Cussler - BLACK WIND will be available November 30th! In December 1944, Captain Miyoshi Horinouchi, staff operations officer of the Japanese Imperial Navy Sixth Fleet, informs Lieutenant Commander Ogawa of Submarine I-403 of a change of assignment. Instead of patrolling the Philippines, he is to "escort' a special guest from the Kure Naval Base in Japan to the "enemy's doorsteps". The civilian Dr. Jisaichi Tanaka of the Army Medical College has found a devastating biological agent that will bring the Americans to their knees begging for peace. If he fails on this mission, Japan will inevitably lose the war as the Battle of the Pacific is all but over since the recent fleet devastation at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. However neither this sub nor a companion ever made it to its intended target. In 2007 a South Korean knows where the subs sank and has plans for uniting his country by distracting the Americans with the launching of the deadly biological cargo on Los Angeles. Only Dirk Pitt Sr. and his adult children Jr. and Summer along with his crew from the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) stand in the way of success. From Publishers Weekly: About halfway through this rip-snorting adventure thriller, a "white-haired man" rescues heroes Dirk Pitt Jr. and his sister, Summer, from death by drowning. That man is revealed to be author Cussler (Trojan Odyssey, etc.), reminding Dirk of "an older version of his own father," legendary oceanographer Dirk Pitt, hero of Cussler's previous novels. Just as the primary action baton is passed in this tale from Pitt Sr. to Jr., readers may note that Cussler's coauthor is his own son. But even if Cussler is beginning to pass on his writing baton, he's doing so with panache: thriller fans will revel in this action-packed yarn of land- and sea-based derring-do stuffed with technical details on matters from biochemical weapons "chimeras" to rocket launches. The villain is a South Korean industrialist working for the North Koreans with an eye toward unifying Korea by ridding the country of American troops, allowing for an invasion of the South. His plan is to aim a sea-borne rocket filled with a combo of deadly viruses at Los Angeles, with clues laying blame on Japanese terrorists, thus distracting America while the North makes its move. But villain and modus operandi matter less than the series of exciting hairbreadth escapes wrought by Dirks Jr. and Sr. and Summer—including Dirk Sr.'s escape from being poached alive in a minisub trapped underneath massive rocket boosters spewing an inferno of flames. There's a slight, nasty gloss of "yellow peril" on the villain and his actions, and it's only the Americans who greet likely death with a grin and a quip, but that's a minor knock on some major entertainment that's bound toward the top of the charts. 544 pages for $27.95 |  |

According to Rich Harvey, it will definitely be out this year. The Domino Lady was among the original "pulp vixens" in the 1930s. The magazine covers that featured her, painted by Norman Saunders, have been reproduced numerous times in journals and coffee table books. She has been the star of a comic book series from Eros Comics, and her stories have appeared in scattered fanzines over the last decade. Until now, no one has attempted to collect her adventures in one volume. - Firefly film rescheduled! Joss Whedon's Firefly film, Serenity, has been pushed back from April to September 2005. News of the delay was first blogged by Joss himself on his WHEDONesque website. Apparently April got crowded with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio decided September was a clearer corridor for the film to make the kind of impact it should. According to Whedon, "This isn't about a lack of confidence in the film – in fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to, they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign since there's not a single finished effect in the film." Written and directed by Whedon and produced by Barry Mendel, Serenity features the majority of the show's cast reprising their roles for the feature: Nathan Fillion as Mal, Gina Torres as Zoe, Adam Baldwin as Jayne, Alan Tudyk as Wash, Jewel Staite as Kaylee, Morena Baccarin as Inara, Summer Glau as River, Sean Maher as Simon and Ron Glass as Book. ABC Primetime Entertainment President Stephen McPherson announced this week that when the Jennifer Garner-starring spy drama ALIAS returns to the network for its fourth season, it will be on Wednesdays, no doubt in a bid to capitalize on the sizable success of Abrams’ desert isle series LOST. ALIASwill kicks off on Wednesday, January 5th with a two-hour premiere. A week later, on January 12th, it will take on its regular timeslot from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Like Fox’s 24, also set for a January bow, ALIAS’s fourth season will air consecutively throughout the season without reruns. | |

Price: $39.95; 176 pages; Hardcover ISBN: 1-933065-04-4 The first bio and art retrospective of one of the defining pulp artists of the 20th century Lee Brown Coye was one of art's "almost men"--not a loser, but never quite a winner. Bad luck haunted much of his career. He began his life as an artist on the eve of the Great Depression and was forced to labor as a malcontented advertising agency art director through much of the 1930s. Coye was ready to make a breakthrough when he began to appear in the Whitney Museum's annual exhibitions and had a watercolor brought by the Metropolitan Museum for its permanent collection--then Pearl Harbor was attacked. The arrival of abstractionists fleeing war-torn Europe forced American artists working in a realistic style, like Coye, to the periphery of the art world. While Coye dabbled in abstract paintings, and later worked as a medical artist and cartoonist, he always considered himself primary an illustrator. In periodicals such as Weird Tales and Amazing Stories, Coye's