First two volumes collecting ALL Lamb's stories are now available! If you think you know Lamb's work from his histories or the public domain fiction that pops up from time to time, you don't know what you've missed. At long last the fiction from his ADVENTURE days—the same fiction that inspired Robert E. Howard to name him one of his favorite authors--is becoming available. The first of two volumes collecting ALL of Lamb's Cossack stories are now available for pre-order from Amazon. "Wolf of the Steppes" and "Warriors of the Steppes" are being published by University of Nebraska Press's Bison Books (the other two volumes will be printed next year). And when I write all, I mean every single Khlit the Cossack adventure, printed in order, some of which have been out of print since the 1930s and some which have never been printed between book covers. There's more--the volumes include all the stories of Khlit's allies and fellow Cossacks, as well as more than a dozen standalone Cossack stories, behind-the-scenes letters, and introductions from leading speculative fiction authors. This is the stuff of grand adventure, fiction teeming with deadly swordsmen, scheming priests, evil cults, gleaming treasure, and damsels in need of rescue. But that's not all-- Two of Lamb's last stories for ADVENTURE magazine were the moody, action-packed adventures of Nial O'Gordon. Entertainment to Develop Robert E. Howard Western LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21, 2006--Not long after acquiring the entire Robert E. Howard library, Paradox Entertainment announced it has commenced development of a motion picture based on one of Howard's many western stories, titled "Vultures of Wahpeton." The story is an action thriller that focuses on the character Steve Corcoran, an amoral Texas gunslinger who finds himself far from home in a mining boomtown. Appointed Sheriff, his job is to rid the town of its crushing lawlessness. But Corcoran soon finds himself drawn into a conspiracy to rob the town, led by a mysterious gang known as The Vultures. The movie will be produced by Paradox's Peter Sederowsky and Fredrik Malmberg along with producer Ken Aguado via his company, Standard Film Group. Leif Rahmqvist acts as executive producer. Paradox has hired David Heller to adapt the novella into a screenplay. Says Aguado, "This is really one of the best stories I've read since `Unforgiven.' It has all the elements of the great Hollywood westerns: a strong, enigmatic lead fighting evil while battling his inner demons." Ken Aguado is the producer of movies such as "Sexual Life" (Anne Heche), "The Salton Sea" (Val Kilmer, Vincent D'Onofrio) and "Ticker" (Dennis Hopper). David Heller was represented by Caren Bohrman of The Bohrman Agency. It was on February 1, 2006, that Paradox Entertainment announced the acquisition of all rights to the stories and characters of pulp author Robert E. Howard. One of the greatest authors of his time, Howard is considered the creator of the genre "Sword & Sorcery," perhaps most known through the character Conan. His stories take us to such different surroundings as ancient Atlantis, the North African desert during WW1, hidden opium dens in dark alleys of the Big City, the Wild West and northern Britain during the invasion of the Roman Legions. Paradox Entertainment also owns the self-created property Mutant Chronicles, presently in pre-production for a live-action feature, directed by Simon Hunter. | |

WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION (#6) - May 5-7, 2006 TOUGH GUYS. BAD GIRLS. MASKED HEROES. SPACE VIXENS. FEARLESS ADVENTURERS AND NAMELESS HORRORS will descend on Chicagoland along with their creators, collectors, and fans for the sixth annual Windy City Pulp and Paperback Convention from May 5-7. The three-day event will celebrate the uniquely American form of popular literature. Attendees will hear from actual artists of the pulp era; watch films inspired by the great pulp writers and find rare issues of such seminal publications as Doc Savage, Amazing Stories, Black Mask, Weird Tales and thousands more. The medium, which thrived from the roaring twenties through WWII, vied with radio and the movies as the era's most popular form of entertainment. The 10-cent magazines printed on coarse pulpwood paper and boasting eye grabbing (and often lurid) four-color cover paintings introduced such immortals as Edgar Rice Burroughs, Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Ray Bradbury, L. Ron Hubbard, H.P. Lovecraft and Robert Heinlein to the American public. The pulps are widely recognized as the inspiration for such current pop culture mainstays as Star Trek, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and virtually every comic book hero from Superman to Spider-Man. Highlights of this year's convention include a celebration of the 75th anniversary of the seminal pulp hero, The Shadow! Guests will include Jim Steranko, the groundbreaking comic book artist and media phenomenon whose paperback covers and posters featuring the Night Master are considered among the finest depictions of the .45 wielding hawk-nosed hero. Also, Frank Gladney, son of original Shadow cover artist Graves Gladney, will present a retrospective of his father’s classic pulp work. Previous guests of honor, award winning science fiction writer Frank Robinson and prolific pulp cover artist Ernie Chiracka (whose work has graced over 500 magazines. paperback and good girl art calendars) will also be in attendance. Steranko will speak at 7:00 pm on Saturday. The art show featuring the works of Steranko, Gladney and other priceless pieces of vintage pulp art will be on display all weekend. In the mid-1970s, legendary artist Jim Steranko created the definitive version of The Shadow in 27 paperback covers for Pyramid and HBJ books. Although a few of these paintings have been displayed at other conventions in the past, they have never been displayed as a group...until now! Steranko is Guest of Honor at the 6th Windy City Pulp and Paperback Convention, now just two weeks away (May 5-May 7). reprints and e-texts may end! Blackmask Online was contacted by Conde Nast lawyers on December 24, 2005 regarding the Blackmask Online Shadow and Doc Savage ebooks and paperback reprints. Conde Nast lawyers produced 506 copyright renewal notices for Doc Savage and The Shadow and gave Blackmask Online a deadline of April 7, 2006 for settlement. Settlement included removal of the Doc Savage and Shadow ebooks and a stop to all reprinting of the Doc Savage and Shadow novels with no penalties attached. Despite this more than generous offer, Blackmask Online has declined and opted to go to court. The case goes before a magistrate in Greenbelt, MD on May 8. | |||

