Fantastic Science Fiction

Total Issues: 2

Dreadful juvenile sf. According to Walter Gibson all of the stories in this magazine were written either by himself or Ed Burkholder. Gibson could only identify one of his pseudonyms. One of the bylines is a known Burkholder pseudonym. J. Randolph Cox, who prepared a massive bibliography of Gibson's work, examined the remainder of the stories and is of the opinion that the two Bruce Crandall stories are probably by Gibson, and that the others are probably not.

Fantastic Universe

Total Issues: 69

Fantastic Universe ran for 69 issues, from June 1953 to March 1960, under two different publishers. It was part of the explosion of science fiction magazine publishing in the 1950s in the United States, and was moderately successful, outlasting almost all the other magazines of the period. The main editors were Leo Margulies and Hans Stefan Santesson; under Santesson's tenure the quality declined somewhat, and the magazine became known for printing much UFO-related material.
