitehouse. Old-Time Radio researcher and author Martin Grams Jr. returns to the pages of BnT with the first half of a lengthy, richly detailed article on the Sam Spade radio show—which, as Martin reveals, dramatized some of Dashiell Hammett’s Continental Op stories, replacing the Op character with Spade! Another installment of “Cliffhanger Classics” finds Ed Hulse examining the brief careers of Pathe’s last serial team, Hugh Allan and Gladys McConnell, whose starring vehicles included The Tiger’s Shadow (1928) and The Fire Detective (1929). This article is illustrated with rare photos from the late Ms. McConnell’s personal collection.

Single copies of Blood ‘n’ Thunder #20 are $6.00 plus $1.50 for postage. One-year (four-issue) subscriptions are available for $25. Payments should be made out and mailed to: Ed Hulse, 2467 Route 10 East, Bldg. 15, Apt. 4B, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.

Special Note: Ed still has limited quantities (literally a handful) of each of the following long out-of-issues: numbers 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. These are priced at $10 each.  Ed will be selling these, as well as the latest issues and The Blood ‘n’ Thunder Guide to Collecting Pulps, at the upcoming Pulpcon.

Blood ‘n’ Thunder #21 (Summer 2008) is already being assembled
and, hopefully, will also be available at Pulpcon.

Conan the Cimmerian #1 - Arriving in comic shops July 16th!
As hard as it's been for Conan to return to Cimmeria, things aren't getting any easier as he nears his goal, and he quickly runs afoul of raiders on the Cimmerian borderlands. One stranger welcomes Conan home with a crack to the head, and another begins to weave a tale about Conan's grandfather--another Cimmerian who was filled with wanderlust. Conan the Cimmerian continues Dark Horse Comics' modern revitalization of Robert E. Howard's most beloved character. This is a great jumping-on point for new readers-and our first look at the creative muscle that will fuel Conan's adventures throughout 2008!

* Legendary storyteller Joe Kubert contributes a rare variant cover for our first issue!

* The star-studded team of Timothy Truman, Tomás Giorello, José Villarubia, Richard Corben, and Frank Cho launch Conan into a whole new era!

Publication Date: July 16, 2008

CONAN THE CIMMERIAN #4 - Coming in October!
Timothy Truman (W), Tomás Giorello (P), Richard Corben (P), José Villarrubia (C), and Frank Cho (Cover)

Conan finds himself at odds with Horsa—an Aesir leader last seen in “The Frost Giant’s Daughter”—when he tries to protect his former Cimmerian lover, Caollan, from Horsa’s strange war party. Conan faces off against some strong Aesir soldiers, as well as the colorful-yet-foolhardy berserker Thorgeir and the powerful witch Olva. Being caught in the middle of a blood feud between Cimmerian and Aesir chiefs is bad enough, but things get much worse when Olva summons the demonic Skrae to hunt down Conan and his secretive ward. Richard Corben’s flashback sequences—featuring Conan’s grandfather, Connacht—take a surprising turn when they dovetail into the present for an exciting cliffhanger!

Publication Date: October 15, 2008
Format: Full color, 32 pages
Price: $2.99

Del Rey - Robert E. Howard news!
Rusty Burke has announced that the next volume in the Robert E. Howard collection after this October's THE HORROR STORIES OF ROBERT E. HOWARD will feature the following tales of El Borak, Kirby O'onnell, and Steve Clarney:
El Borak
Swords of the Hills
(REH's title for the story later published as "The Lost Valley of Iskander")
The Daughter of Erlik Khan
Blood of the Gods
Sons of the Hawk
(REH's title for the story later published as "The Country of the Knife")
Son of the White Wolf

Hawk of the Hills
Three-Bladed Doom:  Both versions ("long" and "short")
The short version has never before appeared as REH wrote it. It originally
appeared in REH:Lone Star Fictioneer, but was rewritten (for no apparent
reason, and without notice) by Byron Roark (as reported by Damon Sasser in REH:Two Gun Raconteur). Damon published the REH portions that had been rewritten by Roark, but not the whole story, so this will be the first appearance of the story in its entirety as written (or rewritten -- the "long" version came first, and about a year later REH rewrote it as the "short" version) by REH.

