The Three Mosquitoes: "The Magic Inferno"
This is the second collection of stories featuring
The Three Mosquitoes by Ralph Oppenheim.

Once more, their familiar battle cry rings out: ”Let’s Go!”
And the three khaki Spads take to the air, flying intoterror skies each sporting the famous Mosquito insignia. In the cockpits sat the three warriors who were known wherever men flew as the greatest and most hell raising trio of aces ever to blaze their way through overwhelming odds. Always in front was Kirby, their impetuous young leader. Flanking him on either side were mild-eyed and corpulent Shorty Carn, and lanky Travis, the eldest and wisest Mosquito.

From the pages of Popular Publications’ air war pulp magazines, author Ralph Oppenheim—who had never been in an airplane—brings us four more unforgettable adventures of this reckless and inseparable trio from 1932 and 1933: The Magic Inferno, The TNT Patrol, The Suicide Patrol, and The Flying Stingaree.

Along these forthcoming releases, and the Lovecraft-Howard letters set already announced, we have issued a second printing of THE PLACE CALLED DAGON with remarkable new cover art by Allen Koszowski, complementing his interior illustrations. Other titles in preparation include DEAD RECKONINGS #4; a volume of original poetry by Charles Lovecraft and Phillip A. Ellis, and WEIRD WORDS: A Lovecraftian Lexicon compiled by Daniel Clore. More on these titles later.
Classics and Contemporaries: Some Notes on Horror Fiction by S. T. Joshi
November 2008: ISBN 978-0-9814888-3-7: $20.00

S. T. Joshi has established himself as a leading critic and scholar of the weird tale. Having begun by studying the work of H. P. Lovecraft, Joshi has expanded his interests to include the entire range of horror fiction from such classics as Lord Dunsany and Algernon Blackwood to such contemporaries as Ramsey Campbell, Stephen King, and Clive Barker. In this generous sampling of the reviews that Joshi has written in nearly thirty years as a critic, we find trenchant analyses of writers ranging from Arthur Machen, E. F. Benson, and Shirley Jackson to Peter Straub, Thomas Ligotti, Norman Partridge, and David J. Schow. Joshi also addresses such significant themes in horror fiction as the subgenre of dark suspense, the haunted house, Arkham House and its legacy, and the work of the small press. Of particular note is a lengthy section devoted to H. P. Lovecraft, including studies of an array of Cthulhu Mythos writings and detailed examinations of recent Lovecraft scholarship. Joshi’s essays and reviews are enlivened with a pungent wit and literary flair that bring to mind the work of John Clute and Brian Aldiss.

The Unknown Lovecraft by Kenneth W. Faig, Jr.
December 2008: ISBN 978-0-9814888-7-5: $20.00

Kenneth W. Faig, Jr. is well known to Lovecraftians as one of the pioneers, along with Dirk Mosig, Richard L. Tierney and others, of modern Lovecraftian scholarship. The author of Some Lovecraft Places in Providence (1971), H. P. Lovecraft: His Life, His Work (1979), Lovecraft's Ancestors (1988), The Parents of Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1990) and other works, Faig has also disseminated his research as a perennial contributor to journals and amateur press associations, and through his own Moshassuck Press. This long overdue collection gathers all of Faig's best pieces on HPL.

The Lady Who Came to Stay by R. E Spencer  &  The Elixir of Life by Arthur Ransome
February 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-9-9: $15.00

Once again, our Lovecraft's Library series reprints two obscure horror novels favored by H. P. Lovecraft for their "darkly excellent effects." Reprinted for the first time, in an attractive format reminiscent of the Ace doubles of an earlier era, both novels feature authoritative texts derived from original sources, along with informative introductions by S. T. Joshi. Visit our website for a special offer on Hippocampus Doubles: six novels for $40.00.

Blood Will Have Its Season by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., author of Nightmare's Disciple
Introduction by S. T. Joshi
Illustrated by S. Thomas Brown and Stanley C. Sargent
March 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-8-2: $15.00

"In an earlier day I feel sure Joe Pulver would have been arrested for writing some of the stuff in this collection. Maybe he will be yet! In any case, I cannot shake the feeling that his stories are all well described by analogy to "The Colour out of Space" in that the descent of some elder, outer entity acts as seed producing, from the dark mulch of Joe's subconscious, a luxurious growth of beautiful and at the same time poisonous blooms. One knows one ought to flee but cannot resist hanging around to savor the corruption! And how can he write, with such intricate delicacy, thunderous prose that fairly rips up the pages it is printed on? I wish I knew!” --Robert M. Price

The Tindalos Cycle
Edited by Robert M. Price
Illustrated by Robert H, Knox
April 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-5-1: $20.00

When Frank Belknap Long first alerted the world to the those infamous other-dimensional entities, The Hounds of Tindalos, he mined a rich vein of macabre antecedents, whose devisers included Robert W. Chambers, Ambrose Bierce and others. Since Belknap's time, others have distilled and fortified his prophetic vision, affording the Hounds ongoing ingress to our dimension as a mainstay of the Mythos. Now, the steady hand of editor Robert M. Price gathers all the relevant Tindalos writings in one mind-blasting tome, tracing the Hounds' lineage from the dawn of the weird tale through their first explicit revelation, to the modern day with its full flowering. In 2009, prepare for... The Tindalos Cycle.

