Spicy Armadillo Stories was divided into two sections. The first section published articles and features on the pulps, both serious and light-hearted. There was a wonderful column by George Evans called "George Evans' Scrapbook." Fan artists producing work for us included Paul McCall (we introduced him to pulp fandom and, in fact, printed the book on his coier), Peggy Ranson, Ron Wilber, Dan Aldredge, Kevin Duncan, Jim Garrison, Bobb Cotter, Mark Fults, George Evans, Wally jones and Bobb Cotter. Writers included David Bates, Jon Tuska, Link Hullar, Jerry Burge, Al Tonik and Sam Moskowitz.

The second section was called "The Armadillo Cub" and featured humorous stories about Page's characters The Armadillo (first created in 1957 for Dean Grennell's fanzine Grue; he showed up in plenty of other outlets, including Mike Shayne Mystery), and Nadir McGirk, about a misfit crew of thirtieth century space adventurers. The focus on this gradually changed to its heroine, Captain Shivers.

An eighth issue was "worked on but never published".

Spicy Detective Stories was one of the notorious Spicy pulps published by Culture Publications in the late 1930s which concentrated on a simple formula - fast action stories laced with sex. It ran for nine years under that title before the forces of reform forced it to change to the rather more sedate Speed Detective.

Note that from late 1935 through late 1937, most issues appeared in two different versions - one uncensored and the other self-censored. The censored version was identifiable by a star within a box located at the top of the cover. The interior illustrations were typically "toned down" in the censored versions and some even had variant contents.

Also in 1941 & 1942, most of the stories were retitled stories, attributed to "fake" authors, from earlier issues (or from other Cuture magazines) apparently as part of a fraud by the editors.

"This title may not exist. It does occur in the occasional magazine checklist but exhaustive research and inquiries have turned up absolutely no information on it.

"The earliest reference to it is in a Bradford Day checklist of the early 1950's. Day lists the title as being British. He thought that it was published in the mid-1930's. He goes on to say that he has no data on it.

"Copies do not exist in either the British Library or in Oxford's Bodleian Library. No collector or researcher that we contacted had a copy or had ever seen one. That does not mean that the title does not exist. At the same time, it must be viewed as probably being apocryphal. It seems most likely that indexers after Day simply picked up his reference and incorporated it in their own work." (Miller/Contento)

This imaginary title was a long-standing joke amongst pulp fans, representing the ultimate absurd cross-genre magazine. It was probably inevitable that someone would eventually attempt to fabricate a copy. Odyssey Publications, a pulp reprint publisher, made such an attempt, with partner Will Murray writing the entire issue. Unfortunately, Odyssey became dormant shortly thereafter, and the publication languished until 1989, when pulp fan Doug Ellis heard about it and persuaded Murray to let him publish it.
