The Reader's Digest

Not important for fiction (although it has published condensed novels, but most fiction is reprint), but notable for two other factors: (a) it has achieved what is said to be the world's largest circulation of any magazine (circa 31 million in 1981); and (b) it established the so-called "digest" format (approx. 7.5" tall by 5.25" wide) which was later copied by many fiction magazines. A British edition has been published since 1938.

Reader's Scope

READER'S SCOPE was the antithesis of READER'S DIGEST, in format, at least. Some of the contributors are pretty impressive. Truman Capote, for one, was a regular columnist even before he hit 'The Big Time.' Other 'contributors' like Jack London and Poe are almost certainly all reprints, but a fair amount of the fiction was probably first appearance.