The Hound Hunters by Adam Niswander
April 2009: ISBN 978-0-9814888-4-4: $20.00

Now, a modern master of the Mythos reveals the Hounds of Tindalos in their own novel, set in the modern day! The Hound Hunters tells the tale of a designer drug whose potent admixture is capable of opening the door to another dimension, admitting those horrific Hounds. The novel, published here for the first time, is the latest in Adam Niswander's Shaman Cycle. Each novel stands alone; however, in the best Lovecraftian tradition all are loosely connected.

Out of Tragedy, a Hero Is Reborn…
In the roaring heart of the crucible, steel is made. In the raging flame of personal tragedy, men are sometimes forged into something more than human.  Wealthy and successful at an early age, Richard Benson was preparing to enjoy a long and happy life with his family when crime took away his wife and young daughter.

Once he was just a man, but now he is a machine of vengeance dedicated to the extermination of all crime. A figure of ice and steel, but more pitiless than both, Benson has become a symbol to crooks and killers--a terrible, almost impersonal force, masking cold genius and a nearly supernatural power behind a face as white and still as a dead man’s mask. Only pale eyes, like ice in a polar dawn, hint at what awaits criminals when they invoke the rage of millionaire adventurer Richard Benson -- The Avenger!

Now, for the first time in over 30 years, the fearless/expressionless crime fighter; the man with the moldable face, the man with the shock white hair and the pale grey eyes, is back in action in a stunning collection of stories featuring all the action, adventure, and revenge Avenger fans have come to expect! From noir adventure and two-fisted action, to emotional tales of inner demons, join The Avenger for an E-ticket thrill ride!

Planetary Stories and Pulp Spirit - Holiday Issue now available!
Here at Planetary Stories and Pulp Spirit, we like to think that Oct. 31 opens the holliday season. At the very least it marks the point each year when we publically admit we're in a festive mood. And to make it official, we're putting online a combined issue of Planetary Stories and Pulp Spirit to kick things off. This is in addition to our regular issue, due out New Year's Eve.

In it you'll find Ron Butler's "A Visit from St. Rex," which marks the beginning of what we hope is a long association between Planetary Stories and Ron's beloved "Rory Rammer" space adventure series. On the Pulp Spirit side, everybody's favorite thirties private eyes, Cathy and Nora Casey -- aka the Diamondville Dolls -- go undercover in a department store during the Christmas Season as "Santa's Little Helpers." (Jack Manning gets to play Santa.) Wait until you see the great illustrations Mark Fults has done for this one.

There's a scary Thanksgiving story by ShelVy, a Halloween yarn by newcomer Richard Logan, a couple of poems -- one for Halloween and one for Christmas. And PulpRack takes a timely look at Christmas stories in the pulps.

Plus there's great holiday artwork and illustration by such modern masters as Ron Wilber, Roy Coker, Jim Garrison, Kevin Duncan, Mark Fults -- and another newcomer, the artist Paulette Perlman.

It's a jam packed issue you can find at www.planetarystories.com, Just click on the Holiday 2008 Issue on the index page. And if you should check back around Thanksgiving and then again at Christmas, you might just find that we've added some more material.

Pulp Adventurecon - Saturday, November 1, 2008!
Since November 2000, Pulp Adventurecon has been the only show on the east coast devoted specifically to pulp fiction magazines, and their paperback descendants.  For the first time, we’re attempting two great shows this year – March 29th and November 1st, 2008.  Our first spring show was a success, with plenty of happy customers who entered the Ramada and remained with us for most of the day.  As collector/dealer Rick Hall said, “There was BUZZ in the room.”

People were buzzing over the latest selection of pulp reprint editions at Mike Chomko’s table; some were buzzing over the John Gunnison’s captivating Adventure House wall display.  John brought several issues of Black Mask, the legendary pulp magazine that cultivated the careers of Raymond Chandler, Earl Stanley Gardner, and many others.  If John had brought copies with Dashiell Hammett stories, right now I’d be in serious financial trouble.  Rich Greene displayed an intriguing selection of original artwork, including Boris Vallejos’ painting for The Red Terrors, a Doc Savage paperback thriller.  Dan Roberts brought several boxes of $1 paperbacks.  I scoured through them and purchased some detective-hardboiled gems from the 1950s and 1960s.  CJ Henderson chatted up several fans regarding his stories in new anthologies featuring The Domino Lady, The Spider, and The Avenger.  His novel “To Battle Beyond” unites the unlikely trio of The Black Bat, The Domino Lady, and Inspector Lagrasse against the Cthulhu menace.

