Arguably the most influential magazine of the Victorian period and called, by Sutherland "the outstanding magazine vehicle for fiction in the nineteenth century." Set the standard and format imitated by many. Authors include John Galt, John Gibson Lockhart, James Hogg, Samuel Warren, Bulwer Lytton, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Joseph Conrad, John Buchan ("The 39 Steps" 1915) and many more. entitled Edinburgh Monthly Magazine for first six issues.
