Issue Checklist

The Australian Journal

Subtitled "A Weekly Record of Amusing and Instructive Literature, Science and the Arts", The Australian Journal was one of Australia's longest lived and most influential literary magazines.

Each issue had three serials, plus short stories. Most of the fiction was by Australian writers, but there was a good deal of imported stuff especially in the 1870s and 1880s. It contained a good mixture of romance, adventure, crime/detective, historical, supernatural/horror.

Fitz James O'Brien's famous short story, What Was It?, was published there in 1866, plus, over the years, various serials by the likes of Sylvanus Cobb, Eugene Sue, BL Farjeon, Harriet Lewis, Carlotta Kingsley; and, later on, short stories by the likes of BM Croker and Robert Murray Gilchrist.