Our next show will be NOVEMBER 1, 2008 at the Ramada Inn, 1083 Route 206, Bordentown, NJ.  Past attendees can attest to the convenience of this location –immediately off the New Jersey Turnpike, Exit 7, when you take the Route 206 north ramp, heading toward Trenton.  The Ramada is less than 500 feet from the ramp.  We’ll have the usual 50 tables with something for everyone … the only thing missing is YOU … Collectors and dealers come from as far away as Virginia and New Hampshire.  If you love the old pulp fiction, and live within a few hours of the Trenton, New Jersey area, there is simply no reason not to attend.

New this week:

"Traitor Truce" by Robert Burtt from the Feb. 1934 Flying Aces featuring "Battling" Grogan.
Gone were the hours of battle-mad conflict, when the roaring flames from shell-torn Chapei reached their hungry tongues high into the sky. Gone the anxious moments on the Dragon tarmac when Jap bombs rained from the sky as thick as hailstones. A truce had been declared. No longer was the Dragon squadron allowed to fight. And then, before the very eyes of Battling Grogan and his men, a fleet of swift Jap Kawanishis opened their guns on a lone Chinese ship, and Battling Grogan gave the forbidden signal—“Attack.”

THE AVENGER Volume 1: "Justice, Inc." & "The Yellow Horde"
The Pulp Era's most intriguing superhero returns in his first two epic adventures by Paul Ernst writing as "Kenneth Robeson." Scott's classic pulp covers, and reprints all the original interior illustrations by Paul Orban. Pulp historian Will Murray provides commentary, revealing how The Shadow's Walter Gibson and Doc Savage's Lester Dent helped develop The Avenger, a character who also appeared in Street & Smith and DC comics. Gibson (writing as "Maxwell Grant"). First, not even The Shadow's bullets can stop his most formidable foe, "The Gray Ghost," a seemingly supernatural adversary. Then, Lamont Cranston and Margo Lane hunt Nazi treasure and a blonde temptress as they attempt to unmask "The White Skulls," skeletal-garbed terrorists who leave behind a deadly wake of destruction. BONUS: The Shadow battles killer ants in "The Red Room," a terrifying script from the Golden Age of Radio. This classic reprint also features both color pulp covers by George Rozen and Modest Stein, classic interior illustrations by Tom Lovell and Everett Raymond Kinstler (who also provides a foreword recalling his early days as a comic book artist and pulp illustrator) and historical commentary by Will Murray and Anthony Tollin.

Conan Art at Heritage Auctions
Fourteen previously unseen Conan the Barbarian paintings are highlighting Heritage’s Signature Comic and Comic Art Auction on November 13-15, 2008. These paintings of the legendary warrior Barbarian King were created by world famous fantasy artist Sanjulian. Sanjulian made several memorable covers for Conan reprints in the 1970s and ‘80s, but this art was made specifically for a Conan calendar. This allowed him to get more in depth with the character, bringing more focus and detail to the art.

Flesk Publications: Jules Verne's Twenty-Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
Adapted and Illustrated by Gary Gianni - Coming in December!
Flesk Publications is proud to present a graphic novelization of Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by the celebrated illustrator and writer of books, comics, and comic strips, Gary Gianni. The Verne novel, which has been adapted into films and illustrated in numerous forms, receives an exciting fresh visual approach allowing the reader to experience the story anew. A life-long fan of Verne’s novel, Gianni proves the perfect foil for this visually stunning recreation, penned by the “Father of Science Fiction.” Gianni’s adaptation wholly preserves the sense of wondrous adventure, while sacrificing nothing by way of plot or the finer nuances of character. This finely distilled narrative combines skillfully rendered depictions of the men and the machines they command. Their encounters with astounding marvels and terrible monsters, above and below the waves, create a rich and rewarding reading experience unlike any other. This oversized, hardbound volume will also include the full text of “The Sea Raiders,” a short story by H.G. Wells, accompanied by ten original illustrations created for this edition by Gianni. - Coming in early 2009!

Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon: A Lifelong Vision of the Heroic, collects all the major works of the artist featuring the character. At 256 pages, it encompasses Williamson’s three stints of depicting Flash in comic book format: the legendary King Comics stories from the 1960s, the 1980 adaptation of the Universal Flash Gordon motion picture, and the Marvel Comics miniseries of 1994.

In addition to these classics of sequential storytelling, Al Williamson’s Flash Gordon features Williamson’s Flash drawings done for commercial illustration and prints, his assists on the Flash Gordon comic strip, a variety of Flash images contributed to amateur publications, and a selection of largely unpublished images spanning his interest in the character from childhood to the conclusion of his career. With an introduction by Sergio Aragones, text by Mark Schultz, and images reproduced directly from the artist’s original drawings, this long-overdue collection of evocative artwork documents the lifelong impact that Flash Gordon had on Williamson and the particular impact that Williamson had on Flash Gordon.

THE HORROR STORIES OF ROBERT E. HOWARD
Now available in some book stores!
Arriving in other bookstores
October 28th!
Arriving in comic shops October 29th!
by Robert E. Howard; with illustrations by Greg Staples
During his incredibly prolific career, Robert E. Howard went beyond the world of fantasy to write a variety of genres - and The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard is the first-ever collection containing his best tales of terror, all restored to their earliest, most definitive versions.