uniquely macabre and original art found the perfect home. Illustrating horror stories matched Coye's anatomy lessons with his macabre sensibilities. At this time his studios were gothic abodes filled with skeletons, dead animals, live rats, and human body parts from a medical college - all models for his art. Some of his best work was done for pulp magazines and Arkham House works by H.P. Lovecraft. In author Luis Ortiz' words, "Coye was an art machine and an American Original. As a child he was considered a 'holy terror'. As an adult, after a hard day of doing medical illustrations, he thought nothing of walking into a bar carrying a decapitated human head under his arm, placing it on the counter and buying his guillotined 'friend' a drink. On another occasion he 'borrowed' the finger-bone of a saint (a holy relic he was building a reliquary for) from the Catholic Church in his hometown of Syracuse, New York. The Syracuse diocese was beside itself and had to send clergy to perform a blessing on Coye's studio since the relic could only travel to holy places." Ortiz adds, "Coye's horror illustrations are not like anything done before-or since. You would have to go back to Goya's black paintings to find anything comparable. Yet despite the darkness, Coye's art was always filled with traces of humor." Parts of The Blair Witch Project film may have been based on a true life incident that occurred to Coye as a young man when he discovered a strange, isolated farmhouse in the backwoods of upstate New York. The house was surrounded by bizarre constructs of lashed-together sticks and had an unusual tenant. The unexplained display seemed to allude to some dark nature, and stayed with Coye the rest of his life. Later on, sticks would become a recurring motif in his illustrations. Horror writer Karl Wagner transmogrified the incident into an award winning story, "Sticks", which may have influenced the makers of Blair Witch. | Flash Gordon Stephen Sommers's business partner, Bob Ducsay, is talking about where he sees the proposed new big screen version of "Flash Gordon" is going and he stated to Now Playing Magazine that it is definitely not being approached in the tongue in cheek way the previous film version was: "We're in the process of developing it. It in fact is actually going back to a lot more of the original source material for Flash and is not based on the 1980 movie. And tonally, as sort of broad entertainments as the films we make are, clearly we haven't ever worked at that level of camp. So we're not moving in that direction at all. There's all kinds of material. There's comics. There's serials. So all of those things provide source material." Will Sommers helm it? "[Stephen] is not committed to directing. What really happens is he comes across a screenplay, or he writes a screenplay, that he's interested in. Bond 21 Citing a "top industry source," Moviehole reports that Eon Productions is only considering "one" actor for the role of 007 in the next James Bond film. That thesp is Ioan Gruffudd, soon to be seen as Mr. Fantastic in the Fantastic Four movie. Gruffudd's credits include King Arthur and the Horatio Hornblower telepics. Moviehole claims that "others may float into the mix, but at the moment, he's the only guy that EON are seriously considering for the role." Gruffudd was first mentioned as a Bond contender way back in 2000. Instead of patrolling the Philippines, he is to "escort' a special guest from the Kure Naval Base in Japan to the "enemy's doorsteps". The civilian Dr. Jisaichi Tanaka of the Army Medical College has found a devastating biological agent that will bring the Americans to their knees begging for peace. If he fails on this mission, Japan will inevitably lose the war as the Battle of the Pacific is all but over since the recent fleet devastation at the Battle of Leyte Gulf. However neither this sub nor a companion ever made it to its intended target. In 2007 a South Korean knows where the subs sank and has plans for uniting his country by distracting the Americans with the launching of the deadly biological cargo on Los Angeles. Only Dirk Pitt Sr. and his adult children Jr. and Summer along with his crew from the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) stand in the way of success. From Publishers Weekly: About halfway through this rip-snorting adventure thriller, a "white-haired man" rescues heroes Dirk Pitt Jr. and his sister, Summer, from death by drowning. That man is revealed to be author Cussler (Trojan Odyssey, etc.), reminding Dirk of "an older version of his own father," legendary oceanographer Dirk Pitt, hero of Cussler's previous novels. Just as the primary action baton is passed in this tale from Pitt Sr. to Jr., readers may note that Cussler's coauthor is his own son. But even if Cussler is beginning to pass on his writing baton, he's doing so with panache: thriller fans will revel in this action-packed yarn of land- and sea-based derring-do stuffed with technical details on matters from biochemical weapons "chimeras" to rocket launches. The villain is a South Korean industrialist working for the North Koreans with an eye toward unifying Korea by ridding the country of American troops, allowing for an invasion of the South. His plan is to aim a sea-borne rocket filled with a combo of deadly viruses at Los Angeles, with clues laying blame on Japanese terrorists, thus distracting America while the North makes its move. But villain and modus operandi matter less than the series of exciting hairbreadth escapes wrought by Dirks Jr. and Sr. and Summer—including Dirk Sr.'s escape from being poached alive in a minisub trapped underneath massive rocket boosters spewing an inferno of flames. There's a slight, nasty gloss of "yellow peril" on the villain and his actions, and it's only the Americans who greet likely death with a grin and a quip, but that's a minor knock on some major entertainment that's bound toward the top of the charts. 544 pages for $27.95 | |