Kirby O'Donnell
Gold from Tartary
(published as "The Treasures of Tartary")
Swords of Sharazar
The Trail of the Blood

Steve Clarney
The Fire of Asshurbanipal
Stained God

Michael William Kaluta's original illustrations from the FAX editions of  "The Lost Valley of Iskander" and  "The Swords of Shahrazar" were originally announced to be included in this volume, possibly along with new illustrations by Kaluta. However, Kaluta has since announced that no deal has been reached with Del Rey, so the artist for this title is presently unknown.

Thanks to Rusty Burke for the information!

Wildside Press - July titles!
ADVENTURE TALES is devoted to the pulp magazines of the early 20th century and reprints fiction and artwork representing the best of the era. Each issue focuses on a different author or theme. #5 is at the printer and will be available shortly. (Official publication date: 7/15/08.)

ADVENTURE TALES #5 showcases the work of Achmed Abdullah, with two long stories: "The Remittance Woman" and "Their Own Dear Land." Also featured: "The Pearls of Paruki," by J. Allan Dunn, and "The Midwatch Tragedy," by Vincent Starrett.

This issue has a landmark format change. With #5, ADVENTURE TALES shifts to traditional pulp magazine format -- 7" x 10" -- and expands to 128 pages. This allows us to recreate the "look and feel" of the classic pulp magazines...everything but the cheap paper. (Sorry, we're using archival-quality acid-free book paper.) We are certain pulp fans will approve of all the changes.

First, after a museum curator is murdered, The Shadow must solve the timeless riddle of "The Blue Sphinx," a 4000-year-old relic unearthed in the Libyan desert. Then, South American headhunters team with New York gangsters to spread terror through "Jibaro Death." This classic reprint also features both color pulp covers by George Rozen, classic interior illustrations by the legendary Tom Lovell and historical commentary by Will Murray. Dynamite Entertainment - Dynamite to publish The Phantom and Buck Rogers!
Dynamite has acquired the rights to produce The Phantom comics – with Alex Ross attached to do covers and new character design. Created by Lee Falk in the mid ‘30s, “The Ghost Who Walks” has been in virtually continuous publication since 1936, either as a comic strip of comic book. Most recently, Moonstone held the license for the character. Dynamite’s treatment of The Phantom will be a reboot, similar to what the publisher has done with The Lone Ranger and Zorro.

Dynamite will also publish a Buck Rogers comic starting in 2009.
Note: Moonstone Books is also still licensed to publish The Phantom!

INCONSEQUENTIAL TALES
By Ramsey Campbell
Illustrated by Jason C. Eckhardt
September 2008: ISBN 978-0-9793806-6-2: $15.00
Ramsey Campbell is the most distinguished and highly acclaimed writer of horror and supernatural fiction of our time. In more than a score of novels and hundreds of stories, Campbell has demonstrated mastery in every facet of the weird tale. This volume gathers tales, written over a period of more than thirty years, that have not yet been included in any of Campbell's dozen or more short story collections. Among them are such dark jewels of the supernatural as "The Reshaping of Rossiter," an early version of the celebrated tale "The Scar"; "Broacast," which invests terror in a microphone; "Writer's Curse," in which horror writing itself is made a subject of terror; "Murders," a bizarre mix of horror and science fiction; "Snakes and Ladders," a powerfully cosmic vignette that served as an early version of "Playing the Game." Also included are two previously unpublished tales, "The Precognitive Trip" and "Pet." Campbell's distinctive vision, fecund imagination, and meticulous prose shine through every sentence, making the slightest of these tales a literary treasure.

MIDNIGHT CALL AND OTHER STORIES
By Jonathan Thomas
Foreword by S. T. Joshi
August 2008: ISBN 0979380693: $15.00
An artist is summoned to paint the portrait of sinister Mr. Finster in a decaying mansion . . . A suburban couple is vexed by the inveterate lawn-mowing of a ghost . . . In ice-bound Vermont, one farmer's crop is suspiciously bountiful . . . A miniature nymph is found swimming in an office water cooler . . . These are the bizarre conceptions of Jonathan Thomas, a powerful new writer of weird, horrific, and supernatural fiction who introduces himself to the reading public with this rich and varied short story collection. Thomas is, however, a practiced hand at terror-weaving, and his work spans the spectrum from comic fantasy to psychological suspense to science fiction. Unifying all his tales is a prose style of singular fluency and grace, enlivened by keen observation and mordant satire.