Rusty Burke posted the contents and the following information on the book:
The book is illustrated with 36 story headings and 14 full-page illustrations by Greg Staples, of which two fine examples are posted on the REHupa website.  I edited, with a huge assist from Rob Roehm (The Hardest Working Man in Howard Fandom), who did all the scanning and initial cleaning to produce usable e-texts, and who noted a number of textual problems during the process; I also relied on the invaluable advice of Paul Herman and Patrice Louinet.  Jim & Ruth Keegan art directed, and it is no exaggeration to say that without them, the book might not have come together.  We owe them an immense debt of gratitude. And, as always, Stuart Williams did a superb job with the typography, despite being saddled with an editor who crowds deadlines. And I have to mention what a fine group of professionals we have the pleasure to work with at Del Rey.  One thing we all learned is just how much we miss the involvement of Marcelo Anciano, the guiding spirit of this series. Sofcover, 6x9, 400 pages, $18.00  Del Rey

Visit the REHupa website for two examples of

Greg Staples interior illustrations for the book!

Explorer John Kenton returns from a lifetime of wanderings and the wreckage of World War I to discover a mysterious block of Babylonian basalt containing a crystal model of an ancient ship—the Ship of Ishtar!

The sultry magic of the fabled ship draws Kenton into its dreamworld, where a strange crew plucked from the ages sails in a lushly imagined mystical seascape. At the fore of the ship is Sharane, beautiful, proud, luxurious priestess instilled with the power of Ishtar, goddess of Love, Wrath, and Vengeance. Will he claim Sharane and take command the Ship of Ishtar, or will its mysterious power take command of him?

Science fiction legend Abraham Merrit was a giant of the early 20th century, inspiring the lush language and mystical subjects of authors like H.P. Lovecraft, C.L.

The Shadow Salesman book - Rare Shadow collectible!
The Scoop website posted information on this rare Shadow collectible!
In 1939 The Shadow Salesman book was made for Street & Smith Salesman to sell the Shadow’s radio show to stations throughout the country. A few years later, in the early 1940s, it was given to Arthur Emerson, by Walter Gibson. Emerson had stayed with Gibson several times during the summers of his teenage years. The pair was very interested in magic and magicians, and ended each summer with Gibson giving Arthur a gift in his suitcase. One summer, it was the Shadow Sales book.

Gibson told the young man that only three copies of the book had been prepared in ’39: one for Gibson, one for the Street & Smith office, and the third for a salesman. In the early 1990s, approximately 1993, Arthur Emerson offered the book to a private collector/friend of his for $5,000. The book had been in that collector’s possession until recently, and is currently thought to be the only copy left in existence.

SOLOMON KANE #2 (of 5) - Arriving in comic shops October 29th!
Scott Allie (W), Mario Guevara (P), Dave Stewart (C), John Cassaday (Cover), and Laura Martin (Cover Colors)

“It has fallen upon me, now and again in my sojourns through the world, to ease various evil men of their lives.”
Mysteries emerge during Solomon Kane’s stay in the Castle of the Devil—the beasts that prey upon the local peasantry make their presence known, and another body is discovered. Kane begins to doubt the legends about the ancient chapel beneath the castle. Did a devil-worshiping monk really die there at the hands of his brothers, or was there something even more sinister afoot? And what lives down there now?

Expands upon Robert E. Howard’s unfinished “Castle of the Devil.”

SOLOMON KANE #5 - Coming in January!

The Castle of the Devil hides several secrets -- the most horrible of which may still be locked at the base of the castle in the ruins of an ancient abbey. Solomon Kane gets closer to unveiling the truth behind the crazed monks who used to live there, as he deals with the castle's current batch of strange inhabitants. Escaping with John Silent, his wounded companion, is out of the question, because Kane also seeks justice for the souls of innocent children who were killed on the gallows that litter this evil, tainted region of Germany's Black Forest.

--And Their Memory Was a Bitter Tree: Queen of the Black Coast and Others
by Robert E Howard (Author), Arnie Fenner (Foreword), H. P. Lovecraft (Afterword)

As one of the three most important American pulp fantasy authors of the 1930s (with Lovecraft and Clark Ashton Smith), Robert E.  This is the second collection of stories featuring
The Three Mosquitoes by Ralph Oppenheim.

Once more, their familiar battle cry rings out: ”Let’s Go!”

Always in front was Kirby, their impetuous young leader. Flanking him on either side were mild-eyed and corpulent Shorty Carn, and lanky Travis, the eldest and wisest Mosquito.

CS Moore Studio - Conan the Conqueror statue coming in 2009!
Paradox Entertainment, Inc. and Frank Frazetta have granted The CS Moore Studio the license to create new statues based on Frazetta’s dramatic illustrations of Robert E Howard’s legendary Conan the Barbarian.