10th Annual Fantastic Pulps Show & Sale -
April 29, 2006 The 9th Annual Fantastic Pulps Show & Sale will be held Saturday, April 29, 2006 from 10am to 5pm. The location as always, is the lower level of the Lillian H. Smith branch of the Toronto Public Library, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The show is a small but pulp specific event of 25 tables, featuring pulps, pulp reprints and related items, as well as video and a scattering of other collectables. The show is a friendly event, and the city of Toronto has many attractions to offer for a vacation/pulp outing. There is a slide show, auction, and periodic tours of the library's own pulp collection. The library is located in the heart of Toronto at 239 College Street, Toronto, Ontario, Canada. | 2006 WINDY CITY PULP & PAPERBACK CONVENTION
(#6) - May 5-7, 2006 The Windy City website has been updated to add initial info on next year's show. IMPORTANT NOTE – In mid-June, the hotel we’d used in April 2005 and had booked for April 2006, the Ramada Plaza O’Hare, informed us they’d been sold and were demolishing their convention facilities in late 2005. We were fortunate enough to reach a deal with the Wyndham O’Hare (in many respects a nicer hotel) – which is right next to the Ramada – to take the con in 2006, but the only weekend they could accommodate us for 2006 was May 5-7. So, both the hotel and dates have changed if you pre-registered at the past Windy City Pulp & PB Con! This year's theme will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of The Shadow, and in connecion with that anniversary, we're planning a number of special Shadow displays and events. MEMBERSHIPS: Memberships are $30 for all three days, $20 for Friday only, $20 for Saturday only, and $10 for Sunday only. Please note that we can now accept payments online through paypal (account pulpvault@msn.com). If you register before April 1, 2006, your membership badge will be mailed to you, allowing you to by-pass the registration line and pick up your program book and other materials at your convenience. DEALER INFO: Dealer setup begins Friday at 10am – the dealer room is open to the public from 2-6 pm Friday, 9 am-5 pm Saturday and 9 am-4pm Sunday. There is no access to the room on Thursday. For dealers, tables are 6’ long. Each table includes: 1 tablecloth and 2 chairs. Each dealer and dealer’s helper must also buy a membership. Tables are SOLD OUT – please email to be placed on the waitlist. GUEST OF HONOR: Artist Jim Steranko – well known to pulp fans for his fantastic Shadow paperback covers, as well as a host of other terrific art – will be our Guest of Honor. He will be displaying his original Shadow covers, as well as giving a presentation on Saturday. Also, Frank Gladney, son of Shadow pulp artist Graves Gladney, will be a guest at the con and will be displaying a number of his father’s original Shadow pulp covers, as well as giving a presentation on Graves Gladney on Friday. Previous Guests of Honor Frank Robinson and Ernest Chiriacka will also be attending the con. AUCTION: The auction will kick off Saturday at 8 pm. If you have material you’d like to submit, please contact us at info@windycitypulpandpaper.com. ART SHOW: We will once again be hosting an art show displaying original pulp and paperback art. For the second year in a row, the art show is sponsored by Dan Zimmer and the fine folks at Illustration magazine (http://www.illustration-magazine.com). If you have any art you’d like to make available for display in the art show, please contact us. The art show will be open Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons. PULP FILM FEST: Our Pulp Film Fest shows old movies based on pulp stories, on 16 mm film. There will be one session Friday (beginning around 8 pm) and one session Saturday (following the auction). More info will be posted on the website closer to the con. The Pulp Film Fest is organized by Ed Hulse and sponsored by Blood ‘N’ Thunder magazine (http://www.geocities.com/poppub/). PROGRAM BOOK: All attendees will receive a program book, containing pulp articles and reprints. To advertise in the program book, rates are: full page ads $60 (4 1/8" x 6.75"), half page $35 (4 1/8" x 3 3/8"), business card size $20 (3.25" x 2"). CON SUITE: Our con suite will operate from Friday afternoon until late Saturday night/early Sunday morning – stop by and grab a drink and some munchies, while chatting about our favorite hobby. The room rates at the new Hotel are $92/night plus tax (which is the same as the rate at our old hotel). The Movie - Coming in 2008! In a radio interview this week, Joel Surnow, the creator and executive producer of "24," revealed the following. A "24" movie will be filmed in the summer of 2007 with a release date in 2008. The movie will still take place over a 24 hour period, but will consist of three 40-minute real-time parts allowing for Jack Bauer to travel greater distances during the course of the story and bring him to more varied locations. It was also revealed that at the time the movie appears, Kiefer Sutherland will probably be off the show. Source: Moviehole | |||