Off-Trail Publications - Now available!
SUPER-DETECTIVE FLIP BOOK: TWO COMPLETE NOVELS
From the SUPER-DETECTIVE pulp:
"Legion of Robots" (November 1940), Intro by John McMahan
"Murder’s Migrants" (March 1943), Intro by John Wooley
6x9-inch perfect bound; 174 pages, $18.00

In the late-1930s, Culture Publications added a new imprint, Trojan Publications, and gave comic-book fansa reason to stay with the pulps. The reason was Super-Detective, introduced in 1940, a pulp featuring the novel-length adventures of Jim Anthony, detective extraordinaire. But Anthony was no mere sleuth. He possessed phenomenal physical and mental abilities. Patterned after Doc Savage, he battled super-villains bent on the destruction of the United States.

After ten amazing adventures, Super-Detective transformed the Jim Anthony novels to a hard-boiled detective-story mode. The criminals were less ambitious, and more susceptible to guns and fists.

Here, in this SUPER-DETECTIVE FLIP BOOK, a joint presentation of Off-Trail Publications and Reverse Karma Press, are two Jim Anthony novels, one from each phase of Anthony’s career. Flip the book and read the second novel. Also included are two introductions that explore the dual worlds of Jim Anthony, and the authors who brought him to life.

GANG PULP
Introduction by John Locke
6x9-inch perfect bound; 294 pages, $24.00

In 1929, a new kind of magazine appeared on newsstands, the gang pulps! And nothing that came before gave the pulps a worse reputation. Month after month, the stories luridly recounted the exploits of the most sadistic killers, the most craven squealers, the most coldblooded gun molls, the most corrupt cops, the most ruthless gang bosses, the most brutal mob wars, that ever escaped the realm of the imagination--a genre of extremes.

There had been outlaw heroes in crime fiction before, but none like this new breed, who toasted with bootleg liquor while their bloody victims lay dying on the floor. Almost immediately, the gang pulps came under attack from the censors. America’s morals lay dying on the pulpwood pages, they claimed.

Centered in the crosshairs was famed pulp editorHarold Hersey, creator of Gangster Stories, Racketeer Stories, Speakeasy Stories, and a raft of other gang magazines. He was threatened with prosecution. Clean up--or else!

But the story of this clash has never before been told; nor have many of the stories been available since their original publication during the dying years of Prohibition. Included in GANG PULP are nineteen rare tales, selected from both the pre- and post-censorship periods. Did Hersey buckle under? Judge for yourself in violent and profane pulp classics like "One Hour Before Dawn," "Rough on Rats," and "City of Bullets."

In "Glorifying the American Goon," an in-depth introduction based on all-new research, the world of the gang pulps is explored: what the stories were about, what happened during the attack on Hersey, how he responded, how the stories changed.

Stories complete with original illustrations.

Planetary Stories - #11 is now available!
The new issues of Planetary Stories (# 11) and Pulp Spirit (#2) are now available online at www.planetarystories.com.
Planetary Stories features a long story, "Crimson Lightning" by Kenneth Pembroke and "Lovers Under the Green Sky," the Planetary Stories debut of Ken Kraus. This issue also debuts a new fan feature, "We Salute," honoring pioneer fan Jack Speer, who, sadly, passed away just before it went on line. The cover is by Jerry Burge. And -- on, yes -- don't miss "The Vibrating Ether," our letter column. This is the best instalment yet.

In Pulp Spirit (featuring a cover by Jeff Fraker), you'll find another detective yarn featuring the Diamondville Dolls, "The Paste Ruby" by Fran Douglas. You'll also find the short but memorable horror story, "Door Closing" by Wendy Webb. This issue's "PulpRack" column deals with World War I stories.  Planetary Stories and Pulp Spirit -- Where the Universe Comes for Adventure.