The first piece from The CS Moore Studio will be Conan the Conqueror, based on Frazetta’s cover image of the Robert E. Howard book of the same name, released by Lancer Books in 1967. Known to some as “The Berserker,” this piece is arguably the most celebrated Conan illustration ever. The cold-cast porcelain, hand-painted piece will be sculpted by Clayburn Moore, and will feature the warrior Conan astride his horse, with sword and shield extended for battle. A bronze edition is also planned.

Moore created sculptures based on Frank Frazetta’s amazing work in the late ‘90s, all of which sold through quickly and are highly sought after by collectors. This new license allows Moore to use his talents to express “Conan the Conqueror” in dramatic three-dimensional form, and to give fans of both Frazetta and Moore a signature piece for their collections.

“I have always wanted to sculpt this incredibly dynamic piece,” said Moore. “Frazetta is unquestionably one of the greatest talents of our day. It’s an honor to have the opportunity to bring ‘Conan the Conqueror’ to sculpture form.”

“We’re looking forward to The CS Moore Studio bringing Robert E. Howard's Conan to life as an incredibly stunning piece,” said Thommy Wojciechowski, Manager of Creative Affairs at Paradox Entertainment. “We know that the combination of Clay's artistic ability and Frazetta's stunning interpretation of the character will end up as nothing short of fantastic.

The
CS Moore Studio is also pleased to offer a bronze edition of Conan the Barbarian, the powerful piece previously released by Moore as Frazetta’s Barbarian. This piece is limited to 50 pieces, and will be available for order on the CS Moore Studio website.

More information on the
Conan the Conqueror Statue, including release date, pricing, and edition size, will be announced as it becomes available. Visit Clayton Moore's web log for an advance look at the statue.

Pulpfest 2009, a new and improved version of the venerable convention catering to fans and collectors of vintage popular fiction, will be held from Friday, July 31st, through Sunday, August 2nd, at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Sellers of pulp magazines, all-fiction digests, dime novels, and other collectible books and periodicals are already lining up for exhibit space, and the convention will be advertised and promoted extensively to capture the attention of new hobbyists as well as veteran attendees. Preliminary flyers carrying basic information are being distributed at various collectibles shows this fall, beginning with Bouchercon, the annual gathering for collectors of mystery fiction. The Pulpfest 2009 committee has already contacted several publications to inquire about advertising the convention, and additional flyers will be designed and distributed throughout the year.

Additionally, the Pulpfest 2009 website is now operational and can be found at www.pulpcon.com. In the weeks and months to come, it will be updated regularly to provide new information on guests and programming as soon as it becomes available.

Dealers interested in helping promote Pulpfest 2009 can download and print out either of two flyers already available on the website in PDF form. These can be distributed at collectibles shows and sent with mail-order shipments.

Following an extensive search for the best available venue, the Pulpfest 2009 committee chose the Ramada Plaza for its spacious accommodations, numerous amenities, ease of access, and competitive pricing. The committee has negotiated a guest-room rate of $84 plus tax per night, significantly less than that offered by other pulp conventions.

The Convention Center’s main room boasts more than 10,000 square feet of space and will accommodate up to 80 eight-foot tables. A separate room on the same floor will be set up theater-style for our evening programming. A con suite will be open for after-hours conversation and conviviality.

Located just off Exit 116 of Interstate 71, the Ramada Plaza is just 20 minutes from Columbus International Airport and 10 minutes from downtown Columbus, making our convention site easily accessible to attendees whether they’re driving or flying.

The Ramada offers complementary transportation via shuttle to and from the airport, downtown Columbus, and various other locations (including restaurants) within a five-mile radius of the hotel.

The newly renovated hotel additionally offers all the usual amenities. High-speed wireless Internet access is now available in the main lobby, convention center, and guest rooms. Guests can avail themselves of a whirlpool, an exercise room, and both indoor and outdoor pools, as well as a full-service business center. Parking is free for hotel guests and single-day convention attendees.

The Ramada’s spacious restaurant, Justin’s Place, serves traditional American cuisine and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. The hotel’s cozy lounge, Bowties, is open until two a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Ramada Plaza is an extremely popular venue for conventions of our type and size. For 15 years now it has hosted Cinevent, an annual confab of vintage-film fans and collectors of movie memorabilia. Hotel management is both committed to and experienced in providing the courteous, comprehensive service that produces satisfied conventioneers.

Pricing schedules for dealer tables and registrations will be forthcoming shortly. Information on guests and programming will be posted here and on the Pulpfest 2009 website as soon as it is confirmed.

The Way the Future Was - Now available!
The Way the Future Was by Pierre Comtois
Once upon a time, the year 2000 had held a fascination for young people of the 1950s and 60s as the point beyond which the future predicted by decades of science fiction writers would arrive. Unfortunately, that future never happened and what we ended up with has been the somewhat disappointing present. Luckily, however, our imaginations are as sharp and bright as they ever were so that we can continue to look forward to a superfuture made up of flying cars, monorails, moving sidewalks, and space liners heading to Ganymede. It is in keeping with those dreams that the stories in this collection were written hopefully to recapture the spirit of optimism young people had for the future at a time when World War II was not that far removed from living memory and American heroes were square jawed soldiers or God fearing scientists who were as comfortable in the cockpit of a jet as they were in a laboratory. So if you are one of those SF fans who are still looking to the future for personal spacecraft, ruined Martian cities, or high speed rail service on Venus, then look no farther than these fables of a time that may yet come to pass!

will be the second collection of stories featuring

The Klarkash-Ton Cycle: Clark Ashton Smith's Cthuhu Mythos Fiction
The Ghoul, A Rendering from the Arabic, The Hunters from Beyond, The Vaults of Abomi, The Nameless Offspring, Ubbo-Sathla, The Werewolf of Averoigne, The Eidolon of the Blind, Vulthoom, The Treader of the Dust, The Infernal Star

Clark Ashton Smith finished “The Ghoul” on November 11, 1930 and was pleased with the result. He mentioned it to Lovecraft: “The legend is so hideous, that I would not be surprised if there were some mention of it in the Necronomicon. Will you verify this for me?” Not surprisingly, Smith’s instincts proved to be sound; Lovecraft reported: “Oh, yes — Abdul mentioned your ghoul, & told of other adventures of his.”

Clark Ashton Smith made unique contributions to and understanding of the Cthulhu Mythos. In an exchange of letters with August Derleth after the death of their friend Lovecraft, Smith, the first Mythos buff, set forth a notorious theology of the Mythos, making the Old Ones evil foes of the blessed Elder Gods as well as elemental forces of earth, air, fire and water.

It is fascinating how Smith’s original tale “The Ghoul,” turned out to be the mere tip of the iceberg for a larger tale, in effect, a kind of round robin to which he, Lovecraft, and Lin Carter would all contribute.

The Ocean: 100th Anniversary Collection
Edited by John Locke

THE OCEAN is one of the great forgotten pulp magazines. Started by Frank Munsey in 1907, it lasted a mere eleven issues before folding in 1908. It was also one of the first specialized pulps—a sea-story magazine—with contributions from an amazing variety of authors: some, the best sea-story writers of the day; others, destined for anonymity; and still others who achieved fame in surprising ways. This 100th Anniversary Collection presents twenty of the best stories
published in THE OCEAN, representing the wide scope of the magazine’s contents.
Over 30 pages of nonfiction material included: a history of THE OCEAN; profiles of editor, Bob Davis, and the motley crew of authors who found their way into THE OCEAN’S pages—and ours.
Some of the featured stories:
  • “In the Land of To-Morrow” by Epes Winthrop Sargent. This illustrated two-part serial was an early scientific romance, of the kind Munsey pulps would become famous for. A down-on-his-luck inventor is introduced to a secret island where science is the highest ideal, the technology is futuristic, and freedom is . . .
The author was moonlighting. A noted columnist, he was one of three founding partners of the Broadway trade paper, Variety.
  • When All Were Equal” by T. Jenkins Hains. A harrowing tale of men at sea struggling against nature’s fiercest weather. It was a time when every man was looking out for himself, and no one there was thinking of dying for the other fellow’s sake. It was just struggle, breathe, and struggle, with the wind, now as cold as ice, howling over us and the frost of the winter in the air.
Hains knew of what he wrote. A seasoned sailor, his yacht was caught in a hurricane in 1903. When a passing ship stopped to help, the rescuers found his rudder broken, his rigging torn to shreds, and his wife lashed to the mast. And that only scratches the surface of his remarkable life. . . .
  • “When His Chance Came” by Clarence Budington Kelland. When his captain is stricken with smallpox, a first mate takes charge of a coal-ship crossing Lake Superior—and the superstitious crew threatens mutiny. “I’ll get this boat into Duluth if I have to kill every one of you with my bare hands and work her in alone!”
Kelland went on to become one of the highest-paid authors of his era—and one of the greatest gadflies.
6x9” perfect bound, 20 stories, 234 pages, $18

Overlook Press - Coming in December!
THE MOON POOL by A. Merritt
Dr. Walter T. Goodwin is sailing back to New York after a botanical expedition to the South Seas when he meets his old friend, Dr. David Throckmartin. The heartbroken Throckmartin relates a haunting tale to Dr. Goodwin—a tale of a tropical island and a strange stone door through which a hypnotic otherworldly light shines. Throckmartin tells of how the light had captured his companions and of his own powerlessness to stop it.

When his friend disappears, Dr. Goodwin sets out to find the source of the mysterious moonlight. Little does he realize how formidable a foe he has pitted himself against. First published in 1918, The Moon Pool is commonly considered to be the inspiration of the ABC series Lost.

SIMON BOLIVAR GRIMES, OUTLAW by E. Hoffmann Price
He had a coffin-shaped face, and like the thoroughbred he rode, his legs were long; but while the horse was graceful as a panther, the rider was gangling, slightly stooped, and his oversized hands did not know what to do with themselves when he dismounted at the hitching rack in front of Squint Eye Morgan’s Sabine Palace, a dive so named because of its proximity to the river which separates Texas and Louisiana. A .45 single action Colt was awkwardly strapped to his thigh, and its owner looked as though he must have picked a lucky day for his very recent first shave, otherwise he would have cut his own throat; yet somehow, he did not stumble over the hand-hewn planks as he strode to the bar. Squint Eye Morgan winked broadly when the boy piped, “Whiskey, if yo’ please, suh.” Then, voice suddenly going bass, he boomed like a yearling bull, “I’m Simon Bolivar Grimes, suh, lookin’ fo’ my uncle’s ranch in Crockett County in the next day or two.”

And that is our introduction to Simon Bolivar Grimes, E. Hoffmann Price's answer to Robert E. Howard's Breckenridge Elkins. While both Mountain Men were able to get themselves into a whole peck of trouble, Price's Grimes also had the ladies to take care of, in the Spicy manner! This collection of 13 stories include 11 from Spicy Western Stories, and one each from Speed Western Stories and Fighting Western. Each story is fully illustrated with the original pulp magazine's artwork.

Age of Aces
Coming soon from Age of Aces
will be the second collection of stories featuring

Airship 27:SECRET AGENT X-Volume II (Deluxe reprint edition.) - Now available!
Airship 27 Productions and Cornerstone Book Publishers are very happy to announce the release of our second collection of Secret Agent X stories first published two years ago.  Since the first edition sold out, Airship 27 Productions was very anxious to get this book back in print; this time with a brand new story by B.C. Bell added to the reprinted gems penned by Sean Ellis, G.L.Gick and Kevin Noel Olson.  All of which now paves the way for Airship 27 Productions to continue the series based on pulpdom’s first and greatest super spy,

Secret Agent X, The Man of a Thousand Faces.

Secret Agent X was published by Periodical House.  It was launched by veteran pulp writer Paul Chadwick under the penname of Brant House in 1934 with the first adventure called The Torture Trust.  Secret Agent X was a government funded anti-crime crusader.  His real name and identity were never revealed during the curse of his 41 stories that ran until March of 1939.  The character exhibited many similarities with other pulp heroes of the time such as  The Shadow, The Green Lama and Operator 5.  Although he would never reach their status in sales, Secret Agent X was the only real successful single-character title the company ever produced.  Chadwick penned the first sixteen issues before moving on.  There would be a total of 41 Secret Agent X stories published during the course of the hero’s run.

“We are aware of Altus Press’s current project of reprinting the entire run of the original Secret Agent X adventures,” commented Ron Fortier,
Airship 27 Productions co-founder and managing editor. “We’d like to think our books perfectly compliment those reprint volumes.  Now pulp fans have more Secret Agent X stories to look forward to on a regular basis.”   With the publication of this reprint edition, Airship 27 Productions is now gearing up to continue the series and hopes to have the all new Volume III out before the end of the year.

Edited by Fortier (Captain Hazzard and the Ghost Squad), this reprint edition also contains twelve black and white illustrations by Rob Davis (Star Trek) and features a stunning cover by Davis and Chris Carney.

Dark Horse Comics - New Robert E. Howard titles are in the works!
At the Baltimore Comic Con last weekend, editor/writer Scott Allie confirmed that there are reprint collections coming for Kull and Solomon Kane, as well as other new comics from the Howard library.

Del Rey - New Robert E. Howard title due in early 2010!
Jay from Paradox Entertainment posted the following information on the REH Forum:
Thought everyone would be thrilled to know that work is now underway with the upcoming 'Desert Adventures' book, to be published by Del Rey in early 2010. Hardly having had time to rest efter editing the upcoming Best of Horror book (on sale Oct 28, 2008), Rusty Burke is presently going through the stories featuring El Borak and Kirby O'Donnell. As always, typesetter Stuart Williams will make sure it is a pleasant read for your eyes. The book is planned to contain:

El Borak:
- The Daughter of Erlik Khan
- Hawk of the Hills
- Swords of the Hills (aka "The Lost Valley of Iskander")
- Blood of the Gods
- Sons of the Hawk (aka "The Country of the Knife")
- Son of the White Wolf
- Three-Bladed Doom (short)
- Three-Bladed Doom (long)

Kirby O'Donnell:
- The Curse of the Crimson God
- Sword of Shahrazar (aka "The Treasure of Shaibar Kahn")
- The Treasures of Tartary

Steve Clarney:
- The Fire of Asshurbanipal (adventure version)

A slight change from previous books is letting more than one artist illustrate the book. Having depicted El Borak in vivid color in the REH art calendar a few years back, Jim & Ruth Keegan will be painting all color illustrations in the book, as well as art directing the project. All b/w illustrations will be made by Tim Bradstreet. Bradstreet is known for his distinctive style, once described by himself as 'stylistic photorealism' as his work combines the use of posed photography with pencils, inks and coloring. He is well-known for his comic book covers for The Punisher (Marvel) and Hellblazer (Vertigo/DC) and has also worked in movie projects, such as visual design for Blade 2 and poster art for the movie The Punisher.
Jim and Ruth Keegan's El Borak is shown at the right.

Hard Case Crime - Coming in October and beyond!
October 2008
THE FIRST QUARRY by Max Allan Collins, Cover art by Ken Laager
Crime fiction readers know Quarry, the ruthless killer-for-hire, from Max Allan Collins’ acclaimed novels—most recently THE LAST QUARRY, which told the story of the assassin’s final assignment (and was the basis for the feature film The Last Lullaby).

But where did Quarry’s story start? For the first time ever, the best-selling author of ROAD TO PERDITION takes us back to the beginning, revealing the never-before-told story of Quarry’s first job: infiltrating a college town and eliminating a professor whose affair with one of his beautiful, young students is the least of his sins...

November 2008
GUN WORK by David J. Schow, Cover art by Joe DeVito
Life isn't always cheap south of the border—some lives are worth a million dollars. That’s what the Mexican kidnapping cartel was demanding for Carl Ledbetter’s wife. So Carl reached out to the one person he knew with a chance in hell of saving her, a deadly man whose own life he’d saved in the sands of Iraq. It was time to call in some favors. Because some situations call for negotiation, but some...call for gun work.

December 2008
FIFTY-TO-ONE by Charles Ardai, Cover art by Glen Orbik
CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF HARD CASE CRIME!

Okay, not really. But what if, instead of having been founded 50 books ago, Hard Case Crime had been founded 50 years ago, by a rascal out to make a quick buck off the popularity of pulp fiction? Such a fellow might make a few enemies—especially after publishing a supposed non-fiction account of a heist at a Mob-run nightclub, actually penned by an 18-year-old showgirl. With both the cops and the crooks after them, our heroes are about to learn that reading and writing pulp novels is a lot more fun than living
them...

The Horror Stories of Robert E. Howard - Coming October 28th!
by Robert E.

Thanks to Rusty Burke for the new information on this eagerly anticipated title!

H. P. Lovecraft film festival - Coming October 31st!
Starting at 8pm EST on Halloween, Turner Classic Movies is having a HPL film festival.
TCM will be broadcasting THE HAUNTED PALACE, DIE, MONSTER, DIE, THE SHUTTERED ROOM, and THE DUNWICH HORROR.

Lester Dent - Previously unpublished story to see print!
Will Murray announced that he has sold an unpublished Lester Dent story to editor Otto Penzler for the forthcoming BLACK LIZARD BOOK OF BLACK MASK STORIES. Written for Joe Shaw in 1936, Dent was forced to revise this story again and again. The final version featured Oscar Sail and was called "Sail."  While this version is roughly the same storyline, the hero is very, very different from the Oscar Sail we all know. Dent himself preferred this version, and so does Otto. Since Dent wrote only 2 Sail stories for BLACK MASK (a third "Cay" was abandoned when Shaw left the magazine) and they are often anthologized as among the magazine's best stories, this is an event. Look for "Luck" next year.

Pulpcon - A "New and Improved" Pulpcon is in the works!
Mike Chomko has announced that he, Jack Cullers, and Barry Traylor have decided to organize their own Pulpcon.
From Mike's announcement:
Jack, Barry, and I are currently investigating sites in Columbus, Ohio for a planned Pulpcon to be held in late July or early August 2009. We are also in discussions with interested parties who are considering holding an East Coast pulp and paper convention, most likely in November 2009.

Whenever we hold the convention, we plan to publicize it and open it up to a wider array of material than has traditionally been allowed at Pulpcon. However, if we are to organize a successful convention, we will need your help. Please plan to support our convention in whatever month it is held.

If you are a dealer and would be interested in selling at our show, please let us know as soon as possible. If you are interested in lending a hand, please drop us a line. More particulars will follow as our plans become better defined.

If you'd like to be added to the new Pulpcon mailing list, please send your name and address to:

The Pulp Rack - New additions!
After too, too long a hiatus from posting new info to The Pulp Rack, I've added a new entry. It's not too lengthy, but any extended fast -- whether from food, drink, or writing -- should be broken in a moderate manner.

So, this little essay, "Delights in Pulp Prose," takes a look at a passage from a Theodore Roscoe short story that appeared in a 1929 issue of Argosy All-Story Weekly, "The Black Friar."

You'll find the new post here, at this URL:  http://pulprack.com/arch/2008/09/delights_in_pul.html

THE COMPLETE ADVENTURES OF TOFFEE by Charles F. Myers
Apparently paying homage to Thorne Smith and "Topper", Charles F. Myer (real name Charles H. Myers) wrote a series of stories starring Toffee, a dream girl in the strictest sense of the word: she resided in Marc Pillsworth's mind. She also existed in the real world whenever she could escape Marc's subconscious. The Toffee stories are pure fantasy, are fun to read, and are a bit mischievous and spicy. Myers went on, under the pen name of Henry Farrell, to write "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" and "What Ever Happened to Cousin Charlotte?", both made into hit motion pictures. All ten Toffee stories are contained in this volume and all of the original illustrations from the pulps and digest magazines where the stories first appeared are included.
